Absolutely awful experience. Made a reservation for a first date at Il Buco for this past Saturday night, given all of the wonderful reviews I saw on here. The restaurant was absolutely stifling hot- all of the diners were complaining

A great restaurant.
Food, Service, Ambiance - this place has it all. The menu changes daily, so while the menu is quite small, you won't see the same thing on repeat visits.

the price was crazy high, but the quality of the food was okay. So it even itself out. The waiter knew the drinks and menu, which was great. My wife had a great time eating dinner with just me and her.

My boyfriend and I sampled the prosciutto croquettes, the octopus with yoghurt dressing and potatoes, and the fluke. All were tasty. However, the fluke was expensive and there was less fish than one single order of sashimi. It was really obscene that they would charge so much for so little. The octopus salad appeared to be a more generous portion than the fish, but what we thought was octopus was actually potatoes. They really filled the plate with potatoes (which looked like octopus with the yoghurt dressing) and there were only a few small pieces of octopus. The place was romantic, but totally not worth the prices. You'd have to spend a fortune to fill up here.

Pros: Good food, good dirty martini

Cons: Overly Expensive, terribly small portioned appetizers

I've been to Il Buco about a dozen times and it manages to impress and surprise me in a new way each time. My last visit was no exception. Though it was a busy Friday night, the staff was uber-pleasant and welcoming, unhurried and eager to make sure we were happy with our table and then well attended to throughout our meal. Unlike so many other lookalike Italian restaurants that serve taste-alike food, this restaurant seems to find a way to introduce something new every day. With market-fresh produce and the dishes that are inspired by them, you always feel like you're eating the best of each ingredient at its peak of flavor. Not sure what to order? No problem, the wait staff is helpful and knowledgeable.

The noise level is unfortunately pretty high, especially in the area near the entrance and bar (thought the bar crowd itself is pretty tame). If you want a quite(r) table, there are two two-tops that are set aside or you can always ask for the far ends of one of the several huge communal tables. You really have to request the two-tops or quite tables in advance or you'll be put in the middle of other diners already shouting to be heard. There is also a round table for four or more next to the bar that is pretty ideal if you want to see the street. The back-most room is very dark and can be warm in the summer because of it's proximity to the open kitchen. For the same reason, it's a perfect place to be seated in the fall or winter.

Highly recommended.

I have been coming here for years. The menu is authentic, house-made, charming. The service is amazing and always spot-on. I have never been disappointed; a great spot for a romantic evening.

I think this place is good, but not for the price and size of dishes. It seems like a good place to bring someone from out of town if they have an expense account, but not for me these days. The food was mediocre, the service was good, I left feeling full yet not satisfied.

I seriously heart Buco. What a great dining experience. Great food, reasonable prices considering the quality of the food (pretty straightforward dishes for an upscale restaurant, but executed masterfully), fast and correct service, fantastic interior (and exterior, for that matter), What more can you ask for?

I would recommend to anyone or everyone who want to a great dinning expereince.

Ok, so it is a bit noisy, not much soft to absorb sound. Be that as it may, it is a wonderful place to dine. For what you get and where it is, it is not over priced. The food was fresh and soul satisfyingly good. I had the rabbit appetizer and it came hot and crisp and perfectly spiced. As the waitress noted, it is probably the best "fired chicken" around. The lasagna was delicious, although I found the top a bit too crusted, but my wife liked it. The Mushroom risotto was rich and full of fresh mushrooms. As for desert, the sleeper, is the Panna Cotta with aged Balsamic Vinegar. All the deserts we ordered were good, but that seem to be the unexpected favorite.

As for the wait staff, absolutely perfect. Our waitress could not have been more professional and friendly. She had a great smile, raven black hair and..well I'll leave it at that.

The wine list is quite extensive, and expensive, but there are a goodly number of reasonably priced wine. We had a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano '03 at about $60 and it was perfect for a warm summer night with the rustic food. Reminded me of the meal we had in that lovely Italian town.

Five of us around the table and not one of us was unhappy in our dining.

Il Buco is a very charming restaurant that almost feels like a quick trip to Tuscany. Sadly, the acoustics of the room are very poor and the noise is almost unbearable. Lots of loud single women at the ba still drinking Cosmos and minor celebrities wearing sunglasses inside at night. The food is lovely but perhaps over-priced for what it really is.

My husband and I have been here many times but after a terrible experience this weekend, we will not be going back. Sigh...where to begin. Things started to go downhill when the waiter spilled our bottle of wine all over our table (and my husband's white shirt) and didn't return to clean it up. By that point, we had been waiting for some of our appetizers for almost 45 minutes. When my husband tried to discreetly complain to the manager about the wine and the wait, the manager came to our table and lectured us and our guests about "how restaurants work". Rather than apologizing and offering to provide us with a new bottle of wine (or even to pay for drycleaning), the manager was very defensive and argumentative tone with us and told us were were making things "complicated". When we asked the Sommelier to assist us with choosing a second bottle of wine, she made several recomendations, the first 5 of which turned out to be unavailable. We were open to suggestions from the Sommelier but every bottle she suggested that they actually had in stock was significantly over tour price range, which we informed her was around $100.00. When we explained were were not interested in spending $250 for a second bottle of wine, she basically told us that she gave up and she had nothing to suggest. It was completely condescending and we were embarrased in front of our guests. Truly, their attitude ruined the evening.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday this past weekend and it was amazing! We had an early reservation (6:15 p.m.) on a Saturday and though they were not sure we could get a seat in the wine cellar, we wound up having the whole thing to ourselves! So romantic. We had the salted cod appetizer and I had the asparagus risotto with goat cheese and I can not stop thinking about how amazing it was! Stellar wine menu, perfect atmosphere, everything about this place was amazing. Will go back again for sure. FYI, the upstairs gets kindof noisy; as we were leaving, the place was pretty packed and not nearly as romantic as downstairs.

When I made the reservation, I specifically asked for a special table for two for a birthday. Instead, we were seated at a long COMMUNAL table that was basically a picnic bench. Located just outside the kitchen, the servers were knocking into our chairs every time they walked by. The waitress had real attitude. We literally said we needed "one minute" to order and she came back in 15, letting us know she was annoyed we were trying to get her attention while she stood around chatting to other staff members. The menu is limited with more pages devoted to items they sell (olive oil, salt, balsamic vinegar) than actual dishes. The place was loud which was good b/c it helped drown out the maddening bongo "music" that looped all night long. The food was overall delicious, but expensive with miniscule portions. They brought the wrong appetizer, but it was corrected quickly. For about $15/ea, Fluke - 3 paper thin pieces of fish and Calamari - 3 small tubes of squid. My $14 glass of wine was undrinkable. I have bought better bottles in the liquor store for <$10. There was an unusually long delay between courses even though it was late and most patrons had been served. My $47 steak was cooked as ordered but there were only 3 small pieces (apparently the chef likes to serve in 3's). My fiance's spanish mackeral was NOT fresh and had an ammoniated taste of fish that was past its prime. We did not bother with dessert. I was starving and wanted to get a burger somewhere. The best part was the Russian vodka. I am 100% Italian and have been all over Italy and don't agree that this is "authentic" Italian food. I have been in foodservice from waitressing to foodservice director for over 20 yrs and understand quality and customer service. Don't go unless you're really not hungry in the first place and insist upon getting ripped off.

I went there for the first time last weekend on a date and had the best time. The food was fantastic and the service was spot on. The people there really seem to enjoy what they do and our server was knowledgeable and friendly. I know nothing about wine and the sommelier took time to talk to us about what we were eating and picked us the perfect wine to pair with our meal. She really knew what she was talking about, even telling us a story about the vineyard owner I would recommend this place to anyone and I will definitely be back.

I was pleasantly surprised by this gem of a restaurant. I just celebrated an anniversary with my husband and it was by far one of our best nyc experiences. FYI if you want a romantic seating be sure to ask for seating for 2 or you could get stuck sitting at the "banquet" style tables. The rabbit just fell off the bone it was so tender and the gnocchi was so perfectly made. The service was top notch as was the wine suggestion made by the sommelier. We really liked the ambiance which felt cozy and unpretentious. We will definitely go back soon.

Our server was rude and aggressive in her manner - she had all the attitude, but not of the charm, of a waitress at a west side greasy spoon - an offensive curt manner. She got defensive about not understanding a drink order (brought an americano coffee instead of an americano cocktail), and rather than admit her mistake kept interrupting me when I tried to clarify what I wanted. Most of the other wait staff during our meal were fine - but in the end, it was generally unremarkable food (hit-and-miss, I'd a nice starter - quail - and a poor main course - pork -. My friends felt similarly about their's) in a delightful setting, at way too high a price. The place always seems busy - I wonder how many are regulars? I personally have no desire to eat there again.

I went here on a double-date on Friday night and thankfully we knew to make reservations in advance. I love Bond Street restaurants and all the other restos in this neighborhood but I could be biased because I live in the area, though. Regardless, when we got to Buco (20 minutes late but they were still willing to get us our table if we waited at the bar). In those 10 minutes that we waited at the front bar while they prepared our table, I noticed I was standing right next to Sophia Coppola.
To make this new-New-Yorker even happier, when we sat down they seated us next to Ron Livingston (from Office Space and S*x & The City season 5 fame). I really like how they push people together on long wooden tables. So even though we were three groups seated at one table, there was enough space and centerpieces to break-up the groups at this one long table.
The meal was excellent. this place is not like a typial Italian tourist trap in the least. I felt like I was back in Tuscany in a tiny village neighborhood eatery. I highly recommend any pasta dish on the menu, we had the taglioni which was amazing.
Seafood was fresh, service was attentive and non-obtrusive.
Dessert was delicious too, but not the high-light of the meal.
Everyone in the place seemed to be relaxed enjoying their meal on a Friday night.
Too bad my adorable boyfriend couldn't get off work to join us. I guess I'll have to go back so he can know what the hell I'm talking about... or maybe it's just an excuse to go back ;)

My boyfriend and I took my out-of-town parents to Il Buco last Friday night for dinner. It was our first time there. After delicious appetizers, someone (I think he was the manager) came over to let us know one of our four entrees (mine) would be delayed a few minutes. He apologized profusely and offered me a complimentary salad, which I declined. The entree arrived less than five minutes later. At the end of our meal, our waiter brought over four (terrific) desserts, compliments of the management. We were so surprised, and very appreciative. All this without our ever having to say one word! How often do you get service like that? In my experience, not very often. I never thought I would write one of these reviews but I just wanted to thank Il Buco for reminding me that good service can and does exist and won't soon be forgotten. I will definitely return to Il Buco and you should, too!

I haven't written many reviews but felt compelled to write one for Il Buco. I took my boyriend there for his birthday, they made sure it was special and treated us very well. I didn't even have to remind them it was his birthday. The service was smart and personable and the manager came over to ask how our meal was at the end. Be sure to ask for a private table if you want to dine alone as some tables look like you will sit close to other diners. The location is unassuming but beautiful inside. The olives and wine pairings with dessert were perfect. I'll definitely go back and am so happy to find such a wonderful place!

Went to Il Buco on a Friday night. The atmosphere is homey. There is only one individual table for 2 in the entire restaurant. Otherwise, parties of 2-3 are seated on a communal table. Service is good, although not a place you can sit and talk. When we didn't place our dessert order right away, the waiter came three times and then sent the hostess as a subtle nudge to leave. The food is ok, good, but not spectacular. Desserts are sub par. The disappointing thing was that everyone was of one demographic, much older and generally lacking diversity.

After making a reservation weeks in advance, our table was in the "climate controlled" basement which was absolutely freezing! Appetizer of Hamachi and bloodorange was good. However, after a very long, cold wait for the main course, due to a "timing problem in the kitchen" our meals finally arrived. I had the pork with polenta and radishes and was salty beyond belief. When you are up all night drinking water and still paying for it the next day I don't want to be paying these kind of prices! After the meal was over we were rushed to leave the restaurant by being given our coats at the table. Not to turn more tables but to close the freezing basement that everyone else had wisely abandoned. I had very much been looking forward to dining at this restaurant and the experience was terrible, I won't be going back.

Intimate & rustic atmosphere. The food was fresh and delicious! My gnocchi was a bit on the salty side, but sashimi appetizer, duck confit & risotto were AMAZING! Definitely one of the best, authentic Italian restaurants in the city. Worth a try- but make reservations!

Small, Classy, and very intimate setting. The scene is "Old Euro" The food is good! I had the Ribeye (prepared medium). I enjoyed it. It's really a nice place to go and relax. It's not a loud crowd and the lights are dimmed. It's definitely worth a try if you're in the area. The staff is also good.

It's not a loud crowd and the lights are dimmed. It's definitely worth a try if you're in the area. The staff is also good.

Pros: The food, ambiance, service

Cons: Not many people might enjoy the old chairs/table look. If you're dining in a large group, call ahead (not really a con, but a suggest.) There might not be enough room to accommodate.

We just went to Il Buco with my work colleagues for our Holiday dinner. We had the back room by the kitchen. The food was out of this world! We are all a bunch of wannabe foodies and all of us were in heaven. We began with a selection of starters, the rocket and parmesan salad was divine, simple but so tasty. I had the branzino, now I don't like brussell sprouts, but the one's served with this dish were nutty and delicious! The dessert sampler was too amazing!!!!!!!!!!! We all had so much fun, the atmosphere, service was brilliant too. I was also very impressed with the beautiful kitchen that was on full display from our dinner table, the chef's were so efficient, the kitchen spotless! If you love Italian food, then this is a must, flavourful, clean food!!!!!!!!!! YUMMY!

As a person who loves dining in NYC, I LOVED Il Buco... It is amazing - great service, fabulous food, wonderful wine! The ambiance is so terrific - upstairs is a great dining room and downstairs the wine cellar feels so old world and romatic. The temp is a little colder downstairs since it is a wine cellar, so I would keep that in mind if you get cold quickly or are a girl with clothes ont he mind:) Eating in the cellar is a surreal experience - the city just disappears and you feel like you are in a diff world. We had a drink afterwards upstairs at the bar and the bartender was great as were the people who were sitting at the area. Loved the experience and the fact that Edgar Allen Poe was inspired to write "The Cask of Amontillado" was jsut a bonus :)

OK ,it can be loud..for sure too loud when some drunk rude patrons get really loud disrepecting every other diner .What should a reastaurant do ? Give this guys a break ! I have been a regular for years and it is one of the few places in the city with a loyal following ,even if they have some ups and downs but believe me there is not much better around and far more expensive horrible places in New York ...so my advice is give them a chance..it will not be wasted !

Too loud to talk. we went with another couple and it was really hard to hear one another across the table!! I like the decor though. The food is good although the main courses were better than the appetizers. We didn't have to wait for our table which was nice.

I have dined at Il Buco three times and have consistently had great experiences. Their menu is always changing, but is always good. They have a great cheese selection and also have a nice selection of wines. Highly recommended.

This place is always so consistant! We have been coming here for the past 4 years and we are always amazed. The food is nothing short of remarkable, and the service is always warm and friendly! We also celebrate many occasions here as the place is great for groups. Note: If are are coming with a group, request the table in the back, it's very private.

we had a private party(cocktails and dinner) in the dark and cozy wine cellar. the service was great and the menu (which we pared down) still had a diverse selection. my twofold complaints: $3,500.00 minimum and if your group is larger than 10 you're going to have some people sitting on benches and card tables.

Food was great and came quickly. Service was rude. We were told we were talking too loud(in an already loud restaurant) The hostess made faces about us to her friends, they were whispering behind our backs. Obnoxious crowd. Would not go back and would not recommend to anyone else.

Wow. I am wow-ed. Wonderful, wonderful food - they really take their time with their flavors. You can taste it in every mouthful. Some of the most attentive service I have ever experienced in NYC, or anywhere for that matter. Beautiful location and decor - felt like Tuscany. Felt like home. Please try this gem, you will surely walk away with a new favorite.

In 30+ years since I moved to NYC I've never felt more unwelcome or experienced less friendly service than this place. Rude maitre d', inept waiters, rushed service, snooty attitudes - a nightmare experience for my party of 6. The food is pretentious and expensive. However, it is average at best. Frankly there was nothing memorable on the menu which consists of a dozen appetizers and all of 4 main courses...

Il Buco is waste of time and money. I will never set foot at this place again. There are plenty of much better Italian restaurants in NYC.

I've read the reviews and after my dinner my dinner there two nights ago, I can safely assure any weary diners that Il Buco is tops in Manhattan. I laugh when I read good reviews about typical italian fare and here is this gem a restaurant with amazing olive oils, succulent quail and fish, and perfect desserts taking a beating? Il Buco is classy and perhaps the menu is intimidating for someone who is expecting lasagna at an italian restaurant. Il Buco is not just Italian, it's mediterranean. The chef at the moment leaves a hint of citrous in each dish, uses exotic rices, and doesn't overwhelm any dish. I'll e back to try more as I wasn't able to get past a handful of appetizers and Dessert with wine pairings. The tart was rhubarb.. WOW. The Pana Cotta.. PERFECT.. Don't sleep on this. It doesn't have to try, it's just better than anyone around.

Went with friends to celebrate a birthday, such a disappointment. They sat 8 of us at a table that isn't meant for more than 6, we got past that. They kept running out of any bottle of wine we ordered, so constantly had to go back to the wine list and pick something else. The portions are miniscule -- a pasta entree was the size of a small appetizer, we were all hungry at the end of the meal but they certainly supersize the prices. To top it off, I thought the service was not good and rude to boot. Truly, skip it.

Brought a client and colleague here for dinner having only read a review of it the night before. The atmosphere is really great if you're looking for a bustling rustic Italian, 'forget you're in a huge city' kind of feel--which I thought was nice for a couple hours. Seated at the end of a communal table turned out to be rather pleasant as we were somewhat separated via a large potted plant on the table. Food was good, not fantastic. Our server started out fine, but seemed to forget about us a few times. Worth checking out with a date or friend.

They were out of a lot of their less expensive wines (in the $35-$45 range), so we paid over $100 for 2 bottles of wine. Which were just OK. Even though we sat by the kitchen, it was near IMPOSSIBLE to ever get our waiter. The dishes we got were extremely delicious, but SUPER tiny. Between 5 people we got 2 apps, 5 entrees, and 3 desserts - plus 2 HUGE baskets of their bread. By the end I was so hungry that I wanted to get a slice of pizza or something. And the prices - so outrageous for the portion size. Save your money!!

Although the ambiance is great, the food is not worth the money. I had bisteca there the other night and it was way below average considering the $34 price tag on it. Also the octopus appetizer was far away from exceptional. The only thing that is good about the place is really the interior design.

I went to Il Buco for Valentine's. The food, the atmosphere and these service was amazing. The place is so intimate and nicely decorated. The ingredients in the dishes are so fresh. We had 5 course pre-fix dinner and everything was amazing. I think this is one of the best restaurants in NYC. One can go with bunch of friends and sit at one of the communal tables. It is also a perfect date spot. Listen to the waiters, they know which wine goes with which dish. Now stop reading this review and MAKE A RESERVATION TO IL BUCO!!!

I went here with my friends, who was here on vacation. We were all wearing jeans and I don't know if that gave the host the impression that we were poor and could not afford dinning there. Anyway, the portions were very small. The best thing at this restaurant was the panna cotta, it was simply...melt in your mouth. A bit too dark, then again it goes with the host.

This was my favorite place on earth. To my greatest disappointment there have been so many changes in the last year that i am now bound to never be back. The food is still good and the charm is like in the old times, but the service and the charming hospitality that were Il Buco trademark are gone for good. Domage !!

I've been to a lot of Italian restaurants, high-end, low-end, and this was the blandest food I've ever tasted. This is not Italian food. Save your money. The risotto had no flavor. My husband's pasta with cauliflower was equally tasteless. We were really shocked. The decor was great, but meal was expensive and not good.

I'm in two minds about Il Buco.....The first time I visited I fell in love with the ambience, and was estatic that the food matched up. That was followed by visits off and on. There have been times that the food hasn't lived up to the promise it showed earlier, but I haven't given up yet, coz every uninspired visit is invariably followed by a memorable evening which makes me want to go back again! My present recommendation would be the fig stuffed quail & the lasagna with duch ragout.

First let me address a few of the negative things that others have said. As far as communal tables there are 11 private tables on the main floor and only four communal tables. I might add that you are further away from your neighbor at a communal table than at the private ones as they are squeezed pretty close. The restaurant uses all local farm raised products and as for the lack of soda so what. Who drinks pepsi with a fine meal anyway. They offer a list of about fifteen appetizers that change seasonally and there entrees change every evening. With a choise of three pastas a risotto and four main dishes I think there is something for everyone. I also found the staff to be very knowledgable and helpul throughout the meal. They can explain any ingredient and very well versed on the wine menu as well.

I went to Il Buco based on the recommendations here and the 9.6 score given. I was sorely disappointed. The food was mediocre. The service was poor. When asked to compare between two dishes, the server said "whatever you like". The server was clearly having a bad. The Leak Risotto was good, although rich. My companions said the steak was fabulous, and even said it was quite possibly the best steak they've ever had. The neighborhood is not good. The restaurant is small. I wouldn't recommend a group over 6. We had 9 and were a tight fit. The restaurant was sweltering hot... it was easily 80 degrees in the building.

I had dinner there last weekend, and the food was amazing. To be honest, I didn't even NOTICE if the service we got was good or bad, who cares about service as long as we got the amazing food? The appetizers are unreal, even if the main courses are more traditional. I want to go back again and just order all of the appetizers.
