Over the past 11 years, I have been to many studios and worked with many teachers in NYC, LA, Chicago, and Orlando and NONE compare to this one. PSYG helps me feel strong and healthy. But, I really came to appreciate working with Peter and his staff after I herniated three disks in my lower spine shortly after giving birth to my third child. Careful attention and one-on-one work helped me return to my pre-pregnancy shape and walk pain-free. Not only do they know how to teach, but they know WHY they do what they do. Friendly and supportive, knowledgeable and accessible-- You will leave standing up taller, using all your "space" and breathing more evenly.

PSYG is head and shoulders above any other pilates studio I have been to. The instructors are all amazing. I had back and ankle problems when I first went and they worked closely with me and my doctor and were an integral part of my getting better.

The work out is harder then anywhere else I have done pilates and it has changed my body. The ambiance is relaxing and it is always very clean. It is a fabulous studio!

I was new to pilates when I walked into this studio and am really enjoying it, and my body appreciates it, too. This is due to Steven, my instructor, who is so clear in his descriptions of what to do and just fun to work out with. I also highly recommend the lovely Alethea, my yoga instructor. She epitomizes calm and also gives excellent lessons and encouragement. Great quality here...

Experienced and attentive professionals set this studio apart from others. All of the instructors truly understand anatomy, and they understand how to listen and respond to the individual client. Both the yoga and the pilates have a holistic approach to exercise and wellness.

I've tried every West Side Studio, and nothing comes close! For an extra treat, seek out the owners Peter (pilates) or Max (yoga) for a private session. It's worth every penny.

I started going to PSYG several years ago because of an injury and I got hooked. The pain from my injury is gone and my body is so much stronger. Every instructor I've had is fantastic. The place is friendly but serious (in a good way). Clients stay with PSYG for years and years - for very good reason!

I have been doing Pilates at Pilates shop/yoga garage for one year and it has been life altering. My body is strong and fit, and the way I walk, run, think about posture, hold myself up, etc - has changed dramatically. The staff is warm and wonderful and I have met some really great people on my weekend workouts! If you live on the upper westside and want to do pilates than this is SURELY your place to be. I cannot say enough about how marvelous an experience it continues to be for me!

Peter, Phoebe, and the rest of the instructors at PSYG are truly fantastic. I have practiced pilates since 1994 and have never received instruction that is as challenging and beneficial (physically and mentally) as that which I get here. They know their stuff (all of them - I've never had such consistently strong instruction from all teachers at a given studio), and you will get personalized instruction regardless of whether you're in an individual session or a small group one. On top of the fantastic instruction, you'll also get to be part of what I have found is a really lovely and supportive community. I cannot recommend PSYG enough.

Pros: truly the best pilates instructors in nyc, location, price

Cons: none!

Maxine and Peter Roel run an amazing studio. I have been practicing yoga with Maxine and pilates with Peter for over 7 years and have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from each and every class. The classes are small and the instruction tailored to my needs. They kept me strong and healthy through 3 pregnancies and helped me bounce quickly back into shape each time. The atmosphere in all the classes is warm and supportive from both teachers and clients alike. I can not recommend PSGY highly enough!

I have studied yoga for many years with many teachers and know no other on this level of understanding and appreciation of body mechanics and anatomy. This is yoga for those who want to move with health and intelligence/ If you're interested in stunts and drama , this is not for you, although it is certainly filled with the fun of movement/ If you're interested in moving with integrity and foregoing injury - then join us.

The yoga practice is just right. They pay attention to avoiding injuries and working everyone to their potential. I've been hooked for 4 years and have enjoyed every minute. They are building my abilities in a thoughtful manner and I'm seeing the results!
The pilates training is also excellent. The trainers are friendly and not shy about getting me to work harder!

I took a pilates class after the birth of my son about 4 years ago and was totally turned off - then I had my second child and I knew I needed to try it again. I'm just glad I tried it here!! Peter worked with me to resolve a pregnancy related injury that plagued me for over a year and now I'm totally hooked. If you haven't taken pilates at PSYG, you haven't really taken pilates so do yourself a favor and give it a try - I promise you will be SO glad you did.

Pilates Shop Yoga Garage is a great neighborhoody studio with a unique approach to the arts of Pilates and Yoga -- in that the two are presented as truly complimetary and intertwined (but taught seperately). A great energy!

I am the laziest person in the world; I hate exercising. A friend, however, dragged me to a pilates class with her here at the PSYG and it was such a fun experience that I have been going ever since. It's doesn't feel like work; rather, it's like giving your body a treat. The teachers are very experienced and give everyone individual attention to pinpoint your weaknesses and make sure you are doing the moves correctly. It really helps with relieving chronic body pains as well. I've never been in better shape.

I love Pilates Shop and Yoga Garage! As a Yoga and Pilates teacher - I like to think that I am discriminating as to the best of the best and I belive that I have found it here. I have been teaching for over fifteen years and this studio is the best for me. It is challenging for me when it needs to be and supportive and caring when I need that the most. I cannot recommend the teachers more for their knowledge and training. These teachers look at you and think about what they teach you. It is not a "formula" and as a teacher myself I appreciate the individuality. When I grow up, I hope to be as good as Pilates Shop/ Yoga Garage - thank you Max and Peter

The first thing I noticed when I went to this studio was the ambience; clean and pretty, quiet music, a few people on unusual looking machines with 2 teachers engaged with their students and smiles on everyone's faces. I started pilates 9 months ago with a bad back; I haven't had a back spasm or been stiff since I started working with Peter.

As a five year student of Peter Roel and a two year yoga student at this studio I can only say that I feel I have found the best that the city has to offer. The atmosphere is encouraging, challenging and fun. The instruction is remarkable in its skill and attention to the individual. Peter Roel is unique in his knowledge of Pilates and his ability to read the specific needs of his clients. Everyone I have seen in this space thrives under his tutelage and that of his hand picked instructors. The instruction in the yoga studio is equally inspiring and tailored to the client. I always feel rejuvenated when I walk out of 42 West 96 Street.

The best yoga (and pilates) I have ever experienced. The on on one attention from instructors who actually understand anatomy and physiology makes all the difference.

They are educated and sympathetic--an amazing combo!!

Peter Roel is a jewel among the masters in the Pilates world. His knowledge is not only extensive but innovating, exciting, creative. He goes beyond the limited confines of "working out" and takes movement into the third dimension of extending, breathing, being. Each person is treated as the unique individual that we are regardless of the session private or group. This studio is a welcomed haven from the big fitness studios that are becoming the norm. As a dancer and Pilates instructor I feel Peter and his staff have continued to challenge, engage and create an atmosphere of endless possibility when it comes to moving the body. I highly recommend this studio for anyone of any age at any time. In fact this is THE studio to visit if you are Pilates teacher. You will never think of Pilates in the same way again. A must if visiting New York.

Although Pilates, taught by the right instructors (and Peter and his crew are certainly that) will help flatten your abs and sculpt your arms, it can also afford help for conditions that are far more serious.

I have had lower back problems for years and no one could address them. Peter did! I could not sit in a car or an airplane for more than an hour without being in considerable pain.

Its completely gone.

Peter knows exactly what he is doing to make you not only look good, but to make you FEEL good too.

And its alot of fun.

Pilates Shop and Yoga Garage is such a great studio. It is challenging for strong, healthy people but it is the knowledge and quality of the teachers that bring those who are not so healthy in. I have some herniated discs - so I have to be careful and it's inspiring to be joined by other people who have spinal fusions, hip replacements and all other sorts of physical restrictions(including pregnancy!). The type of work that is being done at this studio helps to strenghthen you and really takes you through life. It is good to know that I have someplace that I can continue to go to forever because they have made me strong and can deal with any changes that occur in my body! I cannot recommend this studio enough!

As a yoga and pilates teacher - for myself I seek out the best of the best and I have found it at the Pilates Shop/Yoga Garage. The knowledge of all of the teachers is impressive and I feel safe, supported and challenged all at the same time. This is a very hard balance to achieve - yet they accomplish it each and every time that I am at the Pilates Shop/Yoga Garage. Special thanks to Max and Peter for creating a special envirinment and finding the best teachers that compliment their special style. As a person who has worked with many pilates teachers and many yoga teachers - I know I have found the best studio possible (p.s. I come from New Jersey and they are so worth it!!)

I was experiencing horrible back pain, but with the help of the instructors at Pilates Shop my back is in great shape! I have also lost weight and gained strength.

As a poor college student, classes seemed pricey at first, but my body feeling great makes them worth every penny. Plus class size is small and private lessons are available too. When I compared rates with other studios, Pilates shop is no more expensive than any other.
