We have been taking our dogs (Muffin, Caesar, Murphy deceased) and Corky and Max to Speak for over ten years. I cannot comprehend a more competent and compassionate group of dedicated professionals.
Our experience has been limited, for the most part, to Drs. Sue Smith and Stepan Metzger but includes all of the administrative support and vet techs. The entire staff has been a pleasure to know and I will continue to entrust my furry friends to their care.
After reading several positive reviews about SPEAK, I decided to take my dog there. However, my recent experiences at the clinic have been so completely unprofessional, inexplicable, and unbelievable that I feel that I should add my review to the ones below so that people can make an informed decision. Several months ago, I made an appointment for dental cleaning based upon an estimate provided by the vet while in the office. Unfortunately, this estimate was incorrect and the cost ended up being too much for my budget as a student. I spoke with a different vet, expressing both my frustration with the mix-up and my opinion that the price was too high. This afternoon, I opened up mail from SPEAK with my dog's files and an anonymous post-it note that said "Enclosed are your dog's files so that you can continue his care at another hospital." Apparently, if you disagree with the vets here, they dismiss you from their care. I cannot believe this unprofessionalism and lack of understanding. It is not my fault someone made a mistake (and I even said I didn't blame them) for misquoting and it is uncalled for to "drop" me because I opted not to have this procedure performed there. I would definitely not recommend them if you care at all about being treated with respect.
I have used Speak Animal Hospital several times. I have always been satisfied with their services. They always get me in right away if it is an emergency and treat myself and my animals very nicely. They are professional, compassionate and reasonably priced.
I ended up @ SPEAK about 6 years ago when my Mom & I found a kitten in our garage. We weren't sure we wanted to add a 3rd cat, Dr. Susie examined her & we did keep her, best decision we made. All my animals go there including my Cattle dog, who I almost lost this year due to him getting into chocolate. Dr. Susie went above & beyond carrying for Owen during this time, talking all my calls when I had concerns & fitting him into her schedule just to ease my mind that he was getting better. The care & compassion I have had is what makes me continue going back. I cannot say enough good things about the whole staff there, except THANKS & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! ! =)
We have been taking our pets to SPEAK for years now and never had a bad experience! They go above and beyond just basic animal care - they LOVE animal and it shows. They helped us find alternatives to surgery, as was the case with our now departed dog, and now our oldest cat.
The exam rooms are ALWAYS clean when we visit. The staff is always friendly and the Doctors professional and caring.
Fran R's review is very unclear - did the cat escape while at SPEAK or did it escape in her care? At any rate, I cannot imagine them 'letting' an animal die in their care. Knowing the staff and doctors that work there, that's just absurd.
I cannot speak for the business but those that complain about the price should know that they get a lot of people not paying for service or just dropping off cats (and other animals) that they graciously either take in or arrange for them to go somewhere else. That takes money and they are a business. They do accept donations to help keep the place running - beyond our bills, we give back because they give back to us.
They a let my cat die because I had an unpaid balance that I offered to pay. Great compassion! So much for animal sanctuary. My cat accidently got outside and got in trouble. He has a major problem with his jaw and eye and is going to die because of their compassion is for the all mighty dollar.
After two very bad experiences with overpriced, undercaring vets in the area we took the advice of a friend and took our babies to SPEAK. They offer a sliding scale for people who cannot afford the skyrocketing cost of vet care and the vets there (we have seen Dr. Smith and one other - can't remember the name currently) are caring and thorough.
I have never seen a dirty examination room or ANY other part of the facility. In our experience things have always been spic and span and thier facilities are top-notch.
The fact that they have, on site, a no-kill cat shelter was also important to us. We have spent much time in there with the cats and they are all healthy and happy (as much as one can tell that a cat is happy... LOL).
If you want to support a worthwhile cause and get good care for your furry little friends, we strongly suggest Dr. Smith at SPEAK!
Now that we have moved, Shadow and Miss Kitty will miss Dr. Suz A LOT, as will we!!
Dr. Sue and her staff are very caring and committed to giving you and your pet the utmost care. The examining rooms are clean and well kept unlike Judith S. states in her review.
If your dog is one to shed, then the room will certainly need to be swept after their visit - which it is. There are young adults that volunteer their time to help out by cleaning, washing items and doing whatever else needs to be done.
SPEAK takes in stray cats that are put up for adoption and most of their upkeep is paid for by donations. The prices for medicine are comparable to other veterinarians, but the charges for office visits and other miscellaneous services are much lower.
Care and compassion is what matters most when you have an animal. The pet is part of you family no matter what the cost is.
Judith S. chooses to go elsewhere for pet care and at those other places it feels like a chain store where you are just a customer. Believe me, I have been there.
When my dog was sick I took her to one of those other places because it was an emergency and they were on call for SPEAK. They wanted to keep my dog overnight to do more testing and I chose to took her home so that she could be in Dr. Sue's care the next day. It didn't matter to me if she died during the night. I just felt like a number at that office and I wanted care and compassion for my dog. Dr. Sue gave her any myself exactly that during her last days.

This animal care vets office is suppose to be cheaper than the average vets offices in the area but they charge the same prices as what the normal vets offices do.
High Prices and unsanitary conditions in the examining rooms will keep you away from bringing your pets to this office for medical care.
Located miles out of Binghamton its not worth your while, pocketbook or time to take your beloved animals for any kind of care at this vets office.
CONS: Keep your pet healthy. Don't go here

I took my Jack Russell in when he was throwing up. They recommended Xrays to check for a blockage but agreed with my request to try the medical treatment first. They talked to me about all the options and possible causes, didn't try to rush me out the door for the next appt., and treated my puppy like he was their own. The doctor himself called the next day to check on my puppy and ask how he was doing.
The facility has always been clean and the staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Pros: actually care about your pet
