A man I had never met came up to me at the gym and started harassing me. I asked him his name and he said, "I am the owner." I told him I didn't care who he was, that he had no right to harass me. I am a good customer and a senior citizen. I found out he is the son of the owner who lives in Florida and his name is Tony. Avoid him--he is little, balding gray, skinny man. Stay away from him, he is a whack job. The gym itself is dirty, has broken and old equipment, smells horrible and looks like a leftover from WWII. The patrons and trainers and front desk folks are very nice.

The gym is perfectly fine...I don't understand why people make excuses to THEMSELVES that there are "hidden fees" There is nothing of the sort....everything was explained to me at sign up with the enrollment, activation, and pro-rated fees due at signing. Then the "hidden fees" are explained as your rate guarantee fee/maintenance charge every Jan. and July of $19, and you pay your monthly dues of whatever you signed up for, comes out the 17th of every month for me just fine. It is your own fault for FORGETTING that you got a new card, stolen, exp date, or whatever you want to excuse your procrastination with. I did have a problem one time when I got a new card in between billing, they change my card no problem (super awesome people!) and waived the $35 return fee.....yes crap like that happens, what happens if you paid your phone bill late or any car payment....YOU HAVE AND EXTRA CHARGE!
Also, gym is always being cleaned from when I am there, I rarely wait to get on a piece of equipment, and the locations is great. So for all you making EXCUSES, just read the contract its all there.

I have been considering joining World Gym because my friend is a member. I figure going to the gym might not be such a drag if my friend and I could go together. But after reading the majority of negative comments on here (especially the ones about hidden fees and botched cancellations), I may just take my business elsewhere, Who wants a gym with NO customer service knowledge and sly payment practices?

I joined about two months ago. I was fully aware ahead of time about the $19 fee to join, and the $38 a year guarantee fees. It's called reading the fine print, and most offer have them. All in all that $177 for the year. Not bad compared to most places. The girl that took my registration was very helpful, went over all the fine print with me again, just in case I had missed it AND mentioned not once but twice about having too cancel 60 days ahead of time. There was a gentleman who was more than happy to show me around, once I asked. And I've never had any problems getting someone to show me how to use the equipment. And my favorite part....They have Day Care!!! My daughter asks for us to go to the gym, extra motivation on my part. I've only ever had to wait once to use a piece of equipment. I'd rather have a packed gym then a desserted one.....the people give me motivation and energy.
The hours could be better...24 hours a day.
Day care hours could be better.
There could be a bit more customer service, but just ask and you'll get help.

I have been a member of the World Gym in Hamburg since 2006. I like the gym but travel and get very little use. Therefore I am a good customer paying the monthly fees but not using the gym. I had a problem with my credit card and had it closed down. I forgot that I have an automatic draw out of the credit card for the monthly charges for my wife and myself. I went in to the gym and provided a replacement card. I was charged for two months of late charges (they did remove the duplicate charges for my wife) and never received any notification ( the GM stated that notices do go out). As a customer for 4 years and a good member I felt that the charges should have been waived. The GM disagreed. I guess customer satsification is not critical to the gym. Good monthly charges - poor customer satsification. The fees are greater then the monthly amounts

We have joined every gym in town and World Gym is by far the best we have ever joined. They have double the equipment of any place in Buffalo and the prices are more than half of what everyone else charges. We have been members for 3 years and all of our friends are members too. Neither us or anyone we know has ever had a bad expierience. WE have never had to wait in line for anything. The people are great, the equipment is great, and the price is unreal. By the way their contracts are very simple and upfront. My husband is an attorney and he was very comfortable and suprised that World Gym has contracts that are so upfront and easy to understand. These other people who wrote those reviews are just plain NUTS!!!!!! WE LOVE WORLD GYM. Join and you will never regret it. The best there is!

I recently have a membership to worlds gym. The staff are slightly rude, i paid my month at the gym and they switched up my my account with someone elses meaning that i had paid for a strangers membership. I talked to the manager he changed everything but was rude about it and didnt offer me anything for my troubles(not that i needed anything). The gym is very clean but the real problem with the gym are the people. The gym is medium sized but the owner lets tons of people join leaving te gym crowded. More then once i had to wait in line or use a machine that i didnt need or want to use in order for the machine i wanted to u se to be open.I am canceling my membership soon enough because i am sick of this bull.

i joined this gym along with my girlfriend a year ago. recently i decided i would like to change my membership/contract. when i went in i was told that i would have to pay about $160 cancle my original and pay the enrollment fee for the new contract. I didnt have that kind of money on me at the time so i declined. i decided the next day to email the gym and ask questions as to why i had to pay an enrollment fee when i had already payed one previously and was just looking to change my contract. my comments were followed by an email that can only be described as rude. I followed with another email discussing more problems i had with the gym (i.e. hours open, customer service and the last email i received). I was met with an even longer more rude email explaining to me that if i am upset with the way things are run i should switch to another gym, but i will not find one nearly as cheap as the almightly WORLD GYM! This is just not something you want to be a part of...trust me

Please everyone....dont be fooled by some misleading advertising! Make sure you add on $38 per year for "fee or rate guarantee". Two payments of $19 per year. This is purposely not advertised and is purposely not included with the other costs. So you have initial fee, monthly fees, and these 2 fees total initially. Then monthly fees + $38 fee per year. They conveniently leave that out of their rate advertisements!

So, dont fall for the lower rate advertisements...pretty similar to others.

World Gym provided everything that I needed in a health club... It was clean had lots new equipment and friendly staff. The most important thing for me was the cost. It was only 10 dollars per month for life!I have gone to other gyms and by far this was the best value.

I also had a terrible experience with Gold Gym. I signed up for a membership and decided to quit. They sent me a bill through the mail. I wrote on it please cancel. When I got another bill, I called there and again told them I wanted to cancel. They told me I would have to put it in writing. I told them I did. I wrote cancel on the last bill. They told me I owed over 1,000 dollars. I was shocked as how I could owe that when I hadn't stepped in the place in over a year. They sent it to collections and I ended up getting a judgement against me in court. My advice...Stay away from Gold Gym

I signed up for this gym about 18 months ago with a one year contract. I quit using the gym after the first couple months, but, continued to pay through the end of my contract. They quit taking automatic payments, so I mistakenly assumed my membership had just run it's course. Instead, I get a phone call 5 months later saying that I owe 5 months worth of payments. When I ask about how to cancel, I was told to send in a letter. I sent the letter, but have been unable to get a hold of anyone there for over a week. It turns out that they either blocked my number or simply used caller ID and opted not to pick up. When I called on my cell phone, I got an immediate answer. But, if I tried to call again on my home phone number, no one would pick up. They say they never got my letter and to send another one certified. Then, I got an email from the manager after I had emailed with the times listed that I called, and he told me after receiving my email that they would only process my cancellation in person. The initial email was very snarky in which he told me there was "no way" I had called three times a day for a week. In all reality, they just didn't want to handle my cancellation.
While the gym itself was decent, there are long waits for the ellipticals and you can forget about getting help with the equipment unless you sign up for the personal training through another company there.
When I asked what would happen if I didn't pay my balance on the amount after my contract was up, I was told they would send it to collections. Thus, I ended up paying for 8 months of gym service I didn't even know I had and thus didn't use just to protect my credit rating. Oh yeah, because they require 60 days cancellation notice even if your contract is up.
My thought is that they just weren't making sales and decided to go ahead and back charge anyone who's cancellation hadn't been processed in person.
With how much I spent in membership for a gym I never used, I could've picked up a great set of used free weights and an elliptical and never had to deal with these people. They didn't care at ALL about me as a person. They didn't care about my financial issues or that I had held up my end of the bargain. They don't care about their reputation as they have three unresolved customer complaints with the BBB and an 'unsatisfactory' rating.
Basically, they don't care. Who wants to belong to a health club that doesn't care about you?

The equipment is all new and decent, however, I would never recommend signing up with them after my experience. I signed up about 1.5 years ago with a one year contract that they stated would need to be renewed. The month my contract expired, the payments stopped being debited. Now, they've called me 6 months later to let me know they are sending me to collections and that to cancel I need to pay the previous 6 months PLUS an additional 60 days for a gym I haven't used in over a year.
They will not take a cancellation over the phone, I actually have to go in to cancel despite the fact I moved to Florida and will have to make a trip. My choices are fly up and cancel, OR keep paying OR be sent to collections..
Worst customer service ever..

Pros: Decent location, equipment and facility

Cons: They ruin your credit, don't care about you as a person and won't cancel even after your contract is up..
