Was thinking of throwing my brother's bday party here, but after what happened today, NO WAY. I was walking by, employee was outside, cleaning the sidewalk. He turned off the hose initially, but then within seconds turned it back on again. I wasn't even done passing by so water splashed all over my legs and into my shoes. I told the guy, "watch where you're spraying." His response, "F*** you."
I was surprised but angry so I shouted back at him. When he realized I wasn't going to just walk away without putting him in his place, he quickly hushed up. Are you kidding me? What kind of barbarians do they have working for them? I was so turned off by this RUDE employee that I will never go there and I will tell everyone I know that this place is repulsive. Just so establishments realize - employees are reflective of your restaurant. If they are ill mannered, that reflects poorly on the restaurant.

What a great lunch we had at Umbertos'. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. I had the linguini with clam sauce and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bread was fantastic. The service was efficient and friendly.

We got there around 9:30 on a Thursday and the place was near empty. Too bad too. While slightly on the expensive side, the waiter was real old school. Old and friendly, kidding with our Japanese friends. I forgot exactly what he said, but it means THE TIP IS NOT INCLUDED, in Japanese. The baked clams were excellent as was the clam linguine (though a touch on the salty side). Too uncrowded for the quality of service and food I'd say. And the reputation as the place where mafioso "Crazy" Joe Gallo was gunned down in 1972.

Actually, this Umberto's is a full two blocks away from the original place, which was at the end of Mulberry Street. It closed in 1996 after fourteen years in business, because they lost the lease. Rumored still to be a... er... family business, watch your mouth... and your back. Naw, it's a great place --Drink club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Pros: fresh

Cons: hard to open

Great Italian food especially the clam dishes (as the name suggests. This is not a fancy restaurant but it is a fun place and the food is some of the best in Little Italy. The prices are not too bad but I reccomment this restaurant if you want to eat good and have a good time.

On our recent visit to NYC, my wife and I dined twice at Umbertos and we had a great experience both times. The service was great, the food was good and you are steps away from the entire Little Italy experience. Ask for Rad, he is one of the friendliest waiters in New York. And it is open until 4am for late dining. Thumbs up for Umbertos.

Ask for GiGi, the best waiter, he usually knows what's good. We used to go after drinking and dancing and order more wine/beer with dinner. Linguine white clam sauce/garlic and oil, chicken parmagiana (and pasta) with mild/medium/hot sauce (depends how brave you are) is reliable. The raw bar can be off with one/two clams/oysters smelling funny. Since it changed owners/chefs, the portions are smaller (I always used to ask for a doggie bag for my chic-parm), now I can finish and still be hungry even after appetizers (which aren't as good anymore). Oh well, they messed with a good thing, now it's not so good. I even saw Bruce Morrow there once - you know the '70s dj - 'cousin Brucie'. He was very friendly, even came over to say good night and shake our hands. The bill back then was always reasonable but no more.

Pros: Nostalgic, Friendly, Authentic

Cons: Expensive, Small portions, Not very tasty

Servive is fine but all else falls short. Good for a meal till 4am. Umberto's doesn't live up to their hype.
