I went to Whistle for the first time for a simple cut. I have long, fine hair that is healthy and, with the right cut, usually appears rather full.

My stylist was Tom. I explained to him how my hair responds, what I wanted, etc. I walked out of the salon with the worst cut EVER. He actually used a razor technique that thinned out my already fine hair, leaving it stringy and flat. Worse, he cut uneven layers into my hair: "Uneven" means that if you look at my hair from behind, one side has layers 3" shorter then the other side.

I don't trust him to fix it, so I won't go back for a redo. But I would warn anyone against this place.

I agree with the reviewer who said that Leigh is really cool to talk to and has a great personality. but i also agree with the poster who said she/he got their hair destroyed by Leigh. She was super sweet and the vibe in the salon was cool, but Leigh gave me the worst haircut i've probably ever had in my life. She cut into every cowlick in the worst way and seemed to pay no attention to what I asked for or my face shape. I'm now looking for someone to correct the mess on top of my head. It was my first time there......maybe Leigh was just having an off day.

Pros: nice people, great shampoo

Cons: WORST HAIRCUT EVER

.

Petraw got it all wrong. Seems like sourpuss to me. I went to Will for a while and he's great, but got really busy and I switched to Leigh and couldn't be happier. She's charming, focused on giving me the best haircut she can, and super fun to talk to. You're not going to meet a cooler girl. And I'm constantly getting compliments on my do. I'd recommend her highly.

Leigh was doing a nice job cutting my hair for the past year or so, but she seems to get crankier and less patient with each visit. She's also always late---but demands that you arrive exactly on time. One of the prior reviewers was right when she mentioned that Leigh seemed bitter, etc. None of this would matter that much if she did a decent job, but she seems to let personal troubles interfere with her focus. She recently mangled my bangs so that I have to hide them in a barrette until they grow out. I have straight hair that's very easy to cut, and I'm not a terribly demanding client. The whole experience left much to be desired, especially with all of the complaining and sighing and moodiness. The other people in the salon are very sweet though---the phone people, reception, hair washers, etc.

Fantastic. The first time I found Whistle, I was engaged and treated respectfully from the second I walked in the door. The ambiance is so much fun, and my hairstylist, Tom, talked to me and joked with me through my entire cut (which is amazing, by the way). I get compliments on my haircut constantly. I loved the relaxed atmosphere and the energy of the staff. Don't get your hair cut at any other place, seriously. If you're going to drop $75 on a haircut, you should do it here, where the experience will be enjoyable and you'll leave feeling as though you've not only received a fantastic haircut, but you've also had a good time doing it.

Pros: everything, plus they serve you wine.

Cons: can't think of any

I've been going to Whistle for eight years and obviously love it. I love my hairdresser (she rocks!) and everyone else there is super cool including Will, the owner. A glass of wine before you get started is always a plus. I'm always pleased with my haircut even when I don't know quite how I want it cut. Heidi works her magic every time. Highly recommended.

Never knew what a good, make that great haircut was until now!
I am usually a cheap bast*rd, but have spent much more a few times on my hair and always felt blah about it.
Everyone at Whistle was so nice and I feel like my hair made me new man... can take on the world with stylish confidence by just shaking my new awesome hair!
Really do love it and hope to be seeing them again and again, every time my hair needs to be put back in shape.
great great great!

Pros: nice and easy

Cons: nope

I have short hair and always find it difficult to get a good cut, especially one that grows out well so I don't have to get it cut ever 3 weeks. I am very particular about my hair and I started going to Whistle about a year ago and LOVE IT! Seriously, I see Corinn and she works great with short hair and always pays attention to what I want, which I have had a hard time finding in the past...you know the story, you say you don't want bangs and they give you bangs. Also, I find the people there to be very nice with great taste and are extremely hospitable. I couldn't recommend this salon more highly!! And the dog is super cute too.

Cons: ...not super cheap, but it's New York...

Ok, so I never review anything but I just got my hair cut at Whistle and I have to say I was extremely impressed. Finding a place that can do stylish mens cuts without robbing you blind seems to be difficult in NYC but Corrin did an awesome job and the price was very reasonable. Cool location as well with a very cute dog hanging out at my feet the entire time. I highly recommend checking them out the next time you need to chop your mop. Oh, added bonus, they were even able to see me the same day I booked my appointment!

I've been going to Whistle for a little over two years and I've never had a bad experience. Everyone is very friendly and easy going, and they all do amazing work. I've been seeing Leigh -- she has fantastic taste and is always very pleasant to be around. You don't feel like you're on an assembly line like you do in some places. Its a great place and I always get compliments after having gone!

Pros: Nice atmosphere (good music, interesting wall art that changes from time to time), wine/refreshments offered

Cons: The prices are slightly high in comparison to some other salons, but not at all unreasonable - it is worth the difference.

I can't even begin to imagine what that negative reviewer was talking about. This is an incredible salon! Four of my friends have become clients because of me, my sister too when she's in the city. I would follow Heidi to the ends of the earth to have her cut and color my hair. Never has someone had such an innate understanding of what will work for you, and she is incredible creative with color. Everyone who works at the salon is so fun to talk to, it's like hanging out with your friends. And, they give you wine too! I could go on and on about how much I love Whistle, just get your haircut there already, you won't regret it!!

Whistle rocks hard!! Everyone in the place is welcoming and quick to start conversation, the space itself is relaxing and cozy, music of all genres is playing and above all the staff is spot on. I have been to several stylists in NY and LA and Heidi is by far the best I have ever been to. She is a genius with color and her scissor stylings... creative, precise and has always made me look like I just walked out of a magazine. People constantly stop me to ask about my hair and I am quick to pass along the Whistle name and brag about what an amazing place it is. Maybe the last reviewer needs more love in their life or they got their salons mixed up, because this place is nothing but pure gold.

Not a place I would recommend to anyone unless you like being mistreated for no good reason or need your dose of "Do you know who we are?"They aggravated me so much that I spent a good part of my day complaining to all city agencies, that's how disrespectful they are!!!

Whistle is really great. It's a very no attitude place, where all of the stylists are very friendly and informal. After a number of bad hair experiences at other salons, I went to Leigh at Whistle and ever since I have never had less than an exellent job. I am glad I finally can settle down with a stylist rather than one-night-standing.

Cons: I haven't had any problems.

I walked in having no clue what to do w/ my short, curly boring hairstyle, and somehow Heidi gave me exactly what I wanted. She really paid attention to my hairline, the way it grows and curls and fixed all the problems I was having with it. I'm completely amazed. I feel like a new person! She seemed to read my mind. Heidi spent so much time with me, explaining how to style my hair and answering all of my questions, she is worth every penny. If I had more money I would have tipped her $100! I've gotten 2 crappy haircuts at a very expensive salon and I was beginning to think it was just my hair that sucked, but now I realize that it was the hairdresser.

Will, Leigh, + Heidi are very talented stylists. They definitely know how to walk the line between indie cool and office-friendly hair--or they can take it to the extreme and make you look like a rock star (if that's what you want).

The salon is super-cute: Mid-century modern touches abound and there are bud vases with fresh flowers at each chair. The atmosphere is chill and friendly--the music is fun, and most of Whistle's clients are from the neighborhood. Prices are reasonable.

I have been getting my hair done here for years and have been to each of the stylists at one time or another. They are all different (which is fun) and all very tallented. I have told many friends who all keep going back and now my friends all have great hair! This place is always the best and feels new and refreshing when I walk through the door. LOVE IT.

I went to this place on a recommendation from a good friend. From the minute I entered there seemed to be a problem. The staff all seemed extremely nervous and quite, as if they were all going to stab each other at the end of the day. My haircut was ok but I just sat there the entire time anxious to run out of there. My friend told me it isn't usually like that but that they have been having some problems lately. Problems or no, a bad atmosphere is a bad atmosphere. Definately will not be going back. (I do, howevere, feel bad for the stylist. She probably would work better under different condition.)

my relationship with wil and whistle is the longest i've had in new york. don't know what that says about me, but i've been getting my hair cut and colored from this place for six years and running. all of the stylists there are amazing, and they're all so friendly, so awesome. no pretense, no pressure, ever. and super good energy in the salon-- cool paintings, and free beverages. actually, if you didn't blink, you may have caught wil/ whistle in one of the queer eye for the straight guy episodes, when he helped recoif one of the clueless, hairy straight men... if you don't have a regular salon, i guarantee that the first time you go here, you'll be hooked.

Was dying to find a place to stand in for a beloved salon in DC since I moved to NYC. This place would be it. I had a cut which works whether I'm off to the afterparty or making proof changes in my studio office. I can't stand blow-dried, but I can't stand looking like I have nothing to think about but hair. My stylist asked me to show her how I style it myself, with my hands, and then both cut in a way that suits what I'm willing to do, (not much!) and gave me some pointers. Recommended some products that they don't even sell. Practical but whimsical, they have these cute lights in the walls, but also a can of WD-40 to maintain the hinges of shears. Attentive without phoniness.

I generally hate salons - they're usually uptight with recessed lighting and too much attitude.

Whistle is great!! Heidi does a wonderful job and cuts and colors as fits my style not a general hip nyc haircut. No product pressure, lovely artwork, great atmosphere and good conversation.

I've tried plenty of Name Salons - and my experience at Whistle was far more enjoyable.

This place gives rocking haircuts. I love the changing artwork and relaxed style of this place. They always play great music and last time I was there I sat next to rock star, Carlos D from the band Interpol... He always has great hair as do I from now on!!
Only problem I can think of is that it can sometimes be hard getting an appointment.

My first review of this place over two years ago went like this: I went last night for a highlight and cut with Leigh. The salon itself is very tiny and the stylists are young and funky. I have to say that absolutely everyone was so friendly and very entertaining. I felt like I was just hanging out with friends. I can't say enough about the personality of this place. Update: After two years of going to Leigh however, she has completely changed my view. A year into going to Leigh for a cut and color, I decided to try someone new for a cut but loved the way she colored my hair so I continued to see her for color. I ended up really liking my new stylist but after a year of going to Leigh for just color she completely interrogated me in her chair about who was cutting my hair and how I knew them, what they did on the side, where she cut my hair, etc. You get the point and I felt completely uncomfortable. She seemed extremely bitter and maybe the increased popularity of the salon made her think that she doesn't need to treat every client with respect. Not sure but I will definitely not be going anywhere near the salon in the future.
