Jenn took my hair from black to blond over the period of a few months, while maintaining the integrity of my hair. Not only that but I always get compliments on my cut. I've been trying to grow my hair out long for years and she has managed to help me do it! She is a miracle worker! Love you Jenn!!!

Pros: Amazing colorist, Amazing cuts

Jennifer fixed my bleach blond nightmare!

by Vicky Nicky

Another salon convinced me to add highlights to my already platinum bleach blonde hair. It was awful! I cried and then wore hats for weeks. My root area ranged from light orange to pumpkin orange, especially the back of my head and it just getting worst. Jennifer(who is a platinum blonde herself, by the way) took a lot of time and care to make my hair perfect! She worked slowly and meticulously bleaching a few hairs at a time and taking time to bleach the length of the orange (which varied). The result was better than anything I had hoped for. I think she is the best person I have found to go to for bleach blonde hair!

Pros: Fixed a huge problem with my hair

Cons: None

Golden Hands, Worth every penny

by Miranda716

I have been going to different salons around the city. It was hard finding the right place were i could really trust someone with my hair, until a friend recommended Saloon Salon in Astoria. The first time i walked in the place, it looked more like a city salon which was a good thing being im from Queens and didn't have to travel far to get a city feel and cut. I then was introduced to a top stylist named "Selvi" that my friend has been going to for a little over 8 months. Her consultation was so professional and she guided me threw all the details and made me feel very comfortable with all the ideas she had presented to me. When the hair was cut and finished it looked amazing! I was so happy with the results and the technic she used to make my hair look and feel great...I would definitely recommend the salon and the stylist Selvi to others...I found a new home for my hair Thank You so much!!!

Pros: Experienced, Professional, Friendly

great place to get your hair done

by va2772

i wear my hair short and was tired of buzz cuts from the barber shops. I walked in and was fit in for a haircut by stylist named Frank. After a great wash and a rather quick haircut, Frank put some material in my hair and i loved the way it looked.

Pros: good atmosphere

Cons: none

Good haircut but a bit over priced

by allison324

Hi I do like Saloon Spa, but was going to another place in Astoria that was not as pricey and gave just as great cut as well. I do keep going to the saloon b/c the hair dresser I was using at the previous place I was going to left and I tried the Saloon and don't feel like finding someone new.

My sylist at the Saloon is great, but one day I really needed a hair cut and my stylist was not available so had my hair cut by a stylist named Selvie I see one person complained about her as well below.
She over charged me as well by a great deal, but I told her what my normal hair dresser charges there and the price that was quoted to me over the phone for her by the receptionist and she lowered it. She seemed a bit frightened as if she had over charged people before.

Her haircut was not terrible, but nothing special. I have straight hair and it is not that hard to cut, but she seemed unfocused the whole time and didn't pay attention to what I wanted. It looked like something I could get at Dramatics in the city (that cheapie salon) She also colored it and I was not happy with that either.

Having said that I would rather not mention the stylist I do see there, b/c I would not want to feel uncomfortable if Selvie was there at the same time I was getting my hair cut. So I do recommend them, just don't use Selivie

Pros: Good cut except for one sylist - Selvie

Cons: price

Highway Robbery is right as per other reviewer

by Summer12

I totally agree with sandj26, they must be talking about Selvi (her physical description of her stylist and the way she acted matched my exerpience to a tee) and the other reviewers who said they were over charged by the hair dresser Selvi.

I am only giving this place two stars b/c of my bad experience. I went b/c of the good reviews on this site, but I definitely will not be back ever. The people who are "singing selvi's praises" must be her own reviews or friends of hers b/c I did not see one good review about her before that one poster said she was terible and psycho. I defintely do not think Selvi is psycho, but she did over charge me - almost $90 dollars like sandj26 said. And she was about a half an hour late too!!! She was also very rude to the person who washed my hair like the reviewer "sand" said. All I got was a trim like the other posters and the hair cut was just decent as well. She rushed the haircut and was done in about 25 minutes not blow drying my hair like I wanted it.

If you do go to this salon ask the price first and go to a different stylist than this one.

Pros: not much

Cons: Over priced at almost $90 for just a trim

Singing Selvi's Praises

by KDJ

I have been going to the Saloon for many years - was introduced to Selvi when my regular haircutter relocated. In my first appointment with Selvi, she very thoughtfully explained her background and her fees. In my third visit with her just recently, I decided to go from very long hair to chin length. Selvi was encouraging and enthusiastic. We discussed what I was looking for and Selvi went to work. As I sat there getting this drastic change, I was grateful that I was inroduced to Selvi - she is a compassionate, gentle professional I would whole-heartedly recommend to anyone. She takes her time and always offers to blow-dry my wavy, full-bodied hair straight with no suggestion that it will cost "extra"! BTW, I love my new shorter hair and have gotten many compliments! Kudos to Selvi!
And if you want/need coloring - Florentina gets my vote with her personable and personal service.

Pros: Professional, Caring Service

Wonderful haircut from Selvi

by blueskiesinside

Selvi was fantastic. I have thick wavy hair that really loses body when it gets long. Selvi took the time to look at my hair, evaluate its condition and discuss a style with me. She was friendly and gave me lots of styling tips while she was cutting my hair. I would recommend her to everyone!

Pros: Lots of experience, friendly

My View

by Inacrunch

I read the review of a so called customer on hairdresser, Selvi. I responded to that review. Just in case it is only viewed by the person who intially wrote the review I wanted to let all who read these reviews to know that it seems this was written by someone who has a problem that does not include Selvi or Saloon. which unfortuately Selvi was a target. Selvi is a professional, compassionate person and that person who wrote that review and called her "psycho" is a very disturbed person. For all who go to Saloon whether you think prices could be cheaper, or the staff could be a little more professional, the bottom line is it is a pleasant place and yes there can be immaturity flowing through the air, but show me an establishment that does not have that. Look at the big picture Saloon and more importantly Selvi gets the job done and it is always wonderful. I would recommend going to Saloon and even stronger recommend Selvi to do your hair.

stylist to the stars (and now, me)

by lanabee

I already was a fan of this salon for its colorist (fabulous Fiorentina). and when my long-time stylist moved back to Panama recently (boo-hoo--I heart Marcos!), it gave me an excuse to try Saloon for a haircut. I booked an appointment with salon owner Frank (why not go to the top?) and was not disappointed. I got a great cut and terrific service, as usual. And the price .. Marcos, love ya, but if you stay in Panama, it may break my heart but won't break the bank!

Pros: friendly service, great results

Consistantly Great Hair/Great Experience

by bejessie

The Saloon is an amazing salon with great stylists. They are always clean and very friendly, and its just a very cool looking spot.. the hair color bar in the back is awesome.. I am an independent clothing designer, and lots of times when I have to photograph my clothing before it goes into boutiques I take a quick picture of it on me just for record of what I have made and often those pictures end up on the website. It is really important to me that my hair looks good, and living in NY we are all looking for a hair stylist hat is consistently great, honest, and professional. Selvi is that hairstylist to me. I have been seeing Selvi for about 3 years now. I followed her from another Salon. She has studied under some of the greats in Manhattan, and that type of training shows in her technique and precision. My hair is full of cowlicks and very hard to manage.. Selvi has taken me from long to short, to bangs to everything in between with ease. I have recommended numerous friends who swear by her abilities.. If you check my facebook page I even have people asking me for Selvis number on there. Selvi also does my daughters hair, who is of mixed race and has extremely thick curly hair (think.. Dianna Ross type of curls) My daughter LOVES going to selvi because when she drys her hair it is straight and gorgeous, and manages to do a cut that works both curly and straight.. and believe me, blowdrying and cutting my daughters hair is no easy task.. I swear I wish I could post a picture on this thing. The last time I went to Saloon, Selvi did my hair and she recommended someone else at Saloon who specialized in red coloring to do my color, even though the last time she did my red it was the best red I have ever seen, let alone had .. EVER (another sign of her loyalty to her customers) and when I tell you I got stopped at least 10 times for the next three weeks after that, I am not exaggerating. As far as I'm concerned everyone in NY is looking for a good and honest hair stylist, and when you find one you stick to them, and Selvi was that hairstylist for me. She is gifted in layering, as one of my girlfriends who I sent to her can attest. She went to Selvi after spending hundreds of dollars on haircuts in the city that were supposed to specialize in layers. She is now a Selvi convert. And I have NEVER paid 90.00 for a haircut with Selvi EVER. Besides that, common sense tells you to find out the price of a haircut before you get your haircut somewhere new.. so the negative comment below smells extremely fishy to me... Do your research.. look online at reviews for Saloon on the net and then look for Selvis reviews.. you will find nothing but great things about her on there.

Pros: Selvi

Cons: Nothing..

Good place excpet for one hairdresser

by Christine1024

I really like the Salon except for one hair dresser whom I am not sure is there anymore. She is psycho and overcharges you. $90.00 for a normal hair cut...whoa!!!! And she would not even blowdry it like I like it done, with a little wave. She said that was "extra". Extra, are you kidding me. Her name is SELVI. DO NOT GO TO HER!!.

So happy

by MNYC85

Before I got to the salon I really didn't like my hair; it had long layers, no shape nor volume, it sort of just sat on my head like a mop; but I didn't really expect my hair to do anything else. I had decided to try a new place for a trim.
From the second I walked into the salon I was excited to see the salon was rather spacious, super clean, and modern. I was greeted by a gorgeous girl with bright blue eyes named Gaby who washed my hair. I told her to be gentle bc I had a headahce all week and she gave me an awesome relaxing massage focusing on some pressure points to relieve the pain. Then I met Tia, I told her that I wasn't so happy with my hair and to do whatever she wanted with it but I didn't want the lenght to be shorten, so she started trimming, she used some crazy techniques that I had only seen done when I got a hair cut in Italy and I was absolutly amazed that people in NY actually used these techniques. After she trimmed it she dried it and trimmed a little more. She said that she likes to cut the hair dry because she can see extaclty how the hair falls when its dry and will know perfectly how to cut it. All in all I have never been so happy with my hair. I never looked good in side swep bangs and I don't know how she made them look so good on me, like I said I was amazed. I had body and volume and side swep bangs and she actually didnt chop my lenght in half like every other stylist. Then she taught me some techniques to style my hair when she was done. I am never going anyway else after that experience.

Pros: Excellent location, lots of open space, ultra modern.

Hairstyle Artist in Astoria

by JanetK710

I finally found the perfect stylist! After years of searching. I had my hair highlighted & cut by "Jennifer" She is such an artist. We had a long talk before getting started and I had no doubt that she knew exactly what I wanted and how to accomplish it. I have never had a better experience. My hair came out great thanks to Jennifer. I will never go to another stylist. And the salon and all the staff were great too, very nice atmosphere!

Amazing!

by dancinpitt22

I attempted to color my own hair and after that failed miserably I went to get it fixed. Saloon was incredible! Alex did my hair, but he didn't just do my hair. He asked a ton of questions about my daily routine, about what I like, what I want, and continued to ask questions and make sure that I was okay the whole time. He educated me on the whole process of coloring, cutting and hair care. I learned so much! But the best part was that he really did what I wanted, and made me my hair look unbelievable! I have never been so satisfied with a hair cut and color! Even though it is a bit pricey, this guy knows what he is doing and I wouldn't trust anyone else to do my hair!! Thanks Saloon and thank you so much Alex for everything!

Pros: Friendly, knowledgeable, talented

Cons: cost

Great place for great hair

by smellycat101

If you want great service and an awesome hair cut then definitely go to Saloon Salon in Astoria Queens.
The service is definitely worth the price. Most of the time i don't even make an appointment but they manage to take me on the spot, regardless of how busy they are. I have never come out of that place disappointed. Every hair cut has been terrific, and i'm picky when it comes to my hair. They always know exactly what to do and what suits your face and hair type. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Most experienced hair cutters in town

I went to Saloon for about the second or third time and I'm just as impressed as I was the first time I visited. Florentina, the hair color specialist, does AMAZING amazing work. She gave me beautiful honey-blond highlights and made time pass by very quickly. She also offered some good advice on how to keep my hair color healthy. THANK YOU FLORENTINA.

Great Salon In Astoria

by traceyqns

Went to Saloon for the 1st time and was very impressed. It is a very relaxed environment very friendly. My bangs are too short and I needed help. Frank listened to what I wanted done w/my hair. He was honest and told me the front was too short to be able to flip out the way I wanted. He showed me how to style it so that it fell better. He then cut the rest the way I wanted. It is much better now. I can't wait to go back when the front grows out more so he can really fix the bangs. I would definitely recommend this Salon.

Pros: Convenient, friendly staff, great haircut

WOW - this one word, sums it up.

by sandj26

This place is getting 3 stars, because of the rude hairdresser and the non-disclosed HIGHWAY ROBBERY that occurred on my first (and only) visit to Saloon.

I had high hopes for this salon. My first time there, I just wanted to "try it out" with a simple trim. SIMPLE TRIM. I was apalled the the woman cutting my hair (I think she was from Persia?) was 25 minutes late... and carried a bit of arrogance with her when she DID finally decide to start cutting my hair - she passed the washing off to some young woman who was just as kind as could be... but it was unreal the hairdresser spoke to this young woman. RUDE! Anyhow - it was time for the cut and the woman softened up a bit.. normal hairdresser chit-chat... cut & dry - she was finished in about 30 minutes. I get up to the front counter and she follows me up to give me her card and the young woman behind the counter says, that'll be $86.00!! WHOA! What!?!?!? I think I had the look of annoyance on my face, because the young woman says, "What? - Did you want to tip on the card?" uh... Ok... I tipped the lady - but I was shocked at the price. I didn't ask for anything other than a TRIM. I was ok with the cut (It wasn't bad, but it wasn't $86. NICE either)... Just beware when you go in - ASK what you're getting into or you'll be surprised checking-out.

Pros: Location - and cut was decent.

WOW! Last week I went and got a awesome color application by Florentina. She was highly experienced and did a great job with my hair. She then reccommended me to a stylists named Alyssa. She cut and blew out my hair terrifically. My hair cut is easy to manage at home. They were both amazing people. I would definitely reccommend anyone to this salon for ALYSSA and FLORENTINA. I will definitely be going back!!!!

Great place for a mens cut!

by Hofnar

I do a lot of design work for Redken so I was very intrigued to visit this salon and get the whole "Redken Experience" Everyone from the girl who answered the phone, to the staff- was just great!

My appointment with Frank who was just great! Very friendly and very professional. I showed him what I wanted and he said what would work and what would not, but he really listened to what I had to say and the finished results were just great! He asked me to start to style my hair so he could see how I did it, then he gave me advice how I could make it looks it's best.

Most places I have gone to (like SPAce on Ditmars); they basically thin my hair to death, glob some product on it, and send me on my way. It always looked the same, and nothing like what I wanted. It really has been a long time since I have had a cut that I actually liked and Frank really gave me something. I will definitely continue to go to this salon, and I recommend it to all guys who want a good cut.

Pros: Very professional, polite, listen to what client wants, not pushy

Cons: Honestly nothing was wrong

Best Cut I Ever Had

by ABS0520

For the past 8 years I have followed hairstylist/colorist Rosanne all over Manhattan to different salons. Mostly high end Manhattan salons with a celebrity clientele and the price tag to go with it. My hair cannot survive without her. So when she moved to Saloon in Astoria I jumped on the N train and ventured into Astoria, not sure what I would find. To my pleasant surprised when entering Saloon I was greeted by a welcoming receptionist offering to take my coat and assuring me I would be taken in minutes, During the short wait I observed a pleasant staff all seemingly enjoying their job and an owner walking around and greeting the customers. Of all the salons I had been to with Rosanne this had never happened! After a great washing (with a little scalp massage) I was brought to Rosanne's chair. Before you understand how serious this is, you must know I am the most nervous/anal person when it comes to my locks. Before Rosanne I would intently watch a haircutter cutting each of my strands, analyzing if they were cutting too much/little, making my angles too hard or too soft never relaxing for a moment in the chair. Once I sit in Rosanne?s chair all of this goes away, she cuts/colors snips this way and that way all the while we talk, never about my hair. And when its all dry and she has spritzed and sprayed I finally look in the mirror and as usual it is perfect. All in all my experiences at Saloon have been nothing but wonderful! I have referred several people and we are all in 100% agreement! The #1 thing I have noticed in my time with Rosanne is my haircut stays forever. I am not one of those people who religiously gets their cut every 6 weeks, so this is very important. It just lies properly. I hardly ever dry my hair and when I just wash and go it dries perfectly in place, it just falls right. So now the only cutting fears I have is that Rosanne will move and I will have to take a plane to get my hair cut!

Pros: Best Cutter, Value, Friendly Staff, Convenient

Best Hair Salon at Saloon in Queens

by ArleneC

If you are like me, you want your salon to be friendly and not "stuffy". The Saloon in Astoria is just that and more. The talent there is just exceptional. You can always find someone in who is willing to cater to your every need. Joe will even take his make up and hairbrushes to your home or party to make the entire Wedding Party beautiful. Frank will ensure that you are matched up with one of his stylists based on your specific hair needs. Redkin has chosen this salon to be their headquarters salon. What more do you need to know.

One of the best in Astoria!

by felisfemina

I started going to Saloon in May after someone on astorians dot com recommended it to me. My first haircut looked really good at the salon but I had a difficult time getting the same style at home, so I went back a week later and Frank gave me a free re-cut which turned out great. He wouldn't even accept a tip from me although I really wanted him to since he fixed my hair exactly the way I asked. Since then all my cuts have been perfect. Frank always consults with me before he starts cutting to find out what I want and will tell me if something won't work for my hair type. He has recommended some of the Redken products sold in the salon and they always work well on my hair. The staff is really friendly, the prices are reasonable and the whole place is comfortable and casual. I've been to quite a few salons in Astoria and Saloon is definitely one of the best!

I have been going to The Saloon for many years and have always walked out happy with the results. I've gone in there knowing exactly what I want and got it. Sometimes I just want a change but am not sure what. For color, I ask for Joe or Kate. They are both extremely knowledgable and spend time discussing what will be done, even when I'm indecisive, they are patient with me. My color always looks great and natural whether I go light or dark. Friends always compliment my color and others are often surprised that I color my hair at all because it looks so natural. The Saloon is the only salon for me.

Service, atmosphere and experience A+++++++++++

by barbaraanne

I laughed when I saw the first two reviews about Saloon. This is one of the best salons, not only in Queens, but in all of New York City. They are cutting edge, willing to try new things, and most of all, honest with their customers. I have been at Saloon where I have overheard Frank, the owner, tell a customer a certain process wasn't good for her hair and offer an alternative...that WAS LESS EXPENSIVE than the original. Even the assistants who are learning their craft are fabulous. For the past 5 years, no one else had touched my hair and no one will in the future. Saloon is faboo.

LOVE SALOON

by brooklyn_muse

I have been going to Saloon steadily for over 4 years. Even after moving to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn from Astoria, Saloon is the only place that I will get my hair done. The owner, Frank, has created such a wonderful atmosphere at Saloon. Not only are the stylists and colorists some of the best I have ever seen, Saloon is a teaching salon as well, in which Frank gives the assistants a chance to learn their craft. Even when assistants have worked on my hair, I have walked out of there feeling like a million dollars. The reviewers who were not happy at Saloon, I can only say that they probably had completely unrealistic expectations for their hair. The customer base that Saloon has, speaks for itself. Not the one time can never make happy rare customer.

Pros: Professional, Friendly

My first experience with Saloon was remarkable. Having been to a
number of highly-rated salons across the U.S., this was the first time
that I was 100% satisfied with the quality and precision of my cut, as
well as the amicable personality of stylist/owner, Frank. Being one
who is extremely particular about stylists, I am happy to say that I
have found my salon of choice in NYC!

Pros: precision, personality, environment

My head is spinning...

by smushfacepup

Inattentive stylist spent more time "yakking," while pausing in between 10 minute snips of hair, coupled with water trickling into my eyes. Discussions were of everything else but the haircut in question, & there was so much interior/exterior people commotion and interruptions, that I seriously began to fear for the hair on my head! Cut took WAY longer than necessary, the stylist's concentration was NIL, & the salon's ambience was chaotic. The only thing missing was a traffic director! Afterwards, I ended up fixing my hair at home, & several weeks later went ELSEWHERE for an outstanding haircut. I agree with the prior review...do NOT have your hair cut here, unless you are willing to be a guinea pig for inexperienced cutters learning their trade or willing to have your head held hostage by someone who is obviously not very interested in the client sitting in the chair.

Pros: Good parking, Moderately priced, A+ shopping/eateries

ruined my hair

by betty8

I came to this salon to get my hair back to my natural color after a failed atempt to dye it myself. The young girl that did my hair seemed to be unexperienced and kept asking a middle aged man his opinion, who appeared to be the owner. We decided on a shade on medium brown that resembled my natural color. Although when it came time to wash out my hair, it was dark brown almost black. I displayed my unhappiness w/ the color, but the man came over and denied that it was a different color than we agreed on. He then proceed to give me fashion advice saying it was in "style". Now I have to go somewhere else to strip the hair color and dye it again! Needless to say I found this salon very unprofessional and I will not be returning.
