This restaurant features great pizza, delicious pasta and a nice atmosphere. It's one of my favorite places to get Italian food in the West Village. It's easy to get to and the prices aren't bad either. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Pros: Delicious food

Cons: Loud dining room

My husband and I frequent Gonzo at least twice a month, and as other reviewers have said, it is a wonderful place to bring friends and family....there is something for everyone on the menu. Every menu item comes in a generous portion. The pizza is fantastic, and every pasta is fresh, piping hot and delicious. They have an amazing pre fixe deal that does not skimp on portions or flavor, and it is only $30. They tweak their menu seasonally to make space for ingredients that are in season. Their butternut squash soup in the winter is notable. My favorites on them menu are the arugula salad, the rigatoni with meatballs, and the homemade chocolate pudding. The Italian wine list provides an excellent selection, and the staff are able to recommend wines readily if you are not familiar with the menu. I have had excellent service every time I have been here, attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The only downfalls are that it is not open for lunch and it can get loud in the back room during dinner rush times. Get there on the earlier side for a more private, quiet dinner, around 6:30.

I don't usually write reviews, but I have to tell you Gonzo is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. You can always count on them for a great meal. Their pizzas are amazing. So thin and crispy because they're cooked on a grill. And you can't go wrong with their pasta, especially the papperdelle with veal ragu. The other thing I really like about this place is that the menu appeals to everyone, not like some restaurants with menus so limited you might find one thing you like. I can take anyone here and know they're going to find something they like. In these tough economic times, I don't want to waste time or money going somewhere I'm inevitably disappointed. I know if I'm dining at Gonzo, I'm going home happy. This is why Gonzo has been around for over six years and has definately become my LOCAL.

Ate at Gonzo last night for the first time and I really loved it. I don't know how I missed this place for so long. I'm in the West Village all the time, but it is kind of hidden on 13th Street. Anyway the food was great. We had their "famous" grilled pizza, which lived up to it's hype. Also, the penne gratin was fabulous, although I took half of it home because I was stuffed. It's very rich. I still however managed to find room for a delectable brown sugar cheesecake. The other thing I really liked about the place is the warm friendly feeling. It might not be 4 star service, but the staff is very nice and go out of their way to make you feel at home. It also doesn't break the bank, which is really good considering the economy.

When my friend asked me if I'd want to check out a relatively new place on 13th St. called Gonzo a few year's back, I had no idea what to expect: Japanese knife throwers? A restaurant with a "circus-theme"? Was I wrong: Gonzo is a beautify-decorated place in an old townhouse with red and gold Tuscan walls. Try the grilled pizza, the grilled-onion salad, Venetian-style bar snacks called cicchetti, artisanal charcuterie and cheese plates, and seasonal entrees and sides meant to be shared.

My friend had reserved a table for th 4 of us at Gonzo. It was a great pick. We didn't want to leave the neighborhood and didn't want to go to a place where we had to dress to impress and walk out hungry. The food was simple but delicious and the staff was friendly and unpretentious. Only things that disappoint: no wine glasses and it did get very loud. But all-in-all, a nice place to go to in the Village when the food is more important than the bling.

Not an experience that I will cherish to say the least. I don't understand what people see in this place. Is everyone that deprived of quality Italian food. I spent $25 for veal palliard which was decent at best along with a summer corn and tomato salad that turned out to be nothing more than a plate of corn for $13. The menu was very limited and with the exception of a few pasta dishes there wasn' to much Italian-prepared dishes on the list. Geez....I've had better at grandma's house. Won't be back to gone-zo.

Cons: Quality of the food left alot to be desired, highly overpriced

I have been going to Gonzo since it opened. Sure , it has lost a bit of it's edge since Chef Vinny Scotto "Left The Building" but it's still the best in the neighborhood.
The restaurant is still "in the family" and I think that Vinny's sister has done an admirable job of keeping the quality up there.
Anyway, enough about those (fabulous) pizzas... Why doesn't anyone mention the Amazing pastas (Veal ragu or Clam pasta are my favorites) or the short ribs (great even in summer) Also, I never fail to find a new and interesting wine to go with my meal.
Sorry naysayers, In my experience, it ain't over for Gonzo yet !

I had a really nice meal last night at Gonzo. I hadn't been there in a while and was missing their great food. I had the corn & tomato salad and the shortribs and my friend had a meatball pizza. We sat outside and had a really lovely evening. It's so nice to go somewhere that you can depend on always being good. I'm so sick of going to mediocre places and spending lots of money for the privelege.

I used to love this place. But since the death of the Chef / Owner last year, it seems that the owners feel it is OK to let the cooks run the kitchen. (This is usually the first sign of a restaurant's demise). This was a Chef-Driven Restaurant ! Although it would be difficult for anyone to fill Chef Vincent Scotto's shoes, this lovely spot deserves better. I live in the neighborhood and have given it 2 chances in the past few months, both were disappointing. EVERYTHING was overcooked and under seasoned EXCEPT for the pizzas. When I asked my server who the chef was, I was told: "We Don't Have a Chef Anymore, It's Just the Kitchen Guys, But the Food is Still Great" I beg to differ. Also, the Manager could be more friendly and less condescending. She does NOT make one feel welcome. A terrible shame,
I actually feel bad posting this. (I RARELY post reviews at all)
And, yes, I am in the restaurant business.

I love Gonzo....Their pizzas are the best. I had the corn & mashed potato pizza and it was the best white pizza I've ever had. The staff are all so friendly and the wine list was nice. I started with a drink at the bar. The bartender recommended some type of fresh watermelon drink and it was WOW! The rest of the food was good too but the pizza stands out.

Went to Gonzo the other night and am always amazed at how good the food really is. I had a Spinach Salad & the Lamb Chops and my boyfriend had the Meatballs (which were fabulous!) & the Mushroom Pizza. The manager suggested a sparkling wine which was Pinot Noir and it was perfect for the weather. The block is so quaint and it was so relaxing to just sit and enjoy a great, unpretentious meal. Too bad the sidewalk seating area is so small.

What impressed me the most was not the substandard food or inferior service, but the huge rodent trap (yes rodent trap as opposed to mousetrap) on the floor next to my chair.

Gonzo is great. Every time I eat there I have a fabulous meal. And it's not only pizza (which is incredible), try the shortribs, they're the best I've ever had. The spaghettini with clams brings back memories of Italy. The other thing that's great about Gonzo is that the menu has something for everyone and they change it often. So if I bring friends or clients, we're not always looking at the same old menu like in some other restaurants. While Gonzo is not a fancy destination restuarant, it's a very comfortable place with friendly service and outstanding food. It's the kind of place you go to often and you can bet I do.

I ate at Gonzo last night and I have to tell you it was the best dinner I've had in ages. Gonzo had come highly recommended and this was the first time I've been able to dine there and it definately lived up to its reputation. We started with a wild mushroom pizza and caesar salad which we shared. I couldn't belive how good the pizza was and the caesar was one of the best I've ever had. For entrees, I had a duck ravioli which I loved and my companion had the baby lamb chops which were delicious. We were really full after that, but forced ourselves to try the brown sugar cheesecake. What a great choice. It's rare that you find a restaurant that you like everything. Gonzo is a keeper.

The food here is nothing special and the prices are high compared to other italian restaurants. The service was pretty bad too... but I think our waitress may have been new. Regardless, not worth the money.

For $200 our Christmas Menu was for the most part disappointing. The staff was very apologetic . However, the meal was mediocre. Too bad. I liked the feel of the people and the place . The food was too "Italian American" for that kind of money.

my wife and went to gonzo for a lowkey dinner, we went for the pizza, but wound up having a lot more. everything was great - we left stuffed and can't wait to go back - this is our new neighborhood haunt. it's great for groups and a quiet dinner for two. i highly recommend the pumpkin pizza and any of the entrees - brick chicken, the short ribs or any of the fresh pastas. we loved it!

gonzo has the best pizza - it is so thin and crispy and TASTY. i have recently tried the specials and the other entrees (used to only go for pizza) and everything is extraordinarily delicious. they have a new chef and the specials are creative and delicious. we switched to having pizza as an appetizer and a special entree for dinner. also, the short ribs are to die for!! i am going to gonzo every week!

Gonzo a very nice place to eat in west village. The restaurant is visually appealing with its beautiful mural job. The restaurant has a very nice selection of reasonably priced wines. The restaurant is straightforward and unpretentious. The proscuitto w/ melon was excellent as a first course place. The various entrees that we ordered in our party of 8 all received positive comments. The selection of gelatos is very good. We would definitely go here again

I started with the sundried tomato cichetti, a pizza and a wonderful light crisp bottle of wine. The pizza is the best Ive ever had. So light and crisp. I wish I could eat it everyday. Then as I continued to carb load, I ordered the macaroni and cheese which is truly out of this world. Other people at my table ordered the short ribs and could not stop raving about them. Of course, the desserts, which I NEVER order, were amazing. The cheesecake and malted milk ball ice cream are a must. Sitting outside is also a huge plus here b/c its on a side street so you dont have to see or hear a lot of traffic. Its also a beautiful street and if the weather is nice, you can have a hugely romantic night out there! I can't recommend this place enough.

We had a great dinner at Gonzo the other night. We started with a fantastic grilled pizza with sliced watermelon and prosciutto as toppings. The crust was just perfect---cracker crisp with just the right amount of snap. The combination of sweet and salty was intoxicating. The next course was a corn and tomato papardelle which was big enough to share. Two flavors that definitely speak summer to me. As far as main courses were concerned, I couldn't help reaching across the table to steal some veal milanase, but I found pig heaven in my fennel crusted pork loin. The waiter suggested a great crisp and balanced white wine from the Veneto. Who had room for dessert?

A meal at Gonzo's is like coming home for Sunday dinner with delicious food and none of the angst.
I have never been disappointed by any meal I have eaten there. There is always something new and tasty on the menu. Now that summer is finally here the watermelon grilled pizza is available again. Sit outside
have a glass of wine or two and people watch...a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.

I have not been one to write reviews for restaurants because I am selfish and like to keep good finds for myself and friends. Its like Yogi Berra said that place has become so popular nobody goes there anymore. But while I was on city search I happened to see a review with only one star and I couldn't believe it so I had to read this and everything that most people like about this restaurant this person disliked.
The pizza which has some unique combinations like watermelon (my personal favorite) the reviewer did not like.
The steak is enough for two is flavored with great seasoning and the roasted beets can't be beat. After going to this restaurant almost since the day it opened I can say I have never had a bad meal. Service was great 95% of the time the five percent could be chalked up to just being busy.
If you want to have a good time with several people or some one special I would highly recommend Gonzo.

Went to Gonzo on Monday night & it was busy! They had lots of new items on the menu & my date & I were happy to sample some of them. The sauteed calamari was delicious & light. I was glad because our main which was the special of the night, Italian Gravy was out of this world! A huge plate filled with meatballs & sausage with rigatoni came out. It was delicious. I was unable to eat my portion. But afterwards I had to have dessert and opted for the Chocolate semifreddo thing. Yum! I am defiitley going to be stopping into Gonzo's more often to see what other surprises I can try!

Gonzo is by far my favorite Italian restaurant in the city. The food is always great and the service is very friendly. I was there this past Friday and thrilled to see all the new summer items on the menu. We tried the papperdelle with corn and yellow and red tomatoes. It was FABULOUS. Also, if you're into corn you have to have a corn and mashed potato pizza. I know it sounds weird, but belive me it shouldn't be missed. I was craving Gonzo's famous penne gratin and it didn't dissapoint. The only problem was that I was so stuffed I couldn't finish my dinner. I did however, take a taste of the brown sugar cheesecake which was so good I ordered one to take home and eat when I wasn't so full. If you haven't been to Gonzo, you have to get there. You won't be sorry.

I don't know happened with the previous reviewers experiences at Gonzo. The pizzas were delicious. Maybe not everyone is familiar with thin crust pizzas & the veal ragu was amazing. I don't know which Manager they had dealings with but the women we met was extremely charming and gracious. Just because she's doing her job, she shouldn't be bad-mouthed like that. And by the way, where can you go and not spend $20 on food? The restaurant is not Burger King! I would gladly return to Gonzo and suggest everyone do the same.

Pros: Great Pizzas, Food

Cons: Loud Room

.

It should be illegal to serve such bad food. Trust me when I tell you to spend your money elsewhere.
The pizza, if they can call it that, is basically a rectangle-shaped pita bread with tomato puree and something that they pretend is mozzarella cheese. Granted, we New Yorkers are spoiled by delicious, authentic food but this is one of the few memorable times in eating out that I have not only been really disappointed but shocked by the terrible quality and taste of the food that I ate. They tried to pass off fatty, domestic prosciutto as genuine Parma proscuitto, their pizza as mentioned above is scarcely edible (and on top of that was served cold), and the veal pasta had this incredibly unappetizing brown sauce that had no flavor whatsoever.
As for the service, they don't win any prizes in this department either. They were unattentive and aloof, you felt like they didn't care....and it shows in everything that this pseudo-restaurant produces from the kitchen.
Thank goodness we have so many other places in this city to give our hard-earned money to!

It is such a shame because the food is overall good. But food minimum of $20 per person is ridiculous and stupid. We were a group of 7 people one night and ordered lots of appetizers and enough food with lots of drinks while waiting the last person to show up. And this female manager approached us and reminded the stupid food minimum, by saying "your order is away below the minimum." Our check total then was already more than $300 only including the drinks! We had not even ordered main dishes yet then!! The way she told us that was so rude and disrespectful. The restaurant of which manager drinks at the bar during the business time speak for itself.

Gonzo has an interesting, spacey atmosphere, great wine and selection, and some of the best pizza around. If you are looking for a classic trattoria with great service, i would suggest this place or Gradisca down the road.

I don't know what the previous reviewer ate but Gonzo rocks! The last time I went to Gradisca I was seated and waited 25 minutes before leaving because no one came upto our table. The time before that I had the lasagna and it was watery and runny. At Gonzo last week I had the lasagna and it had asparagus in it and was delicious. The bartender and the manager are really cool and love to talk wine. I guess they have to because there are like 50 wines by the glass to choose from. I live on the block and let me tell you, if you gotta eat Italian on 13th...EAT AT GONZO!

Head to Gradisca down the block instead. All our dishes were mediocre at best and service was not good at all. For the price, you can find so many other places that are way better. Don't think the atmosphere is anything special either.

I had dinner on Monday night at Gonzo and thought it was worthy of the great reviews that other diners had given it. That's why it was suprising me to read the last review. The pizza was thin but the waiter tells you that. It's not a surprise. I had the pasta with the ragu and it was very tasty. I had a great glass of wine but I don't remember what it was. The manager suggested I try it. It was some new rose they had just gotten in. I would definitley go back. As for Otto...I use to go there but the food and service has really gone down. Maybe all their attention is on Del Posto or something....Anyway...go to Gonzo. It's really good.

I have to agree with the naysayers on this one. We went hoping to try the grilled pizza, which was well-topped, but the crust is really no more than a scorched tortilla. The menu has a gauche, if not insulting, note that says there is a $20 per person food minimum. Ridiculous, particularly if you're a vegetarianyou'd have to order two dinners apiece. So, in addition to the pizza, we were obliged to order the lasagne, which was a smoldering, overcooked, overcreamed pile. Their hummus appetizer was chunky, gritty, and pastythe worst thing on the table. The wines on their list are unremarkable, but might be better were they cellered correctlyours was literally served at about 85 degrees. We had a way better time at Enoteca Otto. Funny that. Otto gets reamed on the Citysearch reviews, while Gonzo is a darling here. Just goes to show you that opinions are like... ...well, you know the rest.

I went to Gonzo tonight with a friend, and my friend got clam chowder, I got the house salad, and we split a margherita pizza. The salad was really nice... they had a couple herbs and spices in the balsalmic that made the dressing really tasty. The pizza was REALLY REALLY thin. If you think you've had thin crust pizza before, this will totally change your mind. The sauce and cheese on the pizza were both excellent (very robust flavors, chunky sauce, quite yummy), but the crust tastes a little too wafer-y for me... good, but not my favorite ever. It is extremely thin and crispy, and has that slightly charred taste on the bottom (oh, and did I mention that it's REALLY thin?) But it's a nice restaurant, the service was good, and the food was tasty... I wouldn't go rushing back, but it was a nice dinner.

I was at Gonzo's on Sunday and I was expecting it to be quiet but it was pretty busy. We had the Watermelon (yes, watermelon) Pizza and it was fabulous! All the food was great. I had the Spaghetti with Clam Sauce and my friend had the Corn Salad. We were so happy!!! The prosecco they serve by the glass was cooling and our server Carl was so friendly. I can't wait to go back......

I LOVE THIS PLACE. IT'S GOT A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD VIBE AND THE FOOD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! THE QUAIL IS DELICIOUS AND THE CORN & MASH POTATO PIZZA IS AMAZING. THE STAFF IS REALLY FRIENDLY AND I THINK THAT THE WINE LIST IS REALLY GREAT. NOT ALL ITALIAN PLACES HAVE SUCH A SELECTION OF WELL PRICED DELICIOUS ITALIAN WINES. I TRIED THE ROSE ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE MANAGER AND THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY REFRESHING. I WOULDN'T HAVE TRIED IT UNLESS SHE SUGGESTED IT AND IT WAS LOVELY. I WILL DEFINITELY BE TELLING ALL MY FREINDS ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!

The pizzas are flavorful - grilling makes them crisp and light. Sadly I've been wine tasting there three times and cannot find a single bottle that is drinkable. I've resorted to drinking Hoegarden at Gonzo. The first visit we sat at the bar and tasted 3 whites and 3 reds. While I appreciate fine wines, due to my budget regularly drink cheap wine. I am not that picky, but each selection was worse than the last. Second and third trips we tried 3 red wines - no matter what price range they all burned the palate: thin, dusty, zero finish - none acceptable. I am accustomed to drinking delicious $10 reds, table wines, at home and in other Italian restaurants like Gradisca which always features very satisfying, inexpensive wines. I do not understand why Gonzo cannot find similar. Very frustrating b/c we live two blocks away and love the food.

I initially determined that I would never return to Gonzo again and had my review all planned out based on my first thirty minutes in the restaurant. We waited for thirty minutes for our table, and after inquiring once about the status, we were rudely confronted by the hostess. However, the hostess must have recognized the error of her ways because we were treated like royalty after that point (a bottle of wine and two desserts on the house). The food was very good - any of the pizzas would be an excellent choice. The asparagus appetizer with the fried egg was nice. Overall, it was very good food for the price and is a good location for larger groups. The restaurant more than compensated for their initial blunders, and we certainly be returning for another meal soon.

Ive been to Gonzo several times. Each time Ive been there the service has been fantastic. The owners Vincent Scotto & Donna Scotto always make a point of visiting our table throughout the meal to see if everything is to our liking. During October they serve a pumpkin pizza which I look forward to every year. The other day a had the Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp which was absolutely delicious. I have recommended this restaurant to all my friends.

Gonzo is my favorite Restaurant in Manhattan, Vincent Scotta has to be the No. 1 chef in the world, his grilled pizzas are out of this world, he makes the best caesar salads [my favorite], the entrees are excellent not to mention the delicious desserts. Of course Gonzo has a great wine list which compliments their Tuscany style Restaurant. You have to try it.

In a neighborhood with a gazillion delicious, authentic Italian restaurants, there is no reason to go to this one. The only decent item on the menu is the pizza, but save your money and get it at the local pizza shop. The olives were too salty, the cheese plate was uninventive and forgettable, the wine list was paltry and overpriced, and the service was not helpful. Go to Otto, Po, or Lupa for similar prices and far better food.

Went to Gonzo on a Friday night. Was able to get a table for 2 within a half hour. The hostesses were very gracious and did their best to get us a table. While waiting we got really hungry and eyed the Tuscan Steak on the menu. We had to try it, even though steak was not what we thought we should be ordering in an Italian restaurant. The staff was really running around. The manager came up to our table twice. Once to ask if we needed any help with the wine list. She suggested a great Barbara (I don;t know if that was it). But it was wow! and went great with the steak which was a masterpiece! The best steak in New York. And I would definitley go back to Gonzo just for that but I think that I should try something more Italian next time.

With so many new restaurants opening it's easy to forget an old favorite. I hadn't been to Gonzo in quite a while and recently went back. I almost forgot how fabulous the food really is. Try one of Chef Vincent Scotto's signature Grilled Pizzas (we had the wild mushroom, corn & mashed potato looked great also). Go on to amazing Shortribs which are literally "falling of the bone". I couldn't decide between the Pork Tenderloin with Grandma's applesauce and Penne Veal Ragu so we ordered both & split them. This made for a perfect dinner. If you're feeling decadent give the brown sugar cheesecake or the ice cream sandwich a try. If you just want a little something sweet, go with the panna cotta with pineapple compote. To those who have never tried Gonzo, I say run don't walk to West 13th Street.

If you've never been to Gonzo, get there fast. The food's unbelievably great. I can't say enough about the Grilled Pizzas. The pastas and entrees are wonderful. They boast one of the "Best Caesar Salads" in town. They also have an extensive wine list that they serve by the glass, quatino (carafe) and bottle. Staff and owners are extremely friendly and the atmosphere is very comfortable. One other thing, you'll never leave Gonzo hungry. Portions are more than generous and the pricing is very reasonable.
