Words can not describe just how good the food and atmosphere here is. The interior of the building will keep you entertained for quite some time. Each time we're there the service is extremely fast. I personally like going for lunch or early dinner just to avoid the wait for a table.
I eat at Dinosaur BBQ an average of twice a week. That's how much I love their vegetable Portobello mushroom sandwich with spinach, tomato, red onion and cheese. (They also have a grilled cheese if you don't eat meat - just ask.) The food is consistent and tastes delicious eat time I order. A few of my favorites are the fried green tomatoes, creole eggs (expensive, but worth every penny) and their mac and cheese. My family raves about the mojito chicken, chili and, of course, the pulled pork. It is a fun place to hang out - especially in the summer when there are dozens of really cool bikes parked out front. The soups they offer are out of this world. Oh, and if you are there in December ask if they have gingerbread cake. Yum! SInce it does get crowded - you can always do a grab and go - just call in your order. It helps to have two people - one to drive and one to go in so there are no troubles with parking.
Who said that great barbeque has to come from the south? If you love barbeque this is the place to eat in Upstate New York. This has the atmosphere of a biker bar and in the summer there are rows of Harleys lined up out front. This only adds to how good the food is, their BBQ is slow roasted throughout the day in one of their own sauces and when you get it it is incredibly tender.
Since this is one of the hotspots in Syracuse, especially in the summer, arrive early and expect a long wait.
In additon as a response to some of the other reviews. This is a bar, what do you expect no noise for casual dining? That being said you can request a table in the outer room or even outside if weather permits. Hope this helps.
Dinosaur Bar B Q was highly built up to me. I couldn't wait to get there! The interior was very interesting, lots of character. You could even write on the walls. The food was just OK on my visit. The ribs were good, the fries were good. Hot Dogs, hamburgers were standard. Very casual...
The Dinosaur BBQ is excellent. Their pulled pork sandwich is out of this world and their fresh cole slaw is fantastic. I had the food at their booth at the Syracuse Fair Grounds where everything is cooked over wood fires and even at the fair grounds, the service was great.
Dinosaur Bar B Q has a huge rep for having great food and good blues music.
The music is good...
The food is OK. The prices are somewhat high and frankly, the atmosphere is annoying. If you're there to party, then it's fine. If you're there to have a meal, it is loud and confusing.
I know a lot of people love this place and it is well known. I don't think it is a BAD place, I just feel the hype exceeds the quality of food and service.
Still, some of the items on the menu are good. I am not a huge fan of Barbeque sauce so that really hurts the experience.
The atmosphere, as I said, is loud and more of a bar than a restaurant and quite crowded and loud.
The food is decent and some dishes are said to be really good.
I just didn't get the great hype behind the place. It was just an OK place to eat. Fun to sit and listen to the music and watch the bikers ad all but as a restaurant alone, three stars --- generously.
SO, I was all excited to try this "famous" restaurant that everybody loves. It is supposed to be a Syracuse staple, and I guess it is. However, I was sorely disappointed. The sauce was not that great (Carolina style--I don't think so) and the food was only passable. Perhaps it is not that bad, but after all of the hype of how great it was, and how they just opened up in New York City, I was expecting something a lot better.
The food definitely isn't worth the money you'll pay. Save it and go someplace else.
If you r a vegetarian DON'T COME!!!!! The atmosphrere is ok but if you have a headache or easily get them don't come to Dinosaur Barbeque please!!! The food is average & the portions are huge They take original foods from all over the world and put their own twist on it. If you like pie then come here for the famous sweet potato pie !
When my friends came in from out of town, I could not wait to take them to Dinosaur. I actually had a sense of community pride in the place. However lately, the quality of the food has gone down. It's still pretty good, but not worth the ridiculous wait, the "attitude" from the waitresses, and being rushed off your table to accomodate the masses. Even my roomate who comes up from Boston once a year just to make me take him their commented that we may want to try someplace new.
Pros: Food's still pretty good
Cons: Wait, Service
Dinosaur has it all for BBQ. There is nothing on the menu that anyone can talk smak about, but rather smak their lips at as soon as it hits the table. Amazing food, great blues music all the time, and really fun staff makes this restaurant/bar a must see for anyone in the area and even those not in the area. Make your way here and you will not forget it.
Pros: The staff, the food, the atmosphere...all these things make the Dinosaur BBQ " a Genuine Honkey Tonk Rib Joint"
Cons: sometimes over a half hour wait...but totally worth it.
After eating Carolina Barbecue for the past three years, this ranks up there with the best pork ever. The brisket is decent, but go straight for the excellent pulled pork or ribs and their delicious tender smokiness. My wife had the chicken once, but quickly returned to the pork--our favorite is the pulled pork sandwich with cheese--a masterful combination. Wash it down with a cold pint of Labatt's or Syracuse Ale. If you have one meal in Syracuse, eat it here. And don't worry about the line, it moves quickly!
Pros: Positively Perfect Pork and Ribs
Cons: The line
I'd Open the door, eat off the floor just to get BBQ at the dinosaur. The food is great and atmostphere is cool with the mixture of bikers and businessmen.
What is there to say that hasn't already been said. Cool atmosphere, best blues music in the city, real bikers, awesome food. Come by in the summer and sit outside. Watch some incredible bikes pull up. Come by in the winter for a meal that'll stick to ya ribs.
And buy the book...the recipes come out great too.
Pros: Waittresses, Ribs, Music
In all honesty, if you are anywhere within a 50 mile radius of this Syracuse treasure and don't make you way here, you are missing out.
It goes without saying that Dino's ribs are, by far, the best that I've ever had. My friends and I are on a constant quest to find better ones and always fail. The side dishes are varied but their pasta salad is the absolute best. If you want to get a good sampling of their fine meats, order the Tres Hombre (sp?). You'll get a portion of sliced steak, pulled pork and a quarter rack of their ribs.
Don't bother with trying for reservations. They don't take 'em. Try to go on a Saturday for dinner and you're best bet is to put your name down, walk over to a pub in nearby Armory Square, and return. It's well worth it.
Pros: Ribs, Sauce, Genuine environment
Cons: , for the unsuspecting, ...soul
TO EVERYONE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE CLOSE LUCKY YOU. YOU WOULD THINK I COULD FIND ANY B.B.Q TO COME CLOSE, IN THE SOUTH ...NOT!!!! I TAKE MY YEARLY TREC. TO YOUR AREA SO I CAN EAT DINO. B.B.Q FOR FIVE DAYS. AND THEN HEAD HOME IN HOPES OF MY SHIPMENT OF YOUR SAUSE MAKES IT......MAY-BE ONE DAY DINO'S. IN ORLANDO?
Pros: FOOD, SERVICE, PEOPLE
Absolutely the best food anywhere. I have been to the best the siuth has to offer but when I visited Syracuse on business and wandered into the Dinosaur for the first time I though I'd died and gone to BBQ heaven.
Pros: Great sauces, atmosphere, great food
Cons: limited seating, parking
