Allendale Columbia has a chronic bullying problem in it's middle and upper grades. The teachers and administrators have decades of experience in whitewashing the problem.

Allendale Columbia's social environment is characterized by a Darwinian-style survival-of-the-fittest social structure that's straight out of Lord of the Flies. During recess periods, gym periods, and even study halls, children are routinely left without supervision. The pressure they face causes them to gang up on the weakest child, who then is stigmatized, excluded, and bullied mercilessly. The teachers will conveniently look the other way until the targeted child gets hurt or parents complain. Their only serious attempts at addressing the bullying problem with children are long-winded behavior lectures, often delivered during classes in lieu of academic instruction. The bullies snigger and laugh during the lectures, and the teachers either don't know or don't care.

I would advise any parent to avoid sending their child to Allendale Columbia. If your child is unlucky, he or she will be victimized by the school's toxic social culture. If your child is lucky, she will simply witness the tacit approval for bullying and will find it disturbing.

We have had 2 children at Allendale Columbia School in the lower school. It was perfect for building a strong foundation and sense of self. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking for small class sizes. My child was in a class of 8 other students. This one on one type attention was perfect for our child who had some attention and focus issues. We feared our child would have gotten lost in a larger classroom setting of our local public elementary school. Having come from the NYC area and experiencing the private schools there, we were impressed by the culture and family feel of Allendale Columbia.

Terrible education for what one has to pay for. Compared to public school programs, Allendale is the same, even worse, except for the elitism and exclusivity the faculty, students, and their parents exude. Outside of their very mediocre academics, everything else is non-existent, i.e. sports and music department, along with any programs for learning disabilities, diversity, and community services.

My son has been a student at Allendale-Columbia School for 11 years. The thing I like most about the school are the teachers. They are dedicated and caring. Having a child who is ADHD, I am in constant contact with his teachers. They are never too busy to meet with me. Since the class sizes are small, individual attention is giving to each child. The lunches are served family style. This gives students the opportunity to make friends with children in other grades. The curriculum is challenging and there are many AP courses to chose from. My son has gone on many field trips through the years and he still talk about them! I would recommend Allendale-Columbia School to any parent who is looking for a school with higher standards. And don't shy away because of the price, financial aid is available!

My two children came to the high school for one year and left immediately. The teachers are rude and try to talk to the students as if they are best friends, not student and teacher. The lunch system is offensive, because again you are with the teachers. The food is also very bad. My son described the mashed potatoes as "fried squirrel painted white", and my daughter once found staples in her dessert. The academics are good, but not individualized at all, and the small classes advertised aren't that small. The average class size was about 17 kids. The other students are exclusive and rude, and make fun of other children. The athletic program is awful and the teams all placed last in the Division 4 Finger Lakes League. The drama program is good, but students had to participate in it, and some were too busy doing other things, like my daughter. The class trip to Silver Lake was very disappointing, as it was a camping trip that my daughter hated. They had to sleep in tents, and they came back smelly, dirty, cold, tired, and hungry. Worst of all, it was mandatory. There were almost no field trips or opportunities outside of school, and this left things to be very boring. There are also way too many vacation days and days off of school or spent doing nothing. If this is what I am going to be getting by paying $40,000 a year, than I am astounded. This year, my children are going back to the public school.

I have gone to school here for two years, coming from a public middle school, and I really like it. The academics are good and challenging, and the atmosphere is great. The drama program is good, along with the art program. I would recommend this school to another person any day.

Allendale offers a good academic program, but the high school is not as challenging as my daughter would have liked. The atmosphere is good, but some of the teachers can be less than helpful. Because of the small class sizes, my daughter found that some people were excluded and/or made fun of. Depending on the type of educational experience that you are looking for, I would say that Allendale Columbia is only for a certain type of person. Also, because of the high tuition, it may be more worthwhile to go to a better, cheaper school.
