Salt Restaurant is a warm, intimate restaurant in Soho specializing in Seasonal American food. The open kitchen, communal tables, and friendly staff all contribute to the convivial nature of the restaurant. While maintaining a casual environment, Salt focuses on preparing the finest seasonal ingredients with care and simplicity. Salt is truly a unique restaurant in New York City. As Zagat's states Salt is "something of an insider's neighborhood joint."
We went to Salt before an off-off Broadway show nearby, and we were so pleased with our meal, the service (even when we had to speed things up a bit toward the end...they were more than accommodating). The wine selection was decent, not exceptional, but the food was wonderful. A cozy, comfortable place with delicious food best shared with friends.

Came here for dinner and it was very crowded (but I like to think that's a good sign - and it was). My date and I started out with this crispy salmon jerky as an appetizer. Both are meals were wonderful. I ordered the organic chicken breast with cauliflower puree and ate every last bite. Dinner would have been close to $100, but we used a Restaurant . com coupon (and I'm very glad we did). I think the portions were alright, just a little smaller for my taste but the food we ate was yummy.
Pros: All the food was good
Cons: A bit pricey, and loud when crowded

If you are looking for the perfect restaurant to have your wedding, shower or any other private party, salt restaurant is the best little place in SoHo.
Pros: Delicious food great wine list
Cons: none

great brunch can't wait to go back to try their dinner menu. Very good service. Went there last week with a group and had a fantastic time
Pros: food

Salt was a great choice. The food was excellent as was the ambiance. Service was well above average. However, the main reason I'd go back is the food.
Pros: Food
Cons: None

Meh. Not worth the price or the reputation. Eaten here formally 5 times ( five dinners) and none of them were particularly good. Not bad, but I could make the same foods just as well in my tiny studio kitchen and pay half as much for a bottle of wine as I would for a glass here and be more comfortable and happy and have a better time

Delicious food that actually tastes homemade served by friendly people in a very cozy, relaxed environment. Excellent spot for a dinner with a friend or significant other. Highly recommended.
Pros: Cuisine, Atmosphere
Cons: None

I went to Salt on a first date because of a friend's recommendation. What a great call! Intimate setting, GREAT food and excellent service. I'd definitely go back
Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance

great food at this cozy restaurant. even though the seating can be a little annoying (somewhat cafeteria style--long tables), the food was delicious, the service wonderful, and overall an unpretentious place with great food. will return!

This food was so fabulous I almost ordered a second entree. Cute spot. Cute waiters. Great wine list and surprisingly reasonable. The chef is amazing--and charming too. Great service. I can't wait to go back.
Pros: Fabulous

We've been living- and eating- in NYC long enough to have eaten almost everywhere and look out for the gems. The food at Salt is simply delicious; everything from the amazing bread to the home made pasta to the perfect deserts- every mouthful sings. If there's anything that lacks, it's the space between tables, where you just have to hope you're lucky enough not to sit next to the two 30somethings loudly talking about their boyfriends and nights out. Try to go on early-ish on a weekday night if you actually want to have your own conversation, if not just focus on the amazing food! We'll be back.
Pros: Amazing, flavorful
Cons: So "cosy" their conversation might as well be yours!

This is the kind of place diners and restaurant owners dream about. The "perfect meal" is an illusion, just like the "perfect golf game", but what you DO get at Salt is a bunch of really hard working young people who take pride in their restaurant. The waitstaff are knowledgable and enthusiastic. The wine list is small but reasonably priced and well chosen. Out of the tiny galley-style kitchen, three teenage-looking cooks deliver masterful high-end comfort food-- well seasoned, cooked to specs, and rich in flavor. I have dined here several times over the last year and have always left with a huge grin on my face, and with a proportionate dent in my wallet. Salt is the kind of restaurant that makes NYC special....I wish more places would adopt its "keep it simple, keep it small, keep it focused, keep it fresh" approach! Keep it up guys!
Pros: solid, unpretentious food, small but excellent wine list, excellent service, good value
Cons: multiple parties share the same long table (I like it but some folks may not feel comfortable with this arrangement)

What a nice change of pace. After being disappointed at many NY restaurants as of late, Salt was a welcome relief. Great waitstaff, delicious food and romantic ambiance. I'm glad I found this on Citysearch!
Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance

The first time my wife and I walked into Salt, we were bruskly told that the restaurant was closed, even though the door was open and all the candles were lit. As we retreated back outside, the hostess yelled to us that they'd be opening soon and that we should come back in a few minutes, which we did. I was really impressed with Salt's wine list, considering the snugness of the restaurant; and I had never before seen a dining room glow from so many rows of alabaster votives. That night, I can only recall a single red-meat item on the menu: all others were little jewels of seafood and fowl. We both enjoyed the fish and found the integrity of each bite memorable. My only slight disappointment was the service: efficient, but unpolished. When the server took our wine order, she muttered something incomprehensible before shaking her head and disappearing off into the back. And our orders were taken with such clinical deliberation that I was reminded of being interviewed by my doctor. There are enough examples in New York to see that fine-dining, even of the casual variety, can do a little better. But in an otherwise seamless restaurant, it's hard to know if anyone would even notice.
Pros: food & lighting
Cons: efficient but unpolished service

Went here with my wife after recommendations from friends who found Salt on Citysearch. We found the ambiance to be quaint & romantic. The service was attentive without being bothersome. The food was the best part. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh. Hats off to the chef.

well, my wife & I tried this restaurant & found it well overpriced for such a limited menu & for a meal that wasn't outstanding. one of my favorite out to dinner entrees is roasted duck, although this duck was tasty, it was also quite chewey and had lots of fat. i prefer a crisper duck, w/o the fat. also, for the price we paid, i would've expected to have had an app & dessert, yet had neither and still paid more than most other restaurants in the city (village & soho) of similar quality.
Pros: tasty food, cozy (yet bit "tight")
Cons: overpriced, limited menu, waited forever for entrees, tables bit "too" close

I really liked Salt. I felt like I was at home. The food was served by friendly people. The ingredients were fresh and quite tasty. The ambiance & neighborhood made for a very enjoyable experience. Definitely will be back.
Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance

Had a reservation on a Friday night and arrived on time and was seated promptly and was provided menus. Good start so far... proceeded to go through the wine list and select a wine, appetizer, and main courses over the next 15 minutes.... only problem was no one seemed inclined to want to take our order or so much as provide us with water... I figured this probably wasn't a good way to start the night, so we left... mind you the restaurant was probably only 75% full, so it definitely wasn't a case of an overwhelmed staff. Food prices also seemed high given the relatively low-rent ambiance... good food? Maybe, but I'll never return to find out...
Cons: Long wait for service, no A/C on humid summer evening. high prices, low-grade ambiance

The place is nice and staff is fine. The food, however, left much to be desired. The tagliatelle really lived up to the name of the restaurant- it was so salty I could not finish it. The salmon was good, but something anyone can wip up at home. If you are looking for a good price and really good ambience this is your place, but dont expect great food. Eat here and stoll over to the film forum and you'll have a nice date.
Pros: ambience, price
Cons: food

It's amazing that such a small place run by 1 waitress and 1 busboy could be so amazing. The casual, yet, elegant ambiance is beautiful and not intimidating. The service is impeccable, knowledgable, and friendly. I go out often since I am in the industry... And it's been a long time since I've had food that was so memorable (had the roasted red snapper). The place oozes romance - but not in that couples only romantic way... The only downside was the reservation hostess who wasn't overly friendly... But I never got to see her anyway....
Pros: FOOD, service, ambiance
Cons: Reservation hostess

Salt was such a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is dimly lit with candles and is very cozy and romantic. The menu is pretty limited, but the food is absolutely delicious. For an appetizer, I highly recommend the honey-glazed dates wrapped in bacon...yummy. They also have a great wine selection. Definitely a great place to bring a date.

My girlfriend and I went to salt this week for the first time, and it was great! The food was awesome but really I was totally impressed by the service. Alot of times when you go to a small restaurant like this the staff can be very indifferent, but not here. Its seemed like every person who helped us was actually happy to do so. The manager even came over and helped us choose a bottle of wine that was amazing! We had everything the waitress recommended and she was right on! The eggplant, the rissotto, the dorade, and the steak were all delicious. Good job guys. My advice to everyone else ..... put yourself in their hands when you go here, they won't steer you wrong.
Pros: Service, Food, wine

That's right for anyone who lives in the neighborhood, you would have never thought it, but romance exhists in a restaurant on Macdougal street just south of Houstan. I brought a date here earlier this week and had one of those meals you don't soon forget. A beautifully lit room that wasn't too quiet (sometimes that can be creepy) a great bottle of champagne, the food was so tasty! I ordered the steak and my date ordered the dorade fish and they were both great. Pastis has nothing on this steak it was very flavorfull and tender. Everyone else seems to be listing what they like about a place so I'll do the same.... ROMANTIC, great fish, steak, risotto, chicken liver mouse. Anyone looking for a Valentine's Day spot, I highly recomend it.
Pros: Romantic room, Food, champagne
Cons: I didn't know , about this , earlier

Had appetizers at "Salt" in November 2005 and enjoyed the cauliflower soup, risotto, dates, and roasted eggplant. It was a quiet night, so we didn't experience the harried service and crowding. Returned on January 20, 2006 and were quite disappointed. The risotto and dates were still good, but the entrees were all mediocre: venison (flavorless and overcooked, despite requesting medium-rare), salmon (dry and overcooked), and tagliatelle. Service abrupt, bordering on rude. Ambience uncomfortably crammed; we were jostled and elbowed by passersby and neighbors throughout the course of our meal. Overall: "Salt" is not worhwhile. There are many better options at this price, with consistent food, pleasant service, and comfortable surroundings.
Pros: Risotto, Dates
Cons: Inconsisten menu, Abrupt service, Uncomfortably crowded

Wow my friends are regulars at this place and they took me there Saturday. One word DATES. They have these dates wrapped in bacon they were amazing! My friends made me try them and I'm glad they did it's now my favorite snack in the entire city. But the whole experience was alot of fun. We didn't have a reservation but we had a glass of wine at the bar while we waited and met some cool people and they got us a table even though it was busy, SCORE! Totally worth the wait... all the other food was great too and service was quick and friendly but those dates were awesome!
Pros: DATES

We had a 9 PM reservation, and when we arrived, we were told it would be a few minutes wait. Minutes turned into an hour-long wait with non-existent standing room. Manager tried to ignore this fact and was very rude and unapologetic when we complained. Also, whoever said the place was romantic was quite a kidder. The entire restaurant is one very crammed room where you have to move your table so people at the table next to you can get in and out. The food was decent, but at these prices, there are tons of better options in New York. Management must be making a killing from packing in and over-booking tables at the expense of class and quality of service.

Well I don't actually live too close to this restaurant, but when I went there they treated me like I was one of their regular neighborhood clientele. I'm a picky eater but the food was sooooo good! Wine was great my server Amy was very friendly. Got our steaks quick (one of the best I've had in a while) and desert was awesome pecan pie! They even sent us little dates for free. Over all it was the best place my friends and I have been to in a while though we live on the upper west side this is definately my new neighborhood restaurant . I love it!
Pros: Food!, wine, service

Had some friends in from out of town and went here after reading previous reviews. Made a reservation for 7:00 p.m. for four through an online service. When we got there the host insisted that we had made a reservation for three. When I insisted we need seating for four he then said we were going to mess up his planned seating arrangement and that "he really knew how to seat a room." I later went back and checked my reservation, it was for "four"! Very rude. He did finally seat us for four by the freezing cold door while patrons walked in and out. He also told us before we sat down that he might have to ask us to leave if we took up too much time at the table. The food was actually good, but the poor service just ruined the meal.
Pros: good food, wine selection
Cons: rude host, crowded, bad seating

Great food, quaint restuarant, and great out of the way neighborhood to walk around and explore. Higly recommended

This place was great, that classic small quaint tight SoHo restaurant. Wait staff was very cool & friendly & the ambience was phenomenal. It had the makings of a great place, until I got my entree which was horrible....almost repugnant. I got the pasta with sausage, onions etc. It was quite hard to eat, the combination of flavors gelled in no way shape or form in my mouth. So maybe I'm naive to the latest trends in dining, but I really didn't like it. Funny thing is my wife loved her food, thought it was some of the best she had had in a while. I guess I just ordered the wrong thing.
Pros: Ambience, Staff
Cons: Pasta

I found this place through the Diner's Deck, my new favorite dining guide for New York City. I had a fantastic meal and plan to bring my friends who are coming in from out of town here.

I heard about the cauliflower soup and although I'm not a big cauliflower fan, decided to give it a try. It was absolutely amazing! Very creamy (but not heavy) and smooth with a fabulous flavor, accented with truffles. The diver scallops (special of the day) wrapped with bacon and served with pureed potatoes was equally magnificent, offering a lively combination of tastes and textures. The chocolate cake was rich, moist and decadent, and the ever-so-slightly-tart olive oil ice cream served with it was a thoughtful and well-balanced pairing. The chef, Melissa, is truly magnificent! The communal tables, exposed brick walls and glittering string lights accenting the ceiling made for a cozy environment; and for those who want a little more privacy (as did Angie Everhart the night I was there), the front window tables offer a romantic retreat. Service was very attentive without being intrusive. A+
Pros: food, ambiance, service

Well maybe it was her first night, I dunno. But a server coming up to the table chewing gum while she went through the specials is not my idea of professional. Sure it's a laid back place but come on - to boot the service was slow and they flip-flopped servers on us a couple of times. Besides that the food was very good (not spectacular - I had the Brook Trout) and the space is very cute (but a bit loud - even for a Thursday) I'd go back if invited but would not make plans there again.
Pros: Nice Space, Good Fish, Nice for a date
Cons: , Gum, Together

This small restaurant delivers tasty food in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Service is great and the open windows make summer dining inside more pleasurable.

Salt was wonderful. Although all the starters sounded appealing, I followed Citysearch's advice and had the cauliflower soup with truffle oil. I'm glad I did--it was truly delicious! My main course, an interesting pasta dish with a very flavorful "sauce" of duck, garlic, onions, walnuts and various spices, was original and altogether enjoyable. My side of eggplant grilled with garlic was also very tasty, although a little SALTy, as were the braised leeks. My friend's lamb shank was pleasantly spicy and rather heavenly. While the restaurant was not crowded, the atmosphere was lively. Our waitress was most gracious, providing attentive service, while still leaving us adequately alone to chat up a storm. In fact she let us sit and sip for hours without any pressure at all. Salt was the perfect place for a great "girl's night out". And would be for a date as well.
Pros: Interesting cuisine, Pleasant service

After losing our reservations the hostess/owner had the nerve to be unapologetic about it and then was rude when we asked when we would be able to be seated. We waited at the bar and was served wine that had turned. I will never go back.
After the attitude and the bad wine, we didn't even stay for the food.

This place has amazing seafood dishes and the mashed potatoes melt in your mouth. This is my favorite restaurant in NY. It's small and quaint. With a great wine selection, it's great for a date, and for a party.
Pros: Great Food, Fresh Veggies, Great Wine Selection
Posted 07/10/03
Salt is great, underrated and underappreciated. It's very low key and unpretentious, but the food, ambience and service is top notch. The seafood dishes are excellent. It's a cozy place that's great to impress a date. The waitstaff are friendly and attentive but unobstrusive. All in all, Salt makes for a great dining experience.
Pros: Romantic, Excellent Food, Value
Cons: None
