I've been to Rang Mahal several times for dinner, and have never had a bad time or a bad meal. The food is delicious, and can be prepared as spicy or as mild as you want. The lamb dishes are especially good, as are the freshly made samosas. Portions are very generous and prices are very reasonable. The service is a bit slow on occasion, but on the other hand, they never rush you through your meal. I highly recommend it.

The 1812 Overture of Indian food. Indian restaurants in Hicksville open and close in no time. Rangmahal has been around for over 15 years. There are many reasons. Arun and Pooja own and run it. He in the kitchen and she in the front of the house. Trust Pooja to recommend the right dishes to fit your taste and bet your bottom dollar that Arun will deliver magic. Don't be afraid. Everything is not incendiary. The food will introduce you to a rainbow of tastes that will will thrill you. Crab cakes in an Indian restaurant? Yes! and absolutely delicious. I've eaten in Indian restaurants around the world. Rangmahal is as good as it gets.

My husband and I decided to try out this restaurant due to all the good reviews we had read. We had also seen the online menu (which included prices) before hand, and the dishes seemed appetizing and the prices seemed reasonable.
As soon as we walked in, we were surprised to see that there was only one other couple eating at the restaurant at the time (this was not a good sign). Also, the atmosphere was very dark and dingy, and not appealing at all. When me and my husband opened the menu, the prices were much higher than those posted online. I felt deceived, because they should update their online prices if there is such a marked difference. It is unfair to bring in customers based on posting cheaper prices online, and then actually have much more expensive prices on the actual menu in the restaurant. I felt like leaving at this point because I had been cheated, but my husband wanted to try out the place due to the great reviews.
When we got the food, the portions were very small, and the food did not taste like typical North Indian food. Also, just one glass of coke cost over 3 bucks, which is just a joke! There is only one waitress (because that is all that is needed at this place!) and she happens to be the owner's wife, so I wish we didn't even tip her, because they are making a huge profit off of us already! We spent a lot of money, and definitely did not get our money's worth. We will never go back to this place, and now I clearly see why this place stays so empty.

This restaurant has amazing, fresh food. All of the curries are made with fresh chillies, and the food is simply delicious.

Pros: Best place in LI

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Food is fresh and cooked by the owner himself. Many different types of curries and some special types not offered elsewhere. Also, many desserts and special breads.

Rangmahal is delicious. As previous guest have written I've eaten Indian food in various parts of the US and in South Africa. By far Rangmahal is the best. Each time I visit Long Island my friends now where I want to eat. The food is well prepared and is worth the $$$$$$. Next winter I plan on taking the cook up on his offer to ship food to me in North Carolina. I don't know about other restaurants in Long Island, but I have no need to try the rest, when I found the best.

BTW: the chilli chicken is delicious. If you like your nose to run while eating ask for 9. The food will be hot, but stil enjoyable.

I love Indian food and have eat at Indian restaurants in several countries. Arguably, my meal was one of the best I have ever had. The portions are generous and I ended up taking some home, which I spread out over two meals. Very yummy and I highly recommend!

Pros: Personalized service; loved that they tailored the spicyness of the food to my preference.

Cons: None.

Ignore the recent reviews, this place has gone downhill and when I say downhill, I say avalanche.
This used to be a hot restaurant, especially 10 years ago with the lunch buffet.

Unfortunately now a days the food is so so and the prices extremely out of line. Expect to pay 50 dollars for lunch, with the menu prices inaccurate. The waiters will req. the most expensive dishes.

I warn you to ignore past reviews, this has gotten really bad for the past 2 years. Same with Kiran Palace, though they seemed to change management. Go with HOUSE OF DOSA

I set out one day in search of some outstanding Indian food and can't believe I found it. As I drove up and down Broadway in Hicksville, passing one Indian restaurant after another, one kept catching my eye. In large bold letters it read "Best Indian Food on Long Island". I thought to myself: "thats a mightly big claim, I think I'll give it a try". Im so pleased I did! I think my stomach started growling as soon I opened the door. The delicious aroma of Indian spice instantly make your mouth water.
Owners Arun & Puja tend to their customers personally. While Puja is serving up the best Mango Lassi I ever had and taking your order, her husband Arun is busy in the kitchen. The staff is attentive and friendly, the atmosphere warm and inviting.
The Chicken tika masala is mouthwatering in its buttery curry sauce that is hard to stop eating, the spinach paneer is delectable and so are the numerous naans and appetizers. Watch out for the vegatble samosas...they are really big! The portions are hearty so if your a party of two you will most likely take food home. The desserts are decadent and they have lots of variety as well as the more traditional Indian desserts. Their signature rose flavored rice pudding is heavenly.
Come to think of it, some of my favorite restaurants were always the ones where you were made to feel like a friend. Arun & Puja are warm and wonderful hosts. They will do what it takes to make sure you are satisfied. I have no complaints except one: I have to find a place in my fridge to HIDE the leftovers!
Visit Rangmahal soon!!!

So dissapointed with my experience here. I've had better indian food for a lot less. The food is overpriced and on top of that they charge more than the menu price. They participate in the restaurant com but will not honor the gift certificates making up the or own reasons not stated on the ceritifcate.

My family took me here for my Birthday. We enjoyed the best Indian food we've ever tasted accompanied
by attentive service. A worldwide traveler who joined us stated it was some of the best "hand-crafted" Indian
food he had ever tasted. Every detail was done right. Highly recommended.

Six of us - two from Westchester Co, NY, two from Montclair, NJ where some of the best restaurants, including Indian, are to be had, and our parents who live a town away from Rangmahal, met to celebrate a special family birthday. This was our 1st, 2nd and 3rd time respectively and Rangmahal never disappoints. The service always feels as if we are welcome guests in someone's home; it is that hospitable. Puja suggests delicious dishes from among the very wide-ranging menu and the flavors are complex and pleasing. We usually end up ordering more than we can eat as the dishes are so plentiful and the selection so enticing. But that way we get to enjoy our meals the next day, too, which makes the somewhat upscale prices more affordable. It is worth every penny but this is not a bargain, Indian buffet. Arun told us a wonderful story about their wedding celebrations in India. The rest of the staff were also very attentive and nice people as well and we never felt rushed although we stayed quite a long time eating and talking and enjoying ourselves. We were surprised by a complimentary birthday dessert (I cannot promise this is standard) and we all felt relaxed and very satisfied - by food, mood, service, atmosphere and the whole experience. Rangmahal is a very special restaurant run by a very special couple. P.S.: Dynamite cocktails; try the ginger martini with fresh juliennes of ginger.

We have lived on Long Island (in the Hicksville area) for years. The neighborhood is full of restaurants, but there are a choice few that stand out brilliantly, and Rangmahal is one. Patrons are greeted with a warm smile from Puja (your hostess), and the mood for a lovely evening or afternoon dining experience is set. On many occasions we have enjoyed the specials recommended by Chef Arun (and you can NEVER go wrong with his suggestions), but tonight we felt like trying a few basic and traditional dishes - a simple Chicken Korma and a Palak Paneer. They reminded me just how special Rangmahal really is, as both dishes were exceptional ... and we have eaten at many Indian restaurants around the country (and in Canada!). Another great point is that the staff truly makes you feel welcome. Your preferences are always asked for, and suggestions are always made with a smile but without pressure. We usually go for them, and we've never regretted it. The authentic Indian beverages (lassis, coffees and Chai teas) are also a nice way to complement any meal here. When you are in the Hicksville area, stop in for a fine dining experience at Rangmahal. And rest assured, after your first visit, you'll be perfectly willing to travel to come here from just about anywhere on the Island.

We travel along way for good food and Rangmahal is right around the corner... For us it is really a no brain er. The atmosphere along with it's proprietors are warm and welcoming. The meals are done to perfection. The flavors are clean and yet warm and well rounded. If you are new to Indian food or you just don't know what to order, talk to the lovely ladies who take your order. They will advise you in a direction that is most appropriate for your palate. Their mango Lassis are one of the best around. If you can, try to have desert with either the Chai tea or Indian coffee. You will not be disappointed.

i've never written an online review before, but after visiting arun and puja's "rangmahal" i couldn't resist. i've eaten at some of the best indian restaurants in manhattan, london, san francisco and los angeles, and rangmahal ranks as one of the best. the atmosphere may not be as sophisticated, but you cannot feel more welcome anywhere. arun and puja's son recommended a ginger martini to start things off. if was fantastic. then puja came over and told us the specials. we put ourselves in her hands and were glad we did. no samosa's or chicken tikki masala for us. extraordinary appetizers, fish, panir, and out of this world lamb chops. we finished off the meal with homemade indian ice cream. we will definitely be returning with a crowd.

You'll have a very hard time trying to top the quality of the food here. The service is splendid as well. Pace yourself, the menu is vast and everything on it sure to please. Since its a la' carte, it can get a little pricey; but worth it. If you appreciate fine Indian, dining here is a must. Go and enjoy !

I have lived in Long Island for a number of years and have always passed by this place. Finally one day my boyfriend and I decided we had to try it. We are now both hooked and have to eat here at least once a month. The chef is an absolute genius with his choices in spices and curries. The lamb chops are simply to die for. With a bottle of indian wine, this is the best food on the island and in all of NY. We have brought friends and family here and have converted them in to lovers. There is no better place than Rangmahal for us!

A wonderful place. Despite an unassuming external appearance, this place is cozy and comfortable. The service is friendly and caring...the chef will come out midway through the meal to discuss the dishes and solicit comments. The waitperson is totally familiar with the offerings and will guide (but not push) your selections. The food is exceptional, totally on a par with top Manhattan Indian restaurants...try the flaming lamb chops, the chicken vindaloo and tikka masala... It is not inexpensive but good value for an authentic meal that transports you into an Indian home...

We live in New York City and spend most weekends on long island and our favorite restaurant on long island is Rangmahal. It's the best Indian food in New York, including Manhattan. The chicken tikka masala and saag paneer are two of my particular favorites. And, they make it as spicy as you like it, they're not afraid to make it really hot. The service is outstanding and it's an overall wonderful experience. I highly recommend Rangmahal in Hicksville.

This was our first time eating Indian food, and we couldn't have chosen a better place. The decor and music set the tone, and the food, which was fantastic, made this a wonderful dining experience. It is family owned & operated, and everyone genuinely cares about the customers satisfaction. We definately will return to try more items on the menu including dessert!

This is my first review because after eating at Rangmahal, I knew this restaurant deserved this review.

I've been to many indian restaurants, most in the city/Manhattan but nothing even comes close to the unbelievable cuisine I discovered tonight. The service was quick esp. with the waiters refilling our glasses as soon as they were empty. The staff was very polite and friendly.

As for the food, my boyfriend and I could not stop talking about it. Everything was very tasty, succulent and fresh. I ordered the Chili Chicken and didn't think it would be spicy enough for me, but I was more than satisifed because for once "hot" meant "hot".

And to top the night off, we personally spoke to the chef, who was very easy to talk to and very honest and friendly. So all in all, I would recommend Rangmahal Indian Restaurant in Hicksville to everyone. You won't be dissappointed!

This was the best Indian food I've ever tasted.
Priced Higher than average, but well worth it.

Every dish our birthday party of five ordered, be it vegetable, lamb or chicken (next time, I'll try the fish!), was prepared with artful skill and loving care.

The seasonings were tasty without being overwhelming, the sauces...well, you wanted to use every scrap of rice and/or bread to sop them up.
Ahhh, the breads, pappadam, rice - they too were made with care...
The Ginger Martini was wonderful and so refreshingly different.

Our party started out with an appetizer of baked cheese on a bed of seared onions. We all shared two lamb dishes - one in a lovely red sauce, and one dish of tender lamb chops sparsely but teasingly seasoned with cilantro, chicken in a creamy coconut sauce, and vegetables in a coconut seasoned sauce, and the classic but humbly delicious spinach -with- cheese- dish found in most Indian restaurants.
Warning: Even after eating a full feast at Rangmahal, one will not be able to resist the desserts!

The lovely lady who took our orders was charming and attentive without being invasive, and the chef was not only accessible , but treated us like friends or even family...

Bravo, Rangmahal! We will be back for more!

Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, great food, great place to celebrate anything

Cons: none that I could think of

.

I came with my friends, who highly recommended it to celebrate my birthday. I couldn't believe, that for 14 years we have not been aware of this gem. The interior is awesome:clean, red chilli peppers string lights, hut roof for special traditional occasions, many other national decorations. Great selection of very exotic cocktails with natural ingredients, like fresh coconut or amazing ginger martini. And drinks are large and strong! And then came the food...! And, when we thought it couldn't get any better came the dessert tray...! Nothing sticky or doughy or syrupy, just heavenly. And the owners themselves is not the least amazing part of this restaurant: when you leave, you feel like part of their family, which obviously takes great pride in what they do.

As soon as we stepped through the door, we were dazzled by the beautiful decor which includes, but is not limited to, chili pepper string lights, a sectional with a bamboo/straw roof, and many traditional Indian decorations. Of all the Indian food we have tried, theirs was by far the tastiest. It was obvious how much pride they take not only in their cooking, but in ensuring a wonderful experience. The 14 year old family - owned restaurant is run by father, mother, and their 2 sons, all of whom are very warm, friendly, and professional. I strongly recommend the malai kebab, paneer makhani, and their nan is succulent. The dishes my friends and family ordered were delectable as well. When came time for the dessert, one son brought out a tray filled with a tasty compilation of ice creams and little tortes. We came here to celebrate my mother's birthday, and plan on celebrating other occasions here as well. It is very difficult to be disappointed. They even brought out dessert with a candle to honor her. We could not have asked for a better gourmet experience. I highly recommend the ginger martini!

When you hear 'Indian Food,' the first thing that usually comes to your mind is something that is overly infused with curry-at least that's what always came to my mind when I thought of it. Rangmahal changed all that. Their food is phenomenal and proved to me how wrong I was to think that curry was the main component in all Indian dishes. So well seasoned with fresh herbs and spices-it's very rare to find a place that can make tasty, succulent meat without using an exorbitant amount of salt to flavor it. I recommend the lamb chops very highly, but really any dish that you choose will be a great choice. I have never been dissapointed with anything that I chose on the menu from the appetizers right down to the desserts. I also recommend trying the Mango Lassi (a sweet yogurt drink). It definitely hits the spot.

I was out looking for an something spicy and remembered seeing a few Indian (or Pakistani, or other SE Asian restaurants) in the area. This was the first place that I spied so I wheeled around and got a parking spot right out front. Let me start by saying that I really enjoy Indian, Pakistani, Thai, etc cuisines. Most of the "Indian" places that I have been to are about the same. The curry is a bit different from place to place, some are red, some are more brown, but overall, the places are more similar than different.
This does not seem to be the case with Rangmahal! I had the most incredible dish I have had in ages! It was an lamb with some kind of orange sauce with cardamom, cloves, ginger, garlic, etc. Everything in this dish was fresh, from the oranges to the ginger, which produced a flavor explosion in my mouth. To say that this was the most incredible Indian dish I have ever had is the least amount of praise I can heap on this experience.
When ordering, the chef (and owner) came out and talked to us about what we wanted. We both wanted something spicy however, he suggested that I not order this dish too spicy since the spice would overwhelm the citrus. Although he did make it what I would consider "Indian hot", it was not unbearable and was a great combination of spice and zest. We also had some fresh vegetables, of course cooked with some ghee, and other spices such as whole cinnamon sticks and cloves. The other dish that we had was chicken vinaloo. As far as vinaloo's go, this was a great delayed burn kind of vinaloo. It was hot, but not immediately hot. It was quite hot, but not so much that it was inedible.
All in all, this was a great culinary experience and I know that I will be back several times over the next couple months while on assignment in this area.

My husband and I enjoyed the great service and attention given by both husband (chef) and wife. I had the soft shell crabs in a wonderful sauce. The shrimp and cheese appetizer and bread basket were great. And finally the coffe, WOW, better than star bucks!

I've been to many Indian Restaurants both on Long Island and Manhattan, but when I found Rangmahal I was truly blown away. My mother and I had stumbled on the restaurant one day while traveling on Route 107 and decided to give it a try. Boy were we surprised! Not only is the food exceptional, but the service is amazing as well. I must say that we were both so impressed that we came back shortly after our first visit and took Dad there for Father's Day. He is a tough critic so for him to agree with us, this place is definitely worth it! If you enjoy Indian food as much as we do, you must give this place a try. Trust me, you will be very thankful that you did!

Surprise ! Surprise!
My wife son and I were in a daring mood and wanted to try one of the areas many highly touted Indian restaurants. We whittled the choices down to three and luckily chose Rangmahal. The place was empty when we arrived, but this was to our advantage as we were given a friendly and thorough tour of the menu by our helpful hostess. She made suggestions not according to some formula or what she had been told to push, but tailored her ideas to our tastes. Even the beer she suggested, Old Monk, was a good one. As to the food itself, it was out of this world. My son's garlic chicken--too generic a name for such a complex dish--was a perfect blend of savory with a hint of sweet, creamy without being overwhelming, and the chicken itself was to die for. Although my chicken dish clearly contained many of the same ingredients as my son's, it was a whole 'nother experience. And the breads! Amazing. Their chili nan was worth the trip. As my wife said, "I've never had bread be the hottest or most fascinating course." The help was professional and attentive without being overbearing or chummy. The chef was a proud and pleasant man who was gracious in his thanks. Best Indian cuisine I've ever had.

My boyfriend and I went there this past weekend and it was fabulous. The food was delicious. We shared Samosas and Chicken Tikka Masala and of course Badami Lamb which was one of there specials. all three were excellent but especially the lamb. The service also was very good the waitress was attentive and did not rush us and after everything the chef even came out to make sure everything was good. All in all a great experience and you best believe we'll be going back.

The food was magnificent and the service was impeccable. It is a family oriented restaurant and they are very concerned about the quality of the food. The chef even came out to greet every customer and asked us about the quality of the food. My fiance and I have been to many Indian restaurants in Brooklyn and NYC, and by far, this has been superior in quality and in service that I have seen. Food is a little on the pricey side, however, it is worth it for the unique taste that you get.

Imagine 12 people having 12 different meals and every person having an extraordinary taste experience! We ate at Rangmahal last night and we have to say it wasn't just a meal it was a celebration of unique tastes from mild to spicy. The service is truly special with the hostess catering to our every need. We were served as if we were the only people in the restaurant. We were even treated to a surprise visit from the chef! We could not have asked for more. We highly recommend this restaurant where you can take your time and enjoy a truly memorable meal.

We just celebrated a birthday at Rangmahal and it was a great night. We were welcomed like family and were made to feel so at home. The staff are so warm and sincere. Impeccable service.
Now to the food....it's the best Indian food around. Excellent flavors, wide variety of specials....the lamb chops are a must! Truly a wonderful chef who takes the time to come out to say hello and to ensure his guests are satisfied.
Definitely worth trying the Indian beers and wine.
We'll be back for our next family celebration. Excellent place to celebrate any special occasion.
Thank you again.

After searching on Citysearch I found this restaurant. Over Thanksgiving weekend in an attempt to get away from all things turkey I took my entire family - 5 of us for some Indian Food. Arun and Puja are gracious hosts and will try to help you naviagte the large menu, usually filled with specials. We had Lamb Briyani, Chicken Saag, Tandoori Mushrooms, Chicken Tikki Masala, and many others. All was delicious and very fresh. Even though we had teenagers, age 16,15 and age 10, everyone loved the food and there was none left.

We've been here for dinner several times and have never been disappointed. Last night was no exception. We were greeted as family by our hostess as soon as we entered which made us feel very welcome. The two specials my husband & shared were succulent: Lamb Narangi, with a wonderful orange-flavored sauce and Chicken Vegetable Mangoli. Both were prepared just as we ordered, very mildly spiced. I enjoyed every bite of each. The chef came over several times to make sure we were enjoying our meal.
We will definitely return soon because we feel so welcome here and the food is better than many other Indian restaurants we have tried both on LI and in NYC.

I've never had a bad meal here, the food is fresh, expertly cooked, spiced to your taste and offered in great quantities. The owners are always ready with expert recommendations on new things to try. I have had many vegetable dishes and most especially like the chicken vindaloo and the chicken biryani. There are always many specials and appetizers to choose from, and it is a very comfortable restaurant whether you want to eat a meal there or get some take-out for home. Plan ahead to save room for the rice pudding or you will find yourself stuffed! Other dishes not to be missed are the many varieties of bread and, yes, even the chana masala, while simple, is a very tender treat.

You would think food made with love says it all, but there is soo much more to it. . . Rangmahal is a family run restaurant, he cooks, she greets and helps serve along with one of their sons. The resuarant is beautifuly decorated- indian tapestries, statues- making you feel like you are in another land. You can sit in the middle of this small, yet by no mean claustrauphic restuarant, and be seen, or you can choose one of romantic nooks falling in love. Ok, so the food- Amazing!!!! Especiatially if you are vegetarian. They make homemade soy chicken that is out of this world!!!!! He spend two days making it and you can have it with any kind of curry- that right fellow vegatarians- even tikka masala :) They also make, by far, the best vegtable briyani i have ever had. Their use of spices has always been perfect!!!! Their veggie dishes in general are always spectacular. As far as apps are concerned, im not usually a somasa fan, this place changed my mind!!!! The deserts are works of art, beautifully presented, bring a camera and take some pictures. So not only that, they have a cool drink menue- so you don't have to stick with the king fisher. For you non-drinkers, they also make a great rose lemonade. On top of the best indian food, the owners are such wonderful people, their only concern is that you enjoy a special culinary experience. Go there with an empty stomach, you will not be dissappointed!

I have been to many Indian restaurants but I have never had such good Indian food. Not only do they make great traditional dishes they also play around with many different ingredients that are in season and fresh. Not only is the food great but the service is fantastic, they make you feel right at home and are very very accomodating. Between the food, atmosphere, and warm service It is a great overall experience.

I went to Rangmahal for the first time tonight after hearing rave reviews for a number of years. The only regret I have is that I had not dined here sooner! I've been to many Indian restaurants on Long Island and NYC, but Rangmahal is by far the best. The food was amazing, flavorful, creative and tantalizing (mushroom tandoori, navratan korma, chili chicken to name a few). The lychee bomb cocktail and mango lassis were also top notch as was the decadent dessert of mango with vanilla ice cream surrounded by a shell of chocolate and fresh coconut. The food itself will keep me coming back for more, but I must say that while the food was delicious, the most refreshing aspect of Rangmahal was the service. From the moment we walked in we were welcomed by the owner as if we were long time customers. She was warm and friendly and more than willing to explain the specials to us and answer any questions we had. The chef also made several trips to our table to make sure we were satisfied with each course. I loved the food so much that I wound up ordering another meal to bring home to my husband--he also loved the food. I will definitely return to Rangmahal as soon as I can. Thank you, Rangmahal, for the wonderful food, service and ambiance!

My husband and I have been to Rangmahal more than a dozen times, even though it's out of the way for us. The amazing thing is that it is consistently excellent in every way. The food is by far the best Indian my husband and I have ever dined on -- and we've eaten in several Indian restaurants in New York City. My husband (who's Jewish) calls the owners his "Indian Mama and Papa." He loves the way they both visit the table and check on whether everything is OK and if we're enjoying the meal. Every item on the menu is exceptional, from the moist delicious chicken tandoori to more exotic items on the specials menu, such as prawns in papaya sauce and other surprising flavors. The mix of spices is like pure alchemy on some of the dishes. Okra is one of my favorite vegetables, and even though my husband doesn't normally like it much, he raves about the way bindi is prepared there -- carmelized and crispy and surprisingly scrumptious. I can't say enough about what a pleasure it is to have dinner at Rangmahal.

Cons: None. Although it is not cheap, it is worth every penny.

Great selection with very friendly service. Be sure to try the specials and recommendations from the staff. Trying a new dish here is usually the way I figure out my new favorite Indian food. Overall, there is great food that will please everybody from the veteran fan of Indian food to somebody looking to expand their palate. Highly Recommended!
