LOVE this place. Only place in NYC that I have found that has good tex-mex queso. Margaritas are dangerous...much like Trudy's in Austin - all you need is two.

theres a good reason why most of the people who have reviewed on here have mentioned the steak nachos. i had been hearing about them for many months and finally made my first visit to try these hyped up nachos. i can, without a doubt, safely say, they are one of the greatest things i have ever eaten. the scene is a restaurant with a bar, who cares if the crowd is B & T, this isn't high school, get over yourself yuppie putz. you may be able to find mexican food for half the price, but who wants to eat taco bell as a regular dinner?

Pros: steak nachos, margaritas, steak nachos

A favorite happy hour spot for my coworkers and I when the warm weather rolls around. The rule... don't even attempt more than two margaritas and two is pushing it! My favorite place for tex-mex food!

Had an awful experience here. You can find much better mexican for half the price. Beware: This is big time B & T.

Cons: Food, Service, B & T crowd, decor

The food here is soso but its a great place to go for drinks after work - For some reason, this place always has flies around the bar area which bothers me a bit but during the warmer months the outdoor space is bumping - Margaritas arent bad and creep up on you -- my girlfriend likes the chips and salsa

This is by far one of my favorite mexican food spots in Manhattan. I am from Texas (land of Tex-Mex), and I haven't found chile con queso this authentic anywhere else in the city. The frozen margaritas are really delicious and strong with many flavors to choose from, the tortillas are homeade, the steak is tender and julicy and the guac is to die for. The service is decent and the prices are reasonable.

Was sitting outside when I saw mickies chasing each other under the tables. They were running all over the place. That alone was enough for me to get the hell outta there. I know this is NY, but to see them in plain sight, outside the subway tunnel, was enough to nix my appetite. How do you report this place?

The margaritas were served in a plastic cup and no one gave a damn about salt or no salt. Food was average, who knows if it's been blessed by the mickies. The waiter did not come to check on us. We had to walk through the kitchen and get to the bathroom, and was "greeted" by the entire male staff. WTF???

Will not return, ever.

So my friend was moving to Miami and we decided on lunch there. We all order different meals and they were all very good. The Carnitas were tender and the sauce was delicious. But The Fajitas I had were to die for. Perfectly flavored, and the meat just fell apart in my mouth. The tortillas were warm and soft. And the Strawberry Margarita I had was creamy and super strong but it was very good. The only bad thing is the waiter kept forgetting stuff we asked him to bring. But coupled with the atmosphere and food, it wasn't a big deal.

I booked a dinner at Rio Grande to meet two friends last Wednesday at 7pm. FIRST THING I NOTICED was how busy the bar areas were. The bars (there are two) were PACKED with happy hour revelers. There are two (yes, also two) dinning rooms. The square sided tables in both dinning rooms were crammed right on top of each other where the corner of one table was nearly touching the one next to it. The whole dinning room looked like a huge checkerboard. I was so glad I made the reservation for 4 knowing that there would only be 3 of us. The outdoor seating was open, but too cold that night to eat out there. It did look lovely, though. AS YOU HAVE READ in some of the other reviews, the floor manager was weird. He was just ?one of those guys? that within two seconds of the conversation, you knew he shouldn?t be working in customer service. I?ll put it to you this way; I always appreciate it when a restaurant manager decides NOT to wear his dirty cargo pants and an army jacket at work. But really, it had not impact on my night at all. As for the rest of the staff, they were efficient, very busy and oblivious enough to interrupt almost every conversion we were in the middle of. But they still have to do their jobs--I understand. THE FOOD WAS the most inconsistent thing about the whole meal. The appetizers were great. We had a couple other small dishes & the guacamole which is every bit as good as Rosa for less money. The main courses were another story. Stay away from the quesadillas! The tortillas were soft a mushy, the filling bland and boring. Every table that ordered quesadillas (you can?t help but notice) didn't like them. We also ordered a salad with grilled shrimp, and that was very good. I only got a sip of the drinks and they both tasted good. I don?t know if they were overpriced because I don?t regularly order margaritas. THE BILL CAME TO $100 plus tip for the three of us & we were there for about 2 and a half hours. Always add one to the reservation!

Pros: Fair meal at reasonable cost, good location, outdoor seating, you can listen in on other tables

Cons: Entrees are only "so-so," too many tables packed in to the space

Went to Rio Grand last night and it was packed due to the fact it was the first nice day of the year. I was ok with this, however our waiter had a bad attitude and was bitter that he had to work on a nice day and actually serve people. The food was not good, its hard to mess up nachos and guac. We had ordered shots of patron, and they were $14 a shot. I am ok with paying that when i am out at night at a nice bar or lounge, or a club. But not at a joke of a place like this. They weren't even large shots. I actually liked this place before last night. I will probably never be back. The margaritas were good but thats about it.

This place represents the very finest in Tex-Mex. I prefer going in the winter on an off night when it is much less crowded. Usually reservations are not necessary.
It is an upscale place that has good ambiance for a date as well as a low noise level for a business meeting. The margaritas are awesome and service is impeccable.
I highly recommend the sliced steak nachos, cooked to order! --E

The Orange ones ROCK!! Did i mention that they were super strong?? The food was good and well priced. I ordered the Steak Burrito which was really good. My friend got the swordfish tacos which he raved about! DEF TRY IT OUT!!

I have been to Rio Grande countless times and never experienced what I did last Friday. I took our summer interns there for food and drinks. It was beautiful out so of course we wanted a table outside and trust me there were plenty. We were a larger party ( 8 or so). It took the doorman almost 15 minutes to count how many people we had and figur eout where to seat us. There was an open table staring at us and i had to point it out several times. The girls at teh table next to useven volunteered to give us there table and they would move over one. When we sit down not one waiter comes over to us for a good 10 minutes. So... i decided to go inside to get my drink. One of our interns who is 21 goes to the inside bar where he proceeds to get hassled. Furthermore, a sassy mexican waiter comes to our tables and asks if we are ready to order. We say no bc we only have 4 menus and he hasn't even asked us for our drink order. He throws his hands in the air and darts off to the bouncer. The bouncer proceeds to get tells us that we must eat if e want to sit outside. I realized speaking with him would make me blue in teh face bc he is not the sharpest caryon in the box. I had to walk away bc he was soo supid. When I was inside the manager approached me. After me telling my story he asks me if i have ever eaten in NY before. He was soo rude to me, i heard another patrons say where is the customer service here. ... TRUST ME YOUR NOT MISSING OUT! It's overpriced and everyone there is really very unpleasant.

Pros: Outside space

Cons: They have no idea how to run a place

Went here last night, still slightly hung over, pardon the gramaticals, etc. Anyways, a friend of mine was throwing a little shin-dig there and we arrived and were greeted by a pretty nice bouncer. The place was f-ing packed, i felt like I was at a concert, sans the music, and hipsters. A lot of people were there before taking the boat back to jersey (you know what I mean), some cute girls, mostly people in groups. The drinks were all served in plastic cups, after pleading with the bartender to give a me glass, he still wouldnt, damn. Beer bottles were served in the alluminum bottles (think yankee stadium). All in all, the plastic cups said it all... before I even got a drink, that this place was one big frat party.... w/o pong, flip cup, music, etc. The margaritas were pretty good, very strong, and the service was decent. I woulnd't come back voluntarily, but you never know. A good place to go with a group of dudes to try to pick up some cuties (maybe...).

If you want a good margarita check this place out. They have outdoor seating (although I think you need to order food). Plenty of seating inside. I'm not a mexican food fan so I can't comment on the food. It's a spacious place, service is good.

I've been going to El Rio for about 4 years now and it never gets old. The margaritas are always on the money, strong but not overpowered by the taste of tequila. If you plan on going you have to get an order of their Steak Nachos. They use nice big pieces of steak and the nachos are done individually so it's not a big mound of stuff thrown together like some places. Never had a complaint of this place. Most recently went with a large group of about 14 people during the week and the service was great. For Margaritas i would recommend the Bloood Orange

The food is terrible, but if you stick to the bar and just have apps you'll be fine. The drinks are the strongest I've ever had, but they don't tase like a good margarita should. Be careful because more than 2 could get you into trouble! In the summer the outside space is great if you can stand the huge crowds and long waits at the bar, get there early to really enjoy the space.

El Rio Grande is great for happy hour when the weather is nice... they have a nice patio area. The space inside is large as well, however the bar area can get cramped. Whether you hanging out on the "Texas" or "Mexico" side of the restaurant, they both have one thing in common... STRONG drinks. The margaritas are great! Food is decent as well. Overall this place is a good time.

The Mexican food here is good although I have had better. Food comes in huge portions so men, you will not be left hungry. Prices are decent. The high ceilings make for a nice dining space. The part that was most enjoyable? The warm tortilla chips, guacamole and spicy salsa you get at the beginning of the meal in place of bread. I've heard a lot of good things about the happy hour and Margaritas here but, have never actually had. During the summer it looks like a great area to have drinks outdoors.

This is a great place, perfect happy hour spot during warm weather with it's outside patio and great mexican food. However, their margaritas, although tasty, could be the strongest in the city. Have two, and you'll have stories that you couldn't remember onyour own. Godd times!

Not only do they have a real dead buffalo hanging from the ceiling (what more could you really want after that?) but they have a slew of different margarita flavors and 2 sizes for the lethal drinks, which is great for the tequila-shy. If you go for drinks with work buddies, definitely DEFINITELY order a couple of steak nachos. The meat is tender, juicy and charbroiled. You won't regret it!

Appallingly bad service and food; they substituted romaine lettuce for spinach on the mushroom/spinach quesidilla; when brought to thr manager's attenetion - he said "we do that - half and half - you bit into the wrong half".

One of my most favorite places in the city... Always a good time from dinner with the folks to a start of a big night out. Margaritas are cheap and strong so the perfect place to begin the night and keep your expenses low. Not the greatest for date or nice atmophere... its the prefect place to go with a few friends or family and eat cheap great mexican food where you can relax and just have a good time. Happy Hour is great as well when its nice out because there is a big open area outside.

This has become, by far, my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city. Starting with the free chips and medley of salsas and guacamole, the rest of the menu is strictly great mexican. As I continue my quest for the perfect mole sauce, El Rio comes in at the top of my list with the perfect sweetness and spice.
The margaritas are a reason to come in itself. Order them frozen or on rocks, they know how to make a good one.
Reasonably priced and a great atmosphere for a good time or a small party.

The Margaritas at El Rio Grande can easily put you on the floor, but in a good way. The space lends itself to having a good time, which is unavoidable after the first drink. No kidding, one margarita is enough to make you tipsy, two puts you well on your way and three may bring out some sort of good time personality in yourself that you didnt even know existed! Either way, it is a fun experience. I have never consistently seen so many of my friends have such a great time on such a regular basis. This is a place that I recommend to anyone. Just make sure that you dont have anything important to do the following day. What do the bartenders put in those things, anyway????

My friends and I have been coming here for years. The reason: GREAT MARGARITAS AND GREAT FOOD. You will not find better or stronger frozen margs than here. The food is amazing and has a health-ish kick to mexican. You can finf broccoli and zuchini in your burrito that add this refreshing zing to it. Reccomended to share the burrito because it is HUGE! Even after sahring you are over-stuffed. I do admit it gets extremely crowded but that's a good thing. Means the food drinks service and ambiance are great or else we wouldn't keep coming back. The staff is extremely attentive and friendly. Definitely a place to start off the night.

went here for just drinks after work midweek and sat outside. place was packed. drinks were really weak and everything comes in plastic solo cups - even wine and martinis - for some reason its just not the same. i actually had to send back a mixed drink because it was all mix and no alcohol - i never ever do that. staff was rude and slow. waiter would bring out your beer in the bottle but then the bouncer would yell at you for having a bottle outside. very cheesy crowd - everyone looks very B&T. one stall in the only girls bathroom - just imagine the line.

I've been going to the Mexican side of Rio Grande for almost six years. I've never been disappointed with the food, the drinks, or the service. When I first moved out to NYC from LA, I was desperate for a Tex-Mex type place and Rio Grand really fit the bill. They have fantastic nachos, good chips and salsa, and wonderful entrees. I always get the sopapillas for dessert.

The place, (especially the Texas side), gets really crowded on Thurday nights and weekends. You will probably need a reservation during those times, but if you are dropping in in the early evening, or some afternoon, the place is nearly deserted and has an almost Zen-like ambiance. They have a pretty good brunch at well.

This is a good place for small groups 6-8 people. Larger than that and you are really cramped and it is difficult to hear each other talk.

I've been going to the Mexican side of Rio Grande for almost six years. I've never been disappointed with the food, the drinks, or the service. Pros: good food, reasonable prices

.

These people crammed tables in here and it's so tight you can barely move around from table to table. I was knockin arms left and right with the people eating at our table. Waiters bumping me in the back walking by.

Take out some tables. Food was bland with no spice, but the margaritas are good and strong.

Never one to turn down a challenge when it comes to beverage consumption, I met up with friends at The Big River and promptly learned the margarita hype was on the level -- they'll floor you and they're great! The food is good, but nothing tremendous, although it's tough to resist the terrific free chips and salsa. But whatever, that's not why you go to El Rio. At the new location (on 52nd + 8th or thereabouts), they played host to a bumpin' birthday bash for a friend, and were open to any suggestions to spice up the night. The margaritas were just as tasty, but not quite as strong. I advise you visit the original location on 38th, but either spot is a can't-miss type of place.

Pros: Margaritas, Chips 'n' salsa, Atmosphere

.

$7 margaritas guaranteed to do the trick. Free chips with very tasty cilantro-y salsa as well as guacamole salsa. I ordered the cheese enchiladas. I think they were good but after two margaritas ... I admit it's kinda up in the air. My friend got the chicken chimichangas. He enjoyed but then he also had the tasty ... and toxic margaritas.

Good ambience for a Mexican place.

We spent A LOT of $$$ on drinks while waiting for our table and an hour later they said we would have to wait another hour (after they talked about us as if we weren't standing there)
I will NEVER go back there

El Rio Grande has very inconsiderate bartenders that treated us very poorly. I would never recommend this place, and I will never go back.

I have been going to El Rio for well over ten years and I love this place. The frozen margaritas are excellent and strong. The green tomatilla sauce that is offered free at the table is DELICIOUS and not offered at any other Mexican restaurant I know of in NY. I always get and share the steak nachos and the stuffed jalapenos (stuffed with big shrimp and jack cheese) . .delicious classics. Don't forget to jazz up your steak nachos with the relish tray. Then for dinner I like the biztec mexicano medium rare. Wrap it up in one of their delicious flour tortillas and you are in business. If you can stand it, finish up your meal with the banana pinata. Mmmm. I hope they never change a thing and stay around for at least another 10 years.

The steak nachos are the most pleasant way to start off any meal. Follow those up with a couple 'ritas and you will be singing and dancing yourself down 3rd Ave.

Excellent bartender mixed scrumptious margaritas. Interesting bison with wings suspended from the ceiling. To give the drinks a fair chance I had one mango (delicious but a little sweet for me) followed by two strawberries (JUST RIGHT!) - we also had chips and wings at the bar. Perfect blend of well prepared frozen margaritas and great service.

Pros: Fabulous bartender, Great drinks

I was told that Rio Grande had the strongest Margaritas anywhere and I did not believe it. I learned very quickly (after one) not to doubt the rumors. They are the strongest, best tasting Margaritas in New York City by far!! Be careful, they sneak up on you!!

Pros: Out door seating

The Quesediallas here were great, but probably tasted a lot better considering I was sloshed after swigging down two of their famous Margaritas. Look out though, they're great drinks, but ther bill creeps up on you and you'll find yourslef drunkenly convincing your friends to cover your tab. Good bar scene, the waiters left much to be desired.

Pros: Margaritas, Food, Cool Bar scene

Cons: Waiter, The Bill

great Mexican. You can make your own spicy salsa, and they ask how you want your meat cooked as opposed to the other mexican places that give everyone the "same steak burritos". Nice chill atmosphere, the short wait is enough for a cocktail and the food is worth the wait. Only negative...the wait staff seemed to be in a rush to clear our table. Overall, best Mexican rest. in the city

Well-deserved reputation for the strongest Margaritas on the planet. After three, I couldn't write. Never tried to food, but it's a good place to tie one on before heading out.

Had reservations yet waited to be seated for over half an hour, so don't even bother with making a reservation. The service was slow, yet the amazing margaritas make it somewhat worth it. The prices are decent. I recommend starting with the steak nachos with jack cheese.

We waited over an hour for a table after being told it would take 30 minutes. If the host would have made a better effort to reset tables after people left, the wait time would have been much shorter. The staff here needs to get a clue. Better yet, the person who manages this place needs to put a little more thought into new hires. In NYC, service can make or break a restaurant. Yes, we NY'ers like good food and ambience, but we are much more likely to return to a place that treats us well......regardless of the other criteria people look for.

I went for a work function with about twenty people and we were treated extremely rudely by the staff including the hostess and the waiters. The hostess was unaccomodating even though we were obviously going to spend a lot of money. The food was decent, I had the skirt steak. Not bad. The drinks are a different story. I don't know if there was a communication problem but my friend and I ordered mojitos and the waiter came back with some frozen drink with anise in it. He insisted that it was a mojito and when we argued that mojitos contain mint leaves he very rudely snapped that we were wrong. I will never go back there...

This place is great if you are looking for strong margaritas and awesome queso. Not too many places have this Texas delicacy. As for the rest of the food, it is fair. And so is the service. Don't go there if you are in a hurry. But worth the trip.

Had dinner at the bar. At the bartender's suggestion, I had the shrimp fajitas (he said the shrimp dishes were the best). Chased it with two margaritas. All the previous reviews were right: the food is great, and the drinks are powerful. I will definitely be returning. Would've liked to have slightly larger portions.

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK AND PLAN TO HAVE A WHEELCHAIR WAITING FOR YOU UPON EXIT. Although Rio has lost some of the wild abandon from its double-patio-bars of yesteryear ... You are likely to find a decent amount of talent - both male and female - milling about on the 38th Street side. Battle your way to key bar space along the Big Buffalo-supervised Margarita Mile and consider pausing for reflection after Rita #2. If you need to use the bathroom, try to plan ahead, as you will often need to step over girls who haven't been pre-warned about the suspiciously strong cocktails.
