Caution: I went to Chat n Chew in September, and my foot was practically EATEN ALIVE by pests! Right after my friends and I were done with dinner, we saw a big roach crawl up one of the columns. We tried not to freak out and quickly left.

In a low-ceilinged Christmas-lighted throwback of a diner, the ??other? Union Square caf is a cute place, serving "T.V. Dinners," mom's meatloaf and bubbling mac and cheese. The tight, 4-seat bar is equally boggling, though with a long $8 specialty cocktail list (try the white peach sangria--kin to the Long Island iced tea), and super thick Hagen-Dazs milkshakes at six bucks apiece, the place oozes with charm and a viable alternative to neighborhood's trendy eats. Head to the spacious backroom for a cooler space, more privacy and ornate signage from yesteryear.

Chat N' Chew has all of the comfort foods you love. I usually get the sweet potato fries and mac and cheese. Great place to go for an inexpensive good meal. Cool, casual decor. Great service.

Generally an enjoyable experience...pretty friendly place "American portions "(ginormous)
The huevos rancheros is good...
Watch out for weekends..too many rugrats in strollers with permissive parents who seem to think bad behavior is cute...

The Food is decent but the Waitresses rush you out the Restaurant. My Friend and I ordered one appetizer and two entrees. We weren't even halfway done with the appetizer when our entrees arrived. Before we were even done with our entrees, the Busboy had come over at least three times to take our plates. Waitress was unfriendly and had a scowl on her face the entire time (like she'd rather be getting a root canal). From sitting down and ordering to paying the check was a total of 35 minutes. Completely ridiculous!!! Quite an unpleasant dining experience!! I will not be returning any time soon.

This is one of my favorite places to grab a meal in NYC. The food is completely comfort food, the setting feels like you're in your best friend's mom's home! Tons of knick-nacks everywhere! Sometimes there is a wait but it's absolutely worth it. Don't go without trying the macaroni and cheese, it's homemade but better!

Delicious food, fabulous music and a casual, friendly atmosphere made for a terrific birthday dinner at Chat'N"Chew .My friend, boyfriend and I started the night with a round of margaritas and two appetizers:the onion ribbons and macaroni and cheese. The onion ribbons were addictive and the mac and cheese was just as tasty as my friend Carolyn described. For dinner I enjoyed the bit with sweet potato fries while my boyfriend ordered the TV dinner, which was presented in a ceramic TV tray-very kitchy and kute.I couldn't stop picking at the green bean casserole on his plate .And although we were stuffed,we had to peruse the dessert menu, having heard their cakes and pies were not to be missed. After much deliberation,we all decided to share a slice of Vesuvious and a slice of apple crumb pie-a la mode of course.I don't know which I enjoyed more-the savory dinner or rich ,sweet desserts. However, what is perhaps equally important to me is prompt and friendly service. Our server tended to all our requests with haste and good humor, which has been consistent each sunsequent time i have visited.Satisfied w/such a marvelous experience has me pointing everyone i know in the direction of Chat'n Chew.

I love this place! The food is delicious and perfect for the chilly weather, the ambience is character filled and charming and the servers are great! They are friendly, fun, and entertaining. The prices are excellent, especially for the portions and how delicious the food is. I have tried and loved uncle red's addicition, the delicious mac and cheese, the holy cow burger and the veggoe chili (my favorite). By far one of the best finds for cheap eats and friendly service in NYC. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel like they're at a home away from home!

went back last Saturday night with a group of friends; everyone loved it, the pork chops; Uncle Red's addiction (honey fried chicken) the tiny Mac n Cheese and the sweet potato fries and the fried oysters (all recommended); and we took a lot of it home; just too much! great value. down home atmosphere. Sit up front for more prompt service. But overall a fun and tasty time had by all.

We went there today, a party of 4, each ordered something else and none of us particularly cared for their meal. Granted we didn't try the mac & cheese (supposedly that's their "specialty", possibly the only good item on the menu), but we all thought our meals were average-below average. Nothing to write home about. For the life of me I don't get the rave reviews on this site. Sure, this place has character, it's been around for who-knows how long (and accordingly dirty, really), but character alone doesn't maketh a good meal. If you're a starving NYU student who just wants some cheap, crappy, "comfort food" at a late hour, this place is for you. Otherwise, there are better options out there.

The Wait staff is very rude...They crowd around like high school kids and gossip. The food is greasy. I do not recommend. I am not sure how they stay in business with such poor customer service. Management needs to wake up and address their customer's complaints. Spend your money elsewhere.

Been going here for years, feels like a short trip to the country every time. Love the pork chops, mashed potatos; Thanksgiving on a roll, flame grilled burgers and sweet potato fries with chipotle ketchup and chocolate coca-cola cake. Brunch is also great but always a long line. Small bar. not a late night place. sometimes slow service, but fun atmosphere. kid friendly. the chicken fried steak TV dinner looked great but was disappointing. Overall, highly recommend if you are not in a hurry. Also, large portions, no hassle to share.

I last went there a while back with my colleagues. The place is cramped, stuffy and unhealthy inside. Recently they have some outside sitting area in a street that is not particularly appealing.

Anyhow, the food is at best average and unhealthy as hell. The star attraction used to be the white blond waitresses who would give you extra attention if you are a cool white dude and will definitely give you attitude if you have any other appearance. It is very strange to experience this in NY city. I would not be surprised to see that in Georgia or Oklahoma or Ohio.

Therefore, if you are a like-minded white guy, entertain yourself there without any expectation on the food menu. For others, please find another place to save your sanity. They are a shame in our country.

I've eaten here many times. Sometimes the experience is great, sometimes it's embarrassing. The food tastes great (though sometimes it takes forever), the waiters are fun (the ones who speak English at least), but the place must be owned and managed by morons. In the summer the place is like a sauna, God forbid they shut the front doors so the place can cool down. But if you're in the mood to watch the owner come in and insult the staff in front of customers, making the environment quite uncomfortable for everyone, this is the place to go. Or if you really want a good show, sit next to the kitchen and watch the manager tell them to stop making someone's food, then watch the waitress freak out when her customers start to yell at her 20 minutes later. Real professional. Or if you are waiting at the bar, the manager will try to sell you an Ipod. A very interesting environment. But hey, it's still a great turkey burger!

Good comfort food. Friendly staff. But they NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE. Delivery is painfully inconsistent. Sometimes it shows up great, sometimes its soggy. Sometimes quick, sometimes way too long. It's too bad. I say go in person but save yourself the headache of trying to get it delivered.

We went here for a goodbye dinner the night before we left NYC. It was the perfect place for such an occasion! The atmosphere was super fun and kitschy and the staff was very upbeat and friendly. We were seated quickly - but by the bathroom . . . even though there were a bunch of seats. I ordered the white wine sangria and it was ok, not really worth the price. If I went back I would definitely order the TV Dinner! It had huge portions and everything was delicious. The other entrees were the steak sandwich (delicious!), the catfish sandwich (very good!), and the thanksgiving dinner sandwich (great stuffing, very tasty!). The pies were very good! Pecan especially - which came highly recommended by our waitress. If you're looking for a fun place with solid food, I would definitely suggest chat 'n' chew!

we went on a friday afternoon. It wasn't crowded, so we got seated right away. Our waitress was extremely nice and sweet. The food was good, not great, but good down and dirty no fuss kind of food. I would say go there for some casual comfort food and hang out with some good friends. Tried the mac n' cheese, it was okay. But then again, I have never been a big mac n' cheese fan anyway.

I'll start by saying that the food was good. The macaroni and cheese was really tasty. My fish tacos were good - I'm still trying to find really good fish tacos in NYC. I also had a side of south of the border beans and rice. The beans were like a vegetarian chili and were great. However, I have to mention the layer of dust on the ledge around the wall and the dirty, wet mop string that was stuck to my beer bottle when it was delivered to my table. That's just gross. If the beer had been in a glass I would have gotten up and left at that point. I'm glad I stayed for the food but they could do a little better on the cleaning.

This place has a good menu, seems cozy and like a good value. The food tasted good, but I was a little afraid to eat some of it. I had the turkey dinner and they must have made my plate way before the other orders at my table were finished because the edges of the turkey were crispy, as if left under a hot lamp and there was a skin that formed on the gravy (like pudding). Having said that it seemed old and under a hot lamp, oddly enough, the vegetables were undercooked and cold. I should have told the waitress, but I was starving and we were under a time constraint, so I ate the parts that looked safe. I'll give it one more try in the future.

Like some other reviewers have pointed out, the mac n cheese is pretty tasty, but I've had the other dishes, like the meatloaf, burger, and fish tacos and they're ok. I do like their chocolate milkshake a lot. I come here again and again mainly for the non-NY atmosphere. It makes me forget that I'm in the city for awhile, especially when you sit in the back.

You can't really go wrong if you are meeting someone for dinner in Union Square. The mac-n-cheese is as good as advertised. YUMMY! The other dishes are average. I've been here multiple times because it's easy to catch up with friends over some comfort food. The other outstanding dish is the pecan pie ala mode. mmmmm....delicious.

this place is open late and near my school. their food isn't too pricey and the service is pretty decent. they make amazing milk shakes with haagan daaz ice cream, thick and creamy and tastey! i always get the holy cow, they make great burgers, and the boss's special a great steak sandwhich. though it gets crowded fast, and kids are noisey it's pretty good among the college crowd.

I discovered Chat N'Chew when I first moved here, and completely fell in love with it. Sadly, I can't remember why now. Their food has grown consistently worse and worse. I don't know why I continued to eat there, when each consecutive visit was worse and worse. The last time I ate there was the last straw. The country fried steak was inedible, the meatloaf was cold, and the vegetables didnt even taste like veggies, just greasiness. It was absolutely disgusting and I also found an unidentifiable foreign object in my food. I guess they have gotten lazy the more popular they have become. I strongly urge against it!!!

This place has the greatest macaroni and cheese around. They serve a generous portion of delicious sweet potato fries. Everything is mad on the spot. But be prepared to be served by waiters that seem to be easily distracted...too many tables...too little waiters. Since more people know about my favorite lil lunch spot, it's become another place with a very long wait.

I'll give you FIVE "C"s on why you should visit Chat n' Chew:

1.) Cheese (Grilled!) - The Grilled Cheese (with optional, but highly recommended bacon and tomato) is hands down one of the best I've ever had. Crispy, cheesy, and delicious. Get a salad with it to make yourself feel better after eating this artery clogger (I get mine with bacon).

2.) Cheese (with Mac!) - If you've never had Chat n' Chew's Macaroni and Cheese, clear your calendars tomorrow. Plan to be sitting in front of a hot, crispy, and most importantly, cheesy dish of Macaroni and Cheese at Chat n' Chew. Trust me, it'll be a much better hour and a half spent than going to...wherever you had to go. (FPC tip: Pimp it out by asking for some crumbled bacon (there it goes again), a couple dashes of tabasco, and some good ole' ketchup. Also, the appetizer portion is more than enough for a fix, and you can get something else! ahmagahd!).

3.) Consistency - Everytime I've come here (and y'all know how much I come here, don't you?), the above two dishes have ALWAYS been great. No let downs. No tears. (Not that I cry anyway...sometimes).

4.) Cravings - Yup. I crave Chat n' Chew sometimes. What exactly do I crave? Read #1 and #2 above.

5.) Cuartero - You'll find me here often enough. Find me and say, "Hi!". Then say, "Thank You!" when you've demolished your plate of Mac N' Cheese.

Comfortable decor. Lots of useless items about which I could care less.

It can get a little stuffy in there during the summer (the kitchen faces the front of the dining area), so get a seat in the back room where the a/c seems to work a lot better.

Service? Gets really busy, but the food still comes out in due time. The hungrier you are, the better #1 and #2 above taste.

Other notable dishes - The Kitchen Sink (salad), the Thanksgiving on a Roll (sandwich), and the TV Dinner (entree) are all great choices. Get a burger and sweet potato fries elsewhere.

Pros: Consistency and Comfort Food

Cons: Stuffiness during busy hours

Okay, so I had the urge for good ol' fashion homemade mac n cheese. And so decided to try this place. I went solo and it was a Friday night. As I made my way to the entrance and saw the Chat 'n' Chew sign, I knew that this would be a cheesy place. As I walked in, a waitress there came up to me and greeted me with a warm smile. I ordered a sassy sour and mac n cheese. It took a pretty long time for her to bring the drink back, which was a bit too strong to my preference. The mac n cheese, however, certainly did it for. It was definately the best mac n cheese I've ever tasted. And the outside was nice and crispy. Overall, I would definately recommend this place for large groups since the atmosphere is more of a family/festive gathering.

I have been to Chat 'n' Chew on two different occasions. Both times were somewhat disappointing. The good things about this place--the menu items are familiar, and the food is fresh. For example, the green bean casserole isn't the kind your aunt makes at Thanksgiving, it's fresh green beans with real onions, etc. However, the portions are small for the prices, and the food is average. The best place to get home cooking at GREAT prices is in the Alphabet City, Mama's, where you can get the most amazing home made food for 10 bucks. (Mama's is on 3rd street between Ave. A and Ave. B). Other than that Chat 'n' Chew's decor is a little cheesy, as if Disneyworld made a "Midwest-themed" restaurant. There are so many great restaurants in the Union Square area, don't waste your time or your money.

i came here yesterday night for dinner with 3 other people. my friend took a look at the menu and exclaimed, this is real food! and it is lots and lots of good old american comfort food served by very accommodating waitresses. i ordered the grilled catfish po boy (~$10) and substituted their normal massive mound of skin-on fries with an equal pile of sweet potato fries. both varieties of the shoestring fries were tasty. the catfish was simply seasoned and flaky. i also tried their grilled cheese sandwich (made with 3 kinds of cheese) with tomato & bacon (~$8). they didnt skimp on the thick-cut bacon and the bread was grilled crispy and buttery. another friend ordered the coca-cola cake (~$5), a surprisingly airy but very sweet chocolate cake made from coke syrup. bill came to about $55 for the 4 of us, which i thought was reasonable.

Cons: wait can be long, only 1 bathroom/sex

I brought my friend with me a couple of weeks ago and it was as good as I remembered from a decade ago. The ceiling is a little low and feels like someone's basement rec-room. The service was very attentive, perhaps a little too much so, and the catfish po'boy was tasty. My friend had the BLT and was shocked by the volume of bacon it contained- she had to remove some of it in order to eat the sandwich. We also ordered the onion strings, which were huge and had to have been cut from several onions. We had a lovely experience and would definitely go there again!

try it, it's not fancy, so don't expect it to be, it's just good down home cooking, a little taste of southern, but not too much, a little on the expensive side for what you get, but everything in that area is

This place was such a disappointment. I went here with 4 of my closest girlfriends and the food was HORRIBLE. American cuisine?? Try greasy cuisine!! They had nothing on the menu that we ordered because the kitchen "was having a rough night". The service was slow, the waitress spilled drinks and food on my friends more than once, and the fish was cold. You are better off staying home! I do not recommend this place. Even though it's cheap, it's still a waste of money.

I have a foggy memory of coming here about 10 years ago and liking it. Well I tried it again last night and it was a huge disapointment. First off the place is messy, with crumbs and spills everywhere. We sat near the sluggish, hot and very loud kitchen and the service area was not wiped down once during the entire time. The servers were friendly enough, but were also very unkempt looking. My chicken caesar had a watery dressing with very little flavor, soggy and burned croutons and wilted lettuce. The "medium rare" steak on the Wedge Salad was very tough and and closer to well done. The cocktails were all mixer. I don't know why we came here in the first place, but we are not coming back.

I was tickled that such a comfy cozy place was nestled near hustle bustle union square area. A nice break from the many uptight places. I thoroughly enjoyed my banana and pecan pancakes. Though the waitress had an overly cutsie personality, her service was commendable. The appeal of this place is comforting. If you have an open mind you will enjoy this restaraunt for what it is.

Will never go again. After being seated at a table right next to the cutlery station where our ears were blasted by the shrill sounds of metal clashing against metal, we changed tables on our own. This place is the kind of diner where management encourages serve-staff to be as rude and as flip as they want to customers because they think that adds to its 'cool' factor. The portions are huge, yes, but the fried chicken we had was edible purely because the sauce was alright. We left the mashed potatos and cooked vegetables untouched.

the service is forgetful but apologetic (which gets old fast)...but it's still worth it. Mainly for out of town visiters who aren't into that "foodie" food the rest of us love to exploe...this place offers a relaxed feel with lots of american food done well. The portions are big, but good also because they aren't cheap with the good ingredients--bacon, fries etc.

Chat N Chew is a place you walk into and cannot avoid the sheer New York Character. The servers are very friendly and personable. They also have the best Yam fries in New York City! It is common to have to wait for a table for about 15 minutes or so but its worth it.

PROS: Yam Fries
CONS: Sometimes it becomes very crowded

I've dined here for years and enjoyed delicious comfort food - burgers, awesome sweet potato or skin-on fries, desserts, etc. But last time we went, we had awful service at the bar from a fair weather bartender (all good - she was there & friendly, as our delay stretched on - she avoided eye contact with us like the plague). The computer system at the bar wasn't correctly sending orders to the kitchen so our food took over an hour to get to us. Saw the same computer-malfunction-delay happen to more than one takeout customer while waiting. The manager was defensive and cold (though he did agree to discount our food). Do yourself a favor and wait for a table when you go here at a peak mealtime. Or...go elsewhere.

Seeking a diner? This is the place. The Americana decor and comfort food make it fun for all ages. There's the mac ‘n' cheese with the crunchy top, the fried chicken with skin-on smashed potatoes, and a thick cookies and cream milkshake.…
