I have not had such unique and tasty Puerto Rican food like I did at this restaurant. It reminded me of my grandmothers food back in P.R. I love this place.

Stopped in for an early dinner after a business meeting. Was suspicious when the place was completely empty, but the menu looked good.

Turns out, the food was quite authentic and tasty. Pork roast tasted home made and portion was large. Special shrimp appetizer was delicious. Service was perfect (we were the only diners there at first...)

Unfortunately this restaurant has fallen into the practice of automatically adding a tip to the bill. I was surprised, especially since we were only a party of 2. We were assessed 15%, to which I added a few dollars... but I don't care for this practice and suspect it is illegal. It was not noted on the menu or any sign I could see.

Otherwise, the food and service were quite good, prices were reasonable, and I would return there.

peace

i had no idea how hard it was to find a good puerto rican restaurant! the parking is non-existent, so I don't recommend driving...but WOW was this place worth it.
I had the pastele, my older daughter ordered the shrimp asada (it was a soupy kind of shrimp with broth) and the younger daughter ordered bistec y sebolla (steak and onions) which as very flavorful, although not the best cut of meat, if you're picky about stuff like that...however, it was very good.
shrimp dish was amazing. perfectly seasoned with a hint of heat. the shrimps themselves werent as creamy smooth as I like it, but absolutely delicious.
my pastele? well, lets just say ... I've never, ever eaten pastele from anyone but my mom, these were absolutely delicious, perfect amount of pork and seasonings...my kids want to learn how to make them...the only drawback was there was only one pastelle served...not enough to share adequetly. rice was creamy soft and steaming hot, the beans had a similar bit of heat to them as described in the shrimp dish. My youngest daughter is IMPOSSSIBLE to please when ordering out. I thought she would order the chiken and white rice & leave 3/4 of it on her plate...well, this daughter of a Puerto Rican ate like a champ and fell asleep on my shoulder afterwards with a heavy sigh said," mommie, that was delicious, thank you" what better endorsement? service was grand, and the men are flirty in a very respectful way...they fussed over everyone. I had a beer with supper & the bill came to under 50 bux. hello!! I really love this place and can't wait to go back. it's worth the trip from Long Beach

Old San Juan is a great Mexican restaurant and it has great food selections, especially appetizers. The prices are reasonable but the restaurant is always packed, so make sure you plan ahead if you plan on going here.

I love this place - my husband and I try to dine here without the children. They have the best shrimp stuffed plantains - and everything we have ever ordered has been fabulous. The service is so friendly and attentive and you leave full and happy - and tipsy if you enjoy Sangria!

For 10 years, my family went to OSJ because the food was very close to authentic PR cuisine on the West Side in a "titere-free" restaurant. Last 2 times we went there the food was tasteless and the service was horrible. I felt like we were bothering the staff and believe it or not, the tables seemed even smaller than usual giving us no room. It felt like a lunchonette/diner rather than a restaurant. Dissapointing, but Deportivo is not much better. The place to eat PR food in the city in a nice restaurant right now has to be Sofrito on the East Side. The downside to Sofirto is that they do not currently accept reservations for small parties. We will not return to OSJ.

I stepped in here on Saturday night. First, the place was packed, eventually they sat us. The drinks came quick which was suprising. I ordered the chicken, rice and red beans. It was excellent. I don't usually eat spanish food but this was great. The prices are phenominal as well. i will definitely keep coming back for some good spanish cooking.

I am so surprised at the bad reports. I have been there twice. Had the snapper, tostones, pastelli's and the best margarita ever. I am Greek and PR and know what good PR food is. It may not be as good as my ex mother in laws food but very good.

Many years ago, in this same location, was a Cuban/Chinese restaurant where, on many occasions, I would order pork chops and yellow rice. It was the dish that made me fall in love with Latin food. On a return trip to the old neighborhood, I noted the old place was no longer there, but replaced with Old San Juan and I decided to give it a try. My hubby ordered an empenada for an appy and we were so happy with the taste we could hardly wait for our entrees. My husband's Chicharon de Pollo was nothing more than glorified Chicken McNuggets and my pork chops (grilled not fried like real PR chops) were pink on the inside - which I didn't notice until I'd eaten half of one chop. I showed it to the waiter, he looked at me then asked if I wanted them cooked more. I said I didn't because I lost my appetite. From then on there was absolutely no contact - eye or otherwise- from the staff. The probable owners - two fellas that looked very alike - carried on going back and forth, but could care less about their customer's satisfaction. Besides that experience, the food just was not tasty at all. Don't waste your time.

My boss (who happens to be Irish)recommended this eye sore to me so I decided to take my wife there for Valentines Day dinner and a broadway play at 8pm. We arrived an were seated at 6pm where the waiter promptly took our drink order. We ordered a half pitcher of sangria that tasted like cheap red wine with chunks of apples. It took 20 for the lazy waiter to return to take our entree order and 40 minutes later we decided to leave. I would not recommend this hole-in-the wall to my worst enemy.

Old San Juan has the best authentic Puerto Rican food. The churrasquito steak, shrimp mofongo and empanadas are full of flavors, just like my grandmas (abuela) home cooking. You will never leave hungry. I always bring my friends to enjoy not only the great meals, but also excellent sangria and wonderful music. Every time we go there we have a fun time. I can't wait go back!!!

I've been to Old San Juan before but this time i found it to be exceptional.!!!I I found out there are new owners who are redecorating the place and changing the menu around. I must say the food is much better quality than before. I had the salmon and paella which was amazing!!! The owner seems to be a very nice man and he told me they're planning on making adjustments to the menu very soon. It's a very pleasant atmosphere; I'll definitely be going back to Old San Juan again to get a taste of the foods on the new menu. If you're looking for good argentinian food, Old San Juan is a must!!!

I come to this restaurant often. No where can you match both the service and the food. Portions are large, food is amazing. The churrasco is tender and delicious. And no where else in the NYC area can I find mofongo de camarones done so well. I cannot recommed this place more!

went to old san juan on a friday night. the atmosphere is not romantic as it suggests, the service is average, the food sucked. we did get a lot of food, but the food was not good.

arroz y pollo (chicken and rice) - bone chicken, not cooked fully, no flavor in rice.
chicken and garlic sauce - fried chicken in butter sauce.

the only item that was some what decent was black beans.

not recommended

After reading some great reviews for this restaurant I was excited to try this place. I went with a friend on a weekend early afternoon. We waited for our food as many of the other tables around us were served, most of which came in after we did. When we asked the waiter what the holdup was, he told us it would be out in just a few more minutes. After waiting another 30 minutes, we got our check and left hungary. Total time waiting for our food over one hour. I was shocked to have gotten no apology from the management, and to top it off were charged for the drinks we had while patiently waiting for food that never arrived. If you want to go spend an hour and never get served go to this place.

This is where Puerto Rican co-workers took me for lunch...and what a place! The place looks old and well-worn, but in a good way. The service is somewhat slow, but that feels sort of authentic also? And the food...wow. I really recommend the chicken and rice. My absolute favorite dish.

Finding this gem was lucky. It's hard to find good Puerto Rican food that's not from a cuchifrito, or some small mom and pop shop. Harder still is to find a Mofongo that's not dry.

Old San Juan gives me the delicious Puerto Rican food made just as I was in the island. Add to the fact that the restaurant is a restaurant with impeccable service. 1/2 the menu is Argentinian and they have a wonderful selection there too.

Service is impeccable as the waiter held out my chair for me and was on top of our every need.

I cannot recommend this place enough.
