Really?! What asian restaurant don't know how to cook rice? And $14 for a small plate of Cold Sesame noodles; it wasn't even that extraordinary. Maybe it's the location, caucasian patrons, but this place was overpriced, undercooked,

This place offered the worst service that I've ever had in my entire life. They were rude and acted like they were doing us a favor waiting on us. We never leave without tipping but this place was the worst ever. If you're paying money to go out you expect to be treated like a customer not someone that is a bother to the restaurant. I hope they go under during these difficult economic times. DON'T GO TO SHUN LEE!!!!

Long a favorite of the Lincoln Center crowd, Shun Lee West offers better than average Chinese fare in very nice surroundings. If you are going to a show after dinner, be sure to tell them, otherwise go when it is a little less hectic so you can enjoy the ambiance and the food in a more relaxed setting. Not cheap!

I am a native New Yorker and this place received rave reviews in Zagats so I gave it a try....I went with my girlfriend and this place is HORRIBLE. If you are a native NYer or tourist STAY AWAY. I ordered dumplings for appetizers and they were tasteless.....then for the main course I had brazed ribs....

I like my meat lean and asked the waiter if they were fatty and he said " Not at all." When they arrived they were disgusting, barely any meat...all fat and bone. I did not complain to the manager because I am NOT going back. In all honesty you are better off going to Chinatown where you will pay half as much and the food is a 1000x better !!!......and to add the prices are very expensive. Not worth it....if you are going to have high prices the food better be good.

Anyone who posts this place is great is lying. This place is good if you want to be a show-off to clients or friends but you will walk away disappointed.

For the first time in my life, I left a restaurant without leaving any tips! No matter how aweful the service was, I have always left 15% tips. This restaurant did NOT deserve any and I felt obligated not to tip. I told the water 3 times (as soon as we got there) that we had a performance to catch at Lincoln Center. The place is right around Lincoln center and their main customers are those who go to a performance at Lincoln center. They should know better! I have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and other restaurants, at least, do not let the customer wait for an hour and leave empty stomach in the end to catch a show. 50 minutes later, as we were about to walk out the restaurant angry, the waiter brought our food. We ordered peking duck for 2 and a glass of wine each which ended up paying $78. Well, what we got (after waiting for 50 minutes) was some burrito looking peking duck wraps (2 each) which had a small piece of cucumber and a tiny piece of scallion stuck in it. No extra cucumber/scallion pieces or sauce on the side. THAT for $50. And again, we called the waiter several times to order one single damn thing and the waiter yelled back, "It's coming!" I looked around and there were all those angry customers who were late for their performances too. Oh this couple sitting next to our table got their food finally and it was this ugly dish that looked as if a chef just dumped some left over food. And the food was not even in the center of the plate. As soon as they got their food, the old couple goes "what the hell is this?" Alas alas, anyway we had to eat this "burrito" in 3 minutes and ran to the opera. I came home with terrible stomach ache. The bottom line is DO NOT EVER GO especially before a show. And DO NOT EVER expect any good service (or even good food for that matter).

Being Chinese, we know what good Chinese food should taste like. My fiance and I frequent low key, no frills Chinatown restaurants for good Chinese food at value prices. I regrettably persuaded him to check out Shun Lee West because of it's cool decor and rave reviews. We were beyond disappointed... Whether it was the shoddy service, where it was obvious that better service was being provided to the non-Asian patrons, or the overpriced, COLD dim sum at $6.50 a dish (3 times Chinatown prices), or the ANT that crawled out of one of our dim sum steamers... we will NEVER go there again.

Stick to Chinatown if you want Chinese food, you get at least what you pay for, unlike here at Shun Lee West, where you get nothing more than poor service, cold dim sum, and unwanted guests at your table for 3-4 times the price you'd pay in c-town.

Don't waste your time or money. It started with the dirty glasses, forks and plates. (Chunks of sliced ginger in my water glass? How did that happen?) Next came the rude waiters (not just one!) who instead of fixing the problems that we kindly pointed out, gave us a lecture, brought the wrong appetizer, brought hot towels before we were all finished with our meal, and tried to take our dishes away before we finished our meal. By this point, our mediocre meal was ruined and tempers were flaring. A manager finally came and asked for OUR business card so that he could "make it right the next time". Well, there won't be a next time. (And by the way, this is NOT the way to fix a broken ship, Mr. Manager.) In addition to being overpriced and overrated, the combination of mediocre food and horrible service made this the most disagreeable dining experience we have had in New York City. Congratulations, Shun Lee West. You've achieved an all-time low in our books!

This place is so famous that I couldn't help checking it out while I was in New York. Customer service is awful. I waited a long time for the food and it wasn't even hot when I finally got it. What a waste of space. They should spend money on higher quality of food and staff instead of the decor. I wish I had saved the money of the meal for some souvenir.

Stopped in for dinner and was seated prompty. Wait staff was friendly and helpful which complimented the black/white decor. However this is all that was good about this restaurant. The appetizers were a joke, especially the Dim Sum at $6.50 a pop. Shrimp fried rice alone, with nothing else was 12.95 and my BBQ pork meal came with a baby cup of white rice. I would have been better off driving to one of the local chinese food restaurants in Brooklyn because including toll it would have been cheaper and much more tasty experience.

My wife and I dined at Shun Lee for lunch before going to a play at Lincoln Center on February 18, 2006. We were delighted to find such a great restaurant so nearby to the theater. The decor is black and white checked and is striking. The restaurant was quite crowded but the service was professional and prompt. My wife really liked the dim sum carts, which had about 30 different items ,and kept circulating around the room. She enjoyed the shrimp, which were HUGE! as well as the different kinds of dumplings. I enjoyed orange chicken. Though the portion wasn't overly large, it was enough for us to share . An assortment of pineapple, kumquats and lychee topped off a fine lunch. The prices were quite reasonable for such excellent quality . I will definitely eat here again if I have the opportunity.

Bad overall. Just went last night and couldn't be more dissapointed. the filet mignon would be better used as a hockey puck in a local street rollerblade game. I don't mind paying up for a good place but the lack of quailty in food, the cheese of the atmostphere, and the clueless service makes you feel like the biggest sucker on earth for sitting there in the first place. Spend wisely and go to someplace worthwhile...

I have never less this restuarnt wit anything but a loosened belt and big grin on my face...of course, the Mai Tai's help. The food is excellent, the service attentive and the atmosphere great! If you are looking to order by number, you should pass this one by. If you want a dining experience to write to Mom about, you're in luck!

Excellent quality of ingredients and decor. Too bad the portion sizes are in inverse proportion to the prices. It is like you are paying for the rent and the fancy digs and not for the food. All dishes are overpriced and most are bland. Too bad because the place is like a museum of fine Chinese artwork.

Service was rude and perfunctory. Waiters were not only unhelpful, my requests appeared to annoyed them. The spareribs were not only dry and tasteless, when the waiters could not separate them with tongs, they simply served them and walked away. I had to request a knife to sever them. I ordered a dish without red or green peppers, the dish?beef with leeks and hot peppers? was delivered with an abundance of red and green peppers. The waiter set down my companion's meal and didn't return with my dish for some time.

The quality of both the food and service has been in gradual decline. I won't be returning in the near future.

i'm dumbfounded that this restaurant and its chain was what i used to consider to be "the best". reputation can only go so far before loyal customers like myself begin questioning if i'm being robbed, and not so blindly. 6/13/03 was a night that i just should have put my money elsewhere because i was disappointed again. i guess this old dog needs to be taught over and over again before giving up on the once great chain. yes, the decor is a good one but its my stomach that shun lee really has to answer to, and its not saying much. lukewarm food, mediocre service but extremely upscaled prices is NOT in their best interest or mine, so i ask you: is shun lee really "beyond take out"?

For a Chinese food purist as myself, I find it hard to justify going anywhere else outside of Chinatown to get excellent Chinese food. However, my dining experience at Shun Lee has made me a convert. If you want to be treated like royalty, then this is the place. The waitstaff was very helpful and eager to please, and the food was excellent. From the decor to the food presentation, the whole place is a conversation piece. Great for entertaining.

Went there for my birthday. Got there early for a 9pm reservation and was seated right away. Restauarant staff extremely friendly & attentive, which is rare these days in the city.

Appetizers delicious, only wish they'd give more per serving. Main course delicious. And surprisingly the desert menu was good, got the chocalate mouse cake.

Will definitely go back again with a larger group. and the plus to the evening was dining next to Sara Jessica parker and hubby Matthew Broderick
