Pros: 35 % off after 8:30

We were drawn to Girasole on the strength of its 35% off policy for dining at 8:30pm or later, but once there, we were very impressed by the flavorful food, the bistro ambience and the good service. Its Italian fare is innovative in its mix of flavors and textures and it is also very reasonably priced. We will definitely be back.

Pros: Good prices, great flavors, good service

The food was very average. Centolire has far better pasta. The manager offered us a free glass of Muscato d"asti after dinner. We, of course, were thrilled until we tasted the flat wine he attempted to pawn off on us. Average service. Average ambience. Average food.

I don't use alcohol and it's my custom to order a large bottle of sparkling water and a burgundy glass. Last night, at Girasole, I took a sip and had just put my glass down when the owner came flying through the dining room, swooped down and grabbed my glass and started screaming at the waiter that this was a red wine glass.....not a water glass....and took it away. Screaming all the way to the back of the restaurant. The waiter told him that I'd requested that kind of glass and I shall not dignify his response. When I wrote my Zagat review of Girasole last night, I decided to read through the comments and saw that a huge number of Zagat participant/critics are taken by "the psychotic behavior", "the unpleasant behavior", this man's "gesticulating tantrums". Never before have I seen anything like it. We have been occasional clients of Girasole for 15 years or so and have noticed that this man occasionally yells at his staff. I chalked it off to a cultural thing. But last night was over the top and, of course, we'll never return. Surely, we can navigate two blocks further uptown to Nicola where they are extremely nice.

Do not be a one time, two time, three time, or four time neighborhood customer.
You will be treated rudely by the owner unless you order wine, an appetizer, an entree, and a desert with the added restriction that you occupy a table for one hour only; no matter the size of your party. The private functions are even more ridiculous in terms of cost, service, and timing. As a poorer wall street executive where is the respect?

Pros: Not Going Into The Restaurant

Cons: Service=Price=Value

Today I booked a business lunch for two at 1pm. The restaurant was empty and for a good reason. I asked the owner for a refill on my coffee, that I was having with my lunch, and he told me to ask the waiter(who was no where to be found),When I asked for a second refill with dessert the owner complained to me that "this was not a diner" .When I asked him "if he was joking?" he replied" no I was expecting too much for a $35 lunch", I was stunned and embarassed in front of my lunch guest. I really should have made a scene but instead I called him tonight, after the dinner crowd, to complain. He retorted"don't come back!"

I went there on Saturday night with my wife. The manager acted like he was annoyed from the minute we walked in, probably b/c the place was pretty empty. When he started loudly berating the busboy right in front of us, my wife told him that he was acting very unprofessional and he should lower his voice. He started arguing that he was acting very professional, at which point we decided to leave. While we're waiting for our coats, my wife started telling a fellow patron how rude the manager was to us, at which point he comes barreling up from the back of the restaurant telling her how she can't talk to his customers. She tells him she'll talk to whoever she wants to, at which point he tries to get in her face until I step in his way. He skulks to the back of the restaurant and sits there muttering under his breath and staring at us until I finally ask him what he keeps looking at. He yells across the restaurant that he doesn't need our business, I yell back that I think he does, and we turn around and leave. Unbelievable.

This would be a great place to visit regularly if was not for the manager.I have always made a reservation, but that does not make a difference. He portrays the place as a private club,so unless you are willing to visit quite often you will denied respectable service.I would think it would better in the current economy.

One of, if not my number one, favorite place! The food is top notch, the place is very cool, the service is great, and it just feels right for a special occasion or just stopping in on a Friday night. It is a bit pricey, but for the experience you get, well worth it. I have been here several times and have always been very happy.

Went several times a month, held three private parties upstairs. Came one night without a reservation and received the manager's rath. As I left I heard him commend to the customers about me. I returned to tell him I wouldn't be back and suggest that others do the same.

Manager is out of control and rude. Food was nothing special but it was close to my home.

I love this place. My husband to be and I went there for dinner to see if we might want to rent the private room for our wedding rehearsal dinner party. My husband is European and very picky in terms of service and food so I was a bit apprehensive. The dinner and service was so good that my husband decided to book the private room halfway through dinner. The rehearsal dinner went very smoothly. Our 40 guests were also pleased with the party. They complimented us on the food and selection of restaurant.

I'm so surprised to see negative reviews of this place. My ignorant , very non-local party of 7 and I showed up late one night after Thanksgiving and were treated like royalty. The food was phenomenal, the free bread and antipasti were phenomenal, and the entrees were good Seriously, the best thing about it was the service. Our waiter was helpful and kind, and the owner or manager kept coming by to check on us. Maybe we caught them on a good day, but I'd certainly go back. They treated us very well.

We visited this restaurant without checking Citisearch because it was recommended by a friend. Big mistake. As soon as we were seated, the waiter began pushing for a quick choice. After eating the meal--it was good, not great--we were asked if we wanted dessert. We ordered coffee and cognac. After a couple of sips, the manager? owner? came by the table and tried to push us out. We thought he was kidding as we had only been there 40 minutes. But no, he kept walking by the table making nasty comments about our overstaying. My husband calmly drank his cognac which sent the manager/owner into a rage, at which point he starting shouting at us to get out. At that moment the meal started to come up on me and I begged my husband to leave. We paid the bill and left...after less than an hour. Even if the food were great, I would not recommend visitors to New York go to Girasole as they might, like us, have an evening in a wonderful city ruined.

Never before has a waiterinstructed my party to order soon as the restaurant was very booked that evening. Never before: not in a take-out joint and certainly not in a pricy restaurant of this nature. This was said to us, whose reservation was for 6pm. Odd, I thought, but didn't want to point it out to my guests. (All of whom have eaten at Girasole in the past, i.e, are good paying customers). The meal finished and the check just paid, we were told by another waiter that there was a crowd outside and they needed our table. Excuse me????? We''d just dropped just under $200. and we were being given the bums rush. I got home and called the restaurant to register my displeasure. What abuse, what comments were hurled my way by the maitre 'd. Among other things I learned that if you have a 6pm reservation you "should be out" by 7:30pm. If you do not have coffee and dessert in front of you, having finished the meal of course, then you should not sit there. Go to a library if you want to sit around. (Clearly the maitre d' is not familiar with what one does in libraries). The nasty comments went on and I, astounded that he could treat a customer of long standing this way, listened as I simply could'nt believe what I was hearing. Long story short, I can tell you this much: There is not enough money in the world that could pay me to enter that restaurant again. Food is not the issue here, good manners (and good business behavior???) is.

I walked into this restaurant expecting someplace I'd been before, but my memory was a few blocks off. The manager was more than happy to put us down for a table for an hour later since the place was packed. Considering it was our mistake and should have planned ahead, we thought this was more than accommodating. So we grabbed a couple beers at a local pub and then headed back at our reservation time (8:30pm).
We were seated right away, three of the waiters walked by and complimented us on our wine choice (we brought in our own bottle) and the food was amazing.
Overall, a very happy accident.

The food was amazing, filling, and worth every penny. The service was ok but a little more casual than expected. I highly recommend the chicken with herbs and mushrooms. Nice creamy and thick tiramisu.

Never have I encountered a manager so full of himself, and so uninterested in his customers. The service was terrible, and the only response he could come up with was to insult me and my family, and to tell us that he had been there for sixteen years. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

I was shocked to read the negative reviews, below. My husband and I adore this place -- for its friendly staff (and yes, they do have thick Italian accents; we think that's a GOOD thing!), the lovely (free) plates of cured meat and cheese they put out with the bread basket the instant you sit down, the sunny yellow decor, and most of all, for the food. The selections are simple and fresh, just like you'd find in Rome. Reservations are certainly helpful (hello, it's New York!), but the couple of times we've wandered in and had to wait, the maitre d gave us free glasses of chianti. We've brought our parents and friends (as many as 6 at a time), and everyone always enjoys Girasole. The prices aren't cheap, but for the UES they're truly not bad.

I have never been treated so poorly by a wait staff and a manager in my entire life. When the service was a bit below par, I complained to the manager, who told me that he didn't care what I thought because he usually doesn't seat parties of two and that he has been in the business for twenty years. He was the rudest restaraunt manager I have ever met and if you have the option of eating anywhere else besides patronizing Girasole and giving them any business, I would reccomend doing so.

These are a few adjectives to describe the owner/manager. DON'T GO HERE. The food was decent but the staff was completely out of it and the manager actually yelled at us when we complained! I would NEVER return even if they offered me a free meal. With all the restaurants in the city--pick another.

Had to wait a bit even with reservation, there was no room to stand and wait as waiters ran by us. We were charged for an extra plate when we shared a salad. Overpriced with a bit of attitude...
