Amy Ruth's Restaurant

I?ve been there twice-please don?t ask....
I'm still very confused & unclear as to why it has such high ratings. My folks are from the south & I DO know great southern cooking. The cornbread is always lukewarm & dry. However, the veggies are better (i.e. cabbage & greens). The honey chicken is good, but dry. Yes, the portions are small. I?ve never ordered the mac & cheese, because based on how the other food tastes, I already know I?ll be disappointed!

Overall, it is better than Sylvia?s, but that does not say much at all.

I recently ate here and the Mac and cheese was so good I almost died!!! I also loved the waffles! When it comes to southern food Amy Ruth's is the only restaurant worth coming to in the city. I cannot wait to go back!

Had the Honey crusted chicken with collerd greens & yams soaked in coconut milk, OMG... talk about great... even the white meat brest was jucie. Would vist there next time I'm in Harlem.

Imagine this, a group of Koreans and an African American women eating together for a birthday party on a Thursday night in the middle of Harlem.
We had arranged for a large table upstairs for the party and were promptly given one. I was one of the first people to get there, and when entering the restaurant was whiskly greeted with a smile by the attendant and asked if I was there for the birthday party...LOL...Was it that obvious? The bottom level had a fairly full dining room, the upstairs was very sparse. With only a few tables being occupied and the large one in the back allocated for us. I decided to do a quick Anthony Bourdain check and looked inside the bathroom and was suprisingly shocked at how clean and well maintained it was. The decor inside is very homely with a few knick knacks spread about, but the clean bathroom assured me I was in for a good dining experience.
I had the honey fried chicken with a side of macoroni and cheese and potato salad. Chicken was incredible, although a little greasy. Potato salad was oddly sweet, but very good. The only downside is that I had ordered the dark meat, because I'm a dark meat connoseur, but the portion was too small! If you want a bigger portion get the white meat. I think the biggest attestment to the quality of the food was that our rowdy party was fairly silent during the dinner service. For dessert I had the peach cobbler, a friend of mine went outside and got some vanilla ice cream to put on top and it was heavenly!
They don't server beer or alcohol, but the waitstaff was extremely accomodating pouring all our BYOB into a carafe and giving a bucket of ice to chill the champagne. All our needs were taken care of with extra plates, napkins and drinks whenever we needed one. The service was simply exceptional...I rarely venture all the way up to Harlem to go dining, but for this place I will have to return again!!!

What a pleasure. We arrived around 9:30 on a Sat night. No wait for party of 4. After the manager informed us that our jerk-chicken orders could not be filled as they ran out of jerk-chicken, he delighted us with promise of complimentary dessert, all of which turned out to be on the money. I went with smothered chicken with mac & cheese and cheesy grits, all of which were top notch. The servers were chatty and friendly and the atmosphere was as homey as the food. Big thumbs up.

I took my cousins from France here. There was a long line, but it moved very quickly. This two floor eatery has a fast turnover. We took a long time with the menu because we had to translate (try describing a waffle to someone without knowing the word in French) which bothered our waitress. We ordered 5 items for 6 people expecting typical Soul Food portions, which also bothered the waitress. Our food took an hour to arrive and I feel that it was because of the waitress, perhaps waiting to put in our order. Since we wanted everyone to try everything, I asked for extra plates. The server brought 1 bread plate. I asked for four more dinner plates. He returned 5 minutes later with 1 dinner plate. Rather than explain it again, we just made due with the rest of our bread plates. The food is good. Everything is a little sweet, the collard greens, the waffles, even the Mac and Cheese was a little sweet. The catfish disappeared in seconds and the BBQed and fried chicken delighted. Unfortunately, 18% gratuity is included for a group of at least 5. If it wasn't I'd have reflected my dissatisfaction with the service there. I will definitely return, at least for take out. If the service disappoints again, then I will take my business elsewhere. Prices are good. Including tip and sodas, we spent $15 per person. Portions are good too, not too large, like other soul food restaurants. One entree per adult will be enough food, to be certain. Also, cornbread was DELICIOUS.

While my wife didn't have a _bad_ time at Amy Ruth's, almost every aspect of our meal was below average and could have been improved.

We were greeted by an expressionless young woman at the door with no apparent interest in us. Despite there being at least one empty table in the downstairs seating area, we were ushered towards the back and upstairs to the second floor, which apparently used to be used as a music venue; it was stuffy, and the ceilings a low 7'. Here again, despite almost all of the tables being open, including those near the window, we were seated at the least attractive table, in the corner, a few feet away from some storage in plain view, and directly beneath a vent with exposed insulation. We asked to be seated elsewhere and were shown to another corner.

Ordering went fine, and the biscuits served were tasty. Then began the long wait for the food; between 20 and 30 minutes for the signature dish of waffles and fried chicken. The meal itself was nothing special; though my waffle did taste as if it had been deep fried after being made, and the "fresh" blueberries used had clearly been frozen not long before. My wife's fried chicken was the highlight.

The service was friendly but was not attentive; perhaps they have more tables than they can handle, though our seating area was less than half full.

I would not recommend this restaurant to others. For this kind of cuisine, try Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too instead.

OK, the food is great, but ... we called at 5am to take out and were told we had to come in. So, at 5:30am we hopped into a cab to go there. Upon arrival we were informed that they are CLOSED for a "shift change" between 5:30am and 7:30am! Why not tell us this on the phone?

The four of us were ravenous and anxious to see if Amy Ruth's lives up to its excellent reputation. IT DOES!
The mac and cheese was so fine that I ordered a second dish of it to eat as my dessert. I've traveled and eaten a lot in the South and I'll put this restaurant up against most any southern establishment in terms of quality and quantity of food. Mmmmm....Good!

We just happened upon Amy Ruth's while on our first visit to NYC. I grew up in the south and have eaten southern food for years, so I was quit surprised to be able to order such a meal in the city! We were starving and were tempted by the chicken and waffles, but after tasting the cornbread and loving every bite of it decided to try the smothered pork chops, greens and mac and cheese. Not only was it our lunch, but left overs kept up going through that evening! It was great!

I will be very brieft as Amy Ruths is probably the best soul food that I've eaten outside of my own kitchen. There are many restaurants in NY that lay claim that they have the best soul food. If you have not had Amy Ruths - what could you possibly be waiting for. I grew up eating at Sylvias and no disrespect to Ms. Sylvia, but Amy Ruths Chicken and Waffles is just as good, if not better than Roscoes (for those of you who've been to LA). The mac and chesse is great, but the cheese grits have been lumpy at times. The whiting is excellent - not better than Famous Fish, but definitely would a try. The yams are sweet and the kool-aid is sweeter. If you are a diabetic, don't bother going.

I had the opportunity to dine at Amy Ruth's this past 4th of July holiday. WHAT A CELEBRATION WE HAD!!!
I can honestly say that we enjoyed the food and ambience of the restaurant. Being from Texas, where there is a "soul food" restaurant on every corner, we know real soul food. From the cornbread to the yams to the greens to the smothered chicken livers it was all excellent. Not too much sugar and grease or salt. The food was seasoned just right. Slyvia's can't not compare to Amy Ruth's. We will be back and tell others.

I don't understand how anyone can rave about amy ruths' bland food. i guess they must have never eaten food cooked by someone's real southern granny.....i MUST admit that they have one of the best macaroni and cheese recipes in NYC. but if you're already uptown you may as well pick another place that will have better (and cheaper) food. the tourist prices at amy ruth's are outrageous but the food is even worse. the potato salad does tastes like it has a pound of pickels and sugar in it....the fried chicken is bland and dry (a huge no-no for souther food)...the smothered chicken is also bland and literally drowning in lumpy and undercooked "gravy." i once had the salmon which was ok and they make a half decent steak but it's definitely NOT worth the 20+ bucks they charge you for it. Amy Ruth's makes food for people who don't know what soul food is supposed to be like. the best bet is to take advantage of the 24 hour schedule on weekends and get something simple for breakfast after the club, like plain waffles or eggs, they at least get those right. or do what i do, stop by for a side of macaroni to go and get the rest of your authentic soul food somewhere further uptown.....the worst part of all ....NO PARKING....and truly outrageous service. i once came in on relatively un-busy friday night around 11. we were a table of four and they took about 20 minutes to come back for our order after bringing us menus and water. then we ordered and our food NEVER came. they didn't even notice our food never came even though we were sitting at the table directly in front of the cash register which was hilarious and infuriating. after canceling our order, for which the manager had no explanation or excuse except "oh, we just switched shifts" we didn't even get a discount on the one meal we managed to get for take out.

Love it! Food is great! Service is great! The place is a little too small but they were still able to accomodate a party of 15 on the 2nd floor which was GREAT! I love the 24 hours on the weekends! You must try this place!!!!

Amy Ruth's is definitely better than Sylvia's. If you are planning to go there, please be prepared to stand on a line outside until seating is availiable. The food is great.. the menu was fun to look at. However, beverage list is very short and not everything offered is availiable. The atmosphere makes you feel like you in a down south cafe/diner.

This place is deeeelicious! I came here with a friend and every single thing we shared (two entrees with a variety of sides) was so so good. We ate until it hurt and then kept eating it was so good. You must try it out! Don't miss the mac and cheese and the collards.

This place is great, I don't understand some of the negative reviews here, or the somewhat low (in my opinion) Citysearch rating. This is one of the best restaurants in the city, at least in terms of the food. The fried chicken is the best I've ever had, much better than Sylvia's. Some of the other dishes aren't quite as memorable, but most are excellent, and the same goes for the sides. Quaint, friendly atmosphere. THere's a reason why people line up for this place--and it's worth the wait.

I don't know where to begin. What began as our 2nd day of touring Harlem, we dropped off our recently purchased African art pieces to ship at the UPS store. We asked the clerk, ?What?s a good nearby restaurant?? He stated "Amy Ruth's, everybody goes there." Up the block we went, snapping pictures of Malcolm X Shabazz signs. Then enter. We noticed a homey feel. Small, yet quaint. We were seated so close to other diners, we heard their conversations; but it was just like home. After the visuals of plates and plates of food passing by, we finally ordered.
My husband ordered the ?The Honorable Keith Wright? or Short Ribs with Candied Yams & Macaroni/Cheese. Coming from a Creole background, never in my life had I thought about cooking or eating fried chicken and waffles together - so of course, I ordered the ?Rev. Al Sharpton?. To say it simply; we had to stop and breathe. We fed each other from across the table, tasting each other's food one bite at a time. Sipping on each other's teas and lemonades. We underestimated the richness of the cornbread, the sweetness of the tea, the tenderness of the short ribs, the crispy coating of the chicken and the fluffy waffle; yet, the candied yams were something to behold. I thought I saw a tear in my husband's eye! It reminded him of his mother's yams, who recently passed away 2 months ago. Stop and breathe. This place simply took our breath away.

Pros: Prompt & friendly service; Food something to behold. Ambience, homey.

Cons: Don't eat or drink before you get there; Go on an empty stomach. You'll want it all.

We tried Amy Ruth's today with my 7 and 4 year old sons and had a great lunch. My 7 year old loved the waffle and fried chicken and my 4 year old loved the mac and cheese. I would not recommend the juices, the coffee was good though. My husband and I liked the crowd a lot, friendly and animated. There was a short wait but all the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back - but next time I'll stick to the fried chicken, I was not too crazy about the coconut shrimp I had. All the sides were good though!

We were here on a Saturday night and there were at least 30 people lined up outside, but it was definitely worth the wait. We loved the smothered and honey chicken. Best mac and cheese I've ever had. Didn't like the bread pudding, kind of dry, too much spice. But we took a slice of red velvet cake and it was incredible.

I am a local Harlemite and I've been to all the soul food restaurants in Harlem and Amy Ruth's by far is the best. I saw some reviews on here about how bad Amy Ruth's was and how good Spoonbread and Copelands is which is why I decided to write my review. Sylvia's, Copeland's and Spoonbread are terrible compared to Amy Ruth's. I don't work there or own stock in Amy Ruth's but I know good soul food and this is it. I always take people there and it's popularity since it opened is increasing cause of the cuisine. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool and you shouldn't take there advice and rather experiance it for yourself. My favorite is everything on the menu especially the honey fried chicken. You can't go wrong with Amy Ruth's. We finally have a good soul food restaurant in Harlem again and the name is Amy not Sylvia.

I was recently in New york last weekend and my sister and I decided to eat at Amy Ruth's. I grew up in Harlem and I am now living in the south.I am from a strong line of southern cooking!! My mother is from the deep south and she can get down in the kitchen and so can I!! The food to me was like from cans!!!Sort of reminded me of Sylvia's with the canned macaroni & cheese.If you want real southern food in Harlem go to Spoonbread too 110 & ONE ON 135 ST. Oh and try Copelands on 145st & Broadway!! That is real southern food!! Everything taste real. Macaroni & Cheese, Collard Greens, Yams!!! The food at both resturants are so good!!!! Now that is southern cooking!!!!!!!!!!

Fried chicken was fresh, however, very "rubbery." Ribs were tender, but were tainted by the taste of store-purchased (hickory) bar-be-que sauce; they also tasted re-heated; i.e., a day old. Smothered chicken also had a re-heated taste. The entrees were a bit over-priced. The side dishes tasted much better than the main course.

I must say this restaurant was a pleasant surprise! I recently vacationed in NYC with my mother and aunt and also spent a day in Harlem (wonderful treat). While finishing up some shopping, we asked some individuals in a particular store if they could direct us to our initial choice for lunch--Sylvia's. Everyone who was in ear shot of us quickly (abruptly) redirected us to another dining hot spot called Amy Routh's. (They were pretty adamant about us going to this spot instead). So...we figured who would know best...people that live in Harlem! We headed down to Amy Routh's and I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. The food was delicious. The short ribs and smothered pork chops were a winner! (My mom wasn't crazy about her Cajun Chicken though). I loved the atmosphere (easy, casual, welcoming... like grandma's or great grandma's house). Had a chance to meet the owner...cool guy. Hat's off to the entire team. (My only beef...the restaurant wasn't completely full, but we waited outside (during the NYC heatwave 100+ temp.) for about 15 minutes. When we were finally seated upstairs, the entire upstairs area was empty??? Other than that, would highly reccomend. Great food. Comfortable atmosphere. Made you feel like you were back in the day...enjoying family and good food at grandma's.

Not soul food at all (because there is none in New York anymore, try Chicago). But the food is good. Not a great choice of sides, but meats and sauce are delicious. Costly for it's portions. Great nice & quiet neighborhood.

I went to Amy Smiths last friday 7/28/06 and it was a very good friday. I had The Percy Sutton and my friend had the Pork Chops w/potato salad and collard greens. Everything on my plate and his was excellent. The cornbread I didn't care for; I've tasted better cornbread. The menu's needed updating and so do the table's they are very wobbly. The service was ok and I will be going to B. Smith's to see what this restaurant is about; check back for my reviews. Oh one more thing this is a family place; I give the decor a 12, not a place for a first date.

I love the food at Amy Ruth's. Whenever we would have friends visiting us in New Jersey, we would take them there. The food and service was fabulous. Also, loved when local artists' would have their work on display. Got great art pieces through this venue. We have since moved to the South, but have not found a soul food restaurant that compares. Planning a trip to NY just to get some good soul food!

If you really want quality soul food bypass the tourist trap Sylvia's and walk yourself right down to Amy Ruth's. Trust me you'll feel better that you made the walk for two reasons:
1) to premptively burn off some of the calories you'll ingest at Amy Ruth's
2) the fact that you didn't waste calories eating the drek they serve at Sylvia's.
If you want to eat at Sylvia's got to the one in Atlanta, it may not be the original but the food is far superior. If you want to eat good soul food in a bright and inviting resturant with quality service from a well dressed and friendly staff, take yourself right down to Amy Ruth's. The artwork on the window pane sets the tone for a relaxed and pleasent meal of comfort food. While you decide between the chicken and waffles (a Detroit invention, not Southern, don't tell anyone), ribs or fried catfish; have a glass of peach tea and enjoy the photos of the owner and various celebrities who visited the little restaurant on 116th St. Make sure you leave room for red velvet cake for desert and don't overstuff yourself on their delicious (yankee style) cornbread before the meal. It's just as good as Justin's but much cheaper. Watch out it's small and can get crowed quick, so be prepared to venture to the soul food restaurant across the street. I don't recall the name but the food is just as good, or head down to Amy Ruth's on 110th St.

I grew up on soul food and this restaurant tops the charts! I had the bbq spare ribs dinner with yams and collard greens. Each table comes with fresh home-made (very important) cornbread to begin the meal. The ribs are seasoned to perfection with a sweet/spicy dry rub that will have you licking your fingers! The yams seemed to have vanilla as an ingrediant that was very pleasing to the palate. The collard greens, which can be hit or miss at many places, we delicious here! As someone that cooks and enjoys soul food, I give Amy Ruth's my highest recommendation!

it was well worth the subway ride uptown. the food was good and prompt. the lemonade was sweet and lemony. the service was prompt and helpful. the restaurant is tight and you might have to wait. we went for breakfast so we only waited about five minutes. i would DEFINITELY go back again.

I live a short distance from Amy Ruth's and I everytime someone comes to visit me I take them here. The food is good and they are open 24 hours on the weekends. I recommend the fried catfish and the mac and cheese. Amazing!! For those early morning late night.. drunk club feasts.. go for the Michael Basdin- waffles with bananas and walnuts.. hmm..hits the spot at 4am. The only thing that usually and almost always sucks is the service.. a bit slow.. and sometimes a bit rude, but if you can ignore that..then Amy Ruth's is perfect..

I had the fried okra, salmon croquettes and the macaroni and cheese.
The price are decent. I will come back again. The only complaint was the fact that we had to stand outside in the cold for a table and the place wasn't even full. But I will still come back.

The dining room is a little tight, but once you get seated you're in for a treat. I have enjoyed everything I've tried. Come ready to eat because you're going to get huge portions. Sometimes it seems like you get too much food. But you can always take a doggie bag.The staff is friendly. The food is good. What more could you want?

I've never had a bad dining experience at Amy Ruth's. You go here for the food! The chicken and waffles are slammin'. This is where you go to unbuckle your belt and chow down! Dining upstairs is more pleasant than downstairs, though the top floor is only opened when it gets crowded. The mac and cheese is perfect, the sweet yams are tasty.. everything is great. I always have the same waiter (I believe his name is Adou?). The price is right.. around $15 pp. Highly recommended if you want tasty soul food minus the (pricey) frills.

I was so excited when a menu for Amy Ruths was handed to me advertising that they will deliver. How dissapointed was I when I finally called to make the order! I was told my the waitress that I was lazy because I wanted delivery! Then she told me that they didn't deliver to my area when it was on THEIR menu! Finally my food arrived and my ice tea that I only added on so that I could make $20 & get delivery was missing. So again I called and was told that when I came in I could get a free ice tea which is just stupid I told them that was unacceptable since I would not be going to their restaurant anytime soon. I was put on hold, no one ever picked up. If this is how they treat their customers how will they treat your food?

I was told of Amy Ruths via word of mouth. I tried it and loved it. I loved the food and family friendly atmosphere. I pretty much feel at home when I eat there. My favorite is the smothered chicken, waffle with chicken, and I love the various lemonades they have in the summer season. Eat with confidence at Amy Ruths.

The food was really good, I had the fried chicken,sweet potatoes,and mac & cheese. The staff was real friendly and the food came super fast. Had two friends visiting New York from Florida. One had heard about Amy's Ruth from the cooking channel. We all agreeded that the side dishes we ordered (were not good) The collard greens seem like it had too much vinegar in them & string beans were too salty. We also, had the chicken & fish (that was good)

There's no way to truly do justice to the food at Amy Ruth's... it's a symphony for your tastebuds! The 'bad-boy' waffle was sooo good, that the only bad thing was that I couldn't finish it all! Amy Ruth's may be in Harlem, far from the glow of the lights of Times Square, but it's absolutely worth the trip.

Over a year ago, I travelled from Brooklyn to Harlem just to taste Amy Ruth's catfish that my friend was raving about, and it was divine, so was the mac-n-cheese and greens.

I am now a Vegetarian, and I recently found out that Amy Ruth's has a Vegetarian section on their menu, smile.

We went here on a Saturday (mid to late afternoon) and the restuarant was full but there was no wait and we were seated right away. It's small on the inside and the seats are really close together. None of this matters though because the food was really good! You cannot go here without trying the honey-dipped fried chicken. Im sorry I didn't take a cue from the patrons sitting around me and ordered some takeout! Will definitely go back when I am in New York again.

I was so happy to pop by Amy Ruth's not too long ago and sample some of their excellent food. I grew up in the south, and they do it right here. Unfortunately I was too full for the sweet potato pie, though!

They have the yummiest mac and cheese. The next time I go, I plan to order a double mac and cheese and skip the other sides.

The honey fried chicken melts in your mouth, and is made with fresh honey from the bees on the roof of the restaurant.

I'm not usually a fan of waffles, but I tried my friend's and they were so light and crispy, in short, the best waffles I have ever had. (Sorry mom!)

You may have to wait, but who cares, this place is so deliciously wonderful, it's worth waiting. And I'm sure if you were nice, the restaurant staff would let you stay inside while you wait on a freezing cold day.

Anytime I am in NY, I always make a trip to Amy Ruth's. Let me tell you, if this is your first time, you HAVE to try the honey dipped fried chicken. It is the BOMB! I need to get the recipie because it is more than honey in that sauce. The mac n cheese is really good, just like mom's and the greens are good too. That's all I ever get, but my roomate got the pork chops and they looked delicious. Oh, the yams are the bomb. I can't say too much more than you have to try it for yourself because it is worth every penny and the slightly crowded atmosphere.
