I often come up with a special order whenever I visit Gabes and Gabe goes out of his way to make everything I order that much more special.

Pros: Love the atmosphere

.

Grouchy Gabe's is a wonderful little spot in the center of Croton-on-Hudson. The food is yummy, but it is truly the atmosphere that keeps Gabe's a hopping mecca of activity. Gabe is an incredibly interesting person who is knowledgeable in so many areas. Because of this there are always intriguing conversations, laughter and friendly banter filling the restaurant.
Head to this family friendly place for good food with reasonable prices you'll leave with a smile on your face.

This other reviewer is way off base. I was there when this incident occurred and he's distorting everything. The man came in with his family and immediately the 7 month old started screaming at the top of his lungs. This was extremely annoying to everyone at Grouchy Gabe's and continued until the family left. Neither parent attempted to quiet the kid. Maybe there was a micup in the order, maybe not, but this man shouted at Gabe, who reamined calm (I wouldn't have). Finally, after offering to "fix everything", Gabe got upset when the man continued to humiliate him. Gabe should have just kicked out the whole family -- the discourteous father, the annoyingly screaming kid, and the wife and other child. Everyone was happy when the family finally left. Nobody should be treated like this idiot treated Gabe. What a poor role model for his kids. I eat at Gabe's often; the food is good and Gabe, his wife and all the staff are all very friendly and courteous. It's like a family, and that's why (in addition to the good food) everyone goes there. Contrary to what this rude idiot writes, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Grouchy Gabe's to everyone.

CTichnor is totally wrong. Gabe's has excellent food, especially for a place that is little more than a "hole in the wall". Menu gets updated often and there are always creative specials that are wonderful. You have to try his soups, particularly anything with the word "chowder" in it -- FANTASTIC! This is no ordinary "deli" with simple, unimaginative subs and sides. Very eclectic choices very well prepared (even the hamburgers, despite what CTichnor has to say - more on that below). In short, don't come to Gabe's for nice china or fancy surroundings; come for darn good food in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

I too was there that day when this rude customer came in. The infant was indeed screeching his lungs out constantly, and while this is to be expected on occasion from a young child, the parents did NOTHING to calm or sooth their poor child. Very rude to everyone else in the place and thus no surprise that the father would be rude to the owner. He made an unreasonable stink that his burger was not cooked well enough and that it came with no lettuce and tomato. Fine, send it back for a little more time on the grill and next time ask for the extras (that's why they call them "extras" - duh. This is not BK or Micky D's but one of the best, freshest burgers around). The only rude, raised voice I heard was this customers. Even though she did not have to, Gabe's wife apologized for the underdone burgers - and offered them a free meal - but this guy still had a bug up his butt and continued to be rude. There was just no pleasing him.

So don't listen to this guy's bad review. He had a bad experience as a result of his own behavior. Don't make it worse by giving his opinion any credence.
