Comedy Cellar Classes

★★★☆☆
The Comedy Cellar is a famous comedy club in New York's Greenwich Village featuring the edgiest acts, the widest variety, and a club atmosphere second to none. The crowd is an eclectic mix of Village hipsters, yuppie types, agents, producers and TV bookers. Stars like Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, or Robin Williams will sometimes drop by here to try out new material. Each week consists of two shows a night on Sunday through Thursday, three shows each Friday, and four shows on Saturday. The Cellar is located under and connected to the Olive Tree Café, where many of the comedians like to hang out after performing.

The Comedy Cellar is so great! They have many good comedians comethrough here all of the time an it is a small enough venue that you get a really great experience.
The place is dimly lit and underground with a restaurant above it that you can order food and beer from while at the comedy show.

Don't get up to go to the bathroom though because you will most likely end up as part of the current comedians routine. Haha.

I've been to a lot of different comedy clubs in NYC and this is definitely #1. The comedians are always top shelf and it's always a great night.

If you are into big names, go here. I love stand up comedy, famous or not. This Comedy Cellar usually features a headliner. The trade off is the price. It is around 25 bucks per person with a two drink minimum. Depending on the show, it is usually packed. The seating is tight.

I love good comedy and there is no better place than the comedy cellar. Every time I'm in New York I go there. I've seen Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Robert Kelley, Patrice O'Neal, Dov Davidoff, and Ben Bailey among others. I've never had a bad night there. You get to see a lot of comics working on new material. It's a great atmosphere and the upstairs is also a great place to hang.

Nice location. Celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld and Colin Quinn are known to drop in and do a routine. Two drink minimum so bring cash. Online coupons are frequently available.

I went with my boyfriend and another couple - it was a great Friday night date night! They are very organized and efficient, even with a packed crowd. Some of the jokes were NOT PG, so be warned. No bad seat in the house, and not completely packed with tourists. Great find!

I have been to comedy shows in other clubs in the city but NOTHING tops the Comedy Cellar.

Located in a basement of a restaurant I was not a believer then i saw the show!

First off, John Mayer was in the audience watching the show. That guy can go any where and see comedy. He too decided to come to the cellar. Maybe it was because CHRIS ROCK walked in and did a set! It was amazing! The other comedians did not let me down. I left and my face hurt from laughing.

I have been to other places in NYC but I am coming back here. Again and again and again.
Thank you Comedy Cellar for doing it better than any other club in the city!

It was freezing in New York City and I braved the elements to see what turned out to be the best comedy show EVER!
The whole experience was great, easy, and fun.
Walked into the same enterance that I see on the Lois C.K. show! Passed the same guy on the stairs as well!! Was ushered into the (somewhat cramped) seating. The staff was fast and very nice. My waiter, a tall guy named Arden, was great! He recommended food and was helpful explaining that I didnt need to have drinks only to hit my two item minimum.
The show was KILLER!
JIM NORTON! I love him!
That guy from Best Week Ever, I cant remember his name.
Jeff Ross was IN THE AUDIENCE watching with me!
Whatever, i could go on but you should just GO! It was really great.
Go! Go NOW!
A lot a fun!

Went there on a Thursday night. Had reservations and was waiting on line to get into the place with my friend. My friend and I were having a quiet conversation while waiting when the so-called Manager approached us and requested proof of age. I'm 47 years old and my friend is a couple of years older than me. How much of an a*hole do you have to be to single out a 47 year man from the line and proof him?

After proofing us, he proceeded to ask us how many drinks we had so far that night. The answer to that question is one drink a piece for the whole night up til then. A*hole then proceeded to proclaim that Comedy Cellar is about comedy and not drinking and that he would only let us into the place if we were cut off. Isn't the whole purpose of a Comedy Club to have a couple of drinks and laugh and relax? We were in no way intoxicated or rowdy. This guy is a total moron.

I'm not sure who this A*hole thinks he is or why he chose to harass us, but I'm sure he is going to cost Comedy Cellar plenty in lost business and bad reputation. My friends and I definitely won't be coming back to that joke of a place thanks to him. I had been a loyal patron of the place, but never again.

While the comedians were very good, there are plenty of better places to spend your money. Places where they appreciate your business and treat you with respect.

I'm not one to normal post negative reviews, but I had such a poor experience here I think it is worth noting. The staff was so rude and disorganized when I tried to go last week. I went with a party of 4 on a Monday night. I got there a few minutes after the rest of the group. The clipboard guy has unable to locate the name of my party on the seating chart. His solution was to turn me away and tell me to make a reservation for another show. The show wasn't started yet and others went in after me. I don't want to think the comedy cellar purposefully discriminated against me but I don't know why they wouldn't let me join my party. Not sure if they have the goods to back up being a prima donna or they are just fakers. Maybe New Yorkers are just rude in general. Very disappointing they don't care about their customers. They must figure most will never be back anyway.

My husband and I went to The Comedy Cellar for a 7:30 show on a Saturday night. Admission was $18 each and they have a 2 drink minimum--all pretty standard stuff. However, the problem was when the bill came. The server charged us a 15% tip on the drinks (ok) AND the admission fee (NOT ok). He wanted almost a $20 tip on just over $40 worth of drinks (almost 50%). When I asked him about it, he became snippy and demanded that we tip him for "setting up the room" before we got there. Not wanting to ruin a good night, I handed him my credit card and decided just not to return. When he returned with the bill for me to sign, I saw that he had charged me for the drinks, admission, his tip, and there was still a blank line on the check that read "tip." So if I were not paying attention to the bill initially (and not known that the outrageous 50% tip was already included) I would have tipped him another $20--and he would have received a 100% tip ($40 in drinks, $40 tip). OUTRAGEOUS!

This is a great little comdedy club, that truly delivers. The comediens are for the most part always great, and will have you laughing your hardest. The service may not be the greatest, but its all about the show and having a good time with friends.

When I first came I was a little worried. I thought it would be too small. However once the show began I forgot about all that. All the comedians were great but the two that stuck out were David The Voice Stein and JImmy Hammer!

Was not sure what to expect here, but must say that i have not laughed this hard in years.. and i laugh a lot! There were several short stand-up acts all of which were entertaining. Veronica Mosey, imparticular, was fabulous! She entertained the room from the moment she started to the second she ended, and left us wanting more. I can't wait to see her again. She was accompanied by Ross Bennett & Judah Friedlander from 30 Rock who were also wildly funny. I can't wait to get back soon and hope to see some of the same faces again.

I went to this comedy club for my friend's birthday. Cover $18 which is O k because the show was very good. I have been to a couple comedy clubs before and didn't really liked them but at Comedy Cellar people make fun of everything with respect.

The negative part: I had one of the special drinks "Hollywood" the first one was very good then I asked the waitress to bring me a second one and it was awful and she was not close by to ask her to change it. They should be consistent with their products (food and beverage). And there is a maximum of three drinks which was kind of weird to me.

But probably I will be back.

I've been to most of NYC's big comedy clubs but I like Comedy Cellar best. The room has a good feel to it and the comics always seem to live up to the intimate atmosphere that's created here. Service and drinks are well above average and they have top comedian all the time.

As so many have already written, the door staff is incredibly rude and arrogant. I tried to go to the club (which I have been to a dozen times already) with a group of friends and was refused admittance even with a confirmed reservation. This is after spending a half hour on line in the freezing cold. Oh, did I mention it was my birthday? Yes, these door idiots ruined my birthday and they'll ruin yours, too. It's amazing what a little bit of power does to some bouncer loser who's probably still living with his mother. Buyer beware and go somewhere that actually respects you and wants your business.

Comedy Cellar is the best club comedy club in the city. First, their regular comedians are better than anyone else. Right now you can see Dave Attell, Godfrey, Greg Geraldo, Robert Kelly, etc- which are huge names in comparison and they are always trying out new material. There are also some not as famous names that are absolutely hysterical too. Ive never done a City Search review before, but I was there last week and Dave Chappelle just showed up and did 2 hours of stand up. Where else is that happening? The place was going crazy. The drinks are appropriately priced, the food is actually very good, and the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect in the village (not to mention that it gives the place character too). How can you hate on a comedy club when you can see someone like Chappelle show up? I was so impressed that after living here for 6 years I thought it warranted a comment.

I've been to the Comedy Cellar several times and have never been disappointed. You should definitely call to reserve your tickets and get in line early to ensure a good seat. You pay only $10 a person but agree to purchase two menu items as well. (Try the burgers- delicious! Drinks are also great).
The thing I love about COmedy Cellar is you never know the lineup of comedians. Some nights Ray Romano will stop in! I've typically seen nobodys, but they are so funny! Once, Colin Quinn graced us with his drunken presence. He was terribly unfunny, I couldn't believe he ever made it in show business.
The host/ emcee is Ardie Fuqua and he is always funny- fresh material, welcoming stage presence and great one-liners. Check it out, Ardie's worth it by himself!

the comedian ardie fuqua whom we met outside was being super arrogant towards us when we were talking amongst ourselves how wrong that incident was. he acted like he cared at first & was friendly & really was just setting us up for mockery like a stab in the back. he was laughing at us and ultimately trying to embarrass us in front of his fellow comedy club friends and workers. i previously kind of knew him through a friend who was there that night as well and whom was the original person to bring me to comedy cellar. i thought he would be cool to my good friends and i especially after that happening to us and knowing me from before, but he wasnt. i felt like i was surrounded by a bunch of high schoolers who worked at the comedy cellar. if i could describe the night and the venue i would say UNPLEASANT UNPROFESSIONAL MEAN EMBARRASSING UNECESSARY & VERY WRONG! the whole things disgusting!! im NEVER going again & i know many influential people who will hear nothing good about this place ever!!! posting these comments on every site i know...

After how horribly we were treated at the door & the staff - I will NEVER recommend this place. I have never been so disrespected or horribly treasted as a customer in my life.

I've heard some great things about this place - but the horrible door staff was incredibly rude & disrespectful. When arriving with my reserved party of 8, she immediate was talking very loudly and kept on interrupting me as I tried to check our group in. Yelling in my ear "ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?" as I repeatedly said my name and spelled it out so she could find it & realize I wasn't making my reservation up. They demanded our IDs rudely & the staff immediately assumed that they were fake. The bouncer just started laughing was continued to make rude remarks and did not listen as we explained they were indeed real IDs. After coming out with a book on "IDs" they would not let one of us in and immediately dismissed us and would not let us in. Our entire was completely appalled at how all of us were mistreated and glad we didn't waste our money at an establishment that doesn't know how to treat people with respect.

I really like the Mediterranean fare they have here. It makes up for the lame cover charge. Keep your group small, it's very cramped.

I went to this club with some friends. We didn't have any trouble getting in or getting seats like others. The acts were hilarious and we really enjoyed it. The PROBLEM is the man they had introducing the acts. He took it upon himself to make really brash and disgusting homophobic jokes to anyone walking out of the club and if anyone said "that's not funny" (which I did at one point very softly, but so did others), he'd berate them in an almost violent tone of voice like he was going to take you on as soon as you leave the club, watch your back! He was so rude to me that the comedian up next apologized for him. I live in the area this guy still works there. They need to get rid of him!

Honestly, this is not worth it. The comics are overrated and the space is way too packed. The service is terrible. It takes over half an hour to get a drink and the waiters all have an attitude. Plus, you need to get there an hour early to get a decent seat. Definitely not recommended.

I love going to the comedy cellar. I have never had a bad experience at this place (although the seating is a little tight). Everytime I go the comedians are great!!! I have seen Seinfeld as in Jerry there and Chris Rock not to mention Ray Romano. Come on!!! Really you never know what amazing line-up they will have!!!

i just wrote a review that took up all the available space, but no one would sit and read all of that ill just get to the point this time

--Comedy cellar has good comedians, just as good as anywhere else
--The Staff is the rudest ive ever seen
my party of 8 ordered our first round of drinks 2 got up to use the bathroom i had an important phone call when we got back all our drinks where gone-- altho they wernt even touched
--waiter told my cousins girlfriend to shutup altho she was softly whispering
--when my friend asked about his missing drink they said they would have t cut him off because hes being erratic

all in all the comedy celler is not worth the time the comedians are funny sometimes sometimes there not just like anywere else but each time i went me and my friend where disrespected by the staff all night, treating us like we where drunk loudmouths, meanwhile we just got out of work and were whispring amongst ourselves maybe the waiter should have found something else to do besides stand 1 foot from our table and he wouldnt have been annoyed by our talking because the comedian and other patrons had no idea we where talking i will never go back and if i do it will be to stand outside and warn people about to go in to waste money

i just wrote a review that took up all the available space, but no one would sit and read all of that ill just get to the point this time

Pros: with so many other choices in the same area nothing stands out

Cons: entire staff is ignorant, with the exclusion of maybe the door man

I have to say that I was on the floor Saturday night (3/29/08). The comedians were absolutely brilliant. My boyfriend and I were in the front row, he was the guy with the all blue Met outfit on! The places was comfortable, the food great and of course the laughs were plentiful. Keep up the great work!!

I took my wife to NY for a surprise trip for her 40th BD. We wanted to go to a comedy club so after doing a lot of research on the internet we came up with Comedy Cellar. We made the right decision. There was a good variety in comedians. Some were very "Raw" and "Controversial" while others were a little more mainstream. It was a great balance in talent. The food was very good and the service was excellent considering the crowd. The inside was crowded but comfortable and it was an intimate setting.

The club is very accessible as it is only 2 blocks away from the Subway.

If you go, either plan to get there early or stay later and take a stroll down 6th Ave. and check out all the "Freaks".

I have been to the Cellar 4 or 5 time over a 6 year period, recently during New Years weekend, and everytime I have gone, the experience has been better. All the comedians are good to great, many of which I have gone on to see on TV/Film/etc. Service has always been on par and I have never had an issue with any of the club staff. And on my latest trip, Dave Chapelle gave us a nice 15 minute set. I love this place and plan on going back each time I visit NY.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Cramped Seating...but you forget as soon as the show starts

.

The comics were of varying quality; the ones at the beginning and towards the end were dull. There were a few star performers, though, and if you reserve for the 9pm show (no cover charge if you do it online!), then you can stay for four hours while being forced to buy only two reasonably priced drinks! Read the entire bill when you get the check, though; I misread the, um, unconventionally written bill and the waiter thought I was trying to screw him - the way he turned belligerent was the sore point of the night.

Pros: Free onine reservation, drinks not very expensive; long stays possible

Cons: Bill is not entirely printed, and confusing as a result. You don't want to make the waiter mad.

My first time there was last night.
The food was great, the comics were
amazing!!
We had an unbelieveable great time!!
Also, the staff was probably the nicest bunch of people I've ever met!
This is truly an unbiased opinion. I have nothing to do with the Comedy
Cellar. I don't own it or work there.
It's just a great place!!

Well this was my first time but certainly not my last,i look forward to my next visit this was such a treat to me, the comedians were all very funny, but having Ray Romano as a suprise guest comedian was just the icing on the cake.
I recomend the Comedy Celler to anyone who wants to experience good service and great comedy.

Pros: The comedians were great, super location, and the drinks were good

Cons: Cannot think of any drawbacks

.

The guy who works the door is rude and nasty. I asked him nicely if we could be put on the waiting list; he could have easily just said that we may not be able to get in but he obnoxiously and egotistically made faces and said "if you want to wait outside in the cold go ahead." Everyone in the line agreed that hes a "Jer&" and "jacka#$". This is a good place and I used to come here all the time because of the great celebrity cameos and funny comedians but who wants to come somewhere that you are about to spend some good money at, to be treated like garbage? Not I.

I have been going to the comedy cellar for the last 5 years or so. I love this place. The comedians are funny and if your lucky you'll see one of the famous guys there. I've found that the late weekday shows are best because you can see hours of comedy for a bargain. You need to check this place out.

This is a great place to see good comics. The atmosphere was cozy, service was good, and the audience seemed to have a great time. My husband and I couldn't stop laughing and we were sad when the show ended. Yes, they have a 3 drink maximum but for an hour and 15 minute show how much liquor do you really need? We each had 2 pints and found that to be perfect. If 2 drinks aren't enough just predrink it's not that hard. Make sure you get there 15-30 min early to ensure your reservation is met. We got there 20 minutes early and had no problem, we even got a good table. I would definately recommend this place to anyone looking to see a good comedy show.

My fiance and I went to The Comedy Cellar and we had a blast! The comedians were hilarious, the atmosphere was cozy and intimate, the food and drinks were great, and the prices are very reasonable, and there was only a 2 item minimum; the items didn't even have to be drinks. We had so much fun we made reservations to go again when we visit New York in a week. I would recommend The Comedy Cellar to everyone I know. If you're ever in New York definitely set aside an evening for a visit.

READER NOTE: ----- most comedy clubs have a 2 drink min., this place has a 3 DRINK MAX --- you are only allowed 3 drinks.

I remember coming into this place, breathing in the clouds of second hand smoke and getting wasted on scotch while laughing my butt off at some good solid comics.

My last time here (Sept 26, 2007) the late show did not draw an audiance so we were more or less treated to two shows --- approx 5 hours of comedy and only 3 drinks.

Comics were ok --- I just felt sorry that most of the audiance was sober or leaving when the second wave of comics was coming on.

This place needs to loosen up. Research some other alternatives as this place has become played out.

I went to the Comedy Cellar last Tuesday night hoping for a good show, but it was beyond my expectations. First Ray Romano was announced and couple of comics later, Chris Rock. I couldn't believe my luck. I have heard that the big guys stop by at this club but I was never lucky to catch any of them. The shows that I have attended in the past have always been very very good but seeing big time comics like this is a cherry on the top. The whole experience made me a bigger Comedy Cellar fan than I was in the past. I highly recommend this place. Shows are always good. Food is exceptional and the service very courteous. Can't wait to go back again.

My husband and I recently went to the Comedy Cellar to celebrate our anniversary. We had a ball! All of the comedians were great including the host who was just hysterical. I laughed so hard that my cheeks were hurting for hours. The comedy cellar is a must-go!!!
We also ate at the Olive Tree Cafe upstairs, and their food was quite good. They have an Avacado Stuffer which is out of this world. I loved it!!!

I'm from Montreal and I've seen lots of comedy festivals ( which are pretty good actually) and lots of old HBO specials ( Richard Pryor, Georges Carlin, Eddy Murphy, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Dave Chappelle,... ) , and I must say the comics I've seen there are edgy. It's like they haven't any bounderies! They speak about anything they like...
They were 5 comedians, plus the presenter who was very funny himself...

The reason I went there in the first place is because of reviews I've seen on the net...I was in N-Y for a week and I have to say; for the atmosphere and the quality of the comics; GO THERE!!!
Plus, the neighborhood (the village) is a great place to begin with...Great PUBS, restaurants, ...

You'll laugh your pants off !!!!!

I've groaned my way through many subpar stand-up routines. Not so at the Comedy Cellar. Every comedian was truly superb...I laughed all the way through every single act. Loved the host...he was just as funny as the other comedians which is often not the case. The drinks were really excellent (pricey, but after all it is Manhattan).

I work in comedy in the UK and New York comedy clubs -despite the city?s comedy heritage- have a terrible reputation for not paying their acts well, enforcing drink minimums and failing to maintain the standard of comedy.

Last week I had a amazing night at the Comedy Cellar which seemed to dispel this reputation, though having tried out other clubs in the city I think the Cellar may be the exception.

We started off with an outstanding meal in the Olive Tree Cafe, which was friendly, beautifully designed and cheap. We then mozied downstairs to take in the early and then a bit of the late show in the Comedy Cellar.

The first few acts (Kurt Metzger, Keith Robinson and Gregg Rogell) were all amazing, each having a couple of real stand out gems and consistently making me laugh. Other acts struggled and the consensus amongst the comics seemed to be that we were a tough crowd.

That didn?t matter. The club was wonderfully geared up to facilitate the best comedy possible and discourage drunken heckling which is a major problem in so many British comedy clubs. The drink minimum could be applied to any item on the menu and there was a 3 drink maximum advertised which I have never seen before, since clubs (in the UK at least) generally make their money from the bar.

We had a great night and I can?t recommend this club highly enough. It?s no wonder such big name acts would chose to try out new material here. I?ll be back again as soon as I can.

So we were visiting from canada with 2 people in out party of three under 21. This club is awsome. they were so accomodating, and they made special arrangements for us to see the show, I couldn't believe they went out of our way. I don't know why people are saying horrible things, the wait staff was wonderful. They were very prompt and did a fantastic job of not getting in the way of the show.

This comedy is first rate. This definitley not amateur night, these commedians know what they are doing, and know how to make people laugh, even when their jokes bomb! The 10 $ cover charge was more than welcomed considering the fun we had. I would have paid double. Chris Rock came to our 11pm show, and was a pleasant surprise. Dave Attell left us gasping for air. Even the banter between comics and the emcee was just too much to handle!

Frankly I loved the fact that large groups are not admitted with ease. This club is small and intimate. The chatter a large group would create would be too much and ruin the show for others. I can't stress enough how great this place is. We spent 60 dollars including tip cover, and food for 3 people for 4 hours of hilarious laughter. Three people can't even go to the movies in NYC for that price. So I say what have you got to loose? I wouldn't have bothered registering for a membership to write this review if I didn't have the time of my life! I can't wait to go back!

I saw Chris Rock twice in the same week! What else can I say? I had just seen Dave Attel and Darryl Hammond and Colin Quinn, so I was pretty happy - AND THEN CHRIS ROCK WALKS IN AND PERFORMS FOR AN HOUR. I came back the next night and he came again.

I have gone to the "Comedy Cellar" many times in the past four years since I've discovered it. I can't believe anyone would give this place two stars or less for a rating. First of all, the male manager on the phone who books the reservations blatantly says, "No more than 8 people." And if you are late or too drunk, of course they are going to give your seats away, did you all honestly believe you are special??? Do me a favor, when you turn 21, go somewhere else that is made for young, immature adolescents like yourselves who don't listen or pay attention. Let the real adults enjoy our nights out peacefully without inexperienced alcholics ruining it by needing more than three drinks. Again, this is called reading, if you learned how to read back in grammar school as well as listening, you would know that you can only get three drinks. They probably would give more than three drinks if you could hold your liquior. Obviously, management is a good judge of character. Get a life you dumb a@@ trust fund babies!!!!

Read it again, perv. The Cellar was the first place I saw live stand-up comedy. To this day, it remains one of my favorites. Always a good time with good people - and a lot of times they have free admission. The Comedy Cellar is definitely a place for anyone looking to have fun to check out. Even if you're not such a follower of stand-up, you'll recognize some big names. I got to see Dave Attell last week - be jealous, or just go see him yourself.
