My twenty year old daughter purchased a 1996 Chevy Cavalier in April, she brought a mechanic along and asked to have the car put on a lift. Bill the salesman refused and said this is not necessary, since the car passed a New York State Inspection. Four months later, the car had a steering problem and we took the car to our local Firestone Auto Center, he determined that the car was unrepairable, the engine cradle, which the engine sits on and the lower control arms attached to was so corroded that it cracked in two places. Columbia Auto Sales offered to settle for a thousand dollars for a car, that my daughter paid for over three thousand dollars. The Firestone manager stated that the car was unsafe, when it was sold. Bill's defense is that it passed a NY State Inspection by an inspection station he deals with. DMV inspection by Mike Provenzale confirmed the condition existed, when the car was sold and was not caused by any collision as suggested by the dealer or the four months between the sale and and the cracks developing. In addition DMV indicated that the dealer's requirements in determining a car is road worthy is higner than a NYS inpection. The DMV inspector was able to push a pry bar through the engine crade in two places and said " the metal is as thin as sheet metal". The car is unsafe and will be junked as it should have been before it was sold,
