I went there for lunch and ordered the lunch special. Nobody there took care of us, I even had to ask for the waiter to take our order. After I finished my salad they still didn't serve my entree, I had to ask the waiter 3 times where's my entree... Finally I couldn't wait any longer, any restaurant should know lunch time can't take more than an hour. I asked them to wrap my entree to go, it took them 15 minutes to wrap it.
Overall I spent 1 hour 30 minutes just to have a salad and a glass of water. It is very annoying and upsetting and I am starving. Since I already took 1, 5 hours in the restaurant, I can't go back to my office and eat there....

Pros: great salad

Cons: horrible service

.

Delicious food, especially the meats. But the service is terrible. Takes a while for the server to come to take your order, no initial drink order offered, servers clueless about the food and cannot answer any questions while being borderline rude (or simply stupid). Do not expect an offer to refill your water, or to have another drink offered (with your empty glasses in plain view). We went there twice so far, same exact thing happened. Better call for delivery...

I ordered the Doner (Gyro Kebab) to go. When I got to eat the dish the meat was so dry and the bread was hard, on top of that there was no Tzatziki Yogurt Sauce. The only thing that made the meat even edible for me was mixing it with the rice. I am not even a big rice eater. This cost me $17 and I feel I wasted the money for this junk food no wonder it was so quiet inside there sitting area, BLAND food!

The Zagat must of been paid off by Ali Baba himself for the score they gave this place.. Out of a possible 30, Ali Baba grills up 22 for food, 14 for dcor and 18 for service. A meal costs $31.

Save your money and go to Uskudar 1405 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10021(212) 988-2641

This place is a lot smaller in size but I have been there 3 times and the food is the best, located on the UES!

At our visit, our reservations were ready when we arrived. The wait staff was courteous and professional and attended to our needs. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including vegan choices, lamb, beef, chicken and seafood. A nice bread basket is served. We enjoyed the falafel with a tehini sauce which was excellent. A flavorful rice pilaf accompanied our entrees. Our entrees were varied and included lamb shish kebab. Portion sizes were reasonable. My only regret was that I could not try more of the dishes on the menu, which as they circled our table heading elsewhere made me wish I could be someone's guest for dinner!

I really liked my experience at Ali Baba. The place is small and cozy and the staff is friendly. I'm a vegetarian so I am a big fan of Turkish. I was excited to find another gem in the city! The falafel is fantastic, as is the hummus and pita. My one complaint is that it was pricey. I'm used to paying a lot less than $17 for a falafel platter that is still pretty awesome! But other than that, I definitely recommend this place.

I ate at Ali Baba on East 46th Street at lunch today. I am Turkish. What they serve is NOT Turkish food. This restaurant is substandard by New York standards. By Turkish standards, it is worse than horrible. They serve appetizers out of a can that you can buy in the 99 cent store. The presentation is awful, but the food quality is just beyond-belief-BAD! The waiters are not trained and very disruptive to anyone trying to enjoy a peaceful meal. I was starved when I went in. I could barely eat the food. For the first time in my life, I wanted to go to McDonalds to get a decent meal.

As I said, I AM TURKISH. This is NOT Turkish food. This restaurant is disgusting.

Alper and ilker...thanks guys. The mixed grill is to die for :-) and the kunefe is awesome. Friendly management and staff as well. Never rude.

This cute spot really stands out on the restaurant-filled 3rd avenue...its not too small, romantic but crowded, and the food is delicious!! The portions are large - even though the prices are still so low! Its a great deal. We had such a fun night, with wine, a delicious dinner, dessert, and Turkish coffee on the house!! The Turkish music playing in the background was also fun. Great experience!!

I have been to over 15 Turkish restaurants in the Tri-State area and hands down ALI BABA is the BEST one. I've also travelled to Turkey and can say that Ali Baba's food is no different from the food over there. I've visited Ali Baba atleast 5 times and have never been disappointed. The staff at times may be unattentive but that is due to the fact that the place is always packed. The place being always packed has a meaning for itself.... people LOVE this place. Anyone who I have spoken to that has gone to Ali Baba has had nothing but good things to say. My favorite dish (eventhough I've loved everything I've tried) is the Special Beyti. Absolutely wonderful. If you want to have a good Turkish meal do yourself a favor and head over to Ali Baba!!!!

Ali Baba doesn't know anything about food. The restaurant is terrible. If you have good taste, please don't go there. I can't compare it with Sipsak because Sipsak is the best restaurant I've ever been and the best food I've ever tasted. I don't even know what Ali Baba tried to do or should I say he told his man to do, because he's not even in the restaurant caring for his customers.

This is my first time having Turkish food, so keep that in mind when reading this. The restaurant is much smaller than what I would imagine, though I'm told in the summer, they open the back and patrons can sit outside. We went on a Saturday night, be sure to make reservations. It was packed. We had to wait even with reservations. We had the mixed appetizer, and the Sigara Boregi (Pan fried fillo dough stuffed with feta cheese and parsley), both were absolutely delicious. I especially liked the eggplant and the lebni, excellent flavor and texture. The Sigara Boregi was crisp on the outside, and melted in my mouth. For dinner, we got the Lahmacun (turkish pizza), Kasarh Pide, Ispanak (Spinach), and the Turlu (Mixed Vegetables). I have to say, nothing was amazing, though the kasarh pide was fluffy, doughy, and just delicious when it came right out from the kitchen. The other dishes were just so-so, nothing special, they weren't bad, but just didn't wow me. Dessert, we had the baklava, rice pudding like thing, and some cookies. The baklava was absolutely amazing. It was sweet, but not too sweet, and crispy, and just perfect. The way baklava should be. Overall, I would recommend the appetizers and the dessert, and perhaps we didn't order the rights stuff for our entrees.

Right from the beginning, the service was terrible. When we ordered our food, we were told that that it would take at least an hour because the restaurant was packed. However, other groups that came after us ate and left, and we were still waiting. They definitely don't serve on first come, first serve basis. Later the waiters brought us desert that we didn't ask for. We thought it was for compensating the terrible service but at the end the desert were on our bill. In any other restaurant something that you don't ask for would be a treat. There are so many other mistreats, but the worst was talking to the managers at the end. They were so rude that not that we didn't hear any apology, they also argued with us with such extreme defense as if we were lying. When we were walking out, i could still hear one of the managers talking behind our back.

Although Ali Baba offers the best kebab selection amongst the Turkish restaurants in NYC, the service and the attitude here was simply barbaric following an A/C crisis the other night. A broken A/C pipe caused 3 Litres of water to pour down on our unfinished plates, drinks and clothes. That?s OK! But the fact that it took them more than 20 minutes to clear the table while we were kind enough to wait outside, and more than two request to offer to bring back our food and drinks was not. The food never came and we gave up after they started serving the birthday cake. We ?managed to get? 3 glasses of wine for all the trouble but no apologies. Everything else, plus one mysterious beer appeared on the bill. We called the manager, who accused of us having eaten everything on our plates anyways. ?Free-riders?, ?drunken Turkish ladies?, and ?no-manners? were only three of the insults they shouted out. Yep, that is exactly what Turkish hospitality is! Unless you are over 40, have a receding hairline and a growing beer-belly that indicates some sort of masculinity and status, do not expect to be treated like a human being.

I went there a week ago with my friend and at first we were please becuase we got seated so quickly. From there on, our experience went downhill. The waiters kept pestering us to order quickly. The food itself though was pretty good. After we finished our meal, we asked for an order of bread, which took forever to arrive, and they had wrapped it in a bag to go. They totally misunderstood us , we werent even ready to leave yet. But since they had already wrapped it, we thought we might as well leave. After paying, on our way out, no one said good bye or thank u, which I find strange, because I have never been to a restaurnt in my life where the staff didnt thank me or say good bye or some kinda greeting after i left. So overall, I thought the food was good but the service could;ve been better.

are below average. Not a good place for a special night at all. I think it is good take out if you do not want to spent much money.

This place is truely amazing. Yes sometimes you wait for a table alittle longer or for your delivry order couple of minutes long but this place is truelly great. From its food, to the service to the OWNERS. How many restaurants can you say that about, where the owners are there and mingle with the customers. I have been a loyal customer since their early days, and this place is great. The food is amazing, the taste and the price. The decor is alittle cheesey but everything is great.

No joke, this is the best baklava ever conceived by man! We've eaten there 6 or 7 times and have never had a bad meal. While the decor is average, the food is definitely a cut above. I strongly recommend the Yogurtlu Tavuk (Yogurt Chicken). It is grilled chicken (really soft!) over pita with yogurt and tomato sauce over the top. Killer. You won't regret it. Also the coban salata (tomato salad) and pide (Turkish pizza) is excellent. Enjoy!

Also the coban salata (tomato salad) and pide (Turkish pizza) is excellent. Enjoy!

Pros: Taste, Price, Service

Ali Baba is a great restaurant for people who love Turkish food. The menu is excellent, full of juicy, flavorful meat dishes and salads; the service rivals that of the most upscale restaurants in Manhattan; and the price is astonishingly reasonable!

My friend and I went there on a whim and were astounded. We had two waiters assigned to us - they stayed close to our table and were ready to cater to our every whim. We pigged out, ordering much more than we should have, and by the end we both felt like we were going to explode.

Imagine our surprise when the bill came out to a little more than $30 - for both of us!

This place is perfect if you want to have a quick lunch, or if you want to take somebody out to an impressive dinner.

PROS: Great food, very cheap prices, wait staff friendly and dedicated

I came here twice. The service is quite good and the prices are reasonable. The decor is very basic. I highly recommend the Mediterranean platter. It is better than some of the platters Ive had at upscale establishments. The kebabs are good and the mixed grill has plenty of food perhaps enough for two. The liver cubes are ok, though a bit over-fried. The tea and coffee are nice. The red Turkish wine is acceptable with meat, but cannot pass muster on its own. Two people can easily eat here for $40. I will visit this place every now and then. It is not one of my favorites, but I left satisfied both times I visited.

Ali Baba is a great restaurant in an area with few great restaurants. It is very reasonable and the food is unreal. Every person I have taken there has loved it. Highly recommend the mixed appetizer plate and the chicken kebabs.
The atmosphere is fine...ordering in from there is a great move.

I remember when they first opened up and were serving Pizza, Kebabs and Pides. Since than they have grown into a full restaurant .The reason why I love this place is that the owners very kind and considered. It is a family run business, with family values and warmness. But shortly, the food is amazing, whether it is the juicy kebabs, the sautes, the yogurtlu kebabs or the lahmacuns, pides, the appetezers, the soups,my god, my mouth is watering. These people are so good and so busy that there is usually a line outside, and a delivery time of 1 hour during the rush hours. The food, the service this place gives, truely can not be found easy. I went there the other night and saw that they will be moving to a bigger and better location, 212 E. 34 st, several doors down. Anyway, I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!

Charming, non-descript restaurant with excellent service and most of all, unbelievable, tasty Turkish food! The bread they serve you is out of this world! I have had the lamb and chicken kebab there. The meats are succulent, fresh and juicy! The deserts (flan and baklava) were also outstanding. For once, the citysearch hype is actually true on this one. Very crowded on weekends as the restaurant is very small but I believe they are in the midst of moving to a larger space next door.

All the positive comments this place has received are well deserved. The kebabs were excellent, and the bread tasted like it had just come out of the oven. Service was prompt and courteous. I'll be back!

The food here is delicious. The babbaganoush is perfection. The service in general is very good. The atmosphere is sadly lacking. The wait time for food can be long, so don't dine here if you're in a hurry. The wait for a table can be long during peak times.

Ali Baba is by far the biggest bang for your money for Turkish food and the quality of food is unbeatable. Once you go beyond the unpretentious atmosphere, you will find friendly waiters and delicious Turkish specialties such as lahmacun, babaganush, doner and other kebabs.

While the food is good (not great), the delivery is extremely slow. Expect to wait at least an hour to receive your food at home. In a city like New York, where we all live on delivery food (for the most part), having to call 3 times to ask when your food is going to arrive is most frustrating (especially when the woman on the ohter end of the line is rude)- so by the time your do finally get your delivery, you are so agrivated that you're no longer hungry. So my advice is, do not put in for a delivery order, but instead go there in person - it will save you some very precious time!

I found this place when it was still a pizza counter with a Turkish restaurant in the back. Thankfully, they've put an end to the 'za, and are focusing instead on amazing lamacun (Turkish pizza), kebabs and salads. Everything is of the best quality, high on flavor and SO reasonably priced. I strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Mediterranean food, and challenge anyone to find a better place for Turkish in the city. It may not be fancy, but the food alone is worth a trip!
