During my search for a cosmetology school in NYC was definitely a challenge until I observed Carsten Institute. Carsten is a professional environment and offered classes that would fit in my schedule. I obtained so much knowledge in my one

Very unprofessional! The teachers don't teach; They rather spend their time gossiping around. The students have way too much free time, doing nothing. The teachers are lazy and not very happy when the students ask for help when doing facials on clients. The administration is very desorganized. If you want to learn and spend your money wisely, don't go to Carten-Aveda!

For all those New Yorkers who are saavy and know where to look for your best deals in this city, Carsten Institute is your place to go! I have been a faithful client for the past five years now and NEVER have I had one complaint about them. As soon as I step foot inside the salon, I'm greeted very kindly by the receptionist (who knows me by name now of course) and quickly accomodated to the first available stylist. I know hair. I have very difficult and unruly hair, and not to mention the fact that I have colored it every color in the spectrum. The supervision bestowed on the students from their chaperoning teachers is very evident, with them walking up and down the aisles assisting any student with a question. I have been very blond. I have been golden blond. Never had an issue and always had different stylists! However, there is an issue. People such as the one below seem to forget that CARSTEN INSTITUTE..IS AN INSTITUTE. A school is going to have students that are novices at their craft, yet the key is the correct supervision and education, which I must say has most definitely been instilled. The student must design a "headsheet" or in other words a blueprint for the angles of the haircut. These aren't just haircuts done on a simple whim! Also, stylists always need some visual aid in order to accomplish the desired look. This is necessary so as to better convey what can get lost in verbal communication.

I never intend to offend, however @ 9111I'd like to share some thoughts. You are a very seemingly boorish and racist with your mindless slurs. Honestly you should contemplate what you will say before it exits your mouth. The fact that anyone is Russian plays no particular role in her interaction with you. If you utilized it as an identifier, you should try and find out her name first. Secondly, if you have such high, and meticulous standards for as how your hair should be cared for, then your best bet is not to go to a cosmetology SCHOOL for your services. If I am not mistaken, you sign a waiver as a sign of your consenting to be treated by a student. You are clearly aware that if anything is to occur if befalls on your shoulders, not theirs. They are there to learn, and you are a client AND a model. Management has always treated me in the most impeccable manner and I have seen them deal with difficult customers such as yourself a few times. Quite frankly I don't know what you expect back if you're not content. Your refund and a scratch-off? or a free car? She gave you back what you initially gave her so you could use that money at your discretion in seeking services that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere for that price.

If you want to get a fabulous hair experience, you must do the following and I promise you you will not regret it!

1) Come with an open attitude, and also a bit of patience, and good humour.

2) Bring pictures of exactly what you want. If there is no exact match for it.. bring one that shows the color and another that shows the cut you'd like. That helps them a great deal!

3) Make sure that your hair is healthy and strong enough for whatever chemical processing (hair coloring, perming, or relaxing) If you have fine hair, or very few hair strands on your head, it's probably not advisable to get triple color processes (i.e. to be blond)

4) Make nice, constructive suggestions. A nasty client may intimidate the student and perhaps influence the outcome of your haircut !

5) Relax! and enjoy the kind treatment of the (usually) outgoing, chatty, eager to learn stylists! They give FANTASTIC ( dare I say miraculous because they scamper my headaches away!) scalp massages during shampoos, and weather-defying blowdry's!

Lastly, it is a business, and a very good one at that. You can't find service of that calibre anywhere in NYC at those prices! Especially using the Earth-friendly and brilliant products of Aveda! It's totally a win-win. You're hair and wallet will be VERY happy! =D

Cons: takes a bit more time since stylists are still learning!

PEOPLE - YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THIS SCHOOL!!! IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR HAIR AND EMOTIONS INTACT!!!! ESPECIALLY BLONDES - KEEP GOING TO A GOOD SALON OR YOUR TRUSTED HAIRSTYLIST AND YES, PAYING MORE MONEY BUT YOU WON'T HAVE YOUR HAIR SERIOUSLY MESSED UP!!!
I recently went to Carsten Institute to have root touch-up only. I ended up with severely damaged hair - my hair is falling, breaking and severely dry because their senior and best student triple processed my hair!!! Manager, Gloria offered to give 3 deep treatments, but their RECEPTIONIST'S ATTITUDE and BEHAVIOR was SO HORRENDOUS that I eventually changed my mind to go there again!!! She DID NOT WANT AND DID NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT by ignoring me and giving me orders like "GO, have a seat!". Nobody tells me what I should or should not do. She CLEARLY DOES NOT BELONG IN THAT POSITION. She called another Russian woman, who too, had the same rotten attitude. Management, including the director of the school herself, covered her staff up and made it clear that she did not care and that she was going to keep those employees because "everybody is happy with them." By reading previous reviews it is clear to me that a LOT OF PEOPLE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THAT SAME RECEPTIONIST AND THEIR OBNOXIOUS STAFF!!! All she offered me was to refund my money and advised me to go to salons to do treatments with that refunded $50. Which salon will do treatments for $50? Has anyone heard something this absurd? I will never EVER go to this place again and would highly recommend to anyone not to use their services. Clue: They have NO services to offer. However, they can certainly give you ROTTEN ATTITUDE, ATTACK YOU, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THEIR SCHOOL WITH FULL HEAD OF HAIR AND WALK OUT OF IT WITH NONE!!! P.S. Director did not want me to write a review even fearing that her business is going to hurt. It's OK for them to hurt you, but it's NOT OK for you to share your horrible experience with the rest of the world. PEOPLE, BE CAREFUL OF THIS SCHOOL. GO TO SOME OTHER SCHOOL OR HAVE YOUR HAIR DONE ELSEWHERE.

I went to Carsten today with a scruffy ponytail and left with a Heidi Klum shag bob and it looks great! In addition the customer service by the entire staff was superb. My stylist Alexis recently graduated and she did my hair because all the students had a meeting. Alexis was very friendly, personable and extremely skilled! All I did was show her a black and white picture and she manifested it perfectly. I will be back again and plan to refer a few friends. Alexis you rock!

An amazing $50+ cut and color experience.

Just like the other reviews said, you call for an appt. Once you get there pay for the service and be ready to tip in cash. My appt was at 830am and started after a 5 minute wait.

Megan did my cut and color and complimentary manicure. She seemed nervous at first but was engaging and professional a lil while after. She asked me what I wanted in terms of cut and color then made her own suggestion. She drew the sectioning and cut technique and sought the approval of one of the senior stylists. She also discussed the color process with her mentor.

Throughout the cut and color, the senior stylists walked around and examined what was being done to my hair and with Megan, they only had a few sections to correct in terms of cut...to think she was 19yrs old! :)

The only thing I'm not jumping up and down abt is the manicure bec it was sloppy, probably bec she had an exam to rush off too. But hey, it didn't ruin the experience since I was there for a new do and not my nails.

I was so happy with my experience that I got her nbr so she could give me a retouch when she graduates in May.

I'm a transfer student that went to carsten with the goal of finishing beauty school but wat I left with was more then 1000 hours completed. I really felt that I learned so many things that I probably would have never learned anywhere else like the french cutting technique taught by carsten himself which is an honor to work with someone hand to hand that is so talented and exprienced. You aslo learn how to mix color from scratch which is an amazing experience. I went into the institute as a lost person trying to find her path in the hair industry and was able to acomplish not only find myself but I was taught what it took get started with the help of some really great teacher who are not just there to teach but to listen and learn from you as much as you learn from them. Even when you get frustrated and are ready to give up they push you and help you overcome those issues. I miss them so much. There is so many more great things I could say about this school but I don't city srearch have enough space. So thank you carsten for helping me find my way.

I've been to the school for a cut before and had a great experience. My second time, I mistakenly went to the salon instead of the school and had a cut done by a teacher, who decided what she wanted to do, and how. I was stuck with a lop-sided haircut for months.
Today, I tried to make an appointment. The appointment maker asked me what time I wanted and when I said, "later in the day either today or tommorow" she was very condescending and said, "This is a school, Sweetie. We leave at 1:30." When I told her that the website said that appointments went until 4:30, she became even more cocky.

That was the last time I will ever call Carstens. I feel badly for the students there, since the faculty and staff is so obnoxious.

i came here recently for a full head of highlights and a cut and it turned out so, so well. my hair was an absolute freaking mess and omar, my stylist, fixed all the major problem points: lowlights and ashier highlights to even out the orange / yellow tones in my hair, and trimmed the layers to get rid of the dryness. really can't recommend this salon enough!!

I recently went with a friend to Carsten Aveda Institute and had the best experience of my life. I was considering getting a haircut and color done but could not decide what I wanted. The student assigned provided me with an updated cut and color. Wow is all that I can say. I met with two instructors since they are soooo busy attending to ALL incoming clients. Everyone gets the same level of attention and a customized look according to your face shape, skin tone, etc.. :) The instructors approved what the student recommended and it was all a success. I've gone to high end salons and paid a lot for my cuts and color and Carsten Aveda Institute provided me with quality haircolor and cut). I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

My friend had the same experience as I did. It all was a success. Although it may take just a little longer, the students are training and will provide you with the very best quality cut and/or color. No one leaves looking the same. The student informed that they are trained very thoroughly by Carsten Wilms and his Professional Instructors to bring each client an individual look!!! The student was graduating and was hired by a high-end salon. The quality performed speaks for itself. :)

Brandy is going to graduate soon --but if you can get an appointment with her in the next week I would highly reccomend her.
My color took extra time but she was so wonderful that I enjoyed it.
The staff and students are very friendly and relaxed.
I have gotten many compliments on my hair
The price is very reasonable

I made the appointment because my friend Lisa recommend me this School she likes the services and the price.
I will come back to get services with the students at Carsten Aveda, My appointment was at 8:30 am very icy weather, the front desk receptionist ask me to sign the proper form and paid for the services (the price was definitively inexpensive I'm on a budget I just finish college and I don?t make a lot of money ) A very polite and professional student ask me to follow him to his station. he listen to my concerns and did help me to decide the color and the cut that was perfect for my type of face ( very round) , around 11 am another student came to take over the process because my first young gentlemen was going to class The Instructors help with the color and check the hair cut at the beginning and at the end. The best was the hand massage very relaxing experience that I expend 4 hours but the result was great!!!!
Perfect price, great location, No tips on credit cards (I went to the bank to get some cash to tip my 2 students) I will try the spa school next time Recommend!!

It's a looong story, and the bulk of my experience was bad, but I should mention that the student who did my hair did a wonderful job: she was patient, asked the right questions, and gave me a blow-out after (I had highlights done). I'll never go back, though, nor will I recommend it to anyone else. The Aveda people did not want to help. Couldn't? Perhaps it's a lack of ability to com-mu-ni-cate? I was COMPLETELY floored by the lack of communication skills and the inability to assist a paying customer (yeah, it's super inexpensive, but aren't courtesy and listening skills part of being a professional???). I have never written one of these things before, I'm usually pretty forgiving of any kind of poor service (It happens! That's fine! People have bad days. I get irritated but usually it's over within a few minutes--plus, usually it's one person who can't seem to get it together, but this time I was surrounded by complete and utter uselessness. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone). Carsten Institute is a big, fat toolbox. I never, ever think people should be fired--I now have a list. Go down to the Aveda Institute on Spring St. instead.

Go down to the Aveda Institute on Spring St. instead.

Pros: you might get lucky and get a great color or cut

Cons: the service is so bad you feel like poking your eyes out

I have used the school since it first opened, and have almost always been very happy. Don't forget these people are students, sometimes you get a newbie, and other times you get a seasoned student ready to graduate, but I have always felt the students and staff have tried to make me happy.
the school opened there 3rd floor, skin care, the students and teacher could not have been nicer. I loved how much I felt like I was getting a hundred dollar service for pennies. Dreamy! If only they would do pedicures, I would spend my whole day there.

Trying to make an appointment at this salon was beyond frustrating. I tried to inquire further about services (given that they don't seem to have a website) and the woman told me she needed to "speed this conversation up, there are a lot of people waiting in line." According to my cell phone our entire conversation was 1 minute and 58 seconds. Then when I booked my appointment she didn't even ask for my name and went to hang up the phone. They should really monitor who represents their salon. I'm skeptical to even show up for this appointment.

Carsten Institute is one of the best hair schools you can go to in Arizona, if you don't think so try and go to Artistic or some other beauty school. It seems to me that the people complaining may have just gotten students who just started but think about it, they are students. Their classwork is to cut your hair. Practice makes perfect. Don't go to a school if you are expecting a quick service either. I also suggest asking for a girl who is about to graduate or in gamma if you want to get a service that is about as good as any high end salon for less then half the price.

Pros: inexpensive, students who are more excited to do hair, changing stylists

I used to consider this place my find of finds- to the point where I'd commute from my new office (Wall St) or home (Brooklyn) just for a great $150 cut for $15, which it honestly was- tricky cuts, like a complicated bob or perfect layers.

But my last two appointments have been honest to God disasters. Maybe because I've tried evening appointments with the part-timers? Or they've changed instructors? No idea. But I waited 20 minutes for my appointment, the "stylist" was clueless and completely green, and the instructor who is supposed to undo any potential disasters was asking *ME* what she should do next. What?! Needless to say I'm disappointed, and a third try would render me wholesale stupid. I guess I'm back to $70 haircuts? Sigh.

Pros: Good location, stylists use great Aveda products

Cons: Disorganized/double booking?, hopeless stylist trainees, lousy/mediocre "instructors"

I do not recommend spending your time and money here. While a few of the students are near graduation and have a talent for hair, I think your chances of walking out satisfied are slim. I just went for a "clean-up." I have highlighted hair so I only needed my roots touched up and a trim. Well, the girl (its hard not to name names here- but that would be really mean) completely bleached my roots so they were platinum while the rest of my hair was a very natural dark blonde. She tried to calm it with toner which only made it an orange color. And on top of that my hair cut was really choppy and does not lay well. So after nearly 6 HOURS at the salon and muliple people trying to fix her/my mess, they asked me to leave because they were closing and going home. I had to come back in 3 days for them to try again to fix it. WARNING: despite the huge mess, they will never give you your money back. Apparently its just school policy. Don't bother with them and take your money somewhere else. So I did return to have another stylist try to fix my hair and he did a decent job.... after another 4 hours. I know they are learning, but make sure you have all the time in the world to spend there. At least I didn't have to pay them the second time.
So to this day my hair is a very different brown/reddish/orange color, but its better than what they did to me before.

Pros: low prices

I made an appointment with Carsten for a cut and color, and online reviews made me feel as though I would have been in good hands. Sadly, I had one of the worst hair experiences of my life. I spent 5 hours at the salon and left with orange hair. The stylists--although only students--were just as clueless as the instructors who were teaching them, If the orange hair color wasn't bad enough, I had the head instructor rying to convine me that it looked good (however, the people staring once I got outside reflected otherwise). They were rude, unprofessional and incompetent. When I forked over the $150 to repair my hair, the stylist was blown away at how much damage they did in just one sitting. Don't go cheap with your hair--it's not worth the risk. And if you go cheap and choose to go to a school--do not go to Carsten.

Pros: none...located near a Starbucks?

Cons: rude, poorly trained students, clueless instructors, time consuming and orange hair...

I had my first appointment at Carsten yesterday and was more than happy with my results. My stylist (Artur) took the time to consult me and insure that we were in aggrement with what he would do to my hair. The instructors were constantly in communication with their students making sure that everything was done correctly. My highlights and haircut turned out great, as did the hair on the other people who were getting cuts and colors around me. I spent $55 which is nothing compared to what I would have spent at another salon for a comparable service. The only downside is the amount of time it takes since the students have to check in with the instructors frequently. Will definitly be returning!!

I have gone to Carsten Insitute for the past year, with a lot of successful visits (when it comes to not changing my current style at all). The past two times, however, have been quite an exception -- the first time I received a mediocre haircut there was nearly four months ago, at the time it seemed I had chanced upon an inept stylist. This past Saturday I tried again and walked away with a glorified mullet -- if you don't ever change your style, this is a great place. But otherwise, not worth trying something new at. I'm going to have to go to a real salon this week to get my haircut fixed.

I have been a regular at the Aveda Institute down at Spring Street for several years, but I'm going to start to go to Carsen after my first visit. The instructors were more involved and seem to care for their students to succeed. The location is easier to commute to with easy access from different train lines. It's hard to make an appointment and the receptionist lost my appointment, so if you decide to go here, try to call ahead to confirm your appointment. Luckily, for me the receptionist remembered speaking to me, so I was able to get a haircut. Overall, the student I got was very detail-oriented to giving me a great cut and they didn't push me to buy any products.

First of all, my "stylist" didn't even finish my standard mens haircut after 2 hours, because they made her stop and go to a class!!!

No really, think about that. She wasn't done with her training, and they had her cutting hair off a human head!? What!? Nothing could prepare me for just how much of a school this place is. Picture clumps of loud students standing around with those creepy mannequin heads pretending they're doing work. The advisors come and check periodically, but in my case, 2 different teachers corrected the stylist and told her she was doing it all wrong, and then never really followed up. Or in the case of the second one, just left it at "it looks better" and then tried to talk the student into going to lunch. Most of these students gave the impression they're preparing to work at a chain salon in a mall, rather then a high end salon. Nothing suggested "French techniques" were involved.

Basically I left feeling like they shouldn't even be charging the $17.50 for these cuts. I was a guinnea pig!
I've tried my luck with other training stylist at various salons, and usually they're experienced cutters who are just about to get their license..... this was an entirely different experience.

Nobody offered me any wax/gel to style my hair, and there wasn't a mirror so I could see the back of my head. No advisors or Senior stylists checked the cut, which is a choppy, uneven, clumpy mess I'll have to get fixed somewhere.

I recently got my hair cut and styled here ($15 for shampoo, cut and blowdry). My service was prompt and the stylist and receptionist were both very friendly. Don't be fooled by the outside look- it's very clean and a bit trendy inside! My stylist listened closely to what I wanted and made a few suggestions based on my hair type. Shampoo included a basic deep conditioner. The haircut was great, and the blowdry made me look like a star! I left completely satisfied and will definately go back again. The only thing to keep in mind is that all the students check with their teachers periodically, and the cut will take a little longer than normal, so don't schedule yourself in a rush.

I got my haircut, blow out (including tip) for under $20. The space is nice enough, especially compared with other cheap salons in the city and the students take the time to make sure they are doing what you want. A lot of people were there getting highlights and coloring as well and it all looked like it turned out well.

Where else can you get highlights for $30? Don't be scared by the fact they are students. I've gone 3 times to 3 different students and they are fully supervised the whole time. They're as nervous as you are so they take extra time to make sure you will be happy with the way your hair turns out. Every time I leave I get a ton of compliments on my haircut and color. They do a great job and I highly recommend visiting.
