Madame X is a plush, red, bordello-style bar and lounge with fabulous lighting and lots of cozy, intimate nooks for conversation. We have private party rooms available for all sorts of gatherings, accommodating groups ranging from 35 to 150 guests. Other arrangements can be made to reserve seating for smaller parties. A rotating cast of DJs keeps the atmosphere lively, but you can find a peaceful place for a drink and/or a smoke in our tranquil garden, open every night until 4 AM and heated in winter for your comfort. The vibe is sexy, classy and comfortable. If you're looking for velvet-rope attitude, you won't find it here.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Red light bulbs and lampshades cast a crimson glow upon a bordello-like bar bedecked with burgundy velvet-draped couches and a slew of nude prints. A curtain blanketing the back wall gives the impression that a show is perennially about to start, but the pulse of jazz, dancehall, hip-hop and reggae never lets up, precluding the possibility of anything but a liquor-lapping good time. A 20-something crowd partakes of gleefully named drinks such as the Sweet Little Bitch--a mix of Amaretto, Grand Marnier and pineapple juice--in the main bar area and one of several adjoining party rooms.

Hits: Open year-round, the heated backyard serves as a party space unto itself--some drinkers post out there for the duration of the evening. If you can tolerate the smoke, it's one of the city's outdoor gems.

Misses: The crowds during primetime boozing hours can be overwhelming in the worst way. There's also nothing particularly glamorous about most of the clientele.

Key Points

  • Sexy Private Party Rooms
  • Seasonally Heated Garden
  • Drink Specials till 9PM

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Treat your girl to a Cherry Pop--a blissful blend of Bacardi Limon, triple sec, Rose's lime juice, sour cherry syrup, sour mix and soda.
  2. Save Money - Arrive early for the daily specials. Some drinks go for a measly 5 bucks until 9pm; get there before 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights and avoid the $5 cover.
  3. The Extras - Throw a party in one of the semi-private areas and you won't have to stress over your guests getting in or paying a fee at the door. The Salon Rouge boasts two fireplaces and a balcony for intimate gatherings, while the Bedouin Lounge is a racy glass-enclosed atrium overlooking the back garden.
  4. Where to Sit - Weather permitting, the heated backyard--perfect for winter-weather smoking--is open until 4am.
  5. Save Money - Arrive early for the daily specials. Some drinks go for a measly five bucks until 9pm; get there before 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights to avoid both the crowds and the $5 cover.

I love, love, LOVE this cute and chic lounge. I've been going to Madame X for years and it's a wonderful place for a casual drink or get together with friends. I've been to many birthday parties here and the vibe is always down-to-earth and fun. Great martini menu! Get your cocktails on! :)

Ratings_icons rich lighting sets a great mood

I just went out on a date in this little lounge bar the other night. It was beautiful. The lighting, the furniture, the atmosphere. Its small enough to be comfy, but roomy enough to be luxurious. The service was pleasant and quick. It was a great place for a first date. The only complaint I have was the bathroom was a little dirty. I realize that that is pretty common all over New York, so it wasn't that big of a deal. It won't stop me from coming back to this place. I really loved it.

Pros: decor and service

Cons: bathroom

Ratings_icons Perfect Spot for a Private Party

yogabeth

This was such a fantastic cozy place for a private party - even though it is not a huge space, the way it is set up made it feel like there was tons of space. It is funky, cozy and intimate. The bartenders who worked our party (Alex and Jonathan) were completely top-notch!

Pros: ambiance & bartenders

Ratings_icons Madame X: A Bar Review Post-Mortem

LeonoraHelena

Source: www.nocturnes.tumblr dot com

?But I just don?t understand why you don?t want to paint me anymore,? wailed Madame X to John Singer Sargent.

?You are no longer new,? Sargent replied, as matter of fact as a brush stroke. ?I told you to stop with the slip of your dress strap. That alabaster shoulder, Amelie, was everything.?

?You weren?t the only one who wanted me. I am?I am the It-Girl!?

?Mrs. Gautreau. Amelie. Your face is as pale as your arms are plump. You are no longer twenty-three if you ever were a day. And you eat ? red meat.?

Madame X looked around one last time at the fading red couches of her once famed boudoir, arching an alopecia-thinned brow at the imprint of a spectral lover (John - Jacques - Jonathan ? and Catherine) who had lingered on the pale neck before leading Madame?s frail hand out to the garden to smoke French Resistance cigarettes and talk of all the fine things in the world.

?You can have the place if you still want it,? said Singer Sargent. ? But you should reconsider those portraits ?they?re just so obvious, although the one in the unitard who looks like a yogi may do. You may also want to consider adding a few organic wines, and maybe a starter salad, if you even want to try and attract new clientele.?

Starter salads? Rabbit food? Madame grimaced.

?And most importantly, the smoke is bothering the neighbors.?

Madame X didn?t know what to say, so she didn?t except to kiss Singer Sargent tenderly on the nape and quietly pull the door shut and the heavy drapery down behind him.

She pulled down her black gown too ? slowly tugging at the straps as the artist had first taught her ? until her body shivered in a full-length gilded mirror.

She had never noticed how her paleness ? accented by a light amber down ? had lacked tautness, elasticity. Her grace had always been in the suggestion of movement rather than in the still-life?s perfection. Even in The Painting the grip of the hand gave the lie to the cool profile as the gaze ? straight-ahead ? dreamed of raptures in cr00ked side-streets.

But her clients had never minded. She had not changed.

Madame X took the revolver (it was in the yellow envelope all along in the conservatory) and stroked its muzzle against a belly fragrant with steak and wine.

?Now what would the neighbors think of that picture!?

The old Madame laughed, clucking a Bordeaux-stained tongue to ivory teeth.

?I guess I?ll have to put out an ad in all of those Bridge and Tunnel rags tomorrow,? she said with a bit of her old flounce, opening up the garden doors and striking up a match.

Pros: A more solitary back-room invites late make-out sessions

Cons: Euro, euro on the wall...

I have to say that this is the place to go when all other places fail because Madame X will never let you down. The decor is very sexi and plush. The drinks are very tastey and strong..just the way I like it. The DJ pleases everyone's music taste. Stop by and check this place out, you won't be disappointed.

This place is awesome! Not only does it have a great atmosphere and cool decor, the bartender that was serving the night I was there was AWESOME!!! Rani not only made phenomenal drinks, but was extremely chill and literally made our night. I had some friends in town and was trying to show them the city, though I'm new to it myself. Rani helped us with directions and kept us in stiches! My friends want to come back not only to vist me, but her too! If you have a chance, check this bar out. It's a good scene....

Pros: Music, Staff, Drinks, Overall Atmosphere

Ratings_icons Fantastic Bar!

NicktheBrit

I went to Madame X for the first time the other night. It's the kind of New York bar I love - great atmosphere, unpretentious and very friendly people. The pretty woman behind the bar (rooney or something!) was really friendly and made me very welcome even though I was just visiting. These places are getting rarer and when you combine atmosphere with such friendly bar staff its a perfect night to relax and unwind given the chaos going on outside. Highly recommended. Dont wear red though - you'll be like the invisible man.

Pros: Great bar, Great people

Cons: Nothing bad to say about this place

Ratings_icons Madame X-what a gem.

MAlanPappas

We were in town and drinking our way through the city. We stumbled ( quite literally) into Madame X's drawn by the red glow. Rani at the bar, a much prettier Jennifer Anniston, made the start to our evening so memorable that a week later i'm still laughing with my friends. The mood is chill, fun, friendly and a little naughty. If you are in this part of town and don't stop in Madame X's for a drink you are really missing out. Thank you for a great time! And see you soon! Thanks for all the neighborhood tips and directions-they were flawless. And those shots were awesome. Thanks Rani! You Rock!

Ratings_icons THE place to throw a birthday party!

MadameXLover

I threw a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend this past weekend and it could not have gone smoother. We rented out half of the upstairs and had an open bar for the night; about sixty people came and everyone had a blast (including, of course, the birthday girl). The space was perfect, a private atrium with our own bartender; we even had a secret hiding spot up a ladder where some mysterious hookups happened. The physical venue could not have been better, but, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the service is unmatched. First, I got personal attention from the owner who went through every detail to make sure everything ran smoothly in the weeks before the event. Secondly, the manager on duty, Karen, was by my side whenever I needed her, coordinating the surprise to perfection (she even had the doorman radio upstairs that my girlfriend had arrived so we could all strike a pose for the surprise). Thirdly, our attractive and talented private bartender, Chaz, was whipping up drinks with a smile all night. It was a dream team of entertainers.

Bottom line: THE BEST place to throw a private party on a reasonable budget.

Pros: Cozy hidding spots, excellent service, completely unique atmosphere

Cons: Now I want to throw a party there every weekend...

Went to Madame X for a strip class provided by the Diva school and had a great time. Katlyn was beautiful, fun and energetic! She made for a great start to a night of bacholorette partying! The ambiance was sultry, the attention was personal, the music was pumping and the drinks were perfect. Left with a great desire to return:)

Pros: ambiance, service, drinks and music

Cons: don't have any

Ratings_icons Madame X is terrible!

djay123

Madame X should die. Their back porch is louder than all hell and they have no consideration for their neighbors. Smoking illegal substances and having drunk college kids on sunday night screaming until 4am is unacceptable. Part of being a good neighborhood bar is caring about your neighbors...I hope this place gets shutdown.

Ratings_icons Good times and memorable nights!!

eag264

So my very first experience at MadameX was a month before my birthday. A friend and I decided to try the place after watching a burlesque show around the area. The ambiance was nothing that I expected. I only saw the first floor but it was rather quaint with cushy sofas and low lighting. It was a Friday night and I only stayed for a few hours but the drinks I had was amazing and the host that evening Kaina was so sweet and hospitable. I felt like I was at home!!
I visited the establishment two more times and saw the consistency of the service, music and atmosphere and so I decided to host my birthday there. I had a party of 15 to 20 people and Kaina hosted my little get-together. She made my friends and family feel so welcome and was very attentive to everyone. The crowd that night was very diverse and they came in waves. There was a constant stream of traffic but I was happy that my party was able to conversate with each other without having to scream over loud music or other patrons just to be heard. We all had such a blast.
Everyone commented on how great the place was. "Comfort" was the word of the evening. MadameX was exactly how I wanted to celebrate my birthday and everyone there made it that much more wonderful. Thank you Kaina for such a lovely evening! I will definitely be back and so will most of my friends! I'm looking forward to many more memorable nights at MadameX~
"Liz"

Pros: Ambiance, drinks, price, service and lighting!

Cons: not a big place, but good for small groups

Ratings_icons Worst birthday party i've ever had....

beerislove

I've been coming to citysearch for years for help with picking out where to go for my bday. I've always been very pleased with the results. However, my recent decision to have my bday party at Madame X based on the reviews, was a HUGE mistake. I have to say that Amy, the person i made my reservation with, was very sweet and answered all of my questions. I made a reservation for 20 people on a Saturday night and was that we would be easily accommodated. So i show up at the bar and i have just about the smallest area in the place. The place was jam PACKED!!! It seemed like they basically overbooked the place. I spoke to a not so understanding manager and was told that there was nothing she could do but if I wanted, i could have a special request from the DJ...wtf? Also, the place itself just smelled really bad and the bathrooms were disgusting. The only good thing i can say about Madame X is that the drinks were reasonably priced for Manhattan. But even so, my friend ordered and vodka cran and was given a whiskey and cranberry. Overall the place just didn't seem prepared for the amount of people that they themselves let in. Needless to say, i will go back to Madame X and feel cheated out of a bday!!

Pros: reasonably priced drinks

Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE

I've been going to Madame X for 10 years. I've had 3 parties there, and was actually there for another friend's birthday party when I had the WORST experience I've ever had at an establishment in NYC. The bartender (the ONLY one on duty) was texting on her phone. A guy came up to the bar and tried to ask her for something and she told him to "give her one second while she finished her text". It must have been a text that made her mad, because she plopped his lime in his drink and when she came over to take my friend's order, she was not in a good mood. She ended up confronting my friend, asked her if she "had an attitude" and whether my friend was "mad that she'd been texting." To make a long story short, she refused to serve my friend (we are both still flabbergasted by where this came from).

I asked to speak to the manager, who was in the basement. When she came up, she didn't introduce herself, listened to the first 5 sentences of what I had to say, then said, "That's not how I heard it happened." (The bartender had complained to another off-duty bartender, who then had taken the story to the manager.) After several attempts to explain that I was actually standing right there when the exchange happened, and I was the ONLY witness, the manager assured me that I couldn't possibly have witnessed that exchange because "she knows the bartender and she would never say that to a customer." So basically, she called me -- a loyal customer for the past 10 years -- a liar.

She went to verify the story with my friend, who gave a similar account. Again, she questioned whether my friend had "heard the bartender correctly" and implied that my friend had done something to provoke the bartender's tirade. She made a condescending offer to "talk to the bartender", but made it clear that she didn't believe us. By that time we were fed up with the lack of professionalism.

End result: We texted everyone, moved the birthday party to another location and had a blast!

Pros: Great drinks

Cons: Poor service

I would not recommend this place. Before visiting the city, I found Madame X on this site. The website and the reviews looked great. My party and I were very disappointed when we arrived to find a small, dark and unpleasant smelling establishment. The floors were uneven and when we went upstairs to the "garden" area, I was afraid of falling down the rickety stairs. We didn't even stay for one drink so I can't comment on the service.

Ratings_icons Awesome Birthday!

leahpia77

I've been meaning to write this forever, but I'm just getting to it! Anyway, my birthday was May 1st and I was looking for a low-key-yet-fun place to have it, and a bordello was right up my alley! I read the reviews others have written about the ease of their booking experience and subsequent good time, and my experience certainly matched. Amy was a dream to work with and the staff consisted of some of the sweetest (and gorgeous!) people around. They took great care of us and I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday. My guests did, too. I would definitely book a party here again.

Pros: great staff, great music, great experience

Cons: can get a little crowded on the weekend, but that's to be expected

The owner helped me organize a surprise party and it went off beautifully. Our bartender Alex was great and the drinks were cheap. Everyone kept commenting on how much they loved the space, with the atrium overlooking the garden, the artwork and the red velvet couches. I will def be back for drinks and highly recommend this place for anyone having a party.

I went to a party here last thursday night and this place couldnt have been more lame. I felt like i was trapped in a dirty 1990's dirty club without any of the beautiful people or fun. Seriously there is just a layer of dust and filth an the furniture/bar etc. The crowd was really random and disapointing. One of my friends told me to go here for a swanky night in the village/soho. I was just totally unimpressed.

Pros: its in a good location

Cons: everything, its just a filthy place

A cool bar scene whether on a date or with a group. Unpretentious DJ?s and a staff that treats regulars customers like regulars ? a rarity in Manhattan these days. One bartender there, Rani, is even from New York City, another rarity. The crowd that the place draws is pretty social, and the waitresses and bartenders treat you like they actually want your business.

Ratings_icons Great place to throw a party!

alisquit

I recently threw my boyfriend a surprise party here, and it was amazing. The prices are reasonable, and the coordinator, Amy, helped me through the process. She made sure everything was set-up for me, and even recommended a fabulous burlesque dancer, Veronica, to provide entertainment. We had plenty of room to sit and spread out, and our cocktail waitress, Kaina, was amazing. She was so sweet, and made sure everyone had a great time. She also made sure people stayed off of our reserved couches. The music was great, not too loud, and we were there early on a Friday, 8pm, so it wasn't too crowded and we could take advantage of drink specials. The outside garden was also a great space for people to go out and smoke. All in all, everyone had a great time, especially the birthday boy! I would highly recommend it!

Ratings_icons Awesome for hosting a party

Twinky7778

I recently hosted a birthday party at Madame X on a Saturday night. Amy, the owner, was very easy to work with and charged me $100 to use the upstairs atrium. We got there promptly at 10:30 and told the bouncers outside that we were hosting a private party upstairs - they immediately escorted us inside and a manager took us upstairs (there is another door leading upstairs guarded by a separate bouncer) to the glass enclosed atrium room. I had no idea which space was reserved for us so I was pleasantly surprised by the room - it had a very cool vibe and overlooked the outdoor garden. There was enough seats for my friends to sit and the only con (other than cupcake incident - read below) was that occasionally, other people not a part of my party would try and come in and sit down - though may not have been there fault because they may not have known room was private. In any event, the drinks were great and reasonably priced and the music was slammin. A member from my party did bring in cupcakes which the manager/hostess took when entering the place and unfortunately, she couldn't be found when it was time to bring them out and sing happy birthday - this was the only negative. Just be careful if you do decide to bring in food - make sure you coordinate it properly with the bar and managers. Other than this small snafu, the place was great, Amy was easy to work with, and the music kept us on our feet all night long. You can't go wrong with this place and I look forward to going back!

Pros: Music, Food, Ambiance, Ability to have private party without bottle service

Cons: Couldn't find hostess/manager when ready to bring out food

Ratings_icons Avoid the weekends!!!!!

Zyondawta

So my girls and I went to Madame X on a Thursday after work and LOVED the atmosphere, the DJ was hella cool taking requests and playing all the latest and greatest!! The drinks were pricey but good. From that experience I decided to have an after dinner get together at Madame X tonight, BIG mistake!!! From the outside my friends and I could tell that the place looked like it had far surpassed capacity, but since we'd luckily found parking for two cars we decided to venture in. After STRUGGLING through the THRONGS of people we found a small, very small corner to chill in, or so we thought, until a security guard came over and asked us to "keep the area clear". ARE YOU SERIOUS??!!! The entire first floor was a FIRE HAZARD yet we were asked to keep an area clear! Talk about laughable! The amount of people dancing and bumping into us as we TRIED to enjoy the small spot we did have was ridiculous. I would not recommend this place to anyone on the weekends. Maybe if you are in the area during the week....but after tonight I don't even know about that! Good luck.

Pros: Decent music and drinks

Cons: TOO MANY PEOPLE!!!!! Too much pushing and shoving, not to mention the bathroom, the men's bathroom is right off of the "dance floor" so if there's an accident you will smell EVERYTHING

Ratings_icons Great for Planning a Party!

jennifered

My boyfriend and I held our joint birthday party at Madame X and had a great experience. We started planning very late (only a little over a week in advance), but Madame X was very accommodating. Amy, the owner (I think), is the person I made the reservation through and she knew exactly what to do, but was also very relaxed. We wanted a space for about 15 people. It was nice because we didn't have to provide names for a "list" at the door. Our friends just had to tell the door person what party they were there for and then were shown where to go. The price for reserving was very reasonable - I don't know if it's the same regardless of party size, but for us it was only $50 to have the space so long as at least one of us was there before 10pm (after 10 it went up to $100). Amy also promised us that we could have the space as long as we wanted and that we wouldn't be kicked out - which was fantastic. I think that is exceptionally reasonable! Plus, the cover was waived for anyone in my party who arrived by 11. After 11 I think the cover was all of $5 (still, very reasonable!). Also, I liked that we didn't have to get bottle service b/c some of my friends drink a lot and others don't, so it saved the argument of who should chip in what by not being required to get a bottle. About 20 people came and there was still plenty of room. We were upstairs towards the back, on some couches just before the atrium. I thought there would be waitress service, but there wasn't. But, that was fine b/c the bar was about 1 step away from our seats and there was NEVER a wait. I wasn't sure about the music at first (a little TOO old school?), but after a bit it was fantastic and everyone in my party loved the DJ, which is difficult with my very diverse group of friends. The drinks were great and reasonably priced - specialty drinks were only $8 or $9. I particularly liked the Cherry Pop. All in all my friends and I had a great time and I would def book here again!

Pros: Ambience, Price

Ratings_icons Great time, tight crowds - excellent for parties

Visnee

So it was my 1st time at Madame X and I decided to plan my 29th bday celebration there based on the reviews it had. Talking to Amy was refreshing - she knew what to say, is professional and pleasant to deal with. Getting information and planning was effortless with Amy there. Special thanks to her.
Here are some of my notes on private parties there.

We got one of the rooms upstairs - I highly recommend that b/c the tables and couches downstairs are nice but can get really crowded. Comfortability is key.
Since I had a small party (about 25) I shared my room with another party (about 40). Didn't sound too bad - except that it was. By the time I got there, his party had spread about and overtook nearly every single couch there - my group was left with only one and a half couches to sit on, and therefore had to crowd around the bar and doorway. Not my fault. I asked the manager of my party to kindly ask the other party to spare us a couch but they gave us on tiny bench halfway down the room. No good.
The experience of the party was great b/c my friends were so good about everything, they didn't complain, however I was concerned with their comfortability. I think our manager really should have taken firmer action and told that party to be more considerate to us. I paid my part for that room too and it was not fair.

OK, outside of that minor rant - you should try to get an entire room to yourself so you don't need to deal with inconsiderate outsiders. The room with the little wall nook is great b/c it has a makeshift dance floor to dance on - which people will do b/c the DJs there are great.
It can get hot b/c it's so crowded, the outside heated garden was a blessing, the drinks were good and well-priced, you can bring in your own food, and the setting is beautiful.
No major complaints here about the place and the service - I just really wished our manager realized how tight we were and made the other party MOVE THEIR ASSES!
I'd def come again...

Pros: Great service, excellent bartenders, cool lounge, music is amazing

Cons: Can get hot and tight, very crowded

Ratings_icons best lounge in nyc! i know, there aren't many left

thadeusnyc

The Madame is one of the few places left where you do not have to deal with any bs, lines, snobs, etc. Instead you get real and friendly people, most of whom are down for chatting it up and getting their groove on. The DJ on thursday night, (Jon Oliver) mixes hiphop and genuinely old school R&B wonderfully and every person there loves his stuff. you can dance to it if you are inclined and talk over it if you just want to kick it. I am grateful that the Madame has stuck around for so long and that it hasn't changed its ways.

Ratings_icons nice place but be wary about planning a party

jkiss121785

I planned a birthday party here for a Thursday night. Amy who I spoke to was very nice but kind of pushy about what I should be doing. I mean, she definitely knows what she is doing, but they are not very lenient with drink specials. This is a cash bar, so be ready to pay a lot if you want open bar for your party, or just buy drink tickets for different values if you want to treat your guests because there are no drink specials. Also, ask her if there are other parties being planned for that day (or at least tell her to call you if there is another party being planned for that day) Although this was a Thursday and I didn't expect it to be crowded, I opted for the downstairs room area... MISTAKE. There was another party planned from 6 to 9 and it wasn't "suppose" to be big, but it turned out that the entire bar was PACKED and there was even a fire marshal there to make sure they weren't at capacity. They didn't even let my friends in at 9:30 (much later than when my party was suppose to start) because they were at capacity. Although this might have been a one time thing, if your friends are punctual and don't really want to have to wait outside to get into your party, make sure to get a private room. The great thing was that there was a personal cocktail waitress for your party, this helped with not waiting too long for drinks. Overall, if I plan another party there I will opt for the private room just in case. Otherwise, place was very fun and unique, drinks were delicious and strong, and I would recommend this place if you don't mind some crowds!

Ratings_icons Have Your Party Here! Seriously.

cleanplategirl

We reserved the second floor for our holiday party (150 guests) and let me tell you...it was perfect. You could dance. You could stand at the bar. You could hide away in a nook and no one would find you for an hour. And Christine the Bartender was so incredibly fast and friendly - all of our guests loved her! Amy and Karen (managers) were helpful and easy to work with. Though our holiday party typically moves to a new place each year - we have decided that Madame X is too perfect not to book again for '08. Thank you!

Ratings_icons Once Again Madame X did not let me down!

As I am reading some of these negative reviews, I can't help but laugh because some people can really be too picky or just can never be satisfied no matter where they go.

As always Madame X did not let me down again. I held my annual Scorpio Bash (Birthday Party for 3 friends) at Madame X on Saturday November 22, 2008 and again it was a truly amazing night. Amy as usual delivers on what you ask for. Last year, I praised Kaina and this year I had Meghan, who was absolutely wonderful. She was so attentive to my party as well as surrounding parties being held that night. It is friendly staff that makes Madame X one of my favorite lounges to go to. My guests were digging the bar's own drink creations (Favorite: Indecent Proposal)

Thank you Amy, Meghan and staff for yet again making our party an amazing night!

Pros: Customer Service, Music, Drinks, Heated Garden for Smokers, Cheap

Cons: None

It's been some time since my last Madame X party (gotta fix that) but in the months since my last visit I've encountered many a swanky, trendy and classy bar & lounge. NONE of them can re-produce the feeling of comfort, allure and hotness that is Madame X. My friends and I ALWAYS have a good time there and their staff is committed to making sure that you wind up drunk & happy. I was a little surprised to see it not finish in the top 10 CitySearch lounges for '08 but that doesn't matter to me because it still remains # 1 in the city. I hope to one day run a lounge that is SOMEWHAT close to Madame X's standards when it comes to having a good time.

Pros: Great service, good prices on drinks, GREAT decor

Cons: No food, has to ordered/delivered

I've thrown three different parties here in the last year and a half, including my own birthday party, and they have all been HUGE successes. My friends all have very diverse tastes in bars, music, scenes, etc., and this is the one place that they all like (which is why I keep coming back). The owner, Amy, and one of the managers, Karen, are both very friendly and easy to work with, and Christine the bartender was awesome. After the last party, my friends could not stop talking about the music - DJ Renegade did an amazing job and has an impressive collection of music. The layout of the space is also very cool - lots of different levels and alcove-type areas, and can hold large groups of people.

I don't have a lot of time to write reviews, but I had to say something about Madame X. It's definitely one of my favorite places in the city.

Ratings_icons IT'S ALL REAL, AND ALL GOOD

No gimmicks, it's part warm and welcoming part see and be seen and all about real. Great staff, no question and great drinks. Lighting is perfect. Color red is awesome. Outdoor area is ridiculous. The upstairs is ridiculous. Ridiculous meaning incredible. I hesitate to write lest someone finds my discovery but a friend in the biz said this helps and well I've found plenty of finds this way. Enjoy!

Pros: outdoor space, staff, drinks, lighting, seats, upstairs, drinks, dj

Cons: no food

If you're planning on hosting a party, I highly recommend Madame X. I hosted a birthday party last year for 30 people, and working with the manager, Amy, couldn't have been easier. They didn't charge a lot of money to reserve a spot, and they waived the cover for my guests (unlike many places). At the party, the bartenders took care of my guests, and we didn't have to wait forever to get a drink. There weren't any slip-ups, and everyone enjoyed the space.
Amy and her team were so nice that I'm planning another event there in a few weeks.

Pros: Service, drinks, decor, garden, great place to host a party

Cons: I can't think of any

Last night I threw a party here just for the hell of it and Madame X was the perfect venue. The upstairs room was very roomy with plenty of comfortable seating. The music was great (not too loud) and most importantly our bartender, Christine, was on point getting drinks out to everyone waiting. Great spot. Great service. All around a great experience! I definitely will be hosting another party here in the future. Special thanks to all the Bachelorettes that showed up!

Pros: great atmosphere, exceptional service

i just celebrated my bday with about 30 or so friends at Madame X, and would highly recommend it to others to do the same. Unlike most nyc clubs that require bottle service/outrageous reservation fees/and act like they are doing you a favor by allowing you to spend your $ at their establishment - Madame X was a breathe of fresh air.
they managers are polite, accomidating and most of all welcoming. the fee to reserve space for a large group was extremely reasonable / the drink prices were not expensive / and most of all the music was great. the dj (lorenzo) had the party dancing until well into the night. all this, and still a great decor of red lights and plush couches. AND a cute outside area to grab some fresh air or a quick smoke.
Thank you Amy, Jason and rest of the Madame X staff for being so wonderful and allowing me to have a memorable stress free birthday!

purpleswirl333

I just had my 30th Bday party and Amy was great in helping me set everything up. The staff was very nice and prompt even when I asked them to move furniture for me. The drinks were priced right, even when a bought several bottles of champgne. If you are thinking of having your party in the Atrium request the space outside of the room as well, because our party didn?t all fit in the atrium space and we were in the middle of someone else?s party. I will definitely will be returning.

Pros: Well priced drinks

Cons: No speakers in the atrium

Had a friend's surprise bday party there and the event planner (Amy) was unbelievably nice, accomodating and attentive to all our needs. Was able to comp cover of $5 for everyone and even managed to get us a private area with no fee! Super friendly bartenders and a great chill spot. Highly recommend this NON PRETENTIOUS bar/lounge to those of you who are sick of snobby clubs/lounges.

I decided to have my boyfriend's and my co-birthday party at Madame X - and I could not be happier with my choice!!! The bar is gorgeous - very "hot" and relaxing with great music. Amy, the manager, was so friendly and helpful from the moment I called her, and she reserved almost the entire downstairs lounge area of the bar for us. It was incredible - we felt so VIP!! Jason the manager made a point to find me and introduce himself, which was very cool, I also have to give a HUGE shout to Alex the bartender - not only were his drinks perfectly made but he was friendly and I NEVER had to wait for a drink - he rocks! The cocktail waitress had an attitude but we were all having so much fun that we were able to overlook that detail and enjoy ourselves. I can't tell you how many people have asked me how I found this place and want to go back. Overall it was an amazing way to celebrate my birthday and I'm so happy I went - you won't be disappointed!

Ratings_icons BEST LOUNGE ON THE PLANET!!

flirtingtimecom

As the Chief Flirting Officer of FlirtingTime dot com, we have had our soirees at very nice venues in NYC. However, none have surpassed the stellar customer service, jaw-dropping responses, in terms of the ambiance and beauty of the layout, from my members. Men and women gasped when they saw the space, like out of a movie set, where they would get their flirt on! One lady said, "The Madame is quite cool!" One man said, "I feel like I am in the home of a rich and very cool friend." This venue is perfect for all types of events, from book-signing, cocktail parties to small weddings! Amy, Alex, Ronnie, Jason and Karen stumble over themselves to contribute to your good time. Another plus are the drink specials which are so inexpensive! Everyone owes it to themselves to shake the pressures of their work day at this venue. The downside is that you won't want to leave to go back to your real life. Bring your down-to-earth but taste-setting friends. If you are planning a unique and classy event where intimacy is the key, call Amy today. Check their website for a menu of their DJ and event offerings. I am proud to say that this venue is the new home of FLIRTINGTIME dot COM, where ladies are ladies and men are men. Come and get your flirt on!

Pros: Ambiance, Sofas, Lighting

Cons: You won't want to leave!, Will lose track of time!

was having a great time until i found out they ripped me off. paid $50 for the sofa area. paid an additional $50 to avoid my guests paying a cover after 11. as it turned out, they still charged everyone of my friends $5 to get in. i found this out the day after when 1 of my friends had mentioned it in passing. when i spoke to everyone else, they all paid a cover. i don't recommend going there unless you want to get ripped off.

Cons: rip off

What a choice! I always knew I wanted to host something here but didn't know what, so I threw my fabulous self a fabulous bday party @ the Madame. Not only was the place hot, the staff was on fire too! Kristine the bartender, literally tending to my every wish and Jason was on point with updates on drink specials and keeping tabs on my party! They were a fantastic staff, gracious and helpful, all knowing and patient! My guests raved about them and the bar!! Will be back again for sure!!! Victoria

Pros: Chill Music, Vibe, Garden and Couches

Ratings_icons Excellent place to throw a party!

cruiser7

I threw a party here with about 40 of my friends and it could not have gone any better. They reserved a few very comfortable couches for me in the back room which had easy access to the outdoor patio, allowing people plenty of space to mix n mingle. The staff was extremely nice and courteous, promptly bringing our delicious drinks with a smile. It was a special bonus when Amy, who set up our party, brought out treys of hors d'ouevres because she had extras from another party. Everyone said the venue was awesome, which made me really happy i had found this hidden gem!

Pros: Excellent Atmosphere, Friendly Service, Outdoor Patio

Ratings_icons I LOVE this place and, normally, I can't stand anything.

That McCloskey broad knows her stuff -- as if she's been bellying up to the bar since being released from the womb. Accommodating and gracious yet cynical and blunt, she will have no problem welcoming you into her shack of sin, but then tossing you out on your keister if you start showing signs of being overserved. Oh yeah, the drinks are luscious and the place looks cool, too.

Pros: Timeless Ambiance, Cocktail Selection, Accommodating Staff

Cons: None

From the decor and the artwork on exhibit to the attentive staff and creative, inexpensive drink specials, you can't go wrong with Madame X. We've been going to the weekly game night on Tuesdays and have attended events on Thursdays and on the weekends and have never been disappointed.

Pros: atmosphere, price, music

Went with friends and we got a couch in the back, which you melted into. Only to be kicked out by the staff who said it was reserved, but didn't have a sign on it. We got sent into the bar area, which was okay, but not as comfy as the couches. The upstairs was closed for a party and we didn't make it outside to the garden. Would go back, but definitely need to get a couch or find the way to the garden.

I absolutely loved this place!!!! I went there on a first date and my date said that he could "fall asleep" right on the couch (that's how cozy it is). The scence is very warm and friendly and the bartender was like an "average Joe". It's definately a place that you can go to and feel totally comfortable.

Pros: open late

Ratings_icons Beautiful Lounge

b00pi3flak3s

Its a beautiful place here, both inside and out. Although it looks somewhat shady at times, the interior of the place makes one think twice. The drinks are not cheap as even a bottle of champagne (served in a group + bucket of ice) cost nearly $100. The service is apathetic at times, but worth the visit either way.

Pros: Ambiance, Service

Cons: Drinks, Parking, Crowded

Ratings_icons Perfect Party Destination

I recently held a private 21st birthday party at Madame X in the upstairs lounge with about 40 guests. Madame X is certainly quite a find! The upstairs lounge is beautiful and perfectly accomodated everyone. Leah, our personal bartender, thoughtfully catered to everyone's needs and did an outstanding job. The rest of the staff was warm and friendly and available at a moment's notice. I would certainly hold another event at Madame X, given the overwhelmingly positive response from all my guests at the end of the night. If you're looking for a place to throw a party, Madame X is the spot!

Pros: Friendly staff, Nice Decor, Hassle-free

Cons: None!

Madame X was well worth it. It was sexy and fun and relaxed. Nice mix of people. We went with a a group of eight and easily found our niche in the outdoor garden. Although the comfy couches were available it was a suprisingly nice warm November night. All the patrons were friendly and the bartender was generous and attentive. the drinks are great, the signature drink "Madame X" was delish. The martinis were strong and yummy. The music was chill and created a funky vibe for everyone to nod their heads to. I am so glad i finally made it here, been trying to get here for over a year and it was even better than anticipated.

Pros: cool vibe , great drinks, outside garden
