We would like to recognize our salesperson at Pintchik, Shana, who was very knowledgable and helpful in our selection of wooden blinds. The service was excellent.

Without these guys I'd be stuck going a million miles to Home Depot. Good quality paints and knowledgeable help when you can get it. If you join the 'club' it is slightly cheaper.

Pros: large and varied inventory

Cons: can be expensive

I've been coming here for about 10 years and it was definitely better when I first started coming here.

The selection is worse for one: at one point the store was the size of about 6 storefronts. I would say it's down to about 4 now.

But I would say the biggest problem is that 1/2 the store is locked away in cases of one kind or another--screws, tools, all the plumbing supplies--and the staff basically shuttles from case to case unlocking them with an exasperated look on their faces.

As a result as others have noted it's really hard to get someone's attention.

It's still the best place in the neighborhood to buy paint, but I try to get other stuff elsewhere.

I don't know what's up with all the bad reviews. I've been going to this place pretty solidly during our renovation over the past year. I'm somewhat handy, but certainly don't know everything, and I've always found the staff helpful. I would rather go to these guys because they actually know about stuff and can give you direction that's way better than the help I've gotten in Lowe's and Home Despot. And it's certainly easier for me to go here than over there, so I hope they stay in business. I think the prices are okay. Not the lowest, but for a small hardware store, they're fair. Cheers, A

I've been shopping at Pintchik since 1995 and I'm now putting together my fourth apartment with their help. Though it usually takes a minute or two to find a salesperson to ask a question, once I do they spend as much time as I need to tell me whatever it is I need to know, from mounting shelves on dry wall to what kind of paint to get.

While I appreciate the 'down home' atmosphere of this old-school hardware store, my experience was a bit lackluster. It is frustrating to get back home and find that they gave you the wrong items, then have to head back to explain it to several people before getting the right answers and the right products. The prices are a bit on the steep side as well, although it's easier to buy here than at say Home Depot based on size alone. I'd be okay with the prices if the service were better.

the glowing reviews here are shills. look at the commentors' review history, many many of the 5 star givers only have one review, and its for Pintchik. Really? when were you so inspired by a hardware store that you signed up for an account to post just that review?

Let this be proof that this place is dishonest, on top of overpriced and HORRIBLE service. Only once was I treated nicely, otherwise you'll be made to feel like you're not worth their time.

I live not to far away from Pintchik and I go there when I "think" of it. This hardware store has the potential to be a "go to" resource if they would get their act together. Considering Home Depot is either, in Coney Island, Fort Hamilton Parkway, or 23 Street in Manhattan, they could make good money. Maybe they make their money with the landlords of the surrounding buildings or their window treatments and contracts etc. and the regular customer is not that important. As far as service is concerned, they are the pits, (which is par for the course for most stores in the city.) If you know exactly what you want, you can go right to the shelf and pick it up, (someone usually tells you it's 'over there' as they point off into space - don't you just hate that?) Don't ask for advice, because most of the time they don't know and even if you bring in specifics, or a picture, they are just as lost as polar bear in a snow storm. The sales clerks are just there, so there is no need to bother them as they talk to each other and not the customer. (Sort of like J&R Music World.) Price wise, it's good considering going anywhere else will cost you train fare, gas and time. My only hope is that they read these reviews and take them to heart to know their products base, serve the customer and at least 'act' they like their work. The store has great potential and intention but as you know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. -The best to you Pintchick!PJ

I walked past three other hardware stores the other day to get to Pintchik, because I knew they wouldn't treat me like a dumb blond. A really nice guy (he wouldn't tell me his name..."there's no 'I' in team" he says...) helped me find the right sized screws to replace the ones that my cat stole from me so I could re-mount my wall sconce, and then gave me the screws for free. And when I couldn't get my kitchen faucet apart to install a water filter several months back, another staff member assured me it came apart and sold me a 7$ wrench to do the job instead of trying to sell me a whole new faucet. They are awesome there, and I find what I'm looking for 95% of the time. I'm glad I live nearby!

I know him, and I am covinced...The owner is probably THE most insincere person I have ever come across. The employees do try, and most are actually very nice people, but they are treated so inhumanly that it is hard for them to care. No, I am not a disgruntled employee.

I've been using Pintchik Hardware since I built out an artist's loft in the neighborhood in June 2000. It's a nice comfortable size between a giant Home Depot warehouse and a bodega hardware store. You can get everything from traditional hardware, plumbing, and painting supplies, to a decent selection of home furnishings; I rented a full wood floor refinishing sander from them (although I don't know if they still have it) and anything that didn't come from a contractor supply company (like the 100 sheets of drywall and the water heater) came from Pintchik. They have almost everything you need, but you can still get in and get out in a reasonable amount of time.
The service at the store is great; sometimes the store is crowded and very busy, but most of the staff has been there since I've been going, and they've always been pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable, even when they've got 5 people asking them questions. I've found that the owner, Matt Pintchik, will bend over backwards to help anyone who comes into his store (or even people just walking by it), and seems to wish that he could help every customer individually. I wish I had this kind of neighborhood hardware store near my new apartment.

I could not be more pleased with the attention I received at this store. I purchased a heavy duty extension cord at a Manhattan Ace hardware but when I got home I realized that I needed to exchange it because the connection prongs were not compatible. Rather than make the long trip to Manhattan, I went to Pintchiks where the sales people were more than helpful they were wonderful - gave me a new cord with the proper prongs no problem. Over the many years that I have visited and purchased many items from this store I have never been unhappy or felt poorly treated. They have my business from now on ... in fact I am off this week end to purchase some paint. Thank you Pinchik!

I've had nothing but great experiences here. In fact, on my last visit they not only recommended a competitor (to cut a key they were unable to do themselves), they gave me -- free! -- three copies of another key because it was for a public school teacher.

I just went to Pintchik to pick up some lock washers. I am always amazed at their level of customer service and good old fashioned neighborhood friendliness, even for a 50 cent purchase. This place reminds me of the days before everything corporate took over small town USA. ( I know, Brooklyn isn't a small town) I would just like to thank Pintchik for staying in Park Slope and commend them on their commitment to provide outstanding service at a time when you just don't find that anymore.

I have a pink bathroom. The toilet, the bathtub, & the tiles all exude a sense of quiet femininity. Unfortunately, I?m a straight white guy, so everything I buy for the bathroom HAS to be blue. And I?m to interior decorating what Rod Stewart is to fashion. So, I?ve been looking for a blue wall clock (I have I.B.S. and I spend more time in the john than any two people should). I?ve visited every Closeout Connection, mom & pop hardware/electronics store, K-Mart, and 99 cents & Up store that I can find and... nothing. Finally, I decide to give these folks a try. The only seemingly blue clocks are on the top shelf of their cabinet which contain the broken, discontinued and display models. So Chris, a friendly salesman, proceeds to get up on a ladder & show me every dark looking clock up there until we find one that is Navy blue & works. He then stays up on the ladder for another five minutes while I go through all the shower curtains asking his opinion on every one and having him check the price and availability. He never even looks at me sideways & evens points me towards a cool rubber bathmat that matches my new curtains. Then, John, the cashier, informs me of & signs me up for the store card, which saves me a few bucks on the spot (and doesn?t cost me a thing), and he even laughs at my corny jokes. The next day, I put up the clock, lay down the bathmat, and realize the curtain doesn?t go with anything. So I returned it today and John gave me a full refund, without any hassles. These guys should get hazard pay for this kind of thing, or at least time and half. And yes, the store prices may not be the cheapest in Brooklyn, but the wide selection, friendly, helpful and above all patient staff make you feel like a valued customer regardless of how much you spend or how nutty you are. And in this day and age of soulless and disinterested Home Depot style superstores, I?ll take great customer service over a little bit of savings any day of the week.

Pintchik's is all one could hope for in a hardware store. They're the first place to go in confidence that it will be there on the shelf waiting for you, be it tools, paint, screws, light bulbs, etc. The staff is courteous, knowledgeable, and have often directed me to the exact items I'd need for the particular job. Ask for Sal; he knows his stuff. We've also had success asking them to order items that weren't available; they were in store within days. All in all we've formed a wonderful neighborly relationship with Pintchik's and look forward to continued business with them for years to come.

I don't understand all the customer service complaints. I switched to Pintchik after several lousy experiences at Tarzian and have been coming back (happily) for several years. Was in last night for custom paint; two of the counter guys were helping other customers, and after waiting for a bit, a third guy materialized who quickly tracked down the new color code (Pratt & Lambert having changed the numbers in the intervening years) and it all went smoothly. Having seen the negative reviews on this site, I actually made a point of listening in to the other conversations--in both cases the other customers were also getting very good, thorough, expert service. So I am at a loss to explain the bad reviews. FWIW, Pintchik is very aware of them, and I overheard one of the guys say to one of the customers (they evidendly knew each other) that they would appreciate any kind words on City Search.
So here are mine.

I don't usually write these things but I recently visited Pintchiks and found them to be making a real effort to improve their customer service reputation. I usually shop there for paint, of which they have a very good selection. This time I needed a ceiling fan, which they carry but it is not a big item for them. When they didn't have exactly what I wanted in stock, they spent a lot of time with me to look at their distributors online sites to look for it. I originally went to both Lowes and Home Depot which are closer to where I live. They had so little information and no one willing to help me find the information that it was a real relief to get the help I received from the staff at Pintchik.
I will definitely continue to shop here.

My wife and I have been going to Pintchik for about 20 years mostly for painting supplies. The staff couldn't be more helpful, recommending products and even throwing in a few free items or discounting items because they were genuinely enthusiastic about the item. An oddball place with a big cow out front, free popcorn and dog food. Sometimes we've encountered staff who didn't quite know what they were doing but that has mostly been the exception and their choice of paint is unparalleled.

The customer service I received today has revived my belief in patronizing the neighborhood stores, especially during this period of rising gas prices. Who wants/needs to drive to Home Depot when we can get top notch service right near home!! I needed four pegs for my bookshelf and when we couldn't find the right size, the person who was assisting me used his ingenuity, found a metal rod and sawed off four pegs that matched the size I needed. I am a very happy shopper!

I LOVE this store. They have everything you need and more. My husband has taken care of several projects in the house and there is not a thing Pinckik has not been able to help him with. It does not matter with what questions you come, they always get creative with you. Today I was even helped by Matt Pintchik himself. He took the time to find out what I needed and went even a step further to help me assemble something I was having trouble with. There is no other store that provides this kind of service.

I've been here several times and repeatedly have found the employees to be rude, impatient, patronizing, and not helpful (except for the female cashiers, who have actually corrected wrong information given to me by a salesperson). I usually like to support a mom-and-pop operation, but I won't shop here anymore.

Fist of all if you are an idiot or rude the guys at Pintchik, they will tell you so. That said; I go there for everything I need from a hardware store. They few times they didn't have what I needed they gave me the number to who did!
I have also had 14 keys of all sorts made there and the one time a key was bad they replaced it on the spot and joked with me, along with an apology.
One man in particular stands out. I believe his name is Matthew Pintchik. He simply is one of the nicest, most "real" people you'll ever have the pleasure to work with and how he relates to his employees is also a treat. I often ask my myself why don't more companies do the same.
Let me add one more thing. If you have a problem with this store you should look in a mirror and realize you are probably looking at a - how do I say... not nice person.

Overpriced, overpriced, overpriced!! Did I mention overpriced? I'll be heading into the city shortly to Bed Bath and Beyond and the Container Store, where things are **affordable**

I was warned against shopping at Pintchik by friends in Park Slope. They claimed the store is overpriced, that the staff tries to get you to overspend, and that the items can be found more cheaply at nearby Target... but I wanted to go anyway, hoping to support a smaller store. Sadly, my friends were all right. The people here are resoundingly rude. In the paint section section, 4 staff members lounged about, and I had to ask 3 people to help me before someone even acted like I was there! After discussing my needs, the saleswoman SWORE I needed to spend nearly $50 in expensive supplies in addition to their most expensive paint ($40 a gallon!), even though I said I had a budget and didn't need the expensive stuff. It was as though the saleswoman wasn't even listening to what I was saying. Offended, I left, and I will never return. Don't be fooled!

I was reminded how much I love Pinchik on a recent shopping expedition. The store always has everything I want - in this case Bondo, some stain, a dutch bolt lock, a padlock, a box to store some photos in, packing tape and snow melting salt - and I can't imagine anyone in the world who would prefer a trip to Home Depot or Loews.

If you phrase your first question correctly, and (by chance) to the right person, you can score your own personal shopper and the trip becomes a breeze. I am completely allergic to, and bored by, all home improvement projects but Pinchik makes the experience begin (at least) a lot easier. Unbelievably, at the end of this particular trip, the man behind the counter noted how much stuff I had and asked me if I'd like a hand carrying everything to the car, and a bloke from the back room helped me across the road with the heavy bag of snow melter.

You can't fault that.

My wife and I are moving into a new apartment and went back to Pintchik because of their excellent paint selection. They were exceedingly helpful and highly knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics covering everything from primers to window gates. There's a real neighborhood family feel to a store that has seen it all. If they didn't have closing hours, we might still be there. We'll definitely be back for anything we need to get done right. They even have free popcorn and a massage chair. Excellent!

Pros: Lots of options, friendly people, a hardware bonanza

Cons: not open 24 hours (that would be awesome!!!)

I was new to Park Slope, moving into a very old brownstone and in need of a lot of help and advice on just about every thing to do my renovations. We hired a contractor to do the major structural work but my wife and I decided to do the fine work such as painting on our own. The staff @ Pinchik was Great! They got us the right primers, paints brushes and tools to do a wonderful job on our house. They helped with many other suggestions such as getting a power drill with screwdriver bits to save time on work, a 7 foot ladder for painting the high ceilings and a bucket of salt and snow shovel for winter side walk cleaning... In the three years I have lived in Park Slope their advice on my home improvement projects has always been valueble and time saving. I highly recomend Pinchik's.

Three years ago, my wife and I moved into a new place and painted all the rooms except the bathroom. We decided it was time to finish the job (as we have bunch of guests coming over for a party soon).

We decided on a sea and sky theme for the bathroom (light blue / dark blue plus clouds). Going into Pintchik, we had a bunch of questions:
1) Did we need primer?
2) What should we do about painting the steampipe?
3) How could we get a nice cloud effect?

Our helper was super-friendly and spent about a half hour answering our questions, showing us how to achieve a tranlucent looking cloud, and making sure we had the right supplies.

Lastly, he helped us save money - by figuring out which brand and the right quantity to buy.

Did I mention that the mix custom paint colors on the spot.!! You just pick the colors you want, they have hundreds of color selectons on these strips of paper, and they mix in the store for you.

In short, Pintchiks turned buying paint in super-fun event. I highly recommend them.

The store does have a good location and nice selection, but their service staff is usualy useless and helpless. This is not an isolated incident. We really gave these guys a few chances, tried to support a local establishment rather than some chain store. Three cases in point: We tried to get advice on drills, and the salesperson just read the little labels in the diplay out loud. Really informative. After a minute he lost his patience and gave us a sour face, and basicaly just wantd to sell something to get rid of us. Antoher time we were looking for a shower curtain rod, and had to convince another salesperson that we know it's in the back, because we saw it the other day. The guy denied that they have such a thing, and we had to drag him there and show him. Then he told us the rod was 6' long, when it was actually 5', so we had to come back the next day to return it. On another occasion we tried to get a refund for a lousy $8 and they messed it up and never gave us that money. They always get the change wrong, or they charge you wrong prices - always check the slip! I say, let them struggle a bit, maybe they'll come to their senses and improve. I'm boycotting them until 2008.

Pros: location is convenient, okay selection

Cons: very bad service, and they often make mistakes during checkout

i decided to paint my room and remember that big paint store in the corner of flatbush av. and bergen and decided to go buy a paint from there..came in and saw more employees then customer and was looking for someone to help me..i was very polite, said hi and every person i greet just say hi to me and fast disapear(never happend before),so i decided to put more presure and went to that lady with the store shirt and ask her if she can help me,she said she is busy(i didnt see no body around her)and she ask another employee if he is busy and he tried to be funny and said that he is always busy...anyway i ask him about a paint that im looking for and he is like "go there and help yourself, your color is complicated to find"(i was looking for sage color by the way)..i tried to be cool and keep looking my color and just gave up(there is million colors there),decided that im going, nobody even care or ask if i need help .and i walk to the cashier to buy batteries from behind the counter and the minute i come one cashier decided to totally ignore me and the other one just left,i was still patient and when she came back she was trying to smile and ask me what i need,i told her and she was looking for my batteries till i had behind me two customers waiting to check out and still the other cashier dont even care and playing like busy with something..the lady behind me start getting pissed,i decided just to buy the batteries not to get upset and promise my self that i will never come back AGAIN!!!! i guess they dont getting paid well and i think they should get commision for selling product to raise their motivation cause there is no any at all!!

I had rodent problems, meaning they were in my apartment. The owner of Pintchik sold me a product and gave me his home phone to call in the event it didn't work. I exterminated 9 in the 1st 24 hours. I sealed the holes and haven't seem them since! I call him just to tell him it was the best purchase EVER. No mess, they get zapped dropped into the trash and the thing keeps zapping. Never need to see or touch the dead rodent. I only shop their on principal now. They really look out for your best interest.
