I went there with my hubby and 2 yr Old son.
As soon as we enter, one man told lift was not working, and then in the buffet area they were not having baby high chairs and the managment was not at all friendly.

To the point, food was stale, and tasteless and overpriced too. We paid $37 for the time we were handling very active baby huh, and eating tasteless food in turns.
Better look for choices before going there.
Don't want to mark any star for it, but it's must.

We happened to visit Utsav right after christmas to meet up with friends and chose the hotel simply because of its convenience to Timesquare. We had 5 young kids in the party.
I was shocked to hear that despite having a hue dining area, they didn't carry any high chairs. The attendants were very curt in their attitude, no warmth or any sense of hospitality.
The food was even worse..for an exorbitant price that they charge for the lunch buffet, one would expect atleast a decent, well laden appetizer among multiple entree's. Its not that we reached close to the end of the buffet, but the dishes always seemed empty.
I've lived in the NY/NJ area for 10+ years and have visited this restaurant earlier..but the experience has never been so negative.
Would definitely consider my options before stepping into this restaurant again.

Utsav
I went here for my friends Birthday. We were about 20 people back in December 08.
The look was very nice and very diff from other Indian places. We were seated on time and started looking through menu. saw the typical menu that all places have and some other items.

The service was verry good as the waiter helped us choose items off the menu.
The food was Average-Good. I guess after eating at Dawat and Bukhara its hard for one to really like another place.
good time and had a nice birthday

I've eaten hundreds of curries in NYC and London. You can measure a good Indian by so many different clear factors... some of the most basic are papadam, naan and somosas...to start with. ALL of which were some of the most average and below average. Papadams were excessively toasted/burnt but of course they arrived in a nice basket and the chutney was in nice glassware, etc...

Then came the Chicken Vindaloo... yes, I like it very spicey... and it was...but it was just that...hot and no flavor. I've had many truly gorgeous vindaloos and madrases that were hot and absolutely exploding with flavor! The curry sauce was thin..not a nice thick oniony-based sauce but a thin watery one... Service... very polite but they barely checked on the table!

$10 for a beer, $6 for rice...$5 for naan... hey, I'm game with pricey curry but this is not a $40/person quality.... I can easily have pulled this from a small Indian side-street cafateria type place for $10, no questions... in fact, three nights ago I had one like that in an adventure to try a low-end...it was superior to this curry.

Nuff said... I haven't been this disappointed in a long while and haven't paid this much for so little.

Lots of glam though! HAHAHA.

Cons: Absolutely disappointing quality food...thin sauces, low-end flavor... poor naan, etc.

I'm a New Yorker and we thought an upscale Indian prix-fixe would be a nice pre-theater pick. Bad move. The food here is several steps below many of the take-out Indian and Pakistani joints throughout the city, - (Pakistani Tea House, Lahore, 5 Star Punjabi), and about 6x the price. The lamb and chicken dishes were both drowning in sauce, while the meat itself was dried out and not flavorful. Though the indigestion was certainly memorable.

The setting is pleasant enough, but does not warrant the price. While the waitstaff were dressed in suits, I found them condescending and the pacing was poor... they came by about 5 times before we were ready to order, and then took a very long time in bringing our food - which was especially suprising because I surmise it comes straight out of chafing dishes.

In order to find this restaurant, you have to know where it is. Tucked away from Times Square, it is perfect for all tourists looking for a sit down meal. My favorite time to go is for Sunday brunch where you can eat everything from their delicious Indian menu. The decor is beautiful and very elegant.

I was in NY on my own and arrived at the restaurant early evening. As an Indian, going to an Indian restaurant outside India, I have learned to have low expectations. At Ustav I had a great time. The staff were attentative without being obstrusive and made me feel very welcome. The food was wonderful. Will definately go there again.

Want to waste a lot of money on crappy Indian food in New York City? This is the place to go. You will find yourself in company with service personnel who would take unfinished plates from your table without your permission to make room for the next person. When you state that to the manager / owner, you will come to see the worst business person on planet - who doesn't believe his customers. Food itself is tasteless and the place is crowded if you are looking for quality and ambience.

Welcome to Utsav !! The worst Indian Restaurant in New York City.

I am a big fan of Indian Food and eat it frequently. I tried many different Indian Restaurants and this is one of the best. The food is exceptional, service excellent and atmosphere really nice. I've gone with both a small and large group. This is a great choice for both new and experienced people eating Indian Food.

Last night we had dinner here. The place stinks and the air is heavily loaded with unhygiene. Had it not been recommended by a friend i would have straight away walked out but i decided to give it a try hoping 4 the food to be good. My mistake as it turned out, for not relying on my instincts and my immensely vast exposure to Indian food in resaurants. We were 3 of us and went a-la-carte on the menu. The black dal was bland, the paneer kadhai tasteless, the chicken just plain boiled in broth. Breads were average and not what you want in restaurants. A waste of money & does no justice 2 the fabulous Indian Cuisine.

My husband and myself had dinner at Utsav before catching a Broadway show last week, and it was an excpetional restaurant for pre-theatre dinner. The show started at 8pm, and I'd made my reservations for 6pm. The dining room was still without many people when we had arrived, but by the time we left at 7:30pm, it was nearly full.

Both of us has their pre-fixe for $30 a piece and we both left stuffed. The waitstaff was attentive, polite, and brought us complimentary samples from the kitchen. We both choose the mulligatawny soup for our appetizer, I had the lamb pasanda and he had the chicken tikka masala for our entrees, and the mango mousse for dessert is the best I've tried yet. Our entrees were somewhat spicy, but not overpowering. It was definitely a good choice.

I have yet to visit Utsav and have an unsatisfactory experience in dining or service. I have dined here at least 1/2 dozen times and I feel like we have 2 or 3 individuals waiting on us every time we come. The managers are always sunny and friendly. I feel take care of and welcomed each time. I will admit at times the service is slow but I hate being rushed and I'd rather have to wave a few times than be asked "will there be anything else?" 10 times while I'm on my first course.

The grilled meats are always perfect. The vegetables are always tasty, spiced right and sumptuous. And let's not forget the cocktails. Hello!! Try their specials you will not be disappointed and have a nice little buzz. I discovered this place about 6 years ago. I will always be a dedicated patron. I love Indian food. Growing up in NYC you have access to so much diversity. I am glad Utsav is part of that spectrum. See you soon.

This is a regular stop for me before seeing a show. I've always been able to get in and out in plenty of time to see the show.

They just increased the price of the 3 course "Broadway Pre-Fix" to an almost unreasonable $28 per person. I enjoy the chicken korma so I usually order al a carte. With two appetizers, entrees, naan and lasses; dinner for two is usually under $75. I've even seen some coupons available in Playbill and other broadway related websites. In general, Utsav has a full menu with all the standard dishes you would expect at an Indian restaurant. while all the food is good, none of the dishes really stand out as spectacular.

Don't be turned off by the entrance through the smaller bar downstairs. In the dinning room upstairs, the decor and atmosphere is quite nice with a splash of romance.

We had dinner there tonight - $10 bread platter came out all stuck together and obviously microwaved. Our dinners were very delayed coming out - 2 tables seated after we had ordered received their food before we didl I had lamb (boti kebab) which was terribly dried out and overcooked. Husband had chand masala - nothing special at all - bland. We shared the basmati rice with vegetables (best part of the meal), had a cup of coffee to finish that was obviously old and bitter. Had water with dinner and the Total for 2 was $78 before tip. I wouldn't mind paying that for a really good meal but this was not even a decent meal. Maybe the lunch or pre-theater dinner is a better option but for a regular dinner it's a very poor choice. We eat Indian food all over and this was some of the worst we've encountered to date.

It was a commendable dinning experience. The specialty items were delectable particularly the Lasuni Gobhi had just the right hint of garlic with bursting flavor kinda' along the line so 'Desi-Chinese', the Veg Sheekh Kababs were as good as any non-veg kababs you might order. Among the veg entree' I suggest ordering the newly introduce Kele Ke Kofte and the Methi Matar Malai.....instead of the run of the mill veg. entree's these will not dissapoint you.....
Since I like to venture into the new and innovative...we ordered the Daab Chingri and Tandoori Murg roll are and 'out the world" experience....the usual run of the mill items on the menu are equally good....which I have tried int he past....however since Utsav is often times introducing new and delectable dishes I am alwyas in for a surprise when I dine there...the Ambiance and service are equally pleasing making your dining experience satisfactory.

i would start by thanking the chef at utsav for giving me good indian food . i mean that. last time i was there the restaurant was packed, the wait was long 30 minutes . we were a party of 6 if we were only 2 we could have got a table quicker. but it was worth the wait . as i said i thank the chef . the staff always treats you good in busy time the service is always effected . but good food always compensates for it. last time i was there had my favourite rackof lamb. always good. there was some sort of shrimp dish served in a coconut dont remember the name, very interesting. there cocktail list is very nice . there is a new cocktail with strawberreis guava juice mandarine vodka something else very refreshing , highly recommended . to end it . i always enjoy myself at utsav and hve great food and always walk out with a satisfied appetite

I visited Utsav y?day as a party of 4 for dinner. It was the worst experience in a restaurant I've had. We came to the restaurant & were told the wait would be 30 min--a LIE--we waited 1.5 hrs. I spent part of that time deciding what I was going to order from the paper menus in the hallway. When we were seated, the tablecloth had stains & crumbs left by the previous party & the waiter proceeded to set our silverware on it. When we requested a change of tablecloth, the waiter wistfully placed a white paper on top of it & set up our table in a hurried, un-neat fashion. Then, the manager came by our table about 10 min later to take our order--another wait. I ordered Kadai Paneer & asked him if they carried onion kulcha. He smiled subversively & pointed out that my dish came with rice. His reply meant that if I ordered onion kulcha, it would be a separate charge; insulting. We waited for about 30 min for the food to come. It was late, we were hungry, disappointed & tired from walking around NYC. We approached the rude mgr & told him that we were thinking of leaving to which he replied "Suit yourself, but the food is coming soon." This showed that he could care less whether we stayed or not. The food finally came & we ate in silence. The kadai paneer was too spicy for me but the navrattan korma & onion kulcha were good. We asked the rude mgr if we could speak to his mgr & he delightfully complied to bring him over. The mgr of the restaurant came over & apologized for our experience. It was odd that our rude mgr had no qualms about sending his boss over to us for us to complain about him. Were they related? As we were wrapping up our dinner & requested the check, the rude mgr asked us if we would have some kulfi & if "that would make us happy?" in a sarcastic tone. We were so put off by him, so we refused. We paid our outrageous check, not worth our dining experience, & ran out of there. Will not go here again!

I was at Utsav restaurant today and had a very unpleasant experience.

The manager was rude and unpleasant. The attitude was very bad. The waither missed me out while serving naan and never had the courtesy to come back when I asked them why waiter walked past my table, the manager was very rude and told that my table was already served and picked a piece of naan that was in my wife's plate, it was so disgusting that he did that and when we were going out, he came out and asked us if we came to eat or fight???? Who will go to an upscale restaurant to fight???? I am not concerned about poor service, but the attitude was just not right. My overall experience was extremely bad today. I am a resident of Brooklyn and have been to many upscale places in New York, the service can be poor but there is absolutely no need for someone to scold a customer. Your manager was literally scolding me, as if it is my fault that I came to eat in Utsav. He was talking to me as if it is my fault to come to his restaurant. And there was no need for him to follow us out of the restaurant and scold us???

I frequent indian restaurants a lot and this is the first time i went to utsav. The design of this restaurant is impressive compared to that of other indian restaurants. The service was slow at first but ended up being good at the end. The appetizers just weren't that inspiring and neither were most of our entr'ees. We did order the lamb which was great. They cook with just the right amount of spices so people who like spicy food will enjoy the after taste. Every other usual indian dish that we order turned out to be average. But then it came time for desert and that's where the surprise came. Their mango mousse was the best desert i've ever had at an indian restaurant and their kulfi was delicious. There are other restaurants that can deliver better tasting indian food but I'd recommend this restaurant to people for desert only.

Pros: dessert, ambience & dessert

Cons: average tasting indian food

.

I work around the corner and tried it with a colleague for the first time. The buffet had a nice selection. The food was average or above including some surprising tasty dishes. Service was also very good. I would go back.

I had tickets to see a broadway show, and went to Utsav for for their pre-theater menu. Lets just say Dinner far exceeded the show that night, and that is a testament to the quality and service at Utsav. You definitly have me as a repeat customer!!!!

not a chance in hell any indian person would consider this place worth the money they charge you. food is not good. service is just awful.
I am pretty sure owners write the good reviews found on this site. I went with a part of 4. north indians and south indians mixed. food is totally tasteless. no one in our group liked it. service was really awful. prices are EXORBITANT.
don't waste your money. plenty of good restaurants in this great city that will give you better bang for the buck.

Ok, so the servers wander around a little clueless, but there's more than enough servers for the crowd they get -- it's fine, you just have to make a small effort to get their attention. I care more about the food and ambience. Everything is excellent, the menu is quite extensive, and you eat with a view on both sides of the city. Try the Times Square cocktail -- ginger lemonade with vodka (also available without vodka.)

It took them 15 minutes to put water in our glasses.
It took them 25 minutes to bring our appetizer.
It took them ALMOST AN HOUR to bring out the entrees.
The lamb meat was under-cooked and EXTRMELY CHEWY.
They had scrapped the bottom of the vessel in which they make the rice -RESULT - WE HAD LARGE CHUNKS OF BURNT RICE IN OUR SERVING BOWL.
They never came back to refill our glasses again.
INCREDIBLY POOR SERVICE AN FOOD QUALITY AT EXORBITANT PRICES.

I went here and had the rudest service EVER. After the first appetizer came, the waiter came out and brought a second plate of the same first dish. We told him we'd ordered one of each and he went back. The manager who took our order comes to the table and proceeds to adamantly tell us that we did order 2 of the same dish. We told him politely that possibly he had heard us wrong, and if he wanted to charge us for it, then go ahead. He began arguing, saying its not about the money but you did order two. And we said, is it worth arguing about? We know we ordered one, if you want to charge us for the second dish, charge us. And he said okay and walked away. Any restaurant that treats its customers like this is not going to do well for long.

Let me start by saying that I eat Indian food at least once a week. I travel every week so its always in a different part of the country. I can honestly say that while some of the dishes I have had at other places I might have rated on an individual basis higher I have not enjoyed a total dining experience more. The service A+, The food A+, The ambiance, excellent for a romantic evening in NYC.

I visited Utsav in June, enjoying everything from the Utsavpolitan (mango and vodka) cocktail to the mango dessert. I had Machli Masala as an entree and it was wonderful; the fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was just the right combination of savory and spicy. The atmosphere is especially relaxed and comfortable; the window seats are great. The service was average, though I've experienced much worse. I would not hesitate to recommend the restaurant to friends and will return.

i'm shocked at the bad reviews others have posted for this place. i've been going to utsav for nearly 3 years and my only critique is that the service is sometimes lacking. otherwise, i highly recommend the lunch buffet (great value) -- quick, good and guaranteed to induce a serious food coma.

This place has got a great setting, nice dining room and lighting but they've totally missed the boat when it comes to service and food.
We were there to sample the menu for a reception and WE were ignored! No one even offered us water. When we finally did get a sampling of the menu, the food was cold and bland. The tandoori shrimp tasted spoiled. I think these guys are so taken by the appearance of their restaurant, they think attentive service and good food shouldn't matter. They're wrong and eventually this new fare will fizzle once word gets around.

The food was excellent - we have tried both the al a carte as well as the buffet - and regardless of the meal - each dish had a distinctive flavor and was not greasy at all.
The service too was very good - the staff were attentive.
I have recommended this restaurant to several of our friend and acquaintances and I have still to hear a negative review.

Utsav is IMHO the best Indian restaurant in New York. The food is extremely well prepared, and the service extremely attentive. I loved the appetizers, especially the Onam Kishti, and would also recommend the Lamb Pasanda. I have brought guests from India there, and they have been extremely impressed, and believe me, these guys are a tough lot.

I've been frequenting high-end Indian restaurants in NYC for about 10 years and Utsav is one of my all time favorites.

IMHO, Utsav is probably the only high end Indian restaurant left in the city which serves authentic indian food. Try the Lamb pasanda or the Mustard fish (to die for!) - Its also the only place in the city where you can get a real Rumali Roti.

I had read the service was substandard so was on the lookout - honestly, I didn't see it. The manager was ultra polite and came by twice to ensure that my clients and I were taken care of.

All in all - I think this place is great, but more importantly, my clients visiting from London were suitably impressed with the food. I can't wait to go back

An experience i would definitely like to forget. The food was average, the service sucks and its about time these people realize that they are one among many more good or better indian restaurants around.
Its is very disheartening for me to write this since i am an indian myself , but the truth is that their behaviour and attitude completely put me off.Well i feel if i had shown them my visiting card their service and behaviour would have been just the opposite.
i will never go there again. NEVER

I've been to many Indian Restaurants in manhattan and I've finally found one which I can rant and rave about. If anyone asks me for an Indian restaurant I always recommend Utsav because of their great tasting food. It really tastes like true Indian food and not a cheap comparison. I'd urge anyone to go and taste it for themselves. Not to mention the ambiance is tops... eating on the 2nd floor overlooking the busy NYC streets always makes it more enjoyable.

Our dining experience last night has left me sad to say the least. Not only was the service substandard, the staff kept looking at us surreptiously as if we were second class citizens. My feelings were confirmed when they delivered the check and two of the staff members kept (literally) peering over our shoulders to make sure we had the money. The check folder was promptly collected even before we took a few steps.
It is sad that people from ones own country would treat fellow citizens with such cold contempt. I hope the rightful authorities read this post.
