Worst Bar Ever. I would give this zero stars if I could.

You walk in and are overwhelmed by the smell of nail polish remover. Strange, because there is only 1 manicurist (that I could see).

Pros: nice enough bar tenders, ok prices, and the 1 cool guy who let me squeeze in up to the bar to get a drink

Cons: 1) the most God-awful, undancable, wierdest, worst music I have ever heard,
2) the constant revolving door of people coming in, seeing it sucked, and leaving, so no place to stand without getting shoved
3) one of the only TWO toilets had a broken flusher, so, if you chose to flush, you had to stick your hand inside the tank and lift the lever. G-R-O-S-S.

We went looking for a quirky, fun, offbeat bar with good music to dance to. Did a search on CitySearch and this looked like an interesting place. WRONG.

Quirky, and offbeat, yes. The decor and ambiance had potential to be really fun. Disco balls and trippy 60's decor.
Fun and danceable music NOOOOOOOOO.

The music was, what I can only describe, as 60's radical psychadelic Austin Powers on acid. Our group was all in our 30's and no one has ever heard anything like that before. But then, we dont take acid, so maybe it was us. The DJ was asked to play something, ANYTHING different, and said No.

We left after our whole party arrived and went across the street to a place with danceable music.

Suggestion: The website should post what type of music will be played on a given night !!!!!!!!

Definitely do not dress to impress. If you want to come to a bar straight from the gym, wearing a backpack, get high off nail polish fumes, and not dance, this is the place for you.

My friend's and I accidently stumbled upon this place the other night while trying to find a good, COVER FREE, bar to go to. We really thought it was a hair store until we saw people getting their IDs checked at the door. It has a cool crowd, a bunch of NYU students, and quirky music that grows on you. It was a bit crowded but this didn't bother me much.

Went here to hang with one of my friends from the band Eagles Of Death Metal. This place turned out to be horrible for all of us, but what really ruined it was this guy with long dreads who kept shoving everyone out of the way, then saying he worked there just as an altercation almost ensued each time. Then he'd go behind the bar and do shots. Nothing wrong with doing shots on the job but having a thug display a thug mentality at what I thought would've been a cool bar is enough to have me and any bands represented by my band management team to avoid this place at all costs. Stick with the lower east side cool spots, as opposed to Beauty Bar which is almost midtown east, like Stanton Public, Motor City or The Box to bring your bands or to hang out with bands. There's nothing else in the neighborhood of Beauty Bar if you get stuck there, but feel free to go there and get roughed up & almost get into a fight with thug security who can't handle their alcohol.

I love beauty bar, it is amazing. I just wanted to say that because I feel like they are getting bashed on this website. It was the first bar friends took me to when I moved to NY and it is still one of the best. Great music, fun people...and great bartenders.
Plus they have an awesome happy hour until 9 and usually a good dj/dance party in the back :)
Nothing but love here!

IF your visiting NYC , you should stop by this bar for a drink or two. Great bartenders (especially Lara) , great crowd (most of the time) and dancing in back. A mostly rockin crowd crowds in here for free manicures and the retro decor.

I had tried calling this place today to book a bachlorette party there. I needed to talk to them b/c I had several questions to ask. I called 3 times and got severe static on the phone. I went to their website to complain about it and this is the email that I received in return from MStewart@beautybar.

You win for most ridiculous email that we have
received in our thirteen unprofessional years of
successful business. Why is a technical problem with
the phone company an indication of a failure on our
part? At least our email works fine!

Yes, it would seem that their email does work fine, but not their customer service.

I went with my friends last night, and have to say that the bar tender was probably the rudest person I've encountered in years. She grabbed my friends' IDs (instead of asking for them) and when we commented, she threw an attitude and said that she refused to serve who she considered "S#x and the City wannabees" (her verbiage, not mine). I looked over to the dimly-lit area where there were manicures going on, and didn't see sufficient lighting, NOR DID I SEE ANY NAIL SANITARY EQUIPMENT! I saw the nails of a recently-manicured girl in the ladies' room, and it looked like a toddler painted her nails. We ended up going for manicures at a nearby salon, and had drinks at a bar where the people want to "know our names."

So I am new to New York and heard all this buzz about a manicure & Martini... It was time I got a new coat a paint, being that the old one had chipped thoroughly, so I thought what the hell I could go for a drink too. First of all the bartender wasn't even sure if the manicurist was going to show up. I sipped my martini waiting patiently chatting with the owner (they were both really nice). Rachel finally showed and got all set up. I was so excited- it has always been a dream of mine to combine two of my favorite rituals (booze and beauty). Rachel was very sweet and nice, we had a great conversation; unfortunately though she did such a horrible job on my nails that I will not be going back- first of all I didn't even get the hand massage that is part of a normal manicure, she didn't nip my cuticles, and there was polish nearly up to my knuckles. I was shocked especially since she said she was in beauty school. I mean honestly my 6 year old niece does a better job painting nails. Not to mention the fact that she layered on the base, polish, and top coat so thick that now, the next day, the polish is simply peeling off like a sticker- what a mess! The funny thing is that as we were getting started she asked me if I got regular manicures or if it was a once in a while type thing; this makes me wonder if she did such a crappy job because I told her I don't get them that often... doesn't make much sense but all I could figure.
The mani & martini for ten bucks you would think is a great deal but after tips for both the bar and manicurists I spent $17 on a well Martini and a manicure that didn't last through the night. There are several other places in the city that take this task a bit more seriously, I would recommend them as Beauty bar is simply a novelty.

This place is AMAZING and the manicure martini ROCKED!!! We had a bachelorette party for our friend there so we could do the "manicure/martini" special and the manicurists - both named Rachel - REALLY took care of us! Not only were they super cool and nice, but we all came out with great manicures with glitter and funky blue nails!! (they also have more "normal" colors too) The drinks were great - I highly recomment the PRELL. As for the lady below who didn't like her manicure, -- ours were great and Rachel (both of them) is really cool. Our manicures turned out great! We had a great time - highly recommended for a girly night out!

The bar has fun kitschy vibe to it, reminiscient of a 50's hair salon. Naturally this attracts a young NYU crowd who are barely legal drinking age. Remember folks the less you understand a topic the more it helps to not have your own opinion and just follow the flock of sheep, sorry I meant crowd. The atmosphere is pretty hip and the back room can be fun for dancing. However the place does get packed full on weekends. Drinks are good and fairly strong w/ moderate prices. Overall a fun place though a little toowell known for it;s own good.

Great idea...TERRIBLE manicurist!! Think her name was Rachel. Holy Sh**! Aside from the sloppy nail painting and the horrible filing job, the manicurist filed my skin open on FOUR fingers. I went in there with long & straight nails and came out being thankful that it was cold enough to wear gloves. To top it off, I couldn't even take the sloppy polish off because of all the cut from her filing.

What a unique idea for a bar! I really enjoyed this place, and had no idea before going in that it literally is a beauty parlor AND a bar...so fun, drinks were pretty good, but the best part of this place is the atmosphere...very fun and girly, but not limited to only the ladies. Good times!

i and my friends have been coming to beauty bar for Years now. it has always been our default, go-to hang out spot.

but this past friday was just stupid. there was some dancing going on in the back -- which was a total blast. too bad the doorman that night was taking his "power" too seriously. half of us couldn't get in. he claimed "private party" but that's just not the case because new people were coming in all the time.

since when did this cool bar get snotty? puh-lease. stop trying to be something you're not.

My friends and I went here for the manicure and mixed drink special last night and I would not go back for a second round. The drink was tasty (I dream of Jeannie Martini) but the manicure end of the deal was not worth it. First we had to wait for the manicurist to take a cigarette break and "check her voicemail." That would have been fine alone because obviously this is not a high end nail salon but then, once we are all seated around the table, she drops "oh and just so you guys know, there is a $5 gratuity for each manicure." Ok, so $15 for a drink and a manicure is not bad but advertising a $10 special is kind of slimy. The manicure was not even enjoyable as she was very rough and just wanted to move us out. If you're a germaphobe, not the place for you -- you rest your hands on a dirty rag and she uses another one to wipe the extra lotion off your hands. If you're a smacking-gum-loudly-aphobe, also not the place for you -- between each manicure she popped in another chunk of Bubblicious and continued snapping away. Next time, have your friend paint your nails. Then go to a different bar.

There's close to nothing to compare Beauty Bar to. The darkness, the pink walls, the incense burning to mask the smell of nailpolish, and the closed-off beauty salon in the back.... it's a special place indeed. Ladies, the happy hour special is awesome. Forget those manicure places, which are awkward and boring. This place gives you a drink and a manicure! There can be a wait, so get there early and pay to solidify your spot. While waiting, sit at one of the hairdryers, or sit at the bar and chat with the cool staff. I totally recommend this spot for after-work meetups. It's not so much a date place, but it's interesting to see who goes there.

I moved from LA over a year ago, and visiting the Beauty Bar there was a favorite thing to do with friends, so when I heard there was another one in NYC, I was happy and ready for a visit. Went with girlfriends at the end of a girls' night out on a Sunday night and we had a great time. I ordered a martini round for my friends and was pleasantly surprised when the bartender told me the total price that I owed. The music was also nice and the crowd a great mix and very friendly.

Lets start with the decor, well, its pretty much a beauty salon just after hours with many hair dryers along the wall. Has two bars very crowded I must say. Went this past Saturday where they had a 50's theme. Pretty clever and different. Even the crowd was different, mostly NYU students. But I had a nice time. The bartenders were pretty cool, the drinks inexpensive which is always a plus in NYC.

I love the idea of a combination beauty shop bar; the originality alone was enough to make it an interesting experience. It isn't the most up-to-date music, if that's what you're looking for, and it can be crowded at times, but this isn't a bad choice for something very low-key and unique.

First time i went there, waitress kept my $20 when i paid for a $9.00 drink (Steep!). It was my first drink of the night, she probably thought i trashed, when i notified her of her 'error' she insisted a communication error was the reason she kept the 20. When i generously gave her a tip anyway, she gave me attitude. Lame.

Besides the shifty and sometimes rude bartenders (which is a risk you run at any bar), its a good place with good music and djs, with friendly people. Not all of my visits there have been exceptionally great but the people make it the good bar that it is. You can usually walk out with at least one new friend.

Me and some friends were posting up here early on a weekday. We were drinking and talking sentimentaly about our childhood neighboorhoods in the east village. Somehow the bar tendress heard us and said "you guys look like your from long island not the village". That was obnoxious and so was the prodding of where we went to highschool . I told her to relax and she told us to leave. we were the only attractive heads in this rats nest and we were going to be meeting more people there until this urine huffer snapped at us! she was hideous and so was the crowd. Why would you attack your patrons (and yes we ARE from the vill) and make accusations? Why were you hawking our conversation in the first place?? try getting some clientele with semi-viewable faces in here and stop acting reatarded with your patrons.

Where else can you go for $10 drinks plus a manicure thrown in. You can get liquored up and dolled up at the same time! Terry the manicurist was completely cool and easy going. We went early for the happy hour so it was still empty-ish but we heard retro fun 80s music.

The place itself is nice enough, but the doormen have attitudes which don't belong at a place like this. Otherwise it has a cool ambiance. Bartenders are good.

okay. every single time, except for once, that i have entered into this place something unbelivably amazing happens. i would recommend sunday, bc almost no one goes and thursdays bc that is when i always go with my gurlfriend. the female bartender is friendly and makes the drinks strong. i have met the weirdest people at this place. i have caught myself coming home at 5am bc the drinks just keep on pouring and the entertainment don't stop. the girls at this bar are kinda lame, but the gentlemen always keep it interesting. also, i met my man here a few moons ago. so the guys are quality. saturdays are crowded, but the music is actually good on saturdays. also, the happy hour rocks..the drinks are just as strong.

Good bar on the "off hours." Cute theme. Drinks are so so so strong - WATCH OUT! Yikes. The place gets crowded on Saturday nights though, so go early. Strong drinks. Strong drinks. Woah.
