I started wiht the Bac 3 years ago on a three month membership and have loved everyday. With out any pressure I extended my membership and have never looked back. I use the club 4 times a week. Its great to go somewhere and have people know your name when you walk in the door. The downtown bac is the place to be if you feel like being in a awesome atmosphere and want to exercise with a bunch of other great people. No club is perfect but they have always tried to help me out anytime I needed help. I am sorry that some of you have had negative expieriences because the club is truly a great place to be with a lot of character.

I have been working out for most of my adult life and have memberships all across the U.S. The BAC Dowtown is one of the nicest clubs that I have ever been in. They have all new machines and really care about there members.

Simply put, the sales staff and managers at the BAC are scam artists and condescending.

I'll echo the thoughts of many unhappy customers below. These guys will do whatever it takes to get you to sign long term, to the point of harassing you until you just want them off your back.

Once they get your signature, they treat you like crap. Do not join here. If you do make sure you don't sign anything because their legal terms are terrible for the consumer.

Ratings_icons Good Equipment, Class Selection BUT Relentless, Uncaring Staff

Lisa E.

I had been a member of the Eastern Hills BAC for years, left the area for a while & returned to sign up for the 3 month plan again. The new renovations and locker rooms are very nice at the Eastern Hills, the equipment and classes are great (and the instructors are wonderful) but the sales staff will stalk you like vultures until you sign up for a one or two year plan. They come up & start speaking to you, even if you have headphones in or are in the middle of a phone call.

I will say, although annoying, they were all friendly, and most took the effort to remember my name & greet me each time I came in. One in particular spoke with me every single time, we chatted everyday for almost a month and established what I believed to be a small friendship. He talked me into a upgrading to a 12 month plan, and I'm not kidding you the MINUTE I signed that contract, he acted like he had never seen me before in his life! Never said hi, ignored me when I waved to him, and walked right past me. I know it sounds whiney and silly haha but seriously?! I couldn't believe it, and think it just goes to show, they are out for your money honey!

I've recently moved downtown & have started using the Delaware Ave BAC, which is in desperate need of some improvements. There are never towels to clean the machines and the staff here acts the complete opposite as the Eastern Hills - they have never approached me once, welcomed me, or even said hello when I dropped or picked up my card. I'm not looking for best friends or hot dates here, but come on! A little customer service, at the very least, would be HIGHLY appreciated for the money I'm paying.

Otherwise - I've been kicking butt & lost 20 lbs so far & the equipment does the trick. Everyone who posts on this site needs to understand everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone has had different experiences. It's so crazy to me the people that come on & bash other people for not rating the BAC with 5 stars!?

Where ever you end up- enjoy your workout!

PS. Where/is there even a stretching area in the Downtown BAC?

I agree with another poster that said some of the instructors at this location can be a little pushy and rude. Kim in Pilate's on Saturday is GREAT!!! I get a great work out and she's not obnoxious the way some can be. However, one of the spinning class instructors, one in particular, seems to be on a bit of a power trip. She was also a little unprofessional too, in my opinion, with some of her comments about her child's teacher. I mean, do we really want to hear that in a spinning class, Sharon, do we? Just teach the class for Heaven's sake and leave your personal life out of it thank you very much. I've heard great things about Ellen, and she's also been very friendly. The staff in the playroom is also very nice, and my son likes going there. It's only 1.50 per hour too! One thing I don't like is that you have to call ahead to make sure they have enough staff to cover childcare, only once was I turned down because of staffing issues. Also, there is no daycare on Sundays, which I'm disappointed about. I've asked them to extend Sunday hours, but it has yet to happen and it's been open over a year now.The facility is beautiful, but can be crowded during the late afternoon and early evening. I wish they would offer more early afternoon classes. Most start at 4:45 and can get quite packed. Shower facilities are great and they have a sauna that is quite relaxing. There are TVs on all the walls and certain machines have a personal TVs that you can listen to with a headset. As one other poster said, I don't think they are really in the business of fitness, more just making money, because after you sign up, they pretty much forget about you. I have also found this with other health clubs I've joined too. I also was upset when I first joined back in 2002 when I found out later, they gave discounts for city workers, which they neglected to mention until after my husband and I joined. Hmmm.. talk to people about what kind of deal they got and be prepared to walk away if you don't get what you want. It's almost like a car dealership. Trust me, they'll call you back!

EXCUSE ME. BUT i have been a member with the BAC for over 13 years. I lost 58lbs in my first year there and have maintained it for 12 years!! the bac offers more classes than any other gym in WNY. I am sick of reading ridiculous claims from members that are just bitter tight wades. Sure you can go to a different gym for half the money and you bet your bottom you will get half the classes, half the service, and half the results. Unless you have worked out all your life, you need someone coaching you through it. And so they call your friends and family?? SO WHAT? Everyone needs exercise in their lives!! You dont want your friends and family to get in good health? Seriously, do you people have nothing better to do with your time than sit around and write negative things about a gym that probably did everything they could to make sure you were satisfied. what more do you want for them? to do the exercise for you?? HOW ABOUT INSTEAD OF SITTING AT YOUR COMPUTER YOU GET OFF YOUR LAZY BUTT AND WORK OUT? THEN YOU WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT1 THE BAC IS FANTASTIC AND BY FAR THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CLUB IN BUFFALO!

Ratings_icons BAC's Dishonest Marketing Practices

Lou M.

My wife and I have been members of the BAC for over a year now. Recently the BAC had a $49.94 - 3 month promotion and we decided to have our daughter sign up for this. My daughter was under the impression that she was signed up for the $49.95 promo however, found her credit card was additionally charged $29.95 for the first month of a 12 month plan! She had no idea she was signed up for this 12 mo. plan. When I approached the staff about this all they could say was "Well, she signed the contract." I explained to them that there must've been a miscommunication and that she only wanted the 3 month promo. They didn't care because "she signed the contract". After asking my daughter about this she said that she repeatedly told the sales person that she only wanted the 3 mo. plan -she had no idea she signed up for the 12 mo plan. Long story short they duped her into the 12 mo plan. Now it didn't matter that her parents were long standing members who recommended their daughter and a number of other people to join the BAC. We thought it was a reputable business, but they are not! The almighty dollar is the bottom line there. I guess they figure it was more important to cheat a young woman of her money rather than keep members like my wife and me. I will not renew my membership this year and my wife will not renew hers. I will also never recommend anyone to go there. I will tell them to go elsewhere because of the BAC dishonest marketing practices.

I joined last March when it first opened. They definitely misrepresented the fees I had to pay. I originally asked for the 3 month-$99 promotion and was talked into signing a year membership. However, the amount I was charged was more than we had discussed. When I questioned that fee when it appeared on my Mastercard I was told that I must've misunderstood and the girl who signed me up was no longer available (she had been loaned to the Colvin facility to handle the influx of new customers). I used the facilities for a year, and enjoyed working out, but will not rejoin. First-there are no signs posted to tell people to clean the machines after they've used them. When asked, I was told they couldn't post any signs-it was against the law?! Why people wouldn't automatically wipe down a machine after sweating all over it was beyond me. And the towels that the BAC supplied to do so were scummy and never replenished-so you'd be wiping down your machine with a dirty towel anyway. I was also disappointed in the selection of TV programs they had to view on the overhead TVs while excerising. Most of the time they'd have CNN, hockey or football on. I thought this was the BAC for WOMEN...what's wrong with Lifetime, USA or HGTV? I could've stayed home and watched sports with my husband.

Ratings_icons Downtown BAC is the Best in Buffalo

I think that the downtown bac is by far the best club in Buffalo. I have been a happy member for more 20 years. Im ashamed that you anonymous members would not even have the GUTS to write your own name. You must be just an overall negative person will nothing better to do then to make false accusations about a beautiful club that I have seen grown tremendously over the years.
First, I have never seen the club dirty. You have to understand, the building is over 90 years old. Management has done a great job at using that to its advantage. The club has more character to it then any club I have ever been a member to. I have been a member to various club in the area and without a doubt, this is the finest establishment money can buy. They are constantly purchasing new machines, and are also aggressive with getting the newest aerobic classes that people want.
You anonymous members are pitiful simply because you want everything to perfection but you never have the GUTS to say anything to management. As a member, I talk to you people and I laugh. You are one of those $99 for 3 month members that are simply lazy and dont exercise and decide to take it out on the club because you have absolutely no self drive or motivation. Write your name you wimp! I walk in the club at least 3-4 times a week and never do I not get greeted with a smile. These are usually young kids that are working the front desk and always running around because they are simply busy doing work. So I apologize for them for not praising you every time anonymous walks in the door.
The downtown bac is the place to be if you feel like being in a professional atmosphere and want to exercise for a fraction of the cost. I will be honest, I have had issues in the past, but I have approached management and they seemed to fix the problem or at least they will take the time to tell me why they do not do it. This club has been around for longer then any other club in the city. That does not happen if you really do not care about your members. This club does and I am sure that it will always do. Take my advise, do not listen to the negative remarks, they are simply untrue.

I have been a member of the BAC since 1992. It helped me get thru a very tough time in my life and most importantly helped me lose over 100 pounds, however, it was not because of their instructors or trainers it was because I was determined to do it. The instructors looked at me as an over weight person that was going to quit after a month, well I didn't. Over the years I have seen where they are more interested in making money as opposed to making sure that the member was happy. Every year when it comes to renewing my membership, I get a phone call and a postcard. That is fine, however, every year it is a month earlier than the year before. I always keep track of when I need to renew my membership because what they try and do is really make it that you renew a month earlier than you are supposed to, so in reality, you only get an 11 month membership, but pay for 12. I have a membership that renews at the same rate each year, $299 and I use the gym often, so really they don't make much money off of me, but when the employee tells me that if I don't renew right away, I will lose my $299 renewal rate and be required to pay the higher renewal rate. I don't like to be threatened, especially since I have been a member in good standing for so many years. Beware of your renewal and keep your contract handy. The downtown club has made many changes over the years, but one thing that they truly lack is in the area of good classes. It is the same instructor all the time. People want variety and you do not offer it at the downtown location. As a member, I shouldn't have to drive all over the place to take a class with a different instructor or a good instructor. Saturday's you don't open until 9:00 am and then you are closed on Sunday from Memorial Day until after Labor Day. It would be nice to have better hours on the week-ends. I live in the city and I really don't feel like driving to Amherst or Orchard Park to get a work-out in. The weight room is crazy in the evening, unless you are a muscle head, forget it. Whoever designed the aerobics room had no idea what they were doing, half of it is glass and the other half is mirrored. So anytime you do take a class everyone is crammed to one side of the room so that they can see in the mirror and the mirrors don't even go to the floor, so you can't see yourself if you are doing abs, yoga or Pilates.Last but not least, it would be nice if there was a level of professionalism from the staff when you walk in. Half the time they are talking with their friends and don't even acknowledge you or notice that you get towel service, I always have to ask for my towel. I was working out at a club in LosAngeles and let me tell you how nice it was to be greeted with a smile and NOT an attitude when I walked through the doors. I was not treated any differently than a member, it truly was a pleasant experience. That is how every member of the BAC should be treated and they aren't. You should send out a survey to the membership asking what you, as owners could do, to improve the experience of the members, because people do have a choice as to where they work-out, and each day there are more choices popping up. Rick, Bob and Rick, you really need to look at your staff and the services that you offer and ask yourself, 'are we doing all that we can to serve our members to the best of our ability?' I would have to say at this point, you are not. Clean up the downtown club, get some people in there that will make a difference and if you have to pay them more money than do it, because in the end if you don't, you will lose out anyway. I know for you guys it is about the money, but for me it is about my work-out and where I am going to feel most comfortable and appreciated as a valued customer. I am not the only member that feels this way, there are many frustrated people out there.

Its obvious that the negative remarks that our said about this wonderful club are being spread from a downtown Bacs competitor. Whoever this is, unfortunately cannot either afford or have enough creative ability to formulate a positive marketing message but would rather say all negative and incorrect things about this premier health club in WNY. The do have NEW equipment. Ever time I walk into the club there seems to be some machines that I have never seen before. The pool is HUGE. It has 5 lanes and it has to be at least 30 yards long. I am profession biker and I enjoy there brand new spinning bikes in which I never have a hard time finding one because there is at least 60 to chose from. I have been with one of the clubs personal trainers for about 5 months now and he trains me three times a week at 6am and I have never felt better. The rates are great too! I am not employed by the company, nor do I have a personal relationship with anybody there, but I can say that this company is top notch. You must check this club out. By the way, they also do validate parking at all convenient hours. If you would like to work out at a facility that has a bit of trendiness to it, a wide variety of judges and lawyers and other young and old downtown professionals, this club is for you!

I am wondering... does anyone else find the Surgeon Generals' claim that"not exercising is equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day" preposterous? I am contacting the surgeon generals' office....but, I really think that I am not going to get lung cancer if I don't exercise. Do we really need this kind of scare tactic in advertising, especially at the beginning of the new year....just a few vulnerable people out there.

I joined the BAC Downtown location in 2006. Needless to say, I've been disappointed. Price: The "Fitness Prime" membership requires a $99 "initiation fee, then $33/month for first 12mo. There is a fee to renew, and the monthly rate increases unless you purchase the "preferred membership" upfront. Facilities: Not climate controlled (read: no A/C) during summer; it gets extremely warm and dry in the gym rooms. Locker rooms are not as clean as other gyms I've been to. Peak hours it is impossible to find a "good" open treadmill, bike, or elliptical (some machines are older and outdated). Pool is small and can be crowded at times. The stairs can be slippery. Towels for wiping machines are not well stocked. Service: Printing a free visit certificate online prompts immediate and unrelenting phone calls from their sales staff. A short tour of the facilities is followed by a hard sell strategy that will certainly make you uncomfortable. Short of death or dismemberment, or moving further than 25 miles from any of the BAC's multiple locations, it is impossible to get out of your contract- even if you are dissatisfied. Parking/Hours: They validate parking in the ramp across the street, but only during non-peak hours. Street parking is metered and often unavailable. Hours are not early enough-often the 6am shift arrives late (especially during winter), which delays your workout and morning schedule. Weekends feature no early morning hours. General impressions: Free-weight and nautilus machine area can be intimidating. This is not your average neighborhood gym with average people working out. Unless you live downtown within walking distance, find another gym. There are PLENTY of other gyms that don't require contracts and initiation fees, or direct debit from your accounts. It all comes down to whether you really want to drive downtown, find parking, walk a block or two, wait for a broken elevator, wait for machines, and still be overcharged and unsatisfied.

Ratings_icons BEWARE

I joined the BAC 5 days ago feeling excited about using exercise, yoga, and a personal trainer to help reduce stress. My initial appointment went well. However, it went downhill after that.

My trainer for my second appointment did not show up. He sent what looked like a high school kid as a replacement. The kid was not familiar with the equipment. He only showed me 5 pieces of the Nautilus equipment and I had to show him how to make adjustments on at least two of them. He didn't coach me on how to use the equipment properly or how to pick a starting weight.

On the third appointment, the trainer again did not show up nor did he provide a replacement. So, I asked for my money back totalling over $1100 required to initiate the program. I was told that I had to let them know three days after signing up and it had been five days.

I was also personally verbally attacked by the facilities coach. I really feel taken advantage of in this situation. Don't make the same mistake as me!

I was a member of the Downtown BAC for 2 years & was not at all impressed. I have belonged to several gyms over the past few years; however, I joined the BAC due to its location. After doing some shopping around, I found the BAC to be the only gym in the area that offered classes and had multiple locations. Unfortunately, the Downtown location was the only one I could use without a 30 min. commute.

The facility and the equipment are extremely outdated to say the least (spinning bikes, etc). The parking situation is sub-par, which happens in the city; however, the BAC only validates ramp tickets between certain hours, so for teachers who are off during the summer and don't care to work out at the crack of dawn, you're paying for your gym membership as well as parking, which can get expensive if you work out every day. And the only personal trainer I ever saw there in the early a.m. was a guy who looked like he was out late the night before, who was usually working with multiple clients & paying little attention to their form, etc as they worked out - his fee was hefty, too. Finally, the classes offered at this location leave a lot to be desired. There isn't much variety - not so much as a single step aerobics class among them.

It's as if this location is being blatantly neglected to let the riffraff work out in a total dump while the BAC pours millions into the suburban locations. What they seem to be forgetting is the people working out Downtown are paying the same membership fees as those who live closer to the updated clubs, so maybe the BAC should consider updating the Downtown location& offering those members just as much for their money.

I have been a BAC member since early 2000s. I have been to all of the clubs, including the womans locations and some of the RACs. They all are great. I have been known to go to the gym 6 to 7 days a week. I would do multiple classes a night. It is such a great workout, about a dozen of us followed our favorite instructor from French Rd to Colvin when it opened. The same people follow her to Evans on Sunday mornings for the best step class in WNY! Each club has more than enough classes, anyone can find one that works for them. From spinning with Christine at French Rd to Step and Kardio Kick with Ellen at Colvin/Eggert, there is something for everyone. The instructors are energetic, people are friendly and the classes are amazing. They do have classes for all levels, so you have to be careful you attend one that is at your level, novice to advanced. Its sad but I currently attend school out of state. I can honestly say I have not found the same quality in the 'national' gym I joined there. I have been known to make special weekend trips home to see family and go to the BAC!

this club was the biggest rip off ever...signing up I thought I was getting good service, come to find out I was tricked into buying a 12-month membership...I told the guy i only wanted a 3 month but he told me there was only the two types of 12 month memberships. I was tricked! then to make matters worse, about 2 weeks later, not only do I find out the 3 month was available, but it was being advertised for only $49! I was furious, I tried to talk to the manager, he did nothing. They do indeed harass you to tell friends and family, the only thing i'll be telling people is to STAY AWAY unless you want to get ripped off for over $600 a year...biggest mistake ive made and now im stuck...sucks for me...others beware! They do have nice facilities but its nothing you can't find anywhere else for a fraction of the cost and no harassment whatsoever!

I could not disagree more with that previous negative review done by anonymous. I have been a member for more than 25 years and I feel that the Downtown BAC has made tremendous strides over the past few years. The Managing Partner in club is extremely aggressive with making sure that the club always has the finest cardio and weight equipment, new classes, and Jeremy is always making sure the club is held to high standards regarding cleanliness. As a member, I have has minor issues in the past, but instead of hiding behind a computer, I confront management and they take care of the problem immediately.
If you want to join the premier health club in wny, the BAC is your best option. All great 7 locations offer very similar amenities with great staff members that put there members first. Come check it out!

I have been going to this facility for over 15 years. Back in the early 1990's it was fairly well run. The owner, Rick, often showed up and the staff toed the line. The staff that ran the day-to-day operations was professional and friendly. I don't know if the proliferation of so many branches in the suburbs has anything to do with the decline in quality, but I would guess it does.

The place is not clean. The staff person in charge of keeping the place clean and in working order is at a loss as to how to do it, and apparently the management doesn't care enough to get a competent person in there. The cleaners come and go at a rapid pace, but they work at a snail's pace. It's laughable.

The staff lacks PR skills and takes little interest in the patrons. After 17 years I will be going elsewhere.

I think there is an excellent array of machines. There are some fantastic instructors for some of the classes.. Yoga in particular at NF BLVD. and pilates at Colvin. HOwever, the personal trainers are not very knowledgeable. Do not know much about osteoporosis, including restrictions concerning this (ie. no spinal flexion or twisting).

During peak hours at BAC for women..at Colvin Eggert, towels are not replenished frequently enough and are wet and soiled with sweat. Yuck! I was actually told I would have to pay 50 cents for a clean towel when I asked at the front desk for one. They did give me one when I explained the problem, but they did not replace the dirty towels in the machine area..
I do not like repeatedly being asked if I know anyone else who would like to join. The one time I did have a question re: having my daughter join, I couldn't get anyone to talk to me! Staff are not always friendly at this location, and I have been treated rudely on a couple of occasions.

they do not leave you alone here. they always want you to give them the names of family and friends so they can call and harass them to join. the "trainers" are educated for 1 day on how to use the weight machines, and these are the same people who decide what kind of weight training program new signups are to have! these trainers know nothing about exercise - do not trust them. the trainers do not need any college degree in sports exercise, in fact, one of the trainers told me the janitors are paid higher than the trainers. the people selling packages in the office are not only harassing but a few smell like smoke all the time! what a turn off. when i first joined in 2001 there were some good teachers who taught kickboxing, bellydance, weight training and conditioning, but they all left. the new teachers they have now are crazy (always shouting) and annoying - NOT MOTIVATING. the precors (elliptical) at my BAC have a personal tv, which is the only reason i am a member when home for the summer. No staff members have remained since i first joined in 2001, and very few of the original teachers are around. bac is not good business and it's ovbious why. the main clientelle is overweight 40 somethings who use their free three month insurance sponsored membership and never return.

This is a great gym to work out. I do a lot of cardio work and weight lifting since I moved to buffalo. the people there are nice and help you if you need any. they have a huge selection of equipment. the price is above average but i guess its worth it.

Ratings_icons Decent option with several locations

The Buffalo Athletic Club overall is a quality gym. They have several locations in the area which a plus. In my opinion they are slightly pricier than other local competitors but the gym has a wide selection of machines, weights, and free classes. The only problem with the classes is the instructors seem more novice and unprofessional than their competitors. A couple times the instructors didnt even show up for the hip hop class I planned on attending. Stay away from the classes and this place is overall satisfactory.

PROS: Several locations, variety of machines.
CONS: Novice class instructors

Ratings_icons Lots of choices for class, weights or cardio

The Buffalo Athletic Club is a really great local gym. The best part is that there are two locations that are just for women. They offer several classes including aerobics, step, pilates, yoga and "get on the ball." The instructors are well qualified. I never have to wait for equipment. The class do get full. The only con is that they are constantly trying to sell to you.
