I am so glad I stumbled upon Knitting 321 two years ago. I am also surprised by the negative reviews regarding the shop as I have found it to be a very special place, where Valeria (the owner) is very helpful, patient and honest.

I'm a beginner knitter. My friend, who is a great knitter recommended me to start with Valeria at Knitting 321. I have to tell you that Valeria turned out to be the most patient and attentive instructor. I'm not an easy learner and I feel

Stay away! I bought $100.00 worth of yarn in early August. As a beginner I asked the owner if she'd help me out with my baby blanket if I had a problem. She told me to come in any time and she'd be glad to help out. Well, I'm almost

I starting knitting after taking lessons there. The owner was rather critical but I thought it was just because I was awkward learning. She was ok as long as I was paying for her time but if I just came in with a problem she was downright mean. There seems to be a small coterie of knitters who are there but newcomers are not welcome.
The bottom line is nobody ever talked to me the way she did and it occurred over and over again. I finally got it. It wasn't me. It was her. That's just the way she is. Knitting is supposed to be a nice friendly thing to be doing. I've gone elsewhere. To Annie's, actually, even though it's not as close.

The yarn selection is diverse, but some balls look as if they have been sitting on the shelf for years. A few are even sun bleached. The patterns and books are in disarray, making it impossible to see the collection without sorting through all the shelves. The owner did offer help but seemed disinterested that I was there -- the customer knitting at the table was friendlier. I would have considered returning when I had a more specific project in mind, as the owner seems very knowledgeable, except for the last part of my shopping experience. Silly me, I was not paying attention when she rang up my purchases. She overcharged me for a ball of yarn by ten dollars! Why do this? This really turned my experience sour, and I won't go out of my way to return. I will say that the two customers in the shop seemed to be loyal regulars.

Pros: They carry some hard to find yarns

Cons: Store is a bit messy, business seems disorganized

When I decided to pick up knitting again after a many years I was thrilled to discover a knit shop within blocks of my new upper east side coop. Imagine my disappointment to find on my first visit an almost non-existent desire on the owner/salespersons part to actually assist in any way. I too experienced either being treated with rudeness and being discounted for any knitting experience I may possess. My 2nd, 3rd and 4th visits (guess I'm just a sucker for punishment) were greeted with being totally ignored, even when there were no other customers in the shop. You would think in these times of recession every customer counts and service is ever more important but I guess I'm wrong. Despite the convenience I have taken my business elswhere never to return.

Cons: Some things don't change for the better

I've shopped here for appx.3 to 4 years. They have a quite a large selection of yarns to choose from. It's a friendly environment and the owner and staff are very helpful.

I was out walking with my grandson and tried to go into the shop . There was a rather difficult stairway to descend and I knew I could not manage the stroller and baby to go into the store. I used my cell phone and told the person who answered that I was right outside but did not know how I could manage the stairs..I was told that I just would have to come down if I wanted to shop. How do they expect people who are handicapped or with small children to enter..This certainly did not make for a user friendly atmosphere and I know I will never attempt to shop there.

At first, this shop seems like the best knitting store around. Not too crowded, good selection, low cost of lessons. However, my experience has really been tainted by the quality of service received over time. If you are an experienced knitter, requiring little assistance on projects, then this is the place for you. If you are a beginner or intermediate knitter, I would look elsewhere. The women who run the shop are like Jeckyl and Hyde, one day they are wonderful helpers, the next they are on the attack! Not a relaxing experience, and I often leave feeling inadequate and stressed. Not what one would expect from a knitting shop! The women sell and create interesting patterns. Just don't go here expecting to receive kind attention. On my final visit, one of the women was downright mean. I won't be back, and overall I do not recommend this store.

Knitting 321 is not as awesome as some of the other Manhattan knit shops but they hold there own. A decent selection coupled with expert advice makes this a more than adequate stop for the advanced or starting out knitter.

Every yarn I've purchased and project I've completed, with the guidance from Knitting 321, has made me feel as if I'm wearning a piece of art. The yarns and patterns are beautiful. A visit to this charming knittery is well worth the trip. Tuesday night is their late night, for us folk who work days. I try to visit whenever I need inspiration. I'm also glad I took my knitting lessons there. It's a skill I'll have for a lifetime.

I've really tried to go to this store, but it is simply NEVER open. I was so close once, it was 4:55 on a friday and I'd gotten out of work early, but as soon as I got near the door, someone ran over and politely but firmly kicked me out. Then they went on vacation for 2 weeks. *sigh*
I give up.
