Manager: That'll be $16.23
Me: Does that include the Cooper Union discount?
Manager: You have to tell me before the transaction begins that you are from Cooper Union.
Me: That's why I put my i.d. on the counter with the book. (Pointing to the i.d.)
Manager: Well, I don't look to see what anyone puts on the counter.
Me: (Silent)
Manager: I'll give you the discount this time, but next time you'll be SOL.
Me: That's fine.
Manager: It's more than fine, I did you a favor, and now you can say "thanks." It'll be $13.11
Me: (Silent. Hand the manager my card.)
Manager: (Hands me the receipt.)
Me: (Sign the receipt. Start to walk out with the book.)
Manager: (Voice raised) When someone does you a favor, the polite thing to do is thank them.
Me: (Walking back.) I'm not going to say "thank you."
Manager: The polite thing to do is say "thank you."
Me: I'm not going to argue with you about this. . .
Manager: You're the one who walked back in.
Me: You know why I didn't say "thank you."
Manager: No, I don't.
Me: Yes, you do. You know how you are.
Manager: How am I?
Me: You know how you are. (Walking out) You're incredibly rude.

This East Village bookstore is a great place to browse for vintage and first-edition books, along with the more popular and affordable classics and new releases. The staff is extremely helpful in locating and learning about a particular writer or genre. It sits just down the street from the massive Strand bookstore, but its charms and selection put it in a class by itself.

PROS: Good selection, helpful staff
CONS:

Not only do they have a great selection, and a spacious, quiet store--they do great deals on used books for school. My professor had them order all of the books we were going to use for the semester in that class, and they personally assembled enough sets of used copies for the class. We all got great deals without any hassle.

There's nothing like being downtown and browsing through a great little bookshop such as this one. It has a ton in the way of theatre books, and those old fashioned latters to reach up high. I love it there.

Shakespeare & Company is a great place to spend part of your lunch hour. I love browsing through all of the beautiful coffee table books they've got, especially the ones from exotic places and imagine taking a trip to one of those locations one day. They have some hard to find books and if they don't have it they will do their best to obtain it for you. The staff here is great - they won't rush you along, but will spend as much time with you as needed to be sure you've found all the books you're looking for. They are a bit pricier than other well known national chains, but the customer service is definitely worth it.

Even though it's a chain, Shakespeare and Company stores are still small, intimate, and filled with book-lovers. Store has wide selection for one so small, and the staff can find any more for you, and order it if they don't have it. Great place overall.
