We'll confess, we had our first date at Cortina and have been back a few times including to celebrate anniversaries.

The food is good, serviceable Northern Italian served in a very pretty setting. When the weather is nice, try to get the round table by the open windows. It gives you the breeze and feeling of sitting in the outdoor cafe while keeping the 2nd Avenue noise down. But our romantic haze notwithstanding, the service here leaves something to be desired and the owner needs a management class. There only ever seems to be one waitress and although she does well early in the evening, as the place fills it becomes impossible to get her attention. The owner is effusively friendly as long as you're sitting down to a meal. If you're only starting with drinks or perhaps some coffee and cake however, he can be downright rude and doesn't realize that you could enjoy yourself and be back tomorrow for dinner.

Cons: Slow service

I love this restaurant. I don't remember much about it since it's been probably about a year since I last went. I remember that I had the pesce spana and it was the most amzing pesce spana I ever had. Also I remember feeling young and underdressed. The food is very good here. I highly recommend it.

Pros: food,service

This may have been one of the worst NY restaurant experiences imaginable.
Food was mediocre. Owner was less than accommodating, and verging on rude.
Antipasto was served with no salad or bread-just cheap cold cuts. Wait staff was oblivious to any request.
Wine list lacked any details of vintage.
Really bad experience.
Stay away.

This place has really, really good food and the price is very, very reasonable. I live in the area and this is where we would go when friends come into town or when we just want good Italian food.

Cortina is an good restaurant. I live around the corner and have my choice of dozens (literally, dozens) of Italian restaurants within a few blocks of my apartment but I always come back to Cortina -- it's the best. The restaurant is never crowded and I haven't once needed to call for a reservation. The service is extremely prompt and I find that my water glass is always full (which, as someone who used to be a waiter/busboy, is a big deal to me). Even the rolls that servers bring to the table to eat while one waits for food to come out are the most delicious I have ever had -- they are warm and soft and practically melt in your mouth (no butter or olive oil needed, I promise)... occasionally they can be hard/stale though. The wine selection is definitely more than adequate. In my opinion their salads are good but I find the Cortina Salad (chopped warm vegetables tossed in romaine lettuce with a lemon vinagrette dressing - $7) is the definitely best starter. But what sets Cortina apart is its sauce. The simple red pasta sauce that is served with many dishes is some of the best I have ever had in my life -- probably my favorite in NYC. In my opinion the best dish there is the Chicken Parmagiana, which includes a large piece of chicken breast (breaded and fried perfectly with plenty of cheese), and a huge portion of pasta in their delectable sauce. It's a simple dish but Cortina does it incredibly well and for a great price ($12). I am never able to finish my Cortina Salad and Chicken Parmagiana but I bring home what I can't eat and it's always good the next day also. Like I said, I think this is a solid Italian restaurant in the UES and you should not miss an opportunity to check it out. Standard food, not pricey, good service, and low-key. It won't knock your socks off, but it hits the spot when I want a hearty order of chicken parm.

Cons: Lots of Elderly Diners

I went with a very large group, who was also loud, but the the staff was really understanding and friendly about it. And I don't think any of the other patrons complained about us, or at least we didn't receive any dirty looks. The staff was a little slow though, and we waited a really long time for our food. We ordered a variety of dishes, and I have to admit, the Homemade pasta, especially the raviolis were great. The regular pasta dishes - not so great. It was flavorless, the sauce bland, and i wasn't too happy with it. But when my friends took pity on me and gave me some ravioli, i really enjoyed it. Especially the porcini raviloi. The appetizers were also great. Very flavorful and tasty.
So, it's your typical italian, nothing exciting, but if you go, get the homemade pasta dishes.

In an area where there are so many great restaurants there is no excuse for the poor service and rough treatment that I received at this restaurant. I tried to order Broccoli Rabe with Orchiette, and was told no, there was no broccoli rabe. I have never heard such a thing, worse yet I wasn't offered an appology or a substitution within the dish and the waiter/manager gave me an attitude when I said I needed another minute to decide. I will never go back here again.

My husband and I have been to Cortina several times since moving to this neighborhood. We have enjoyed the consistently good food, pleasant atmosphere, and friendly service. The chicken parm is great! This place is a good neighborhood standby.

The grilled portabella appetizer was cold, the calamari had a piece of plastic in it, the swordfish (the special) was overcooked and tasteless. The salad had wilted bits in it and the service was confused and slow. The owner/manager was arrogant. Too bad - it could be fabulous with location and decor.

I have been eating at Cortina for at least 10 years, and have consistantly been delighted with the quality of the food and service. Chef Richard is always eager to please, and will be happy make something special 'off the menu' if you ask. My mother-in-law has special needs, and Richard always sees to it that her food is special too! We have had many family parties there, and the staff has made each occassion special. A meal there will certainly not disappoint.

I have passed Cortina several times, having lived near it for 10 years. Poor reviews kept me away. Against my better judgment , I decided to try it with a few visiting friends. In brief, the waitstaff was rude and condescending and my friends and I were a bit embarrassed. We sat down for drinks at around 10PM with the possibility of cappuccinos and desert. Instead of being smart business people and treating us as paying customers, we were told they do not serve drinks, only food (only food?). We promplty left and took our business elsewhere and had a lovely time.

at cortina a dish that is probably familiar to anyone who favors Italian cuisine, chicken parmigiana is an extraordinary eating experience, the chicken is sliced thin and tender, lightly encrusted in seasoned bread crumb and moistened by a lirely marinara sauce, a portion of expertly cooked pasta completes our desevedly popular dish.

Pros: great food, nice out side cafe, good wine list

Cortina's presentation of wild striped bass is both aye catching and taste tempting, a fillet of bass a top the grilled zucchini green and red pepper, sliced onions and mushrooms was most appealing, The taste, delicate and flavorful, was even more satisfying. This is an unusually gratifying meal. Don't forget to order the cheesecake, it is the best in town.

i ordered a fair sampling of the menu--i was with three people and we chose 2 appetizers, 3 entrees and 2 desserts. the salads were by far sub-par, tasteless and wilting, and the only redeeming pasta dish was the ravioli. it doesn't matter that the ice cream was ok--go to a ice cream shop if you're just looking for dessert.
basically, this place is a throw-away. don't bother.

After reading a review here, we decided to go. While the place was nice enough to look at, the owner/or manager was totally Unfriendly, Obnoxious, Pretentious, Aloof, Condescending. The only way we were able to order was to hand signal the manager. He never stopped at the table to ask us if we needed anything. We waited over an hour for our main courses, and there were only six table occupies in the whole place. Never again.

My husband and I live in the area and have walked by this quaint Italian restaurant many times. Our first experience actually eating there was great! It was a weeknight and we were seated immediately- the breadsticks on the table and warm rolls with butter were fabulous, we had a nice bottle of red wine which added to the dimly-lit romance of the place. We had a chicken dish and some pasta and both entrees were yummy. My only regret was the dessert- avoid the crepes and stick with the ice cream. All in all a sweet little place for good Italian food.

I have lived on the upper east side all my life, and this restaurant has been on the area since Ronald Reagan was president. Odd thing I had never been there. Went with a few friends last week and I was surprised by the good food.Portions are nice and go according with the prices they charge. The wait staff is not "top of the line" but they battle, and the result is not something you can point your finger as a "bad thing"(we left a 20% tip).

I love my desserts. And discovered that Chocolate Mousse at Cortina is made by hand by the Owner! Smooth, creamy fresh, gentle and sexy. Opening the senses to what only the imagination can allow to follow. Absolutely incredible. Like water for chocolate.

Seduced by the food, then overcome by the desserts, I return again and again to this sweet little neighborhood gem. After the sensual pleasure of leisurely homemade tuscan entrees...the desserts capture my imagination. Freshly made by the artful hand of the chef/owner. I can only suggest what comes to mind.

Chocolate Mousse, cloudlike and sexy.
Mango Sorbet, it's lightness tastes better to me than the real mangoes it comes from.
Tiramisu, that melts slowly across your mind.
Ice cream, simply smoothly elegant.
Crepes, recreating my romantic memories of crepes experienced from vendor's carts on the streets of Paris.

Sublime indiscretion. A palette for the senses. Art in food.

I recently had dinner here with my girlfriend. We were seated by a drafty window and wanted a new table in a warmer part of the restaurant. The head waiter bristled at this request and snapped "You should have said something earlier." But we had just got there. He became visibly irritated and hustled us to a table in the back. He told us to take our old napkins and didn't put bread or olive oil on the new table. This ruined my mood at least. I was hoping the food would chher me up but things went from bad to sorse. The Chicken Mediteranneo was so lemony it was inedible. It was more like lemon with chicken. And the salad (arugula, apples, goat cheese) was bland. We won't be back.

With so many Italian restaurants on the same few blocks on the UES, it's hard to find which ones are actually worth going to. Cortina has delicious Italian food that tastes like it comes from an Italian grandmother's kitchen, but is presented artistically. The rolls are warm and delicious. Eggplant parm was excellent - I would definitely get it again if I returned! Everyone was happy with their meals. The dining room is small, so it is an ideal date place. On the night I went, there was a problem in the kitchen and we waited 50 mins for dinner, but our waiter was so pleasant that we did not mind. He also gave us tiramisu (the BEST I've had anywhere) on the house because of our wait. Definitely will return to this adorable place. Don't forget to order the tiramisu.

A recent discovery, I have now been back several times and each time am wowed by great taste sensations. Sitting either inside, outside or on the cusp between, this wonderfully adult and very romantic spot serves up wonderful home-made pastas and sauces. Salads are sensational and wonderfully dressed. The fried zucchini appetizer is not to be missed under any circumstances. When time for desserts (if you have ANY room left!) the chocolate mousse is sublime, as is the mango sorbet. All desserts are home-made and plentiful enough for 2, though you'll really want your own! We look forward to our visits there, coming though Central Park from the upper west side, whose Italians don't quite hold a candle to this delightful, neighbourhoody, romantic, classy place.

Cortina is the best kept secret on the upper east side. Fortunately I would like to tell everyone. The quality is fanatastic. Truly the chef is the Master in preparing your delightful experience. I have been dining in many resturants in New York & my favorite is Cortina. I usually have two entries because the food is so good. Try it like I have & you will keep going back.
