Sara, I agree 100% with you! I worked here for about a month and got on brilliantly with all the customers, loved the job but the maitre d' is a bully. I would encourage anyone to dine here because I know the rest of the staff to be lovely and very helpful, and the food is incredible, but don't waste your life by trying to seek employment here! The owner Mario is wonderful and really helped me out, but i wish he'd had better judgement in the maitre d'.

I compalined of him taking money and I got fired. He barely paid me for the days I worked. I tried to complian to the owner but he made it imposible. Oprations illgales!

We had an enjoyable evening out tonight at LeRefuge . We enjoyed every part of our meal. First we started with crab cakes and goat cheese salad that my husband and I shared. Their Duck are Fabulous! We tried their Lamb Chops, & striped bass which was the house special this evening. They were delicious and the bread was great, soft as can be and perfect for dipping in your sauce. We will def be back and quite happy with the service. We were a bit early for our reservation and spent 20 mins just chatting with the friendly staff in front. Highly recommend and it's my new local favorite, along with York Grill. : )

I'm kind of surprised at the bad reviews here. I rarely venture to the East Side but was told to meet some friends here and was not expecting much. The food was actually quite good and service was great we had a nice bottle of wine. duck and beet salad was very good The waitresses, both of whom seemed to be eastern European, were very nice to us, willing to accommodate requests, etc. While I am sure you can find better french food in New York, this seems like a solid neighborhood place with reasonable prices.
highly recommended

Not impressed by this place at all. The prices, are high for what you get ...an attempt at ambiance, medicore food, and poor service.

Not worth eating there if you have to deal with the horrible maitre D! He is really something and I don't mean that in a good way!

We had a great experience here. Food was delicious and the place has a great wine list. Try the Sancerre as it is terrific. Staff was very friendly and the restaurant itself has a very cozy feel. Place was immaculate when I was there.

A great place to frequent every now and so often, just to remind oneself "what a good dining experience is really all about". Granted this place might hurt your pocket book just a little, but when you audition all their eats and their exotic wine menu, it all seems well worth the $$. The service their is prompt and every entree there seems to be cooked just right. This place could have earned 6 stars, if city search had given me the option to.

This is a neighborhood standby - solid food, unpretentious attitude, reservations always available. They also have a lovely garden out back. However, I have been going to this restaurant for a few years now and always ordered the same entree - a dish of sauteed shrimp on a bed of spinach and cous cous in a carrot-curry broth. It was my favorite - absolutely delicious. On my most recent visit I did not see this dish on the menu. I was told the menu was changed three days earlier and that my dish did not make the cut. I ordered a nightly special, red snapper, which was tasty but had about two sticks of butter in the sauce. I will not be going back unless they put my dish back on the menu. Seriously - if someone from the restaurant reads this and decides to reinstate it, please contact me.

We had dinner on the weekend and left happy and relaxed. The rustic french ambiance is like leaving nyc for few hours. The food was great and our server was nice. We will definitely come back- the desserts are amazing-try the profiterols

I guess we went on the right night or something. I think this little place is charming, and we had friendly service, very good food, and didn't get aggravated for a change. I felt relaxed. Goat cheese salad was fresh and good. Duck was very good. Bread was great. I'd definately go again.

I've known the refuge for many years, and it was one of my favorite restaurant in the city. I even thought that the prices were not that high regarding the excellent quality of the food. The service was very professional and friendly and I was used to see the same faces around... I came back a couple of times lately and obviously Pierre Saint-Denis (former owner/chef) doesn't own the place anymore and I'm sorry but the food and the service quality decreased tremendously. The menu is pretty much the same but the taste of the dishes I've been eating regularly in the past changed and is not as good as before. I found the Maitre D' very arrogant and not friendly at all and I won't go back there anymore. Very disappointing.

My wife and I live on the upper east side and happen to be walking down 82nd and decided to give the french restaurant a try. I'd seen it many times before and it looked very charming. This place was great. The food was phenomenal and the servers were very nice. We got a great seat by the window looking at the street and spent a few hours just drinking wine and talking. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Not being able to park near our favorite westside French restaurant (La Mirabelle) we drove across town arriving at Le Refuge, a restauraant a friend recommended a number of years ago. The outer room was pleasant while the staff was indifferenct at best. We don't mind spending money for exceptional food and/or atmosphere but we strongly object to being gouged even before oprdering. When we inquired about the prix fix menu we were informed that cash only was acceptable for these items while our credit card can be used to pay the rest of the bill. I don't think customers should have to search there wallets for cash whilde sitting at the dinner table. While the food was decent, it was hardly extraordinary. With my prix fix, I ordered coffee. When the check arrived I was surprised on three fronts. First, unlike any other restaurant the coffee was not included in the prix fix price. Second, a not very good small cup of American coffee cost $3,50. Third, the refill cost an additional $3.50. When I inquired whether this was a mistake, I was briskly told that it was not. Subsequently, I learned that the restaruant had changed hands. There are far too many French restaurants in this city to settle for this accented con game.

This Restaurant was very
Ask to the waiter or waitress to give you a table in the back room where all the romance of the place is situated with a so-called chimney!! And don't be fooled by the entrance!!! As a french woman just started to live in USA, NJ, i was particularly impressed by the quality of the food served in that restaurant. Tasty and absolutely delicious. I particularly recommand the "feuillete d'escargot", the roasted duck with brocoli mousse and strawberry sauce, and for desert some "profiterolles" (with HOT CHOCOLATE)!!!' As beverages ask for a KIR Royal (it's not on the menu), but they would serve it if you ask

We were seated in the front room which was nothing special. I ordered the goat cheeese gratin for an appetizer, which came drenched in oil. We had the yellow fin tuna for dinner, which was alright. We expected to have a wonderful, romantic dinner, but ended up leaving the restaurant fumming. We had been given a gift card for $250.00. We tried to pay the bill with it, they would not accept it. Apparently the restaurant, was now under new ownership, however still using and banking on the past Le Refuge reputation. We asked for the manager, he said he couldn't honor it because he was afraid he would get into trouble. He was helpless, and appeared to not be any position to assist or too scared too. We left upset, confused and very irritated. Due to the service (or lack of) I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Delicious French food, fish dishes particularly good as well as the steak. Very nice French wines. Service is very attentive, professional and hardworking (maybe even overworked). Very cozy ambience, nice date place or for special occasion. I agree with the raters who suggested trying to get a table in the back - the front area does have a bar and it's somewhat of a high-traffic area. I recommend making a reservation.

It's a great place to have some french food - the waitstaff is really friendly and helpful, and the food is stellar. It can get to be expensive, though, so save it for a special occasion

Also, the tables in the front are way too close together; when you make your reservation, try to get a table in the back...

Nice atmosphere, great prices for New York. The food was better than I thought it would be from the simplicity of the menu. But beyond all that, it was the people who were the exceptional experience. Being a non-New Yorker, it can sometimes be daunting, especially in a French restuarant for a single diner. The service was warm, friendly and the food was better because of it.

When it gets cold in Manhattan, my thoughts turn to Le Refuge on the upper east side. The food is always the best: meat, seafood or even pasta, the drinks are generous, the wine list has many reasonable choices, and the atmosphere is romantic bistro. You'll always get a yahoo who's never been there before who wants and can't get a special table, but make a reservation, get there on time, and you're in for a treat. There's a reason they're popular. And check out their pre-theater and early-bird specials!

In Short
With its warm, cluttered French provincial ambience and courteous staff, Le Refuge manages to make the most casual visitor feel like a neighborhood regular. The dining room plays on woody bistro motifs; in warm weather,…
