such a nice beautiful cozy restaurant! its fantastic the waitress held our spot on the line and allowed us to go around the block for a bottle of wine! and we had a table waiting for us once we got back!

yes its byob! such a value at that and such a selection at the shop around the block. i bet they get so much business because of this restaurant.

this is your traditional French bistro, great place to start your date, and move on toward all the bars in the village afterwards.

love it!

This is my favorite BYOB restaurant in New York. Everytime I have a timeoff I make sure that I dined at Tartine.
I had been going to this place since it open. I know most of the waiters. They are very friendly and accomodating.
My favorite is the curry mussels with frites. Delicious. You can get better food than this.
Service is excellent. Kudos to Tartine.

Pros: Good and excellent food. Fantastic service .

Cons: They may run out of their special

Great place of a lite lunch. Wonderful tartine (sandwiches) and soups served daily. It's like being in a french county shop. You sit with other patrons a big french county tables. Wonderful place to take in a little bit of french culture in the middle of Manhattan.

Located right in the heart of West Village, this is a French restaurant of casual sort. Its small corner space is crowded with proportionately small tables, its food simple and basic, not much cream and sauce that you might expect from French cuisine. It is supposed to be one of those cheap-chic, quintessentially Village restaurants, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a relaxing dining experience. No reservation, cash only and, don't forget to bring own wine.

This place is adorable. I was taken here on a date and I love that it's BYOB. They even open the bottle for you. I got the chicken and my date got the spicy chicken, and I picked the spinach salad and the sauce from the chicken mixed with it and it was fantastic. We went on a Friday and there was a very long wait, so be prepared. I'm not sure how long we waited, maybe 45 minutes, but unfortunately since the line's on the sidewalk and not private property, you can't open your bottle while you wait. It's very cramped inside so you really have to squeeze into your seats, but I loved it anyway. Cash only (caught us off guard).

This restaurant has the best curry and coconut milk mussels on special. They come in a huge bucket. They make me weep.
I've been coming to Tartine for years and it only seems to get tastier and each time I think, "Sweet Chocolate Jesus- that was the best tasting food they served us yet ! "

I don't know what everyone is talking about, they have PLENTY of legroom. it's a LARGE restaurant on the corner!! Bring the whole clan! The staff is lightning quick and professional about our orders.

I asked the girls and they've all worked there for years. I think the bad reviews must be people from competing restaurants in the neighborhood. How could anyone be untrained and rude when I see them hugging and kissing all the regular customers every time I have a meal there?! Lordy, some people in NY nuzzle on teats! and it saddens me to always have to share the dining room with such dreadful pretentious babies- but such is the price to live in such a wonderful city and eat such wonderful cheap food. Here's a thought - If you sausage fluffers are so stuffy and rich, WHY YA EATIN AT SUCH A CHEAP RESTAURANT JERKY PANTS?

I'm sorry to hear that the other reviewer was so disappointed. Tartine was my friend's favorite restaurant in New York and since she introduced me to it, I might argue it's mine as well. They serve delicious new French (?) fare, that in the many times I've been there, whatever I've gotten, it's all been good. The place is really, really small [read: (if you're like me) "cozy"; (whereas if you're note) read: "cramped"). I've always found the service to be fine: nothing memorable either good or bad. The real key here is that the place is BYO, meaning the cost of dinner stays low. With entrees from the mid/high teens to low twenties you can eat a really great meal (and I honestly do think their food is wonderful) and drink a bottle of wine (no corkage, so far as I remember) for around $30-something. I can't recommend it enough. With all the places to try in the city, I'll be going there for my 5th (or so) time tomorrow night.

I came here on a Wednesday night pretty close to closing time. When I asked if they were still seating I was greeted with a smile and taken right away to a nice seat.

I ordered the spicy chicken and house salad which were delicious. My friend ordered the grilled salmon which happened to just be so-so. We both drank a glass of wine, at his suggestion, which was phenomenal.

Why four stars? However, what I do love is that the staff here are knowledgeable. It doesn't seem as though they hire any server with a nice skill set.

Sorry to see the quality of the food go down so much. I've gone to Tartine since 1992 and have always loved the place. In fact, and this is true, once while in the hospital at St. Vincents, the first day I could get out of bed, I walked to Tartine for lunch.

Now though, the food is really bad; from the pasteurized Tropicana orange juice to the really soggy (not moist but soggy) apple pancake. My wife's scrambled eggs were on the other end, dry and brown. I write because this is the second Sunday in two months that we've been dissapointed with the brunch.

The coffee is still great, the pastries beautiful to look at in the case, and the view is wonderful. The service is what it is. Don't go for the food.

One of my good friends came for a visit and suggested dinner at Tartine. As previous reviews have stated, it is a cozy restaurant with limited seating. We were fortunate enough to get a seat as soon as we got there. There were people waiting to get seated, and it was cold and rainy! We had a fantastic French meal of classic French onion soup, an onion and goat cheese tart, and mussels with saffron broth! There was a bountiful selection of desserts and had I not been very satisfied with dinner, I would have indulged with more than one dessert. Instead, I settled with a white and chocolate mousse with fresh strawberries! Delicious!

I highly recommend this restaurant for some comfy French food and beautiful, delicious desserts! I'm taking my boyfriend here next time we go out to eat!

I've been coming here for years and I have almost never been disappointed with anything except the occasional long waits as they do not take reservations...it's just too small. The food, however, is excellent, and they always offer an imaginative specials list. Oh, when it's very crowded (which is always) you might get a really tiny table...but who cares, it's just super and you bring your own wine because there's a church across the street! For those that don't mind tight spaces and a noisy crowd, this is simply great! It's a neighborhood bistro just like in Paris

Long lines and tiny tiny place., however, the staff was very patient with us- we were a large group with 5 then 7-- no wait, 5 of us. An extra table was put together for us. We ordered these entrees- mussels in saffron broth, chicken in a pastry (citysearch won't let me write po* pie), steak frites ( I think the sirloin) and fish-- don't remember the name of the fish dish. Well everyone was very happy with their dish. I always have mussels at bistro places and these mussels were quite good. Not as good as Cafe des Bruxelles (on a good day) but right next to it. My friend who ordered the chicken is a very finicky eater and doesn't normally eat meat but she was happy with her dish. So, in the words of Sacha Baron Cohen, I'd say Tartine was "great success!"

I have been to many of the best restaurants in the Manhattan/Hoboken areas for breakfast and I must say that this is hands down the best breakfast (brunch) I have ever had. I am obsessed with eggs flourentine and have been let down ever since the day I experienced Tartine's eggs flourentine. The hollandaise is homeade to perfection, the poached eggs are always done just right, and the crispy potatos with chives and tomatoes are the perfect complement to an already perfect dish. I have never left "smelling" like the restaurant- as one person claimed, and in about 10 years it has never let me down. It is a hidden jem.

I went here for brunch and it is now 6PM and I am STILL talking about how amazing my omelet was. Potatoes and vegetables on the side were unreal! My fellow dinner and I were thoroughly impressed by this food. They sit you down with a cup of OJ, which I thought was cute and different. Only complaint was that the OJ was not fresh squeezed. My fellow diner thought they should have had bread on the table. It is a french restaurant. It actually came out hot, which is a rare occurrence with restaurants today. This was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. It was a quant atmosphere, very french. Tiny restaurant with very little room to move, but that is what gives this place charm. I really want to go back for dinner. Highly recommended! I want to go back!

A disgusting experience...don't sit inside! your clothes will smell for a week afterwards. the eggs benedict were gross -- the yolks hard, the english muffins stiff as boards; and the waiter was SO rude when we asked for new eggs. bottom line: if you go sit outside and don't go on a saturday or sunday for brunch -- the kitchen can't take the crowds and execute the food properly.

I like to go here on a warm evening, sometimes you can grab a seat outside and pop open your bottle while you wait for a table. The food is good, a standard stand-by.

Tartine's food is good - but the service is extremely rude. I'll never go back there again. When I arrived I asked the waitress whether I could just drink a coffee and eat a croissant until my friend arrived and we would have brunch together. The waitress said that it would be okay. However, while I was still drinking my coffee - another waiter asked me to leave because people were waiting outside. I explained him that my friend would arrive in 10 minutes and that we would have brunch together. I also offered to tip well. All of a sudden the waiter started to scream that I could not block the table and that I should wait outside until my friend arrived. I have never been treated like this anywhere - the waiter literally threw me out of the restaurant like a bouncer! I will certainly never return to Tartine again.. There are plenty of restaurants in New York with good food AND friendly staff.

Slather the butter! Was hounding for omlettes on one Tuesday afternoon in West Village and fell upon low key, low priced lunch/breakfast french inpired Tartine... Idyllic small outdoor sidewalk setting away from the bru-ha-ha of NYC. Waiter was very accommodationg and the giant Apple Pancake was the consistency of a pudding breakwith crispy edges. Perfect post weekday hangover spot!

Just ate dinner there this past Sat (4/21/07) and was very disappointed with the service. It was my second time there but I can honestly say... never again!!! To sum up my experience at Tartine in a nut-shell it was: 1) a long wait 2) a grossly small restaurant with people bumping into your chair every time they pass 3) a rude and poorly trained staff with major attitude 4) a bus boy that thinks its ok to sweep and stack tables right beside you while you're still eating... and 5) a rushed meal where they can seat the next table as quickly as possible.

The fact that the staff get away with being so poor in customer service and common courtesy is mind-boggling and they are not afraid to let you know that they truly don't care either way, just pay them in cash (no credit cards). If you want your dining experience to include any of the above factors, then Tartine is your restaurant. However, if you want good food with a pleasant wait staff then try the million other restaurants in New York.

The regular meals are just fine, but the real standouts are the morning baked goods. These are the best croissants I've ever had, and the brioche is pretty great, too.

My boyfriend and I love coming to place. They place is alway packed in the summer and I think all year round too. We always start out with a salade basquaise-arugula, appetizer- escargot and main course would be the grilled sirloin steak (with red wine bordelaise sauce) with french fries (great fries....they are so good) and dessert-Chocolate marquise. All was yummy!! Been going here for years and was never disappointed and don't forget to bring your own wine. This place is a must to test for.

Great place to go for a relatively inexpensive meal in the West Village. The croquettes are very good, the mussels just OK, the spinach salad is great, but by far the best part is the BYOB! The service is nice enough, but you can't help but feel a little rushed with the line of people outside waiting. If you don't want to brave the wait outside, they also deliver.

My friend and I went for early dinner at an outside table after work last Friday. She ordered the yellowfin tuna and I had the steak frites, both medium rare, and shared the plum tart. Although both came closer to well-done, the food was otherwise excellent. Service left something to be desired in terms of attention but in another sense if you're looking for a very relaxed place where no one is hovering about you, this is it. Great corner to people-watch and you can buy a bottle of wine within walking distance (I went over to 8th Ave). Fantastic neighborhood restaurant.

I have heard much about this place and before i wrote this, I saw that some peopl complained about waiting and the rude staff. I saw no rudeness and in fact the opposite; they were vey accommodating considering how busy they were. They even gave up a 4 seat table so that we could add a fifth to our group comfortably. The watresses were very pleasant and again, considering how busy they were and how cramped the restaurant is, I was impressed.

The food was ecellent and their self baked deserts were delicious as well.

If you are a prissy person or don't like to wait for seating, or if you don't like crowded places to eat, this is not for you. If you are relazex and can imagine being in Paris eating at a small cafe, bringing your own wine and just enjoying friends, this IS for you. I am somewhat inbetween myself, but accepted the small space and enjoyed my friends.

I've been to Tartine a few times for brunch, and my last visit will be my last visit ever. The potatoes had been sitting out for probably a few hours, and were rock hard, covered in cold oil. I've eaten unidentified meat at roadside stalls in China, so I can't really describe myself as an overly demanding critic.
The waiter was rude and disinterested, and all the patrons at the table next to us had to get up and shuffle out the door (literally), in order for there to be room for us to move out of our seats. Did I mention the food was terrible? That should theoretically be the selling point. And at 13.95, not even remotely a brunch "deal." Please don't patronize this lazy establishment.

Tartine is one of my favorite places in Manhattan for value, quality, and setting. They have great cafe food and great quiet location with outdoor seating. I wish there were more like it in the city.

When they say NYC restaurants are small, they weren't kidding with Tartine. You are sure to bump into someone's table when getting to your seat. Because of the size, there is sure to be a wait list when dining here. Unfortunately, they don't use wait lists, possibly because the staff size is limited. So, you are courteously directed to wait outside. There is an immediate sense of uncertainty b/c there are no lines nor organization. The Apple Pancakes are great and definitely are worth the selection.

What kind of restaurant owner makes their curstomers wait outside in a line unless they really think very little of you...? With so many better restaurants in the area, this place is not worth the wait, the bad service, cramped tables, mediocre food, and the cash only policy. Don't bother with the pork, it's over cooked, dry, and tasteless.

I've been to Tartine twice now. So by no means am I a regular. But there are two simple things about this place. The food is GREAT and the service is STRAIGHT FORWARD.

I was rather impressed with the wait staff. They handle the space well and work with what they have. I'm guessing the people talking about not liking pretentious spots are the most pretentious people around... If you've paid, then you decide to wait out a storm, so you choose to order a coffee, you've got a problem. How about the people out waiting for a table. Hop in a cab and open the table on this jem.

Pros: Quality, BYOB w/o cork fee

Cons: , wait can be long

.

The only negative thing about this place is its size - it's small. Outside of that, the service is good and the food even better. Ideal place for dinner for two.

This place is exasperating. There is a total disconnect between the rather good food at a reasonable price and the absolutely mindnumbing surlyness of the waitstaff. Rarely ever do you get a hello, or a thank you, and God forbid should they smile, and this is from someone who has been coming here for years. These folks need a wakeup call. Came by and my meal seemed inordinately delayed. I inquired if there was perhaps a problem and was told "you can be patient or leave". WHAT!!. These folks are nuts. A simple inquiry met by such a harrangue. Sorry folks, but what you've read by others as far as the totally rude waitstaff, is in my opinion totally justified.

It may not look like much from the outside but what Tartine lacks in space they make up for in food. In the winter it's cute and cozy and in the summer it's a great place to sit outside and have a bottle of wine but note it's BYOB. The sauteed chicken is my favorite but make sure to save room for dessert. The little tarts are delicious.

Pros: excellent food

Dinner last night was hangar steak in green pepper sauce and fries. I had no idea hangar steak could be tough but there's a first time for everything. However the french fries were fresh and perfectly done. Warning, this place is tiny with ambiance that reminded me of a diner. The real draw is the BYO policy.

I have gone to tartine about a dozen times since moving to the area 6 months ago, and every experience has been great. The BYOB policy is fantastic, and the food is consistently good. The service may seem a bit laid back, but they get everything right and remember where you are in line waiting to get seated. Definitely a very special place with friends or a date. The lighthouse theme and small quarters are part of the ambiance and experience. Check it out despite the wait.

Bottom Line: For Brunch, Tartine serves the best Eggs Benedict in NYC. At dinner time, they serve an herbed goat cheese salad (appetizer) which is also the best in NYC. The rest of the food is excellent, but these two dishes stand out.

I have seen alot of negative comments regarding the wait staff, but I have never had a problem. Sure, the women are not cheerleader with a tray types, but if you need "pizzazz" with your food, you should be eating at a chain restaurant, not a busy little bistro in the village. They are just way to busy to chit chat - which is how I prefer it since they seem to get my order right the first time.

i fell in love with Tartine when i was a freshman in collage...now i go there with a baby cart. i've been there so many times and never had a bad experience. only advice; if you are very hungry or the weather is bad, have another place in mind to dine before you go...it's a small place, so you might have to wait outside a while to be seated.

There is something very special about a restaurant that can offer amazing delights at reasonable prices. I did not find the wait staff to rude at all, how involved do you really want them in your meal right? I had no idea, how wonderful my dinner would be! I could not have been happier with my escargots and my "Tart Fine". I was lucky enough not to wait on a line, but one did form.

...BYOB policy. How else to enjoy decent tasting, decently priced French food then with a normally-priced bottle of wine. Bring a date and 2 bottles--one for the wait and one dinner.

we love Tartine. We love the location, the decor, the great food, the incredibly delicious deserts, the great BYOB policy. With great ffo and a big tip, you 're out of there for under 35 a person. The waitresses are horrible, but who the hell cares. We have been there at least 30 timnes in the past 10 years, and I can't wait to return

Great food; however, you're bound to wait awhile. I've seen long lines, but if you're in leisurely mood, it's nice to bring a bottle of wine and dine, because the neighborhood and French feel is memorable.

i had no idea how small this restaurant would be. although there was a line outside, we only wound up waiting for about 10 minutes. The interior is small and cramped, but i didn't feel like we were on top of the people next to us. I can't be sure but i think the bread they gave us in the bread basket was left over from those before us. The food was okay, the roasted pear salad was amazing, the chicken pot pie - too creamy, and the steak frites nothing to write home about.
It was still a nice night, wait staff was attentive and it is a nice option to bring your own wine.
Big drawback, after we left we REEKED of food. Guess it was the close quarters??

This restaurant, while extremely small, was an excellent choice for dinner. The service was attentive and pleasant. The food was delicious; perfect bistro food. Desserts were delectable. The BYOB aspect was great (I love BYOB restaurants!). But you should understand that saying the place is small is an understatement. If you don't like close quarters, then you might want to find another place. However, if you view close quarters as a chance to meet new people or get close to that special someone, then this is your place!

I'd been told how cozy and romantic Tartine was before I went on a date, and my dinner there totally confirmed this. Tartine is one definitive example of how small restaurants often have more personality. The dinner fare was French-influenced and light, but satiating. I'd leave room for their enticing desserts. Even the coffee was good!

Had our best (and least expensive) breakfast while in NY at Tartine. Yes, we had a bit of a wait, and yes, the service was indifferent at best. The food, however, was marvelous, and at $10 per person, a great value. It was lovely to sit outside and people-watch.

Came on a Wednesday nite with another couple and even though there were no seats available, we had a great time sipping our wine and enjoying the tranquility of the West Village while we were waiting (only about 20min). Dinner was absolutely fabulous, completely reasonable, and our waitress had some great suggestions from the menu. Probably better to go on an off-night, as the space is intimate, but no one wanted to leave and I'm having a hard time convincing my friend to eat anywhere else!!

My second visit to Tartine was dinner on my first date. Things haven't changed much it's always packed even on a stormy rainy night! Food was fairly pleasant and simple. Service was fairly decent. My date seem to enjoy the spicy chicken but they fries was overwhelming. My grilled salmon was tasty but nothing special. The desset of a light raspberry chocolate mousse cake was amazing. At least this night we got better seating closer to the window with a view compared to my last visit near the desserts. Haven't too much problem with their service compared to everyone's review. With the exception of one late day when I came in for caffe and the waitress nearly rushed us out since dinner was coming around. Btw, to the 'anonymous' regarding my comment on dating. Seems like you're the type who doesn't pay for anything. Sugar Daddy I am not.

If you try to avoid pretense as I do, give this place a miss. Not five minutes after paying, we decided to wait out a storm, and order coffee/dessert. Our waitress proceeded to argue: "I have a party of 6 I need to seat, and you've already paid. I can't tell them now they have to wait an hour. Is this your first time here? Maybe you don't know how we do things here." We explained that we changed our minds, despite the fact that we already paid, and wanted to order coffee after all. She walked away in a huff, and had the BUSBOY pass on the same message: you can't order coffee because you've already paid (have these people never heard of someone changing their mind? We were flabbergasted.) Since we had no desire to stay then, we left: taking more than half our original tip with us.
