I have never been treated so poorly as a customer. I had to take a few WEEKS to cool off before posting this.

Here's the short version: I dropped off an amp to be diagnosed. It was fixed without my permission. I had to cough up almost $300 and when I got the amp home, it broke immediately.

This is a local, family owned business and has been around for 60+ years. Most people you ask about it has pretty much the same story - decent prices, fair selection, great teachers, and you can trust them just about as far as you can throw them.

A few months ago, I brought in a 60 watt tube amp for electric guitar. It's a quality piece that retailed for around $450 (I got this amp for an AMAZING steal from my best friend - $40 bucks and a trade for a smaller amp I had). One day, the amp just stopped turning on. Not knowing how to fix it, I brought it to Oceanside Music School to be diagnosed. I made it very clear to the "gentleman" that ran the place (Named JJ, one of the sons of the owners) that I didn't know what was wrong so I would like to get it DIAGNOSED to see if it would be worth fixing. At no point was any price discussed. I was told I would receive a call in a few days with a quote so I could decide if I would have it repaired or not. I never got that call...Things got very busy for me, but 2 MONTHS later, I called them. I was told that my number had been misplaced and that my amp was ALREADY FIXED. After I told them I never approved the repair, I was told that it was "worth it" and "not to worry about it". They wanted $290 from me. I was appalled.

Not once did I receive an apology, only more and more reasons why I should pay for it. "It's a great amp" "It's worth the money" "It's okay because this costs much more at other places". I was getting a QUOTE in case it turned out to be expensive, my investment would only have been 40 bucks.

With each discussion I had with JJ, the story changed.

First he tells me he "remembers our conversation exactly" and I said if it didn't cost too much, to go ahead and fix it (I believe 'too much' would be the customers decision). Then he says that I told him right away to fix it. And my favorite, he lastly tells me that I told him as long as I kept it under $250 that he should go ahead with the repair.

The fact is, he made a mistake, and REFUSED to admit it. He would rather I pay up and disappear.

I had no choice but to pay and take the amp home.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE

I was told that I have a 3 months warranty on all the work that was done. I get the amp home, plug it in and POP...it goes dead. I hold back tears and call the store. JJ tells me that the warranty was up because "You took longer than 3 months to come pick it up". That would include the time that they lost my phone number, which is clearly my fault...

This was only rectified after I came back in and gave them a piece of my mind. After I was called a "privileged little s**t (because clearly, anyone under 25 who wears a tie to work COULDN'T have earned those clothes himself) his mother had to stop me out in the parking lot and offer to send my amp back to their technician.

Turns out that there was a defective part installed and it was fixed for no additional fee.

This was by far the most stressful retail experience I have ever had. When I told friends and family, I got the same response from everyone - "Well why the hell did you bring it to them!?"

Buyers beware

They rarely have what I need there. Staff is dismissive and not very well informed. This has been my experience on at least a dozen occasions.

Quality business. Lessons are prices well and the make up policy is very friendly. My 3 daughters rent instruments here as well. The rental price is competitive plus they service the instrument when we please. They carry all the accessories for the instruments too which adds convienace! The teachers and staff are very helpful and make everyone feel welcome. Additionally, they have another store in Long Beach that allows us to take much up lessons there!

I heard its a 3rd generation family owned business! I found this incredible!

I have been going there and the Long Beach store for the last few years and think that they are great! I'm a professional musician and have no issues with their knowledge or equipment because if I need something they don't have it gets ordered. I also got a really great starter guitar for my son and now all he does is play it. He is taking lessons too and I have noticed that it really brought him to another level. The whole family that runs the place is cool, and you immediately can tell who is related and who isn't! I highly recommend them. There is no corporate greediness too the stores too, which is refreshing. I look forward to the window displays during the holidays too!

I have been using Oceanside school of music for over 10 years, my son plays 5 instruments thanks to their help and is accepted to college for music. We have purchased varied instruments from them over the years and they have even ordered higher end equipment. I have been in recently and seen a wide selection of Fender, Marshall etc. My daughter is now starting music, I hope that I will be able to have their assistance over the years with her as well, if their is a better customer service store around I have yet to find it.
