Dr. Cotter has been my main vet since 1996, initially for my multi-cat household, later I added a dog, and when she passed, now a puppy. He has an excellent bedside manner, which helps the animals feel at ease in a normally stressful situation and he is extremely knowledgeable and ethical. I trust him very much. During a period of time when I had my large dog, I started taking her to a local vet clinic (I live crosstown from Dr. Cotter) for convenience sake and while they have a good reputation, I did not feel nearly as comfortable or as at ease, not to mention Dr. Cotter is vastly more affordable. I'd have been better off paying for a pet taxi to go to Dr. Cotter's and I'd still have saved money. Now that I have my new puppy, when she grows up to be a big dog, I will do just that. Natacha is very helpful and often troubleshoots for Dr. Cotter. She's extremely knowledgeable too. When I've had emergencies or questions, she'll walk me through them on the phone, saving me an office trip whenever possible. This office is NOT out to make as much money as possible off of each visit. They will do what is medically necessary for your pet. And did I mention he has the best rates going in the city? They also helped me get all my stuff in order for my cats when I flew them to California without any issues. I highly recommend this vet office. Its worth traveling to.

I really feel sorry /bad for Dr. Cotter for having such a RUDE and tempermental wife as the person in front of the business. She is really hurting his practice. Don't know why they don't hire a polished receptionist as she is chasing people away.
I would not go there for FREE. She hangs the phone up on you, is filled with contradictions, lies, etc. she has serious mental problems and no customer should EVER have to put up with this.

Patrick is TERRIFIC - a real country doctor in the city. Have used him for over 10 years. Yes, Jacquline is correct - Natasha is a B - but it is what it is - one must deal with it and not take it personally. No need to get your knickers all twisted about it - the animal care is well worth her attitude

Response to Jaqueline's experience

In contrast to your extensive attempt to convice others that you had a terible experience, Dr. Cotter and Natasha are the absolute best with pets!
It's a matter of your personality; because the rest of us, who have taken our pets to Dr. Cotter for years, have a normal receptionist/patient relationship with her.

I worked at the Animal Medical Center for many years and will only take my pets to see Dr. Cotter. He has been my vet for 15 yrs and I travel from Brooklyn to see him.

I object to Jacqueline's review. Although Natasha can be abrupt, she is merely trying to do her job, she wears many "hats" and must multi-task. Dealing with the public can be difficult but she is also trying to get as much info to pass on to Dr. Cotter so that he is not burdened with details and can concentrate on the animal. Natasha has the animal's best interests at heart.

Until he retired, Dr. Tierney, who cared for my cats for over 40 years, shared offices with Dr. Cotter. I am now taking my cat to Dr. Cotter and am very pleased with him and will continue with him.

Like most people, I care very much about the quality of care that my dog receives. I was referred to Dr. Cotter's office by another clinic and made an appointment.

Due to the nature of the service we needed for our dog (surgery to remove a tumor) we had to make sure that some paperwork had been forwarded to Dr. Cotter and, consequently, called his offer two times or so prior to our appointment (once to schedule, once to follow up on paperwork). Both times the receptionist (Dr. Cotter's wife) was extremely rude. I'm talking about, completely, utterly, condescendingly, unhelpful, confusing, flat out, pointlessly RUDE. The second time we called we made sure to be extra-nice so as to possibly avoid the rude, but, once again, we were admonished for basically existing as humans.

Since we needed the dog to be seen rather quickly we decided to move ahead and go to the appointment. I'd like to reiterate here that because I expected the receptionist to be rude, I went in extra-friendly-style and tried to be as helpful as possible. How foolish of me.

I was not greeted, neither was my (super friendly) dog. I wasn't given any paperwork, but was instead asked to spout off various bits of personal information (all whilst being interrupted occasionally for her to answer the phone and yell at those people too). When I had to look up one phone number in my contact list, she rolled her eyes at me and told me we'd have to take care of it after the appointment. When she called the name, she pronounced it so incorrectly I wasn't sure if she meant me, so I said my name aloud and asked if that was who she meant. She looked me dead in the face and replied, "Whatever."

The doctor was nice enough, he was gentle with the dog, but he also seemed perplexed by my asking questions that I thought seemed fair (how long would the surgery take? how many hours till I could return to pick up the dog?). I mentioned that the receptionist hadn't been very kind, and he said something about personalities clashing.

When I went back into the main office to finish giving the receptionist my information, she mentioned being present during my dog's procedure. I asked what her involvement would be, and found out that she'd be handling the anesthesia. She then asked me, "Why do you ask?" I explained that I needed to trust and feel reassured by those who would be performing (a $700) surgery on my dog and that her attitude thus far had been rude and less than helpful.

She pointed to a sign that read something along the lines of: Dogs welcome, people by appointment.

She then went off about how she loves pets but people don't have their stuff together and she doesn't like them, and brought up the fact that I had needed to access my contact list to provide a number. I apologized for the delay in number-providing, assured her that I was a competent person (I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Communication of all things, and am a PhD student), and asked for her to return my dog.

I left and I will NEVER go back and would never recommend this service to anyone.

As a pet owner you DESERVE to feel comfortable, informed, and good about the medical treatment your cat/dog/rat/bird/etc will receive. You should never have to pry to have basic questions answered and you should never doubt the service offered.

Dr. Cotter is the best. His background with the Humane Society means he not only has superb skills--- he can do procedures other vets would send you to a specialist for--- he doesn't see his pet patients as cash cows, no pun intended, ordering or performing needless test to run up vet bills.
He is definitely the or one of the best vets in the city.

I will not take my cat to anyone else. I travel about an hour to see him, from where I moved uptown. He loves animals, as is evident from his patience & kindness with them. A year and a half ago my other cat died, and both he and his wife (the business manager) were so incredibly kind and sympathetic towards me. I have experienced 2 other vets, both of whom did not appear to like animals that much - they were rough with them, not very understanding of the animals' experiences - especially with cats who do not get out of the house here in Manhattan so are in shock already when they arrive. I would recommend Dr. Cotter to anyone. His rates are incredibly reasonable as well.

Dr. Cotter has treated my 2 cats and did a very scary removal of my cat's cyst under her jaw. He is so focused, yet at the same time so friendly and trusting. He's a great person. Natasha, the receptionist is great too! I only trust Dr. Cotter with my animals and I've been to 4 vets in the city. Only Dr. Cotter!

We really like Dr. Patrick Cotter and have taken our dog there for her vaccinations, stomach troubles, and spaying. They are incredibly affordable and very nice. They have also given us recommendations on where to board our dog in the city. We will continue going to Dr. Cotter for great care at a wonderful price!
