I went to Roc tonight with a friend to enjoy Valetine's Day. We had made reservations online and when we arrived they seemed to have no idea that we had made reservations. They promptly got us our table anyway, but after waiting patiently for our waiter to acknowledge us and take our oder 1 hour had gone by and we still had not received our appetizers. I had to bring this to our waiters attention if not we would have been sitting there all night. He had lost our order completely and we had to re-order 1 hour later. In the meantime we had a movie to catch in 30 min, so I finally spoke to the manager about our problem. So 70 min after ordering our meal our appetizers came. Which was immediately followed by our dinner and desert. The meal itself was very good, but when you have to rush it makes it unpleasant.

All the meanwhile the table next to us had eaten paid and left, and of course they ordered after us.

The manager bought us our drinks, which was nice, but when the bill came the gratuity was already added on and was $25.00!!!! This is ridiculous considering we got the worst service. My advice to Roc is don't overbook your restaurant on a holiday just to make extra money. Its more about the quality not the quantity. On this reason alone I will never go there again. Waste of time and money. I want my $25 back!

I have to say it is one of the best restaurant in NYC for Pasta. They are fresh and blend with interesting flavors.
Deserts are good but not great. Amazing wine choice but sadly not a great choice if you wish to have wine by the glass. It will have been smart to propose some great wine by the glass. I had the lemon and goat cheese pasta delicious. My fiance the sea scallops, onions and saffron paste:delicious. My cousin got the gnocchi : disappointing not by their quality they are super fresh and have a good consistence but the way they prepare them is ruining them! I was surprised that we have to ask 3 times for a glass of water and wait quite a few to get olive oil on the table...? It's italian no?! The waiter was not smiling and very slow....It was a monday night!
So maybe you will be more lucky with service but food is definitively good.

I was not impressed by this place- I came for lunch on a nice afternoon, I did enjoy the outdoor seating but that's pretty much where it ended. I had the linguini frutti di mare- the mussels did not taste very fresh and the sauce did not have much flavor at all. The two small glasses of pinot grigio were overpriced and not very good either. My friend had the calamari salad, which was ok but nothing special. They didn't give us any bread plates, and I felt a bit rushed to finish my glass of wine once we were done with our meal. This place charges way too much for mediocre food. Next time I know to stick w/ Il Mattone when I'm in the area

The food prepared by chef is first rate.
The music is great. But if you thought that the music was too loud you must live in a monastery.
Just because you're paying good money does not mean people have to kneel at your feet. Front-of-house ROCCO does a great job.
The service was a-m-a-z-i-n-g.
We had the most informed waiter I have ever come across(MARCO !). He happily answered our barrage of questions covering the entire menu. We had a great sommelier rocco himself who advised us on a wonderful desert and desert wine pairing. HE HAS WON AWARD FROM WINE SPECTATOR!!!!
Our reservation was at 8 oclock, we finished up at 10:10pm without rush.
ROC has an SIDEWALK CAFE FULL OF STARS. I would recommend for an 8 oclock seating, this because of the candle-light. You will begin your meal in daylight and end it in candle-light with a beautiful view of the stars above you. Truly a great experience.

Pros: food, service, ambience

I have been going to NY for 20 years and this is the worst dining experience ever. Service was bad, and food was bland. Management was indifferent to feedback. I was shocked by lack of attentiveness to patrons. While I understand that all restaurants have their bad nights, the owner/manager told me that my complaints were out of line. He charged me for the bad wine and food. Just a note, this was the first time I have gone to the management of a NY restaurant to complain. Extremely unprofessional and shocking for a restaurant experience.

Service was great. The staff has a lot of pride in every aspect of the restaurant.

The food was so-so. The tuna was downright bad. It had a very rich red wine sauce that is appropriate for red meat, not fish. Ordered rare, it came out medium well. Stick with the pastas.

Lots of couples. Not a 20-something crowd.

went there for a first date this past saturday
the restaurant was dimly lit and set the mood for a great evening
the service was better than the food (which wasn't terrible, it's just that the service was that good)
a great place to dine for a night out that won't break the bank

I needed a last minute reservation on a Saturday night and this neighborhood restaurant was a terrific find - the staff went out of there way to help us celebrate a birthday, and the food was great. The pasta was delicious and portions are generous. The atmosphere is intimate and you get the feeling that everyone knows each other! Worth a trip downtown!

Ate at Roc last night and loved it. Warm and friendly atmosphere as soon as you set foot in the door. Never once felt rushed, service was attentive and experienced. Every single person in the restaurant left with a smile on their face. Our portions were huge! Always a pleasant surprise. Would definitely recommend the smoked duck and asparagus salad, was absolutely delicious. The Tuna was terrific as was the Gnocchi. Our dessert was massive and very hearty! Such a simple, elegant and well managed place. Will definitely return with locals and out of towners as well.

Roc is a delightful location but our food was really varied. The tuna was outstanding but two of us had a pasta dish with scallops and artichoke which was inedible. Artichoke leaves were thinly sliced and mixed thoughout the pasta; it was tough, fibrous and not digestable...it was impossible to separate it from the pasta. Upon choking on the artichoke we asked to send it back. This is where the service was lacking. There was no apology, no remedy; we were made to feel we were to blame. Proposing a simple alternative would have sufficed but instead they presented us with the full bill. Only upon questioning this did they remove one of the meals....nearly throwing it at us and again offering no apology. Really disappointing; will probably give it one more try but not for a while.

Cozy space and decor, inconsistent food. My friend loved the Swordfish topped with horseradish mashed potatoes special, however I found my fish entree to be lacking. Avoid the fried calamari and zuchini app - lots of fried zuchinni and very little calamari for $13. Overall a bit pricey for the experience.

Worst meal of my life. Appetizer: scallops w/ 3 pine nuts on bed of crunchy, inedible eggplant pieces. Entree: veal piccata w soggy breading covered with sauteed, tough artichoke heart pieces served w/ tough stringy spinach. Dessert: "cheesecake?" similar to grocery store mix for fake cheesecake. Bore no resemblance to cheesecake. Totally tasteless. Add $15 martinis and you have the picture. I dissuaded a patron at the door from coming in. Only fun I had all night.

Overall, I was hoping for more. The food was ok, the service was ok and the bill seemed a little costly for what we got. While I would return if some of my Tribeca favorites were too crowded, the Roc is not top on my list. Biggest complaint - the pasta and sauces were just ok, and not close to great or tasty.

Crabcake appetizer and fruit tart dessert were good. Pasta dishes were average - my friend's cavatelli with sausage and rabe seemed tasty while the scialiatelli with lobster/crab was uninspiring. A great and expansive, appropriately Italian heavy wine list was nice but approximately double wine markups put the majority of wine over 100 a bottle with probably less than 2 dozen under 50. Overall, nice ambience with great outdoor dining, but you could do better.

We stopped in on our way to Thalassa because it was so cold outside we couldn't make it the other three blocks. What a pleasant surprise! They had a very eclectic menu, a lot of thoughtful specials, and very nice service. The food was delicious and beautifully prepared and presented. My dad even liked it, and he doesn't like anything!

I had lunch with my colleague at Roc's recently. Although the cost was reasonable for the three-course prix fixe ($20.02pp) including coffee (a plus!), the service was a bit spotty. Our waiter (a real cutie) had to ask us twice for our entree selections, the coffee orders were wrong and after saying, "no, thanks", the pepper man poised his mill above my friend's calamari dish and ground away. Maybe it was a language thing, maybe it was an off day. Who knows, but the food was delish. The calamari was tender in a light sauce, the farfalli with lamb also cooked well and very flavorful. Desserts and the appetizer selections were tasty and plentiful. Go!

My fiance and I are new to the area, but feel right at home when visiting Roc. From the laid back ambience, non-pretentious and always personal service, the great Italian eats , and of course, Rocco--one of the most good spirited, gracious and modest hosts a newcomer can have.--We love Roc and glad to have our "neighborhood spot".
