My husband and I were at Cakeman Raven's last night. I must say, GONE were the waitresses with the serious attitude problem and I couldn't be happier. However, they were replaced with kind white guys but unfortunately one of them knew absolutely nothing about the community they worked in in terms of recommending eateries. My husband asked could he recommend a soul food establishment we could eat at and this guys reply was, Yes, SYLIVA's on W126th STREET in Harlem. What??? are you freaking serious dude? I'm in downtown Brooklyn and you suggest I trek to Harlem? Really? Also gone were the lines and I must say I kinda of miss that.
Organized chaos is cool (just think of the still long lines at Soup Nazi). Also, gone are the nuts which were available on the red velvet cakes. Although I am eating the cake as I type, it is tasty but something major is still missing. Not the same CAKEMAN. Please let me know when the old flair returns accompanied by the option of velvet cake with or without nuts and the wonderful organized chaos that made the place so special. I still recommend you check it out as I will from time to time to see if any of the aforementioned has returned.
Peace

Ordered a cake 1 week in advance for a birthday. First, I had to have an appointment to pick up my cake. I told the bakery I would pick it up the next day after my appointment - they said that was fine, and it would just be a day old waiting in the shop. When I arrived at the shop, nothing was there. They said they had no idea where my cake was, said to wait 45 minutes for the factory to bring it over. Waited an hour, still no cake. They even said that they had the same type of cake waiting in the shop for someone picking it up later in the day, and I asked to have that one, and have the factory bring over a new one to replace it. They refused, and acted like I was worthless. Cake man has lost his touch because of his incompetent workers. This place would have so much potential with a few good managers. Save your money, and the aggravation. No red velvet is worth this.

The best red velvet cake you will ever eat. Unlike the others this red velvet cake is extremely rich in flavor and taste. The Frosting and garnish also complements the cake with class and taste which makes Cake Man Raven truly a world class establishment.

Cake Man Raven is known for his delicious red velvet cakes. The cake is so moist, it melts in your mouth. The cream cheese frosting is superb! This is the best cake if have ever tasted. The slices aren't little either. At $6.00 a slice it is worth it.

WARNING: You might become addicted!

They offer the best red velvet cake. It is quite a delicacy with it's moist texture and just the right amount of sweetness. The only downside to it is this cake is so popular it often runs out quickly when it does be aware that the store closes so try to get there early.

At $6 a slice, it is pretty expensive. But it is very rich and creamy. I tried the red velvet (without nuts) and the coconut (oddly green color cake). Both were equally good. There was limited seating upstairs but as they don't serve coffee or tea, you're pretty much limited to the water provided by the water cooler upstairs. The staff wasn't rude, they just didn't seem enthusiastic or cheery.

I have to say by far that Cake Man Raven has the best cakes in NYC. I have tried red velvet and other specialties at other well known bakeries like, Make My Cake, Crumbs, and Lord's Bakery among others but by far his cakes are spectacular.
There is always a line at Cake Man Raven's store. This is because they do have a product that is in high demand, popular and delicious.
The neighborhood is fine. The area is right near Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn; by the Brooklyn Academy of Music as well as Atlantic Center Mall.
As far as the customer service that everyone is complaining about: Well I have to say, that I have never had a problem with the customer service. Before going to the store, its best you make up your mind about what you want. Slow orderers make for slow transactions. His menu can be viewed on his website. For special orders: Also, why would anyone want to chance it to pick a cake up at 1:00 for a party the same day at 2:00 or 3:00. (That's like going to pick up your wedding dress an hour before the actual wedding). Anything can go wrong and at that point you will have no alternative. The smart thing to do since there are numerous orders on any given day and the truck may need to make several trips back and forth to bring in the orders, is to have your cake delivered a day before you actually need it and pick it up. This will prevent you from spending the whole day in the store stressing over when your cake is coming as well as assure you that you will have everything in order for yor event. Is it that difficult to put a cake in your refridgerator for one night?? I think not!

I have gone to cake man to get cake and the overall attitude of the staff is that they are doing you a favor by selling cake to you. I try to patronize african american establishments but this attitude makes you want to turn away. I will take my business to Lord's Bakery or Little Red Hens before I come back to this fiasco of a business!
P.S. Dont dare try to call to order a cake. The order dept closes at 7 but they hardly ever answer calls after 4 and their message box is full.

My saga began on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at which time I went to the bakery's website to get information on ordering a cake. As per the instructions I called the phone number given within the 7 day advance notice they needed. After numerous calls throughout the day without anyone picking up the phone I left a message. By Sunday mid-day I still had not recieved a call back. I decided to go to the store for some help, at which point I was told I only can order by calling the number (which no one was picking up). I gave an employee my information and was told she would give my information to the order department and someone would call me back. On Monday, still no call back. I called again and left messages. On Tuesday same story. I went to the store again and another employee gave me his information and told me to call back on Wednesday. Wednesday same story. I called spoke with employee and gave my information. Never heard from him or anybody from the order department. Finally on Thursday, after I repeatedly called and left messages I get a call back and was told no more orders being accepted. The other employee never gave my information and the they have 5 pages of people to call back.

In a tough economy why am I chasing a business to give them my hard earned money when they obviously don't want it. I suggest we show the Cake Man Raven what happens when you neglect your customers. Take your money somewhere else! I will!

It's funny...because I had no idea that Cake Man Raven was not only known for red velvet cake, but for his poor customer service, lack of professionalism, and bad business practices until speaking with some colleagues today and reading the reviews of other patrons. This is probably because I've never really bought the cake on my own. I've just sampled cake from friends. But two weeks ago, I learned firsthand that Cake Man Raven is disgusting. As I ate the red velvet cake that my friend had at her birthday party...I felt some tension between the fork and the cake. When I stuck the fork back in the cake and attempted to reach towards my mouth, the fork got stuck once again. It was then that I realized that the fork was being hindered by several strands of hair that were baked into the cake and now wrapped around my fork. YUCK! I was disgusted to say the last. I immediately threw my slice of cake in the garbage. I didn't contact the Cake Man because I didn't buy the cake. But, I did let my friend know. From what I here, she probably won't get through to complain because they never answer the phone.

If you are not a Celebrity do not order a cake.

I ordered my cake in advance and paid for it in full. I scheduled a pick up for 1:00 Saturday, July 27,2008, when I got to the location at Fulton Street, I was told that my cake wasn't there. I asked where was the cake and why the cake wasn't there, I was told by the clerk. I don't know where the cake is and the driver isn't answering his phone. I traveled from New Jersey to pick-up my cake for a 3:00 event and didn't get the cake until 4:45. I requested a refund and was told I had to wait until Monday 7/28/08. (very poor customer service). I asked for a manager and was told the managers don't wish to speak to the 10 customers whom were upset over not getting their cakes on time. I will never order a cake again from Cakman Raven and have advised all my friends and business clients whom I have sent there as well. The workers kept calling the managers for help in the situation but the managers didn't care at all. Remember before you got to celebrity status the people who got you there.

Pros: Great Cake once you get it

Cons: Will you get it?

It's no secret that the red velvet cake at Cake Man is delicious. Give the pineapple-cream cheese cake a try too. Dangerously addictive. On the downside, I've never seen people take so long to perform a simple transaction, like buying 2 slices of cake for $12. Maybe it's a southern thing, but the people both in the line and at the register seem to do everything really slow. It's maddening.

The Good news is that the cake is tasty, most times. The bad news is that nothing else about the Cake Man experience is good. The store may or may not have cake when you visit. It may or may not taste the same as the last time you purchased it. The store most certainly will NOT have anything other than Red Velvet cake despite having an ample menu of other cakes, pies and cupcakes. If you are hoping to improve your chances by calling and ordering a cake, don't waste your time, as the concept of customer service has not reached the Cake Man yet. Don't expect a prompt return phone call if you attempt to place an order by phone. Don't order a cake for delivery on a Monday as they do not deliver cakes on Monday, but don' t expect to find that information anywhere on their website or brochures. Despite having store hours from 9:00am -10:00 pm, don't expect cake until 12:00 noon. The only way you will be happy with the experience at Cake Man is if you have no expectations whatsoever.

The total experience is so inconsistent that when I need a sweet fix, I'd rather go to Junior's. Junior's is always stocked and they treat their customers with the respect a paying patron deserves. He must be doing so well that he can afford to turn customers away. I will now treat Cake Man and his business as an afterthought, the same way he treats his customers.

This place CAN make the best red velvet cake but......they never have any to sell. Your only allowed to buy two pieces if they have it.......they ask you to wait 45 minutes for the next delivery.....I just can't imagine being in buisness all these years and constantly running out of cake.....That's all they sell too!! .....and the last two times I bought the cake ($6) each....it was stale......

This bakery does make very good red velvet cake. And by my own admission, I frequent this place, but the service is HORRIBLE. I have tried to order a custom cake. I received a quote quickly, then every single email and call was ignored thereafter. I was told that Cakeman would be out of town, the kitchen would be slow, etc. This was an order I was trying to place 6 WEEKS in advance, so there shouldn't have been a problem. I was told by someone else that they had the same experience with a custom order cake. Also, they are not very good at meeting the demand for their cakes and baked goods. Aside from that, if you just so happen to be passing by, and they have cake ready, try it!!!

It is so hard for me to describe my level of frustration with this place. I've gone there several times to get cupcakes and it's pretty much a gamble. I live in New Jersey, so driving through Manhattan to get here can be irritating, but so is arriving somewhere, after calling numerous time to find out if there were even cake slices available, and there aren't any left. And then more foolishness happens.

My boyfriend and I are having a holiday party on the 12/8. Cakeman Raven's website says athat they need 48 hours advance notice for cakes. I began calling on 12/1, 7 days ahead of time. I called 10 times and NO ANSWER. I finally left a message with what I wanted to order and my contact info. I called again the next day, starting at 10am. After another 5 calls and NO ANSWER, I repeated my previous message. The next day, I send an email with my request in addition to several more failed attempts of phone calls and left ANOTHER message. I finally got someone on the phone today, after 4 days of calling and emails. Guess what she told me?! THEY'RE BOOKED! They can not accept any orders for Saturday. I'm done with them!!!

I live in Westchester, but come into Brooklyn often. I love the red velvet cake at the Cakeman bakery, but I must say the service is horrible. I love the red velvet because there is never anything else available. I was so disappointed last weekend when I went and there was nothing left. How can you run a business, with no inventory. I cannot see how much longer can they stay in business if they continue this process. I drive into Brooklyn so that means I have to find a parking space, which is not an easy task. The Cakeman is not worth my time. No one answers the phone, so you cannot call in advance to see if there is any cake available. I know that they are there because the doors are open and they clearly ignore the phone. My recommendation is not to go out of your way for this cake. It is not worth the trip. I am very disappointed.

I recently went to the bakery after hearing for so long of his desserts either on TV and/or through friends that live in the city. They all conveyed that this was "the place" to get a "good" piece of cake. Let me start by saying tastewise the cake was "average", the icing was "great" b/c I love butter icing, the moisture of the cake was "good". The portions were "Very Good", as I had gotten 2 pieces which I was able to share with 2 other people. But I expected more zing as far as taste for coming all the way from New Jersey, this would be somewhere I would stop in if I were visiting friends in Brooklyn, I will not make a "special" trip as I had done for my birthday.
The prices have changed, a slice is now $6 instead of the $5 as I was quoted. Also I got there in the afternoon around 2 or 3 pm thinking I would avoid a crowd and get a good choice of cakes, the selection was VERY limited by the time I had arrived all they had was Red Velvet. I may give it one more shot but I will CALL first to find out what types of cakes their offering for the day, as I wanted to try another type as well. Also I recently saw him prepare a cake on a cooking show and learned a few tricks as to make a cake better. I expected WAY MORE, it reminded me of a local bakery that everyone that lives in Brooklyn frequents after a hard days work or weekend treat. Don't believe ALL THE HYPE, JUST SOME OF THE HYPE....Enjoy!

Pros: Desserts, it's easy to get too by train. Best to go when first opens.

Cons: Limited selections of desserts.

I really don't see what everyone is raving about. I tried the cake because i kept hearing how good it was but it was not good! it was alright. I mean I guess If you like butter creme frosting then you would like this cake. It did not have the original creme cheese frosting it's supposed to have. Yuck! a waist of my 5 dollars.. I've had better.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Best red velvet cake I have ever had, BUT ever time I've gonna there isn't any. I love to eat at Keur N'Deye down the block and since I live in the BX I like to get some cake while in the area. Just never been lucky enough to get there in time to find some cake. Once had to wait and hour and a half for on $6 slice. Wish they had better service.

I'll be honest with you: the cake is fantastic. The Red Velvet Cake is absolutely amazing - incredibly moist and rich as is the cream cheese frosting. The slices (which cost $6 now, not $5) are huge and can easily satisfy three people. There was a point at which I was addicted to this cake, and for good reason. It's delicious.

That said, it's not worth the hassle. Why? Because Cake Man Raven lacks the basic fundamentals of running a service business. We all have places we go in spite of their flaws because the product is so good. But here, you can't even give that benefit of the doubt because you can't get the product.

Lines are out the door, especially on Sunday afternoons when the church crowd lets out. (On Sundays, you have greater odds of getting a smothered pork chop from a mosque than you do of getting a slice of cake.) The price list features a variety of treats, but don't expect to see any of them. They only ever have Red Velvet slices, and if they do, you should be counting your blessings. On any given night you could be turned away.

I used to assume the fundamental lack of service only extended to take-out slices, but after trying to order a cake recently, I found out this is not the case. I consulted the price list on the website which said all cakes had to be ordered two days in advance. I called and left several messages on a Tuesday for a cake I needed on a Friday. When I finally received a call back, I was told that since their renovation, cakes must now be ordered one full week in advance. The price hike on slices also coincided with the renovation, so now you have shiny new tiles to stare at as you wait an interminable span for more-expensive cake that you probably won't even get. Congrats on the new digs, Cake Man!

As much as I love this cake, I've been forced to stop coming. I took me a while to finally catch the hint, but Raven clearly doesn't want my money. Why do I keep trying to throw it at him?

Been here on several occasions. The service is ABSOLUTELY horrible! The staff is unintelligible to say the least. Several times they were out of cake! How you run out of the only item you sell is beyond me. How you achieve having horrible service selling a premade item is beyond belief. The cake was delivered in a storage tub by someone in a minivan. Suffice to say, this is no bakery. You can only order 4 slices of cake at a time. After reading their menu and expecting to order chocolate cake, only one type of cake was delivered--Red Velvet. Incredulous, considering their website has an assorted menu of cakes. After ordering the cake, I will never ever patronize the place again! Not solely because of the service, the cake does not seem to be made from scratch. The cake was good. It tasted just like a cake out of a box--Duncan Hines, etc. At $6 per slice, the wait, the horrible service, the lack of choice, and the similarity to a cake from the grocery aisle makes this a place that is not worth it. While i would love to support a black man in his business pursuits, there are too many PROFESSIONAL bakeries to even waste your time with this "cake man".

Pros: Location

Cons: Service, Price, Selection, Surly Staff, Inadequate Inventory

Best Red Velvet Cake I've ever had and I know cakes.
Worst customer service.
1) Half the staff are great while the other half leave little to be desired.
2) Waiting 30 minutes to 1 hour for 1 slice of cake.
3) Not being able to order a cake in a timely fashion on a non Holiday weekend.
4) Inability to take orders over the phone (I've been calling for the past two days)

The people saying they will never got here again are the same ones who wait online say the same thing and I see them the next time I go.

Great Cake So So Service.

Be prepared to wait 30+ minutes.

This is not a clean place to eat at all. The employees don't wear gloves nor are their hair covered. I bought a few slices of cakes for friends and could not beleive the cake had a long strand of hair baked in. I took it back to the shop and they refussed to take it back. I was Shocked and disappointed with the service I received. And will no longer patronize this bakery. Who knows what else is in the cake?!!!

Wowwwww! I love me some red velvet cake. Not everyone can bake it well. Mr. Cake Man has outdone himself with the red velvet. I didn't wait to get home to taste it. I sat on the bench right outside the shop with my fiance for a little taste. It was everything I thought it would be: Heaven on Earth! I can't wait to go back. I just wish I didn't have to use my debit card to pay for two slices! No lie!

Try everything! You will not be disappointed. Do not miss the pecan pie or the coffee cake. The only reservation I have about this place is they run out fast and close off times.

Just given a slice of red velvet cake for the first time by my co-workers on my birthday. It looked and tasted very moist--huge slice--and it was the best red velvet cake I ever had. Don't know anything about the service, but the flavor is worth waiting in line for.

I've tried a number of times to get through to this place, and they don't answer the phone. I really want to order a cake and pick it up for a party, but I don't have enough time to personally stop by the store. I guess they really don't need the business!

I was at the Tribeca Film Festival today and bought some delicious cupcakes from an elementary school in Tribeca. The red velvet cupcakes was donated from the Cakeman himself and they were out of this world. The cupcake had a wonderful texture and just the right amount of sweetness. The cupcake was just the right size and was such a wonderful treat.

I have walked into this place 1/2 a dozen times, and they never seem to have any slices available--of ANY kind of cake--which is very infuriating. The red velvet cake is divine, but the service is ridiculously unreliable. If you are going to see something at BAM or if you are shopping at Atlantic Center, take a walk over there, but if you are seriously craving a piece of red velvet find yourself a more reliable place.

I've had a sample of this red velvet cake and wanted to buy my own. That's when the problems began. No one answers the phone all day nor do they have an answering machine that will take messages (the recording said the messages were full). When they finally do answer the phone they refuse to let you order a cake without 2 days notice. Nor do they seem to want walk in business - when I asked if I could just come in and see if they had any cakes available I was told that they don't sell cakes at the store, only slices - cakes must be ordered 2 days in advance. How does a bakery not have cakes to sell? Not a very customer savy strategy. Glad I didn't waste my time going there without calling, but now I won't bother to try.

The first time I went here they did not have any cake available....why they were still open...no one knows....so I came back since I heard how wonderful the cakes are...the second time, again nothing was left and they were open but this time one of the many guys behind the counter mentioned that a "red velvet cake" was ready. Okay, I'm not from the south but I'm sure I wouldn't want to be since this cake was not worth going across town to try, especially not at that price....and the red velvet part was more like red food coloring and lots of sugar.

After hearing all of the hype about this cake, finally gave it a try. Have to tell you: Not at all impressed. First try was a bust; the store was closed because they HAD NO CAKE(huh?). Later, it was "open". A stressed mob crushed around the closed door, a worker in front to give updates as yet again, there was no cake ready, but one was "coming". Finally let into the store 5 at a time, to buy expensive slices from a harried staff. Result (red velvet): Great texture, soft and "velvety", nice hint of cocoa. the icing MADE this cake, it was fluffy, not ultra sweet, creamy and light. Good cake BUT: it was not the best cake i've ever had, and definately not worth standing outside on the sidewalk being herded like cattle by indifferent and overworked employees. Average cake thats been courted by a LOT of hype.

You have to wonder why Citysearch hasn't reviewed the sweets here since they are out of this world! I am so addicted to this place! Their Red Velvet cake is awesome, but so is their Coconut Pineapple and even their Chocolate cake is exceptional! Their big cookies are outstanding! Simple chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and peanut butter...just one bite and you are guaranteed to eat the whole cookie! Another treat is their Apple Squares...everything I've picked up in this place has been outstanding! Now if the counter people could be a little more friendly, I might move in!

If your looking for a bakery that specializes in Southern cooking this is the place to go! They have the absolute best Red Velvet Cake there is.. Its tastes just like its homemade.

My mom is a southern belle and she even highly recommends his cakes. 5.00 a slice but 2-3 people can share a slice. Worth every penny
