Just ordered some "standard" chinese food - Chicken and broccoli, spring roll, egg roll - it was so bad I had to throw it out. The food is extremely bland and the chicken is rubbery - like it's not even real chicken. Made me want to

I got sick from the sushi.
Don't eat there.
I ordered spicy tuna, avocado roll, california roll, seaweed salad, and maki eel. I woke up at 4 in the morning feeling completely sick to my stomach.

My boyfriend and I love sushi. We order from Empire at least twice a week. We do pride ourselves on our taste buds being able to distinguish between "decent" sushi to "excellent" sushi. Empire Sushi undoubtedly offers an incredible value for the consistent quality. They do offer a more interesting menu with more creative rolls than your typical budget place. We can always count on the freshness of the sushi/sashimi. One of our favorites is the extremely affordable Green Fuji roll(very refreshing with the red onion). Order the Tokyo roll(not on the menu) for its delightful color combination(feast for your eyes and taste buds). I happen to love the Hamachi Kama(hot appetizer)and was a favorite for many nights because of its simplicity and tenderness but this may not be for everyone because of the large bones. The staff is friendly and helpful. We do also order from their Chinese take-away only menu which is predictable for its traditional westernized Chinese dishes but nonetheless better than most on the UWS. The only negative I can see for Empire is its difficult location and dark interiors.

Cons: Location

Went to Empire for a casual Saturday night dinner and was more then pleasently surprised. The sushi was fresh and made well and the teriyaki was delicious. The place was extremely clean and the decor was nicer then a lot of local sushi places. We will definitely be ordering sushi from here and it will make for great lazy sunday night dinners.

Pros: food, service, decor, value

Cons: none really

I usually avoid Chinese restaurants like the plague since I grew up on fantastic stuff and most restaurants are such a bastardized version of this beautiful cuisine that it pains me to eat there. ESG defied stereotype. The food is actually really well-made (I can at least vouch for the Szechuan dishes that we ordered). Even the sushi wasn't too bad--and it's well priced. The staff is lovely: attentive and friendly without being saccharin or overbearing. Admittedly the decor isn't so much to look at (looks better from inside than from out), but it's fine for a casual night out.
