Came here with a friend one weekday lunch.
We had a chicken wrap and a Sushi bento box (bento served at lunch time only)
Mine was the wrap- it was a nice size and came with a few small sides. More like bite-sized sides, though, like the Korean places do it. Good flavor in the chicken marinade, and served a sweet brown sauce and a spicy mayo sauce that complemented the dish well.

Friend had the sushi bento which looked amazing from what I could tell, and she seemed to enjoy that as well.

I've been to Shoku a few times and I have no complaints about the food, but the service is terrible. On a slow Sunday we waited foreveeeeeeer for our check and practically everything else. It was painful.

2 for dinner outside. Requested a table with umbrella, but told only for parties of 4. 10 minutes later party of 2 seated at larger table with Umbrella. Patio never filled up.

Food very slow, boring.

Server was nice and apologetic, but clear she couldn't fix it. Sever was not knowledgeable on food or sake'.

Sorry.

Wow, I should have taken the previous reviews to heart. But we went anyway. This establishment has the worst service in town and is only topped by the poor quality food. It took 30 min to take our order, and 40 min after that to deliver the cold food. Item ordered does not mention it is spicy but couldn't even eat more than a forks worth and ended up splitting the spouses tastless cold entree. The place is small and we were one of three tables in attendence that night. You are better off just going to McDonalds. At least at McDonalds you get the poor quality quickly, so you can move on with your life! Tried to mention the issues to the manager but after waiting for her to show up for 13 min we left. This is the place to go if you want poor service....you even have to wait to mention the problems. If you like terrible service and poor quality food than this is the place to go, if not avoid this place.

I had been a big fan of Shoku for many years. It has been a bit since I last visited. I was told by several friends that their recent visits had been disappointing. I should have listened. I had a chicken dish that was awful. When I informed my waitress she just looked at me and smiled.
We spent $50.00 for two, without drinks, on this dinner. Save your money and go elsewhere. One additional comment goes to the service. It was poor, poor & poor. It was not at all busy, yet we were an after thought for our waitress.

Pros: CLOSE TO MY HOME

Cons: POOR FOOD QUALITY AND SERVICE

.

I had such high hopes for Shoku, as it came with good recommendations from friends in the Grandview area. I now have to conclude they know nothing about sushi.

I ordered the sweet potato roll and the veggie tempura roll with asparagus and squash. I asked if the chef could leave out the fried onion from my sweet potato roll, and the waitress said it would be no problem. She was wrong. My roll had almost more onion than anything else in it. In addition to which, other than onion flavor, the roll was pretty tasteless. My other roll - veggie tempura - was so bizarre. The veggies were steamed, rolled, and then the ENTIRE ROLL was battered and deep fried, not to mention that they didn't use tempura batter at all, but a bread crumb batter. Again, pretty tasteless, other than the flavor of deep fryer with old oil in it. My friend ordered several rolls with fish in them, and commented that they were entirely tasteless. She ordered one with spicy salmon in it, which had no spice, and one with cilantro. It seems they were OUT of cilantro, however, as the chef substituted parsley instead. Overall, in the rolls, ingredients were either missing, overused, old, or just ill-prepared.

The rolls were made very loosely, so that they fell apart as I tried to eat them, and they were so big, I couldn't comfortably eat a piece at once. This resulted in MORE sloppiness, as I had to take more than one bite to finish a piece. Finally, the pieces were sliced so thin that it became difficult to pick them up, further adding to the mess on my plate. I should have just asked for a fork.

The waitress was pleasant enough when talking to us, but seemed distracted, despite the fact that we were her only table. Furthermore, even though there was almost no one in the restaurant, we were hurried out almost as soon as we had finished our rolls. We still had wine in our glasses, but the waitress seemed to want us to get on our way. Finally, when we got our bill we realized that we were about to way over pay for what was at best a below-average experience. $9 for a veggie roll?!? So very over-priced for the overall quality. I'm sorry to say this Shoku, but you're not going to be in business long if you don't make some changes. Like, you know, flavor in your food.

If you're looking for good sushi in town, so far, Nida's is in the lead. My friends and I are on a quest to find the best, and have tried Nida's on High, Shoku, and Restaurant Hama at Easton. Nida's is far and away the best so far.

We had high expectations for Shoku and they failed to meet them. Started out with the tuna tataki (lightly seared tuna) and it was terrible. Chewy and a fishy taste. The miso soup, edamame and Dragon roll were actually all good, but nothing about any of those things screams sushi since it is almost all cooked. My only recommendation is that Haiku has much better food and atmosphere if you want sushi. I am still searching for a good spot in Columbus if anyone knows of one.

My girlfriend and I have wanted to try this place for awhile now. We always sit at the sushi bar when we go out for sushi, unfortunately we were sat next to the meanest old korean lady we have ever seen. She was so rude to the staff the entire time we were there. Our server actually apologized to us because we had to sit next to where she eats. She kept yelling at the servers for no apparent reason. As far as we could see she has no reason to be there, except to be mean to her staff. It wasnt just the servers either, she was possibly meaner to the kitchen staff. Our server also told us there is alot of staff turnover, we quickly understood why. Who would want to work for such a mean old lady?? She single-handedly ruined our experience at Shoku, and we will not return solely based upon the fact that she will still be there. This is a shame because this restaurant has great potential, but she is holding it back. The owner needs to wise up and get her out of there!

My experience was so bad that I joined Citysearch as soon as I got home just to warn you guys of this place.

First of all, they refused a gift certificate that we had but at least they were honest about it and told us before we ordered. Since this was my first time there, we decided to give them a try anyways - bad idea. I had a bad feeling about this place when they claim to be a Japanese restaurant yet mispelled Nabeyaki Udon as Nabuyaki Udon on the menu.

It took them over 30 mins just to get us only a couple pieces of sushi. Not only that, every single aspect of their sushi was bad.
1. The sushi rice was warm - it is supposed to be room temperature!
2. The rolls were made by a total amateur. The seaweed on the sushi was broken and torn causing whatever was inside to spill out.
3. They did not use sushi rice (short grain rice)
4. THE FISH WAS NOT FRESH - it left such a nasty fishy taste in your mouth - a sign of spoiled fish.

Nothing about this place is good besides the fact that our water was refilled promptly. The food is way way overpriced for what you get. Come on Shoku, $18 for chicken? Who do you think you are, Mitchell's Steakhouse? At least at Mitchell's you are getting great service and atmosphere. Shoku is a dump and so is the food.

Avoid this place at all cost.

If you like sushi and you live in Columbus, there's no reason not to go here. I'm loyal to Haiku, but went to Shoku with my husband and four friends Saturday night, and was very pleasantly surprised! I've read some bad reviews on here, and I just don't get it. We ordered 8 or 9 kinds of sushi, and all of it was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was much better than I thought it would be. The decor is lovely, and our waiter was absolutely wonderful. I will definitely go back.

I have been to Haiku and Shoku many many times. I have finally decided that Shoku is better. I have never had a bad meal at Shoku and the restaurant is clean! The service is dull and somewhat slow, but I have yet to come across anyone rude. The price is a little high for the amount of food you receive, but it is delicious. Overall good.

I went into shoku three times to be fair before i critiqued the establishment. The food was always overcooked, the rice was yellow, and the freshness was extremely questionable. Two out of the three times i ate there, people were arguing at the top of there lungs. I paid $12 for a roll that consisted of two shrimp and mayonnaise w/ tempura flakes on top. I ordered a tofu dumpling soup twice in a row(1st and second visit) and it was a totally different dish each time. My guest ordered a salad that contained moldy lettuce. We ordered an almond beef which contained the fattiest yet very dry misc. beef and absolutely no almonds. To end the meal, i had some mango ice cream that was freezer burnt and the worst cup of coffee i have had since high school. The clincher is the price. We paid $60 for the worst meal i could remember in a decade. You'd be better off spending $20 at your fast food Asian restaurant because you won't feel like an idiot for spending so much on poorly made food. Good luck Shoku.

I was prompted to write a review after I read the last couple - my experience at Shioku was great and I would return in a heartbeat. We just walked by on a sunday evening and decided to stop in. We were seated immediately on the patio, and the waitstaff was friendly. I was suprised to discover that they are BYOB on Sundays, and they recommended a great wine shop across the street. The sushi was excellant, can't wait to go enjoy another sunday evening there!

My friends and I just ate at Shoku and the service was horrendous. Our waitress was very rude and treated us like we were interrupting her day. (I got better service at the movie theater concession stand later that night). When we asked for something, she barely answered us and walked away. I called the manager after we left, and she was as clueless as the waitress was rude! She also poured water down a customer's leg at the next table over--not only did she not apologize, she didn't even acknowledge that she did it! The food was ok but it's definitely not worth that kind of service!

2nd time there- at a table for 45 minutes. No drinks, no edamame, no sushi - only 3 tables in the entire restaurant during lunch. Ridiculous. Don't waste your time - sushi wasn't that great, Kooma downtown has much better service, better sushi, and better prices!

The atmosphere is pleasant enough but the food is about as Americanized as you can get. I ordered pad thai and it came without cilantro, lime or chili sauce. When i asked for these things, the waiter said that they stopped carrying them because the Americans didn't know how to eat pad thai and they went to waste. The sushi was also small. If you want good Asian Fusion, Haiku is MUCH better and about the same price.

For real sushi fan, this is the place. Is always clean, fresh. Staff is turned over in recent years but same owner, same manager...same grandma watching over. Anyone who complains about a wait for sushi.........needs to get a fish sandwich and McDonalds.....you wait for sushi....eat, drink, enjoy.

Of course you are there and you see any 5'4 short angry old men at a table with a date for hire...move on, he is a mean one...Other than that, it is still best dining experience in the 43212 zip......Next time you go, tell them DON CORNELIUS send you.....one day I will tell them it is me...Peace, Love, and Soooooooooooooul train.

We were not impressed with Shoku restaurant service at all.I thought the staff would at least have attempted to clean the restaurant to better to accommodate the needs and desires of all of their valued customers.Since they did not we chose to go elsewhere.

my wife and i, went to shoku on a whim thinking it would be a nice place to eat as we have heard, yet the service was only okay at best, at least for us, other tables near us seemed to have better service. our 45+ minute wait for sushi that was seemingly unfresh was almost unbearable. the restaraunt wasn't even very busy. to somewhat ruin our otherwise quite evening, there was an older woman yelling at the staff quite loudly in front of patrons as if we were'nt there at all, i must assume she is a manager of sorts. how rude and impolite, and completely unprofessional. i myself own and operate a restaraunt and such occurences would never be allowed in my establishment. if i felt it would be worth my time, the owner(s) would hear about our horrible experience, but we won't ever be returning.

The atmosphere at Shoku is nice, but the service is POOR. My friends and I waited on our sushi for well over an hour on a tuesday night. We didn't see our server the entire time and asked a blonde 'manager' if she could check on our food. We informed her that it had been over an hour waiting for our sushi at which point she argued with us and refused to help. When the sushi finally came the portions were poor. One of my friends commented on this and over hearing us the waiter promptly came to the table and commented that 'if we wanted a large meal maybe we should try mcdonalds'. I worked at a sushi restaurant for quite some time and was absolutely DISGUSTED by my experience there.

I would not suggest going if I were you. You'd probably have a better shot at good customer service at the mcdonald's drive through.

The rolls and sushimi were not fresh and was probably the smallest porion I've ever seen a a resturant, this after taking 40 mins even though there were 6 people in the resturant. After complaining to the waiter, he said "thats too bad, you're in Ohio." I've had much better experiences in Ohio, and won't be back

Four of us went on a Saturday night and were disappointed. The hostess seemed board and clueless, we were crammed around a tiny table and the waiter was mostly MIA. There was a large LCD TV on the wall which was distracting, especially when CSI came on with bloody images of a small girl getting her throat cut. (We had them change the channel.) The food was relatively expensive and pedestrian. Will not return. Do Haiku instead.

We went on a quiet Sunday night, found street parking, were seated immediately, and had an enjoyable, healthy, fresh meal. The Rainbow Rolls and Spicy Tuna were particularly good. My husband loved the spinach salad appetizer. The vegetable tempura was lovely, but I suspect it was not deep fried in a dedicated vegetarian fryer. That is my only complaint, but I should have asked first. The chef mixed up our order a bit and so we got way more food than we ordered and didn't pay extra for it. Abundant, prompt service with smiles and pretty yellow walls and mood lighting added to the experience. We definitely like this place better than Haiku.

The food was not good. The service was too slow. They charged more money from my credit card, and it took a long time to get back.

I want to make it a personal goal to prevent any human being from going to Shoku.

My girlfriend and I had wanted to try this restaurant. We got seated, our server came, showed us the wine list, and said she would come back. The server assistant gave us water.

We waited for 25 minutes while our server came by a dozen times to check on all the tables around us, take the food order of the table next to us. The We decided to leave. I asked to see the manager. She defended her server telling us she just "forgot about us".

I was an assistnat manager of a restaurant, a server, and bartender. You do not forget when people are sitting in your section.

Perhaps we weren't dressed fancy enough to merrit attention, perhaps my unattractive face scared our server off, either way we were mistreated.

When my boyfriend and I stepped in the doors of the Shoku restaurant we were truly amazed. Not only were we seated quickly we were greated with a smile by ever staff member of Shoku. We really enjoyed the back bar area. The mood lighting is excellent. The food is awesome, however, it is pricey. The staff are more than willing to answer any and all questions you may have. Over all I have enjoyed my expirence at Shoku & will be there this weekend!

Pros: Great atmosphere, Great Wait Staff, awesome decor

Cons: Pricey

Definitely one of the best ambiences for a shushi bar in Columbus. The location is splended (the Banc Bloc in Grandview is a beautiful setting.) However, the portions seem a bit small for the price especially considering there are at least a half dozen sushi restraunts in town that have same or better pricing and bigger portions!

Hey Gang,

The food at shoku is serious. I am telling you, this place is not your traditional asian place. I don't eat sushi but the food is a 10.

Hey,

For all you squares out there in Squareville, try this place. It is a lot of fun and the food maybe the best around.

The only issue I had was that the place can be loud.

peace out,

allen

I feel that the atmospehere is great and the overall feel gives a traditional, but modern feel to it. The is very well prepared from the pea pods to the King crab rolls.

Cons: no parking, some of the prices

The food was good, the decor was good, the service was good. But, it wasn't great. Sure, the menu has fun choices like a wrap (aka burrito) with a sukiyaki flavor dipping sauce. And, the sushi list includes fun variations. But, my tuna roll packed a punch with a major dose of wasabi inside; it wasn't successful at hiding the muted flavor of the tuna and seaweed. The waiters and waitresses were constantly passing my table, back and forth. A few touches could make this place great.

It's okey. I don't mind going back there sometimes. If you agree with me that PF Chang is not authentic Chinese, then Shoku is the same. It's not authentic Japanese, but it's not bad. It's more of gathering and drinking place for young people than enjoying food quietly.

My first experience was thursday night. I had heard about this place from all my friends. They really like all the hot chicks from the staff to the customers. They are right the chicks are the best in town! The food and service was not far behind.
DUDES THIS IS THE PLACE FOR ASIAN CHICKS!

Yes, everyone is doing Pan-Asian and sushi these days---but Shoku does it better than most, cooking up truly original specials in addition to the Japanese-Thai-Chinese selections you would expect to find elsewhere. The decor makes striking…
