I grew up eating cookies, cupcakes, and other pastries from the Downtown Bakery. After graduation, I moved to Columbus, but I still have a few family members in the Ville. When i go home for a visit, a trip for smiley face cookies & thumb prints is a must. They are a little pricey, but well worth it. Next stop, DiCarlos Pizza!
I really enjoy the birthday cakes. Personally I think they are THE best around! The carmel long johns are AWESOME! The smiley cookies FANTASTIC. The pumpernickle bread is so fresh and YUMMY.
Sadly, I do have a complaint about 2 products.
The cake donuts are no longer on my list of things to buy there---they are fresh , however, they leave a greasy feel after you eat them. I don't know if it is in the mix of the donut or the icing.
Also the little devil cakes (chocolate cake with white icing in the middle and ontop) These are DELICIOUS but the past few times I have gotten them they are stale. Even if I ask if they are fresh and I am told yes...but they are not
Suggestion. I would rather have them from the freezer and thaw them myself than have stale.
I LOVE CAKES AND LONG JOHNS :)
i used to get all my cakes from downtown bakery .. now i think they have the delusion that they are the cake boss or ace of cakes .. i tried to get a round two tiered birthday cake here and was told that because it was round and two tiers one on top of the other that it was now a wedding cake .. i was quoted 90 bucks as well .. the two cakes i got before that were basically just not what was ordered but what they felt like doing .. one the purple roses had bled into the white base of the typical sheet cake and the other they were told wvu colors and i picked up a pastel blue and yellow cake .. i would recommend Suzie Q in warwood i got a round two tiered cake there for 50 bucks rather than 90 and it was gorgeous and delicious ..
I'm surprised that the pastry is as good as it is considering one of the bakers is drunk all the time. The one with black hair (which I have found in my pastry before) & glasses is a real liability to this wonderful bakery. Myself and some others I know have stopped shopping there because of his very unprofessional like attitude. He might be an asset if he wasn't so drunk and belligerent. I feel sorry for the other employees.
These cookies are sooooo good that when i come to visit my first stop is to the bakery even before i see any family or friends. Usually i will have 3 dozen for the entire time i'm there which is typically no longer than 4-5 days. If you are ever in Steubenville going to the downtown bakery is a MUST!
Downtown bakery has been my favorite of mine since I was old enough to eat cookies. Their signature is a simple sugar cookie with yellow frosting in the shape of a smiley face. I have raved about the downtown bakery's signature cookie to everyone and even have my husband ordering them to be shipped to Texas every other month or so maybe more. You can't beat a bakery that you'll order treats from when you live almost a thousnad miles away.
The Downtown Bakery is the best pastry shop in Steubenville. They have a wide variety of pastries from basic cookies to extravagant wedding cakes. Their staff and bakers are very friendly and willing to help even the pickiest customers. The only parking in the area is on street parking and during the busier parts of the day it is a little difficult to find a spot. I would recommend The Downtown Bakery to anyone who is looking for dessert.
