Watch Out!

It's a real shame that we decided to use Highland Mechanical to service our furnace when we were having trouble. The reviews that we read online suggested that they were a trustworthy source; Unfortunately we learned otherwise. For the home owner or business owner looking for good honest service, I urge you to search elsewhere and not make the same mistake that we did. We first called them to fix an issue that was causing the furnace to do an emergency shut off because the flame was going out, we were charged $130 for them to drive out and turn the furnace off and back on again and say that it looks good. When the problem came back we called them again and they recommended a cleaning and inspection, which they did including an inspection of the oil line, they immediately said that they knew what the problem was, the transformer. They swapped that out and said that everything was working fine and charged us $450 or so, (they charge extra because they include the inspection). The next day when we woke up to cold showers again, we scheduled them to come by to find and fix the real problem. Over the next week they came back 2 more times charging for replacement of the electrodes and oil pump and them saying that everything looks good, I'm not really sure why we were still going with them at this point We have paid them over $800 at this point. The next morning we woke up to cold showers, we asked them again to come back to see if they could find the real problem, they suggested the oil line, which they charged extra to inspect earlier. They were unwilling to offer us anything short of their full price and them telling us basically they did their 'best', and we had the choice whether or not we follow their recommendations; we did not have them replace it. I would normally be glad to support a local business, their technicians seemed friendly and capable. unfortunately I don't there is any question where their bottom line lies. I hope you have better luck than we did in finding good service.

the problem started with the smell of gas around the gas water heater. gas company sent out a tech immediately with a detector. he tested for gas and found levels above normal around the burner upon startup. he left with the diagnosis "intermittent gas to burner without ignition".

i called highland mechanical and was explained a $89 diagnosis fee. the tech came, using his nose as the detector - he smelled nothing. he then turned the heater on/off 6 times and determined no issue. he called his boss bob and discussed the problem for about 10min. the tech then spent another 5min explaining to me the multiple safety features of the heater, saying that if there is any abnormal gas leakage the heater would shut off automatically. he slapped on another $96.96 fee on top of the diagnosis fee for his time which was a surprise to me.

when i called the office regarding the additional fee, they explained that since there was nothing wrong with the unit the tech had to charge extra to run a "complete diagnosis".

also, within the last 2 months i've asked 3 times for an estimate to add a heater in the garage. bob has never called back.

i guess they can afford not to have customers. i will not use nor recommend their service.
