We discovered the children's experience center at DAI over the winter and have been back several times since. My four year old twins love it there! The area is contained and not far from the bathroom which is always a plus. Lots of hands on stuff and it changes pretty often too.
I don't know exactly when they started the free admission, but it's a great deal! The building is beautiful and fun to explore all the galleries. The setting on the river with a great view of downtown is nice too.
It's fun for all ages, so don't skip it!

Pros: Great kids place and free admission

Cons: Have to drive thru construction to get to downtown

I grew up in a city with a huge art museum, and it was a pleasant surprise to find Dayton's Art Institute on a par with bigger museums. Free parking is a huge perk, and the location is lovely (right by the river for walks on nice days). The exhibits are nicely laid out, and one of our favorite rooms is the modern art exhibit, which changes often. Currently they're having a traveling Egyptian exhibit which is a must-see. There is also a hands-on children's gallery, though i'd like to see the displays down there change soon. There are no places to eat nearby, and the museum's cafe is expensive and not kid-friendly, so pack a lunch to eat outside on good days or plan to drive elsewhere to eat.

PROS: Good location, comprehensive collection, free parking
CONS: Expensive cafe, static children's gallery

The Dayton Art Institute is a massive establishment that offers a lot to look at. Admission is mostly free, though there are a few paid specialty exhibits. Staff is incredibly nice, theres a giftshop that has plenty of souvenirs and the chance to view some great art is always a welcome to my weekend!

This is a wonderful place to walk around and just listen to the quiet! There is a large selection of various types of art. Oftentimes there are special exhibits that you can see. My favorite has been the Dale Chihuly glass exhibit. There is a nice restaurant as well. This is not a place that I would take small children however.
