Horrible service at UA. I signed up with the YMCA Express in Landen. Worth the drive...The people are nice, no hassles...and its part of the world's largest YMCA in Lebanon Ohio. So you get the best of both worlds. Check them out.

This is the worst club ever!!! Bad customer service and its such a hassle to quit/cancel membership!!! They wont cancel your membership unless you come in and when you do they conveniently lose your cancellation notice. When you call in they wont return calls and continue to charge you. I've tried to cancel multiple times since and they continue to say they wont unless I come in. Urban Active you made the mistake to loose the paperwork and you make the members suffer to cancel? It really should not be this hard to cancel!! Its a bad practice to keep being in the bad light. I should have figured this would happen given all the bad rap you get in the news - why dont you learn from your mistakes and try to have good customer service !! Awful Awful Awful - worst gym by far in Ohio!
This article just says it all - should have been a red flag - F - by the BBB - that sounds accurate!

If I could rate this company with 0 stars I would! They are nothing but thieves who have found a legal way to steal from you. Their customer service is non-existant and they will take you for every penny they can! They make cancelling your membership worse than a grand jury indictment ask very personal questions that have no business asking!
Save your money, privacy and sanity and go jog outside!

I read about 30 of the reviews on here and agree with all of them. All they care about is money, they dont really care about helping people. They will hound you and hound you to sell you more stuff until they finally see you enough to recognize you and remember that you told them to blow it out their a** 20 times. Other than the sales type culture of this place, there seems to be no management in the building, its a bunch of 20 somethings running the place. Not to say thats too bad, im 27, but there is no management.
The bathrooms are always gross, and sometimes the locker room smells horrendous, the movie projector used to be busted, i havent been back in the theatre room in a while.

on a good note, i signed up for a 2 year membership and it equalled out to about 14 bucks a month. its just like buying a car, you can negotiate, they will give in. they want you to join. they started me off at 20 a month for 2 years, so 480 bucks, i got it down to about 280-300.

for me, a 27 year old guy who just goes by himself its a great deal. its close to work, i go 3x a week, do my lifting and eliptical machine and leave. i had to deal with about 2 months of sales pitches, but 14 bucks a month is a great deal, if i can get the same deal out of them once its up, ill sign up again.

I worked for Unban Active in Erlanger for about eight months as a personal trainer, everything I have read on here is true. Urban active cares only about money.

They preached to all personal trainersto get people to upgrade packages, and to get quick results without truly helping people maintain a healthy lifestyle for the long term.

At one point they gave us nutrition packets to hand out to clients: 1) Nutritional advice is well beyond the scope of practice for personal trainers. 2) I had my professor review it (he's an MSed, ATC who was then pursueing his Doctoral degree), he basically told me it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. That packet was written by the regional manager or someone of that position.

Urban Active has plenty of style, but no substance.

I joined Urban Active in Florence, KY about 10 months ago. I got the $19.99 monthly deal. For the past seven months I have been charged $19.99 and $29.99. I have called and visited the managers. I was told I would need to write a letter to corporate and it had to be notarized. That's been 5 months ago. I am still being charged this extra $29.99 to date. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM EVEN FOR FREE!!!!!!! I would be delighted if terrorists crashed a plane into that place.

I HATE this gym. The customer service is absolutely repulsive.
I am a minor, not retarded. Yet, every time I enter the gym I am circled by salespeople trying to sell me crap. One time (the LAST time), I actually bought something. The next day I realized how much I really didn't want what I had bought, so I went through the ridiculously difficult cancellation process not 24 hours later.
I was told everything would be fine and I would be refunded.
That was over a month ago.
Now, not only did they not refund my initial contract but they charged me instead for an entire adult gym membership!!
Of course, now they are taking their sweet freaking time refunding now my 14.95$ AND the 29.95$ that I never asked for to begin with. I have never been so irritated in my life.
They can go f*ck themselves.

I want to express a viable complaint against the staff at Urban Active in Florence KY. I had a pair of $290.00 sunglasses stolen from me after leaving them with the front desk (a employee named Jayson) to hold during my workout (8/24/11). Upon learning they were stolen, I left my name and number with Brittany (a MGR) and still never heard back. When I went to speak with her today she was rude and apathetic to my complaint. So, I have made numerous visits to check the status of their search for my sunglasses, and no progress has been made. It has been 1 week already, and after speaking with the GM today I am at an impasse. He informed me that I was the irresponsible one for leaving my sunglasses with the front desk, even AFTER they were in Urban Active's possession! I have been a paying member since 2009, and even recently considered signing up for a personal training package with Jonathan. Without resolution, and no attempt on Urban Active's behalf to appease the situation, I am forced to write this review. If anyone would like to reach me, my number is with the Florence store.

To the people who have commented that there isn't a problem go fly a kite. There are thousands of complaints its obvious that if this many people are having problems there is an issue. So much in fact that a lawyer is currently suing them and probably going to turn it into a class action. Here is the link so the lawyer can help you too.

You can also email the lawyer in charge of the case, his name is Mark Troutman. He lists his email address as urbanactiveclassaction@isaacbrant.com

Signed contract for tanning that included automatic payments deducted from my checking account. During the strong armed sales pitch, was told I could cancel any time. Asked to cancel after one month. Was told it needed to be in writing. Downloaded form, filled it out, brought it in - NOT ACCEPTABLE. Was told I needed to fax the form in to corporate- actually was on the phone with employee who walked me through the process as I did it. Found out today (about a month later) I AM STILL BEING BILLED! Called and was told they have never accepted faxed cancellations! Now I find out that I have to fill out form, send it REGISTERED MAIL, and submit a TEN DOLLAR CANCELLATION FEE! Was told initially that the first month's payment was to cover the last month's bill. So why the ten dollars? To his credit, the guy at the club was pleasant but said he listens to outraged customers every day. This one month of tanning has turned into a THREE MONTH NIGHTMARE.

My family signed up for a family membership at the West Chester Urban Active in May of 2010. They were offering the family membership for $999.00 which was buy 12 months get 12 months free and included unlimited tanning and unlimited guest priviledges sounds to good to be true doesn't it? This was the sales pitch and the reason we joined. Tommy sold us the contract, he along with the sales manager at the time Jamie were the nicest people. I'm sure they still are thats why they no longer work for Urban Active.

My daughter went tanning a couple of days ago and was told that she didn't have tanning priviledges and would have to pay. I talked to Aaron and was told that the family plan was only for 4 people and we have 5 people in our family so we were probably given 5 people and therefore they took off the tanning. Oh really?? We have been going tanning for almost a year now with no problems and now they tell us we can't. I guess it's because we have been there almost a year and technically only paid for 1 year with the buy one get one free. Aaron in sales/customer service (really?) was very rude and told me that we could buy my daughter a tanning membership. Problem is we already did and now they are trying to take it from us!

My mistake is that I can not find my contract. Whatever you do hold on to your contract they will scam you! He said he had a signed copy scanned in the computer but if I find mine he will honor it. He said mine says nothing about tanning. I said why does it matter if I find mine if you have a signed copy. He said well if yours says something different then we will honor it. Ok... I thought he had a copy... guess they made up their own copy. Just make sure you know what your buying and hold on to proof!

We have enjoyed our time at the gym but they don't appreciate us having a membership there. Very rude and the customer is never right at Urban Active. I was told yesterday that Tommy still worked there but wasn't in, and when I called today to speak with him the same guy Aaron told me he was no longer with the company!

I am so unbelievably disappointed in this gym. It's a beautiful facility with a lot to do, but their customer service is the absolute WORST I've ever encountered in any type of business.

I joined less than a week ago. I called in the morning to ask about memberships, and was told to come in and talk to a specific staff member and that he'd be there all day. I went in shortly after, and once I finally found the place (pretty much in a stairwell in a parking garage), I went to the desk and asked to speak to the staff member I'd talked to on the phone. I was told "he's not here, you can wait," very rudely. I waited for 25 minutes, no indication of when he'd be back or any acknowledgement from any of the staff. Finally the staff member approached me. I took a tour of the gym with him and he explained things very well. No complaints there, but after that it went downhill. I met with a trainer who insisted I schedule an introductory appointment. I was told we would build a program for what I felt I needed. I thought it may be helpful, so I said fine and scheduled for Monday.

Monday evening came and I called to confirm my appointment time. A woman answered and asked how to direct my call. All I could get out was "I have an appointment tonight..." before she snapped at me and told me to HOLD ON!!!! repeatedly. I couldn't even get out that I wanted to check the time. I hung up immediately.

I showed up 10 minutes early for my appointment. My trainer was sitting RIGHT THERE, but the person I checked in with (who was standing next to him) told me he wasn't in and I could go warm up and he'd be with me in 5. 30 minutes later, no trainer, so I went to the desk again. A different employee told me he must've forgotten and I'd have to reschedule. At this point I'd had it with them and told him I absolutely would not reschedule and I'd prefer to scrap the whole thing. He suddenly got very defensive and told me he'd just take the appointment. After a few minutes with him, my initial trainer decided to work with me instead. We worked out for about 15 minutes, not showing me anything I could do on my own, before he pulled me aside for the most abusive sales pitch I've ever been subjected to. When I refused to buy a training package, he got very irritated, insisting that I could afford $60 extra a month to invest in "not being fat." Last I checked, this guy wasn't my accountant, and has no business knowing how I spend money or calling a medium-size girl fat. The real waste would be giving these people any money to be ignored, given a half-assed workout, then verbally assaulted for not buying their crap. I will be cancelling my membership today. DON'T BOTHER!

Anyone having fraudulent credit card charges from this place needs to file a complaint with Ohio Attorney General's office. That should get their attention. I have been trying to quit my "month to month" membership (at The Greene in Dayton) for 6 months now and my credit card is still getting charged. Jessica (the cust. service manager) says that I just need to keep paying my dues until they LET ME QUIT because I signed a paper allowing them to charge my credit card. I told her that I never signed anything to allow charges AFTER I cancel my membership. Also, everytime I try to quit I have to send in additional $20 in cancellation fees again (and again and again apparently). Stay far away from this place.

Urban Active is a great gym, they have a size & price that is great ... the problem is that they have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! They don't pay enough to keep anyone around from sales to front desk there seems to an almost complete turnover every quarter. When you call & ask for a corporate number they say they can't even call corporate. But now you can! THE CORPORATE NUMBER IS 859-252-5993!

This gym is great unless you try to quit. I had to TRY to cancel my membership last July. I provided proof that I was moving to Chicago and the guy at the gym made it seem like we were all set. It is February and I am still trying to cancel this membership. Luckily the credit card they were charging has expired so now I have "deliquent charges" that they expect me to pay. Stay away from this gym unless you're prepared to commit for a lifetime.

My husband and I joined UA-Westlake when they were Gold's Gym. The first couple of years were great - no complaints. I even hired a wonderful personal trainer who used to train the Cleveland Browns. He was fantastic but has since left.

However, in the past couple of months, things have totally changed. I am overweight - I admit it - I am not proud of that. However, the personal training salespeople focus on me like a laser beam almost every time I go to the gym trying to sell me something. I am so f*cking sick of this I could scream. I have asked mgt to tell them not to bother me, but this hasn't worked. I am going to send a letter to the president and voice my concerns. I DO NOT LIKE TO BE INTERRUPTED WHILE I'M DOING MY CARDIO OR WEIGHTS!!! I don't interrupt the personal trainers while they are working with their clients - why do they feel the need to bother me when I just want to be left alone?! The guy yesterday said "It's my job to talk to people while they're working out so if I can make some recommendations as to what they can do better, they can do it". BS! He just wanted to try to sell me something. I get that I can be more fit - however, I know what to do - I had a trainer for over a year - I just need to do it. I don't want to be harassed. Furthermore, when my HR is in the zone, I can not carry on a conversation nor do I care to. Stay away from these predators!

I have been trying to get a correction on charges from membership for over 6 months. Even talked with Britney their customer service manager. Never returns call or follows up. They made a mistake on my membership and charges but yet don't seem to care or want to help.

I felt I had to come here and let everyone know that that despite some of the comments here this is a very high quality gym.
It seems like the majority of the complaints stem from confusion over how a contract works. You're supposed to read it first, and then sign it after making sure you agree to everything in. When you go out of order you start to run into problems. Some of the contract terms are a little unorthodox, but none of it is hidden from you.
Now, on to the parts that actually matter. I've been a member of one of the Columbus gyms for more than 2 years, and I have been very happy with it. The building itself is massive, and has more machines than I know how to use. Like any other gym they have plenty of cardio machines spread around the building, but this Urban Active also has some in a darkened room that plays movies while you run/bike. All in all I have been very pleased with this gym and will continue to use it for the foreseeable future.

Urban Active has changed the billing to month to month, the workers are friendly and helpful, if you work at GE then you get a discount and the abundance of excellent equipment is maintained well. They have several classes to chose from and air conditioning and music to keep a motivational environment enjoyable to excercise in.

If everyone who has been lied to, misled, robbed from and taken advantage of by the incredibly dishonest people at Urban Active would show up at the company headquarters in Lexington at the same time, maybe they'd see that we are, first off, humans, and secondly really upset. A few dozen very loud protesters and a handful of TV cameras might get their attention.

In the meantime, do this, call, email and send letters to your local TV station, Mention all of the complaints your've heard, including your own, and ask them to at least approach the company to make the dishonest practices known and force some sort of response. This company does not want the very bad and very public press. Write letters to the editor. Write letters to the company. Call in to local radio talk shows. All of these things bring negative press to Urban Active. If enough of us do it, maybe E. Laurance Paul, Royce Pulliam, Stephen Paul, and Tomi Pulliam, all the owners, will get the message.

PS. Be sure to include in your correspondance to the media that Urban Active Fitness holds an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau.

I did not read the contract properly, 3 years. My mistake on that. But my 3 years is up and they are intentionally making it difficult to cancel. The manager literally admitted to me that they make the cancellation process difficult in order to keep people around longer than they want.!!! (after the contract) Once you mail in the form and confirm you have they received it, you will still be charged that month and the next!!! This place is a joke and they will actually admit it. A total insult to American business

Whatever you do, do not join this gym unless you know you will never move. I moved for work during my membership. I was assured when I signed up (b/c I knew a transfer was possible) that if that happened I would just need to show proof. That was six months ago and I STILL have not satisfied these people that I did in fact move. I have given them a contract, driver's license, pay stub, and all were rejected. Add to that the corporate office cannot be contacted. In fact, they don't even have email or a fax machine. This is the most unprofessional corporation I think I've ever dealt with. I will say though that the people at the club are nice, the corporation is just ridiculous. DON'T JOIN. Go to the Y.

My wife works at a YMCA and we have a family membership. Shoot the family membership is cheaper at the Y then for 2 people at UA.

Problem 1: I went to UA to cancel my tanning membership this week. I had previously been in to cancel last summer and was told that I have to come in during "regular" gym hours, that no one could handle my cancelation in the early morning.

Months went by because I work and can't get in during those hours. I went in at 4 on Tuesday this week and was told I can't cancel in-person, I had to send a form to the Corporate office. When I told the employee that I read the contract and it allowed cancelation in-person, he told me that the contracts had changed and that UA can change their contract terms whenever they want.

I spoke to another person, same day. He told me that not only can't I cancel in person but I will need to cancel via certified/return receipt mail to the Corporate office. I would also be charged a $10 cancelation fee in addition to the 30 day notice (which, btw, is 30 days from the end of the month after you give notice - they get almost an addition 2 months, depending on when you cancel.)

I waited for 10 more minutes to speak to the Manager. He told me he could take my cancelation in person but he can not issue any kind of receipt that I had turned in the notice. He also said he could not guarantee the notice would get to UA's accounting office.

Problem 2: Last night, I received a call from Jessica at UA about my regular gym membership. She said it expired next month. I told her that I had just reviewed and I had 7 more months. She had a 3 year contract that I signed in 2008 which she emailed me.

While she was correct, I had also been contacted 1 year early apparently to renew my contract in 2010. I paid up front for a 18 month contract at that time. She does not have this on record.
I have emailed it to her and am waiting to see if UA will give me the extra year and a half that they seem to be cheating me out of in 2 swoops.

I also explained to Jessica that I had tried to cancel my tanning membership, a separate contract, in person. She told me that I am not allowed to cancel in person. When I told her it was in my contract, she said that UA "reserves the right to change the terms of contracts at any time". Wow, what law school have these people been to?

I can't wait to take them to small claims court.

For those of you who are happy with your experience at Urban Active, I hope you never want to quit. I too liked the facilities, but past that they were nothing special. I have been trying to quit for three months now and am not having any luck. Now I am really nervous hearing about all of their hidden fees. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and they have them listed as an F on their grading scale. All for the same reasons. Cancellation policy. Do not join this club unless you plan to stay with them until the day you die. Even then they will find a way to charge your family members.

I joined the Legacy Village gym in Cleveland Ohio and have been lied to and mislead about the contracts. I and am currently fighting several charges to my credit card. I even cancelled my credit card to stop the charges. My experience sounds very much like every one else's.

I'm fighting the charges through my credit card company and will report to the BBB. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to do.

Urban active as everyone said sucks and the worst step I ever took. And now I am suffering with money issue because of them. I recommend everyone here file a complaint to BBB.org, it seems when you search the company name there, the CEO or whatever you want to call him is taking direct calls to try to clear the name of the company at BBB website, but they deserve it, they need to refund people the money for lies and miscommunication and disrespect at most of their locations, especially with you bank account and automatic draws every month even after cancellation.

Please file your complaint or comments to BBB.org, people and government need to know not everyone have the money like urban active does and we cant go to court, so at least we can file a complaint somewhere.

It's a small comfort to know that my husband and I were not the only people taken advantage of by the Hyde Park Urban Active. I can't name a business in Cincinnati that is LESS CUSTOMER FOCUSED than this one. I also faced the months and months of trying to suspend the month-to-month charges after our contract expired. When filling out the final forms, I even caught the managers laughing at me from in the office. Several hundred $ later the charges stopped. I need a gym, but I would not do business with them again. They really didn't care about me, only about our money. There were numerous better offers available after we signed our contract but they forced us to stay at the contracted rate. Save yourself, find another gym.

If you ever think you might want to terminate your membership before you die, you should avoid joining Urban Active. Once your contract membership reaches its expiration date, it really converts to a month to month membership. In order to cancel, you must complete an Urban Active cancellation form and send it by certified mail to their Kentucky office. You are then at the mercy of their processing time before any official cancellation takes place. I jumped through these hoops only to learn that the initial application fee from two years ago was never processed so they had a small open amount on my account which allowed them to charge me for a monthly membership until the amount from two years was paid. That led to further delays in processing and another month on their billing cycle. I would avoid joining Urban Active due to their unethical business practices. If you join anyway, I recommend you start the cancellation process about six months before your anniversary date should you ever plan not to renew.

Even as fitness centers go, Urban Active is the WORST for billing practices! They're very deceptive about what you're going to get charged, and when you cancel, they not only charge you a $10 fee for the privelege of not doing business with them anymore, they charge you for the next month that you don't use their facilities!

Urban Active Fitness sucks. Even for a gym. And that's saying a lot - I belonged to Moore's back in the day :)

I was satisfied with the facilities, availability, and staff at Hilliard UA. (It was a former Gold's Gym.) Pre-paid contract expired Dec 2010, only to find out it didn't expire... it auto-converted to a month-to-month and they continue to bill me. Apparently I have to cancel my expired membership by mailing (yes... as in stamp and envelope) a cancellation form. Based on the other comments here, I'll consider my self lucky if I can get out of this with just the $10 cancellation fee.

Do NOT join this gym if you think for any reason you might move or have to cancel! They make it absolutely impossible to cancel and for everything you send in that you believe would be plenty proof for them to see that you moved away they send something back saying "we are unable to process it at this time"! I have never been so frustrated in my life with a company! GO ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HERE!!!!!!!!

If you want to ruin your work out/tanning mood, the Hyde Park Urban Active is the place to go. Dirty tanning beds, stinky classrooms, rude and argumentative staff and lack of towels will definitely motivate you to stay at home and watch some TV. Or maybe jog in the park.
Canceling your membership even after it expired is an adrenaline boost on its own, good luck to all those fighting the charges and fees!

It seems like everyone on these review sites has nothing but negative things to say. Maybe it's because the people who are content, and enjoy their experience do not have the need to vent to anyone who will read it. 90% of the reviews on here are horrible.. That's about 80 bad reviews. At the location I visit (Kenwood) there are about 700 people per day that work out and seem genuinely happy. The facility is beautiful, the equipment is well kept and the location is very clean. I pay $30 per month for the gym, and another $10 for the tanning. The sales person that signed me up was very nice. Yes there is a semi-annual $15 fee, and it was disclosed to me up front, in fact he actually had me initial a spot saying that he made me aware of it. as long as it is used to keep the gym as nice as it is now, I have no problem with it. Cancellation is a 30 day notice and a $10 cancellation fee. I don't agree with the $10 cancellation fee, but it's 10 bucks.. not a huge issue.
Majority of the reviews on here are horrible, but overall, the people who are unhappy are the minority. They probably joined because they are excited to work out and expect overnight results. When they realize that it's actually hard work getting into good shape and maintaining it - they look for any reason to be upset rather than saying "i just don't have the motivation to work out."
I use several clubs around the city and the staff members are very friendly for the most part. Almost all the issues have been caused by 12 or 24 month contracts.. The company realized this, and now offers everything month to month. If you're trying to talk yourself out of joining a health club, then you will be able to find reviews to help you do so. But if you actually want to join a gym that gives you a ton of options for your money, then c heck them out..

Plus side:
Huge gym, plenty of exercise equipment and classes

Negative side:
-Terrible contracts: two pages of fine print. Make sure you read it. If you want to cancel your membership before the term is up, you pay the larger of $250 or 15% of your contract. This is a lot, but as it is described in the contract, it is no problem. The problem is that if you want to cancel, you cannot cancel at the location, you need to do it by certified mail!
- It is practically impossible to talk to people at the corporation in Kentucky. They don;t have a phone listed on the website and the staff claims that their only communication channel is by mail!
- Terrible staff : arrogant and displaying no interest except in signing up people or being rude to those already signed up. When I complained that a piece of equipment was not repaired for a month, they told me that it is in that state because people like me don't report problems to the staff. I always thought that staff check up equipment not members!
- when they opened the club, it was possible to maintain records of personal training session by physically signing in. Now they require that people do it by fingerprint although this raises privacy issues. When I refused to have my fingerprint in their system, I was told that I cannot train anymore although my contract is on!
- Very few showers compared to number of members. Not clean.

I was a member of the Urban Active club in Omaha, Nebraska. The gym was fine..not dirty and equipment was in working order. The staff was really unfriendly and seemed really stuck up. My biggest problem with this gym is trying to cancel a membership. My husband and I moved to Denver unexpectedly so we had to cancel. First of all, I have NEVER been part of a gym where you have to send a cancellation by mail to some corporate office. This is a total scam. You should be able to walk in, show proof of the move, and cancel. I sent my forms 2 months ago and they are STILL charging me my membership fee every month. I try to call their number and can't reach anyone so I am always transferred to the Omaha club. They are totally clueless and claim they can't cancel my membership there because it has to be done at the corporate office. They then claim to "email" someone at corporate to get my membership cancelled quicker (haha). It still has not happened. I am so frustrated with this crappy company. DO NOT join this gym. It has been nothing but a giant pain in my a*s!!! Horrible experience all around.

I have been a member since they opened in Louisville. The club in St. Matthews and Taylorsville Rd are very nice. The club on Dixie Hwy is a mess. Equipment is broken, pins missing form machines, dirty, water fountain does not work, etc. I have informed the staff there several times and they will not clean or repair items. Very disappointed!!

Absolutely dreadful experience.

The gym is starting to show signs of wear and tear and no one does anything about it.

That isn't the worst of it.

Yes, I signed a contract, but anyone who says they read every line of every contract they sign is full of it.

If for some crazy reason you decide to sign a contract, beware of the "auto renewal". You'll get screwed royally if you don't.

There is no way to contact anyone at corporate, but you better believe they'll call you if you owe them money.

I paid, over the course of the year, $150 or so a month for personal training. I finished it and they continued to bill me. It was then that I discovered the "auto renewal" business.

So, as others have already pointed out, I have to fill out * their * form and mail it certified with return receipt ($5.20 postage) and include a check for $10 for"cancellation fees".

Don't even bother talking to the local club. They might as well be in on it. They are no help.

I have just sent in my request to cancel both the personal training and the regular gym membership.

Be careful simply canceling your credit card. They simply tack on more penalties. I am glad I caught this in the first month. Dispute the charge.

I hope I can put this behind me soon. It's dreadful.

They are a horrible, nasty company.

This is the worst gym that I have ever worked out at. If I had read the reviews online and seen the F rating from the BBB, I would have never signed up. I??m not going to go into a long discussion on the improvement fee, because my experience is like everyone else??s. No mention of this fee by the sales staff and the mystery charge on my credit card. I would recommend never having a credit card on file with this company, because it will be charged, without authorization. That is my problem with the billing practices. Now, on to the facility. The staff there is horrendous. The trainers are the biggest perpetrators of not returning/re-racking weights. I told the gym manager about this while speaking to her about where my "improvement fee" was going, and she said that "this is a problem with the members?. She insisted that they have a maintenance staff that cleans up the gym but other than the guy that dusts the treadmill WHILE I am running on it, I have never seen any staff member pick up anything that has been left on the floor, and this is not an exaggeration, I mean NEVER. I told her that I had seen trainers (pretty much everyday I work out, and I??m there 4-5 days a week) not returning equipment. More than one day I have come to work out and found 2 full rows of dumbbells missing. I looked for them for more than 10 minutes and could not find a single weight I needed. It is any everyday struggle to find the equipment that I need to do my workout and many times use just whatever I can find. It is difficult to find a bench to use. The equipment is not organized well. I don??t think the person who set up the gym has ever worked out a day in their life. Oh, and a note on that improvement fee, the gym has not purchased one new piece of equipment since I have been there, and have eliminated several. I have seen the staff eating Taco Bell and McDonald??s in their glass walled offices (not really promoting a healthy lifestyle for the members). I was initially impressed with all the cardio equipment, however a lot of the cool upgrades do not work on one machine or another (tv??s, ipod & earphone jacks, volume button, incline, stop button (that one is kind of important) are some of the few that I have experienced not working). A lot of the equipment will have the ??under repair? sign hanging on it for a month or longer. The gym is completely inaccessible between 4-8. I pretty much refuse to go at any time other than 11am or after 9pm because it is a mad house. The music is obnoxious and very loud. The ??cardio cinema? another novelty is also obnoxiously loud. I guess it needs to be to be able to hear the movie over all of the squeaky cardio equipment.
A lot of the members use the equipment for leaning while chatting, so at times the gym looks more like social hour. I think the member attitudes stems a lot from the attitude of the staff. No one else is going to bother to clean up after themselves when the people who work there don??t. I must be one of the only people who actually spoke to someone at their corporate office over my annoyance with their ??improvement fee?. This man was one of the most unprofessional people I have ever spoken with. All he knew how to say in response to any question I had about their deceptive practices was ??it??s in the contract? (common theme at this company, that is their answer to every dispute). I told him that I would not be renewing my membership if they were not wiling to waive the fee, and they would be losing thousands of dollars in membership fees from my family. His response, ??Oh, well?. Well, needless to say I will not renew with this gym, and I hope no one else joins, it is a horrible company. BELIEVE ALL THE REVIEWS ?? STAY AWAY!

To anyone trying to join the Urban Active at the Greene in Dayton, Ohio, beware its not what it used to be. I left LA Fitness because it was twice as expensive as Urban Active and three times further from my home. I remember when it was Gold's I visited and it was awesome! I quit Urban Active after one week! I will gladly drive the distance and pay the higher fees for LA. Urban Active at the greene has so many issues there is no way there is anyone that has a good review of it without it being the only gym they have ever tried. I am a trainer at a local high school and have been to many different gyms in different states like fitworks, LA, Neo Limits, etc. all have there issues but none as severe as THIS Urban Active. First, because of their newly appointed no contract and low fees to win business from fitworks, going between 4:30 and 6:30pm is a waste of time! Seems like they offer these rates but drop any gym maintenance(yet charge you a separate fee for that) or maybe it is just so crowded they can't keep it clean. Everything is taken, and if you leave to get a drink from one of their two water fountain stations (which is lukewarm and iron tasting) you can almost guarantee your equipment will be taken. Whats worse is the personal trainers stand there toe tapping until you get off! I found this extremely rude, I understand they have clients and a job to do but I pay my dues and expect to be able to finish a workout without the Hulk's shadow cast upon me! There equipment was once nice but is now dated and unkept. I was there for a week and saw one of the bench pads fall out from under a guy and watched one of the safety clamps slide right off on a guy doing squats, lost the weight and could've lost a toe! EXTREMELY disorganized layout compared to LA. Everything is mostly scattered about, AB machines half upstairs half downstairs, everything cluttered together. It may take 10 minutes to find a locker during busy times unless you have one with your name plaqued on it, there are 20 people standing around trying to play basketball, if you ever want to just shoot around or play a game of 21 with friends you'll have to come earlier or later in the day. I came in early one morning for an assessment and no one was there, they called specifically to set an appointment and didnt show, and no one cared! This cluttered, overcrowded gym has the same type of people as any other gym, yet they are all forced into this dickhead role because of the fight to get the workout done. There is much more but I just don't care enough to get fired up anymore cause im no longer a part of it. Overall if you are looking for a cheap, no contract gym than do it but know there is a reason for this.

I joined the Urban Active in Powell Oh. I purchased training sessions and worked with a phenomenol trainer. However, unprofessional comments made by another trainer caused me to decide to quit. Upon cancelling my training I was told that they would continue to charge the last 3 payments on my credit card on file. Then about a month after that, they pulled my account up and told my co worker, who also worked out there, that my account was "red" and I had cancelled my credit card. This was not true. I found out that what they should have told me was that I needed to call and authorize the payment to be charged. BTW, at no time did they call me to advise or ask why my card was not being billed. They would rather talk about you behind your back to others which I find unacceptable and unprofessional. Since they want to talk about me behind my back, they are close enough to kiss my behind. I would never join Urban Active. Join a gym that has a professional staff, keeps equipment clean and in working order, and doesn't talk about you behind your back.

The worst club I have ever joined. DONT SIGN their contracts. Their contract make you send a certified, return reciept requested envelope to cancel and you must use their form; which further obligatess you. You must also pay $20 to cancel your membership. Yep, nobody tells you that. Also, you cannot cancel at your local club. You must send this form to corporate. Get this... you cant call them! The number does not allow you to talk to corporate personnel. You are routed back to the club and they tell you to write corporate! Dont Do it !!!!!!!!!

I think Urban is a nice gym. I never had to wait to on an elipitcal and the tv's in the machines are great. The locker rooms (althought lockers are small) are always clean.

The track is small though and the personal trainers like to use the running lane for their clients to do things such as lunges.

AVOID personal training and tanning. In the winter time the tanning wait can be over an hour and what really is lousy is you sign in on a wait list and they don't take appointments so if they tell you it's a 45 minute wait and you go and work out on the elipitcal for 35 minutes and go back down, if others didn't wait for their appointment and your name was called you go at the bottom of the list again.

I would also avoid personal training due to their cancel policy. It's sad because my trainer was GREAT, but I wanted to cancel my contracdt when it was up and go with more sessions. Even though the gym is more than willing to sign you up right away for sessions or a new package, you have to send in a from via certified mail to Louisville. Their cancel policies are absurd, you can't cancel more than 30 days out and you ahve to cancel on the first of the month and there is a $10 fee even if you have fulfilled your contract. With all the problems I went through to cancel, I refused to sign up for more sessions. I told the trainer if cancelling was as easy as signing up, I had not problems seeing him three days a week, but after the hassle of cancelling this contract, I didn't want to deal with it again.

It's the same way when you cancel your membershpi if your contracdt is up. Have to do it by certified mail, has to be received by the first of the month and you can't cancel more than 30 days before your cancel date.

It's a shame their corporate office is so shady with the contracts, because this has the potential of being a great health club.

I wish I read these reviews before signing a personal training contract. My complaint does not include my personal trainer. She was great. However, when I moved out of the area, they said it was no problem to cancel since there were no Urban Active Gyms at my new location. I gave them proof of my move, but TWO MONTHS LATER found out that 'proof of move' was not considered valid. They're saying I owe $460 now, and it was reported to a finance company. I again submitted proof of my move (lease agreement, proof of change of address form from USPS, and proof of paid tuition from my University), and sent it certified mail so that I could be assured that it was received. It was delivered, but no one has contacted me concerning my account, and every attempt on my behalf to settle this has failed. My phone calls and emails are not returned. I've failed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Protection Agency. Their business practices are unprofessional and unethical. I plan to dispute and claim that will negatively affect my credit and request an arbitration if necessary. Stay away from these money hungry thieves.
