Worst Buy

by Mary W.

I bought a laptop computer from Best Buy in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio in February '07, two weeks after the puchase it crashed, my husband took it and all the paperwork back to the store for an exchange, the clerk told my husband all he needed was a recovery disk for approx. 50 bucks. My husband contacted the manufacturer and they sent him one. Once again the computer crashed and my husband took it back in and the GEEK SQUAD told him theyt would send it out to be fixed. My husband got the computer back and it crashed yet again. By this time it was the middle of summer. My husband, once again made a trip to Best Buy and once again they sent it out. Approximately a month or so later my husband got the computer back and once again it did the same thing. My husband made yet another trip to Best Buy and went through the same process again. By the time my husband got the computer back it was late December and ONCE AGAIN it crashed. My husband made another trip to the store and complained about all the previous trips and how the problem has yet to be resolved, it pretty much fell on deaf ears, and so once again the computer was sent out. My husband picked up his computer February 9th, 2008 and inside of 3 minutes of it being home he turned it on and had the exact same thing happened that had happened all the other times. I went with my husband to the store, and talked to their GEEK SQUAD and asked for a hard copy of their return policy, instead they gave me a copy of their extended warranty which includes an application. I don't believe they will ever have the computer fixed and in my opinion they are deceptive in their practices. I am telling everyone I know, Stay away from BEST BUY.

Geek Squad - poor customer service

by Anonymous

Several years ago I bought a laptop from Best Buy for my husband who was deploying to IRAQ. I also purchased several hundred dollars worth of extras-including and a 3 year warranty. Upon his return home we took the laptop to a Best Buy in NC who told us to call Hewlitt Packard because they have a military support department. We did that and were told to take it back to the store we bought it on, have them remove the hard drive, because of sensitive data that was stored on it and Best Buy could still be able to find out what went wrong with the laptop. I took the laptop up and was treated horribly. The "Geek Squad" rep told me I had to purchase another harddrive for 250$ - I asked for his manager and was told she was in a meeting. Upset and furious I demanded he find her, so she came up obviously bothered that I had an issue with requesting to speak to her ( I thought I was the customer?) I had informed her of what Hewlitt Packard support told me, providing her my ticket # and who I spoke with- since I took detailed notes. She basically gave me a "too bad" response, refused to give me her bosses name and/or number and basically said to call their 800# and complain. I never did and instead chose to just boycott the store and share my story with anyone and everyone who will listen. I take my hard earned dollars to other locations that know how to treat their customers. I went home and told my husband what happened, he took the laptop up and talked to someone explaining the hard drive has to be removed and taken with him and this person agreed with no problem. I still boycott Best Buy and tell everyone about my experience.

Steer Clear Of This Store!

by Jerod H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,758

I bought a computer at Worst Buy... My old system had been the victim of Mother Nature's fury, and I wanted to buy something semi-powerful, yet inexpensive. I had been searching high and low and then I was sitting at my folks' place one Sunday, reading the Best Buy ad, when what pops up but an emachine's system model T3095 for less than $400. It's a Sempron 3000, had 512mb of DDR3200, a 16X dual layer DVD-RW, an 8x AGP slot, yadda yadda... Basically, more than snappy enough for me, who though I am thought of as a geek, don't do many overly geeky things with my PC. My idea of gaming is a relaxing game of solitaire or tetris. So anyway... I got busy.... I started a new job... the system sat in a sealed box until a few weeks ago. I set it up, got XP Pro onto it, etc. And then I tried to burn. And tried again.... And again.... 6 times... 3 different brands/speeds of CD-R media, 3 different brands/speeds of burnable DVD media... 6 coasters.

Call the MFG, no help.

I figure I'll call Best Buy and see if they can help... big company, should have good customer service, right? Yeah... I first talked to an "Agent" at "Geek Squad" who basically told me that since I hadn't bought a $149 "Platinum Level ESP" (PLESP) with the system, they could take it from me and ship it to the MFG for the repair... But if I had bought the PLESP, it could have been fixed in 2 days.

So I asked to speak to his manager... I got a "Senior Agent On Duty" this time. He gave me the same basic speech, but slipped in another little gem... If it had a PLESP, they could have pulled a burner of the shelf and installed it, but since I didn't, it had to be shipped to their repair center and they would get the part. And then in the next sentence he told me they don't keep drives for the emachines because you have to use a proprietary drive.

Everyone up to the store manager gave me the same story.

PROS: Cheap, close
CONS: If you buy something at Best Buy... Buy the PLESP... or else.

Best Buy - not good

by amysds

I have had the worst experiences with Best Buys in general - not specifically Cuy Falls. Though I should note that this time is the most frustrating for me.

I bought a laptop in 2006 and had problems with it almost immediatly, luckily I bought the warranty. My problem is the length of time they take to fix problems, and returning my laptop with further damage or the original problem not addressed. (Mayfield Best Buy)
That computer after having to send it out to Geek HQ to be fixed FOUR times was junked out. They replaced it with a computer that was $200 cheaper than my original. (Mentor Best Buy) I went to Mentor because of the poor service in Mayfield and they are the ones I got my replacement from - the guy told me it was a much better computer and it had everything my first one did.
It didn't - I found out too late that the replacement only had 90 trial version software on it and the Corporate office said it wasn't their responsibility to match software with my original computer. No matter that I was told it was on there!
I'm having problems with my new laptop and went to the Cuy Falls Best Buy since I've moved. It had wireless card and DVD problems. It was gone over 2 weeks, they sent it back after replacing the hard drive. I turned it on in the store (I've learned) and the wireless card and DVD player STILL didn't work. They sent it out and escalated it (for all that does) and my laptop has been in Best Buys hands for 37 days, today. A ridiculous amount of time! The online customer support person is nice but my laptop is still out.
I have to recommend to everyone I know to never make a major purchase at Best Buy.
P.S. I wanted to put NO STARS but it wouldn't let me.

Cons: Poor Parking, poor service due to lack of resources at BB and not enough people to handle demand, Geek Squad often ignores calls or disconnects them when busy (witnessed and experienced)
