This negative comments about "The Web" are only directed at Athmo the last owner of the Web. Sadly, I don't even want to connect the Athmo w/the name "The Web" since he doesn't derserve it. What a shame what happened to The Web. It had GREAT energy until Athmo came around. I know because I worked there when it started. I also stay in touch w/Medeana and Albert. They are GREAT people and they never knew what Athmo planned to do to their store. Such a shame. Even after I went to teach in Cleveland I still shopped consistently at The Web. When it was under Medeana & Albert it was CLEAN and run w/ a positive spirit. Because of the economy the Hobar's needed to sell their store. It wasn't failing before Athmo came around. I came in a few times and even witnessed a worker who had just been "fired" who had been there for years with the Hobar's. She was in tears as she left since it was no longer what The Web was intended to be. The shelves were practically empty. The workers had dour unapproachable looks on their faces. They didn't even know how to run the cash register. (I had to SHOW them! And I hadn't even worked there for years!) Completely unknowledgeable about anything. I asked about a very common product and I had to pull out their ordering catalogue to show them what I was talking about! The atmosphere was dark, stark, and sterile in appearance (not clean though). Why did they put all that clinical stainless steel in there...and it wasn't even clean? Quite unfriendly across the board! Talk about negative attitudes! It truly broke my heart! Now I have to drive all the way over to Whole Foods to get what I need. Granted I did hear from the managers at Whole Foods that they are coming to Rocky River on Center Ridge where the old Target was located. Even so...I like how I was helped at The Web of Life better. I've had several repetitive ordering problems with Whole Foods. Still...we need something on this side of town to fill the hole left by The Web. Miss you guys! Medeana, Albert, Renee', Rose, Big Al, Lance, etc...

Medeana so glad to hear how great you are doing with E3 Live! I LOVE E3 Live! You can find it everywhere at REPUTABLE places like Liquid Planet, Treehuggers, Nature's Bin, etc... Had to give you a positive shout out Medeana! So miss you at The Web!!! (((HUGS))))

The Web is dark now, a sad and very unfortunate "death." Maybe it's only in a coma. I hope so. Living only a couple miles away, my family and I had been regulars at the Web under Al and Medina, knew the chefs, the staff, and the other regulars on the stools at the deli. Great place! Always full of customers. It's gut-churning what slowly evolved under the new ownership. I worried it would falter and die, and I was right. A sort of foreshadowing of things to come took place when I ventured in shortly after the new ownership. I saw not only drastic changes in the inventory, conditions to the interior and new faces with an attitude, but I also noticed that half the place was in the dark! Conserving on electricity perhaps? An Indian woman behind the institutional deli offered me a sample of Indian soup. I love Indian cuisine, so I accepted. The sample was ice cold and influenced the taste of the soup. Seeing my shock, she brusquely commented that if I wanted it warm, she'd charge me for it. I left with a heavy heart. Trying again, I returned a few months later to buy some tea. That same woman was trying to convince me that tea was "very bad" for me. She was the only one in the darkened store, standing in the aisle like some spooky character out of a Dickens novel. I left in a hurry after she began lecturing me on what tea does to the body.
I don't know who she was (married to the owner perhaps?) but everyone involved in the new ownership needed a crash course on customer service. They may be smarter than Einstein on Wall Street, but if you alienate the customers, let's face it, you're not going to be in business for long. RIP WOL. Let's hope you one day rise from the ashes.

An inside eye for all the craziness I have read on this page....With the promise of a new gas station to replace the small Clark Station, near Euclid Ohio that Athmo owned for a couple years, Athmo found a family restaurant to buy to profit and use for his station, called The Web of Life. At the station he was known as Art, by the customers. he thought it was better for people like "them" to call him, rather than Athmo or Guru ( I didn't spell it right, but that's his "other" name as well). The station was shut down in 2007. As soon as The Web of Life was officially turned over into his name, slowly, day by day, each member of the family, that previously owned the place, was fired for some unexplained reason. I believed this was planned because when the wale mural was in the works, and the fish tank thing was being built, the artist drew Madena, Albert, and Athmos faces in the background of the tank. Athmo saw this and was very upset, like he wanted no trace of them or the family to be there once the company was in his name. And to also validate this, The artist that did the tank is a different artist tht did the mural on the wall. Who knows if its there now, its been years, but I doubt no one ever painted it over. Madena is a fish and you can see Athmo standing, stretching his arms... From personal experiences and falling into scams by this man, and listening to his fast money ideas, I assure you it will happen to you. Anyone who is dear friends with this man, his friendship can be great, but with what motive? Anyone who is a good speaker can influence people easily (Hitler). It has been years, and a day does not go by when I don't think of that wonderful family and what happened.
But, if Athmo is doing what he loves and is treating/helping people, honestly, I wish him all the best, as long as it's honest. Like I said, this all happened in 2007. My intentions are not to upset anyone. I'm just handing over some truth to the different opinions on this page. Judge by your next experience at the Web of Life. If you enjoy it, well, that's all that matters I guess. Craziness behind the counter should not ruin the taste of your meal.

When the Web used to be owned by the former owners, we would drive 23 miles to go there at least a few times a month. The bottom line was the vegan deli was just darn tasty. That's why I go to restaurants. They had a very appealing deli case stocked with food and a large bakery case. The sandwiches and other entrees were great.

But we'd also load up on some of the market products, like the various vegan "chick" patties, stuff from the bulk bins, soy ice cream, Tofurkey sausages, dried fruit, etc.

After the new owner came, there were changes. A large meat case was added (I thought that would offend a lot of the vegan/vegetarian customers), ultimately the shelves reduced stock to about 25% of the original stock, the bakery case and deli case largely disappeared (w/ bakery items being housed in plastic containers in a cooler and overpriced by about 50%), one classy chef was gone, the nice eat-at counter with barstools turned into an industrial-looking metal barricade (is about a waist-high block of stainless steel that runs the length of the deli).

Any discussion of the new place as a health-oriented site has to take into account the idea that this is not a clinic--it's supposed to be a restaurant. A healthful restaurant yes, but a restaurant first. Tasty, well-stocked, attentive, clean, and fun. It was still fairly tasty, but not well-stocked, not attentive enough, unsure about how clean it was (I didn't pay attention), and the sense of atmosphere of fun was just not there, at least for me.

In fairness, and on the up side, they added new tables and chairs, a huge and very nice undersea mural, an aquarium, and maybe a few other touches. The menu was expanded, but I didn't sample the new food. Much of the old items were still on the menu, and I went under the new ownership and enjoyed one of the sandwiches, though I remember thinking it was not quite as good as the previous times.

The service under the new ownership was poor when I was there, but it was sometimes spotty under the previous ownership as well, particularly at the end of that term, and to some degree that is a hard thing to get consistenty right with waitstaff. But one has to be a hardliner about that sort of thing if at all possible.

Overall, I found it sad to see the Web fall into what appeared to be misappropriation of resources and a misguided vision. What would have helped the web would have been simple things like advertising effectively, hosting open mics there, making the dining area more homey-looking, getting better music consistently (it varied between Journey songs from 1983 on the radio to awful repetitive groove music), adjusting the AC so it wasn't so chilly there all the time, firing the awful waiters instantly and recruiting more solid people to work there, maybe scaling back the bakery (that had to be a drain) but not as much as it is now...maybe keeping a special dessert of the day or two or three and that's it. It had incredible potential, but it was also a tough business in that area I guess.

Good luck to Bee Well. Perhaps it can (or has?) come into its own with a new vision, but the choices so far (like that steel barricade) have been, in my opinion, unfortunate.

was not so good...

i used to come to the web of life for specific deli items: save the fish, tempeh reuben, and buffalo tofu. my husband and i had a tempeh reuben and a save the fish in the spring of this year and it was terrible. dry, nothing like before. for a vegan who enjoyed not having to drive across town for certain things, the grocery shelves left a LOT to be desired.

i haven't been back in since, nor do i plan on it. very disappointing...

I am a person who likes to eat out. First time when we went to eat here, my first impression about the place was not too great. I did not like the place too much as it was not the best place you would want to be, not too crowded. But when we ordered and ate the food, all our opinion took a U-turn. The food is so different than what we usually would eat but yet so tasty. Since then I have become a big fan of this place. Whenever I visit this place, I not only eat my food, I also get it packed for next couple of meals. Some of my all time favorites are- Portabella Pita, Indian Dahl, Oatmeal Burger, Vegan garlic pizza, All smoothies, greenjuice... the list is really long. One recommendation for the staff there- please try to keep this place a little clean.

I have never seen a healthfood store run by such a knowledgeable person. He knows so much about health and food. He has the magic to cure all your diseases with just slight change in food and eating habits. I have been suffering of acidity for past so many years and just a shot of wheatgrass daily, green juice and change in the food that I eat every day. Since then I have recommended this place to many of my friends and everyone has been benefited by this. The best thing I like about this store is that they give you knowledge about food and not food supplements, they improve your health by green juice and smoothies and not by drugs. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone who is health conscious and is looking for solutions.

For all those who love to critcse and miss the point, this is for them. Let me tell you what going on with the The web of life, Athmo & ??bee well? the new name. The Web of Life was the name under which its previous owner Madena & Albert ran the business. For reasons know to them they sold the so called ??great running business? to Athmo in May 07. Since then Athmo who has two masters degrees & immense knowledge on food & diet has been running the show. I know athmo personally and I have know the previous owner as well as I am very old customer of the store. I would like to ask just one simple question to any one & all of you, how many of you know of a health food store owner who is into health research of any sort & associated with leading institution as big as Cleveland clinic foundation for changing the health in real term. I just know one Athmo. Athmo has just completed a research in reversing cardiovascular disease & has incredible results. The person who is helping people in chronic disease with just healthy food guidance and Wheatgrass and chill pill how can you even think of condemning and criticizing him. I request the so called jealous crusaders who are just driven by there jealously to please stop there failing effort to bring this business down. As I don??t see success for you.

Yes, The Web Of Life is dead, as the NAME should be. It's old, negative energy, a lot like some of the "bad" reviews seen below by disgruntled ex-employees (owners?) or friends of such (yes, "anonymous," I speaking to you). Anyone who has been in the store recently can see fully-stocked shelves, friendly and knowledgeable staff and lots and lots of the best product for your health - WHEATGRASS! It's so obvious the negative press is pro-"E3-Alive" since that's the ex-owner's only viable source of income. Wheatgrass is not only better than E3 it is LOCAL and organic! We've been seriously polluting our seas and you can't even eat any fish without ingesting a harmful amount of mercury. But don't listen to me or Athmo - Dr. Esslestein from the Cleveland Clinic has written a book touting a completely plant-based diet as the ONLY way to avoid the multitude of diseases out there. Also see the pHMiracle for more proof!

Bee Well's deli is awesome and things could not be better there and anyone looking to rid themselves of any disease, digestive problems, skin conditions or even mental disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) should see and talk with Athmo for ways to naturally correct them.

The owner is great and I like the wheatgrass he sells. I'm going back for the raw food dinner on Wednesday and it sounds great.
I just got a book on raw foods and it sounds like a good way to eat. I don't know another place that serves the raw food around here.

..".we are land animals...much better eating off the land"---give me a break, why don't you tell that to the hundreds of cultures that have sustained themselves for thousands of years from the sea (and land). People from the island of Okinawa tend to live longer than any other culture, they must not receive any health benefits from the sea I guess. All I am saying is that if you are about to make the argument of E3 vs. Wheatgrass-please don't bring evolutionary biology into it. We all came from the sea any way. And also, if you got no business skills (like Mr. Athmo, Guru with the nice car) don't buy a business and try and run it

Many people who knew the Web before Athmo did not give him a chance to last this long. The fact that he has, without the "fully stocked" shelves of the previous owners is a credit to what Athmo is doing. If one would take the time to sit down with Athmo and talk with him they would understand his philosophy. For one, Athmo's goal in life and with this store is to truly help you, the customer, regain and maintain your health. Most of the product that was in that store contributed nothing to your good health (just like Nature's Bin, Whole Foods, etc.). Very little of those stores' foods are truly organic and much are still the same processed crap you can buy at Giant Eagle! And as far as wheatgrass, this single food will save your life - but don't take my word for it - research it yourself. And E3 Alive is an algae which is not as good for everyone as wheatgrass is. And it just makes more logical sense - humans are land animals. Sure we can eat from the sea, but are much better off eating off the land. And if you are really serious about your health, you will minimize or eliminate totally any meat and dairy from your diet. Check out sites like phmiracle.com. Many health experts will tell you that algae is not assimilated as well by the body and may even do more damage than good.

And as far as freezing wheatgrass? Freezing any vegetable immediately after harvest or juicing absolutely preserves all of the plant's properties! Many studies have proven this! Frozen vegetables in the grocery often are much more nutritious than the "fresh" vegetables offered as those "fresh" veggies have been cut days ago and begin their nutritional decline immediately whereas any producer will freeze those same veggies immediately after harvest and wash. Athmo is not the only "freezer" of wheatgrass. The other health food stores mentioned above all sell frozen wheatgrass and the benefits are the same - any other thoughts about that fact are based on misinformation.

And for an incredibly delicious dinner at an extremely reasonable price, check out The Web of Life's Wednesday night raw food dinner! (If you can get a seat - it's extremely popular!)

Oh, yeah, the store could definitely be cleaner, Athmo.

Greetings,
I found this site when I was doing a google search to find out how the Web has been doing. I grew up in Westlake and used to eat/shop there daily before leaving Ohio. The then owners Albert & Medina were great and so was the staff, I remember specifically Lance a chef.

The last couple years on holiday I would look forward to eating there and getting a few things such as E3Live that I could take with me back to Texas. This last December around Christmas I was in town and dis-spite my mother telling me it had new ownership I was optimistic to return.

When I walked in immediately was confused. Dirty floors, dirty cereal and granola bins, empty shelves, and absolutely no produce. I was shocked. So I headed to the deli hoping to get a delicious sandwich praying that they had the same menu. I was greeted by all new faces at the deli and when I asked for a shot of E3 (stuff is great) I was told by the girl that they no longer carried it and that Athmo doesn't believe in it and would I like a shot of wheat grass. I asked her what was wrong with E3 and she said that if I wanted to I could speak with Athmo and he would be happy to explain. Meanwhile my girlfriend who was catching what turned out to be the flu was talking to this "Athmo" about what remedies whe could use. He was trying to push a 12-pack of pre-packed frozen shots of wheatgrass on her. I don't believe wheatgrass should be frozen and rather taken fresh so I put down the stuff he gave her and left immediately. I was very sad at the conditions and what the place looked like so I do hope for the best but I doubt anything can save this place. My family and I won't be returning and have jokingly now referred to it as the "Web of Death".

If anyone can tell me anything good or any improvements I would be glad to hear about it, but if it is still open without a complete 180 I don't see this place in business much longer. :(

This is the most reputable natural food market out there. Educate yourselves and realize you qwill find none better than these good people who operate this store. The products are Authentic and that is rare from any "natural" market unfortunately we as customers often trust a label rather than truly do the homework when buying products. These are people who really care and are organic to the core. They believe, they heal, they put love and knowledge, learning and sharing before what most set out to accomplish when entering the natural niche market ..the almighty dollar. THESE GUYS ARE THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE WITH INTEGRITY AND AUTHENTIC HEARTS! MEET THEM YOU WILL LOVE THEM. BUY THEIR GOODS YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF FOR GOING ANYWHERE ELSE!

This store was always one of the highest priced health food stores in the nation (actually, it was THE HIGHEST PRICED STORE that I have ever seen, and I have shopped in all the major markets. I never found a story in L.A., New York, Chicago, Scottsdale.. ANYWHERE that was as high as Web of Life!), and they still had trouble making it go. The stock was consistently low and often it was a disappointment to make the drive from Elyria.

On top of high prices and consistently low stock, the service can be HORRIBLE at times. You can sit at a table and wait and wait and wait for service. When, after 20 minutes of sitting, you finally go back up and ask about your order, they often say "Opps, I am sorry, I guess I forget to put it in." And this is kind of service was the NORM. However, recently the owners sold the store because they could not make a go of it, and now I the new ownership is pricing things much lower and working on the service. It is much better, but still needs work. But I have been told from several very good sources that he is worried about Web of Life going under for good, and SOON!

BTW, I was told by the previous owners that I was their #1 customer for several years at one point, so I know the store and it's employees well.

So, why am I giving it 3 stars? Well because Web of Life is the only store of it's kind on the West side of Cleveland. As a vegan and a seriously conscious eater, I know that Trader Joe's is not even close to a real health food store. So if it does go under, I now face driving an HOUR, through downtown traffic out to Cleveland Hts or Solon as there is NOTHING on the West Side. So, I pray it does not close. Bob W.

But now, the Web of Life just sucks. The new owner "Athmo" has completely desecrated what was once the best health food store in Ohio.

Since he took over, the food in the deli is horrible, the service is horrible, the grocery shelves are completely empty, the grab and go food is ALWAYS extremely old, most of the food on the shelves are outdated and the place is absolutely filthy. Don't let the signs and the menu fool you, they are no longer using ANY organic food in the deli. He is using the cheapest, bottom of the barrel ingredients available in food service.

How this idiot thought he could run a health food store is beyond me. The only thing he has successfully done is run it into the ground.
