My first time at Perks I looked at their menu and saw no Carmel Macchiato so I asked if they could custom make a drink. The girl behind the counter said I guess...I know great answer but I don't blame her, she wasn't trained well...I explained; steam the milk with s little froth, squirt in 3 pumps of vanilla syrup, stir, now extra tract 2 shots of espresso and pour on top, do not stir, them drizzle caramel sauce on top. Believe me, this is not confusing, even a poorly trained barista would understand all this and could do this in less than 60 seconds. At the moment she was going to start a gruff, older woman came in the back door and the girl said hold on a sec, I'll get my manager to do this. The manager...who turned out to be the owner said, "What's this?" as if I were harassing her employee. I reexplained the drink and SHE WENT OFF ON ME telling me it's people like me who kill small business...WHAT? She said, "You're one of those Starbucks people and this is one of thoseStarbucks drinks...she went on and on...."

She finally gave me my drink, no caramel sauce, she stirred the drink, and in addition to the3 pumps of vanilla syrup she added3 pumps of caramel syrup. This was crazy sweet and basically undrinkable.

I visited Van Wert a few months later and the owner was not there that day and the service was fine, the drinks a average. The owner was there when I visited last month...I thought maybe she was just having a bad day during my first visit....nope, she has the same old gruff, "I'm right not the customer attitude." Van Wert...please get a new coffee shop. Someone, open a coffee shop and be nice and you will run this hole in the wall out of business.

Perks is a locally owned specialty coffee shop similar to Starbucks or Tim Hortons. Unfortunately they are they ONLY coffee shop in all of Van Wert, otherwise I believe they would have to close their doors due to lack of business. The reason being, the owner, Laura Hershman, (who's always working) has a serious attitude problem. She is rude, sarcastic, and very inappropriate in the way she treats with customers. I'll give 2 case-in-points.
1. My friend, a local youth pastor, brought some of his teenagers to the coffee shop. They bought drinks and played games. One of them accidentally broke a wooden chair. She then yells at him from across the coffee shop and tells him he's going to have to pay for it. And adds that he's not welcome there anymore. Again, yelling. My friend, the youth pastor tried to apologize but she would not hear it.
2. My mother, a 55-yr-old woman went in with her friend and walked up to the counter to order a chai tea. The employee on the register was a teenage boy, with the manager working on other orders behind him. My mother did not know that, according to their menu, a chai tea was actually a chai tea latte made with steamed milk and concentrated chai tea. My mom was expecting a tea bag with hot water which only costed $1.80. When the teenager handed her the chai latte my mom looked puzzled and very innocently said that she had ordered a chai tea (thinking it should be a tea bag with hot water). Laura, the manager, explained very rudely that a chai was made with milk without offering a solution. My mom is lactose intolerant. Apologetically she said that she can't have milk. Trying to settle the matter quickly, my mom offered to pay for the tea bag and hot water in addition to paying for the latte. Laura then THROWS the money back at my mother and rudely gives the tea bag and hot water. Again, the owner THREW MONEY AT A 55-YR-OLD WOMAN AND BASICALLY THREW THE DRINK AT HER TOO. So my mom paid for a chai latte (to avoid anymore of Laura's attitude), which costed over $2, but only got the tea bag which should have only costed $1.80. Laura offered no apology, free drink, or refund of any kind.
If you can avoid Perks, do it. Go to McDonald's or Bob Evans. If you absolutely need a latte there is a Starbucks in Lima or Fort Wayne. The customer service at Perks makes this place simply not worth it!

I really enjoyed my coffee at Perk's Cafe. I'm definitely a fan of cafe's and I'd have to say that the coffee here was extra delicious. I really loved the service and can't wait to go back!
