When we first drove into River Retreat, it was spring. I let the season and the weather cloud my judgement. You can judge the whole campground by the entrance. The sign is old and faded. Letters are falling off or missing. You pull in

The location is great, the upkeep is terrible. If you can get past all the potholes, you will find your site amongst the trash that lines the campground in ways of a suburban on blocks, demo car, old tractors, lawn mowers, and a barn that

A group of friends & myself had planned a camping trip for the weekend of July 9th. I greatly enjoy planning/researching all of our adventures, & was disappointed when I had a hard time finding reviews about campgrounds in the area. Hesitantly, I decided on the River Retreat Campground. What a mistake!

We are a group of young adults who have been camping for years. We know how to rough it & try to make the best of a bad situation. That being said...

We arrived kind of surprised at how close the grounds were to the highway. Pulling in, we were greeted with the smell of stagnant water & swarms of bugs. Telling myself to stay positive, we went into "the office" to check in with Janet. Prior to our arrival, I had been in contact with River Retreat & clearly requested private sites, back in the woods & was assured that wouldn't be a problem. Janet had us pay $100 up front before she took us to our sites. Our "private sites" ending up being about 10 sq feet each in the middle of port-o-potties, broken down cars piled on top of each other, & a scattering of lumber that might have @ some point dreamt of being built into something.

We were horrified & immediately pulled out our gps & began searching for any other place to stay. It took us about 10 min, but luckily we were able to reserve with Sleepy Hollow, which proved to be our savior from River Retreat.

Now for the best part. My soft spoken husband & one of our friends (both who are business owners) walked up to the office to tell Janet politely this "wasn't what we were looking for," and that we needed a refund. (side note-while waiting one of us had to use "the bathrooms", let's just say no shower doors & squatting over a hole...) I was waiting in the car, when all of a sudden I see a woman in what can only be described as a psychotic rage, chasing my husband & friend screaming "NO REFUNDS! NO REFUNDS!" My husband got in the car & proceeded to let me know that she wouldn't even let them talk. She just yelled, shooed them away & called the cops on them! (If you knew my husband, this is hilarious :) Even when offering to let her keep $20 for her time, there was no reasoning with a crazy woman.

I tried contacting her after a few minutes later, thinking maybe she calmed down & was hung up on. We have never been more disappointed in a lack of customer service. That is absolutely no way to run a business. So for all you folks looking to go camping in Port Clinton, here is the warning I wish I had!!!
