The Good: The stores in my area (Fairlawn, Medina) have a decent amount of stock and the staff doesn't seem to mind browsers. The staff is generally friendly.

The Not So Good: I'm not a professional; I'm a hobbyist, and therefore I rely on the advice of professionals. The staff at the stores all claim to be working photographers. I accept that it's my responsibility entirely to make the decisions about what I do/don't purchase. What I hope for when I visit a store like this is that the staff will suggest something better for me--whether cheaper or more expensive--once I explain what I'm looking for. I expect a little advice about why what I'm looking for is unnecessary, or useless, or a bad choice. What I get at Dodd is staff that will sell me anything regardless of its quality or whether it meets my needs.

Example: After purchasing a Canon 7D I wanted a good strap. One was recommended to me highly by one of the staff, after telling me that the one I wanted wasn't carried by Dodd. "This is the one I use" he said. The strap screws into the bottom of the camera and is very secure. However, the hardware is such that it destroyed the finish along the bottom edge of the rear of the camera. Did he not know this was a possibility? How is that possible if he actually uses one? Did he lie about owning one? If he didn't lie did he not think it worth mentioning? Why should I trust this person's advice in future? Every time I look at my new camera I vow never again to step foot in a Dodd store.

Ex 2: I was shopping for an external flash for macro. I was comparing features vs cost of Canon vs non-Canon. They didn't have these in stock but lo-and-behold they had the Promaster RL60. Yeah, I was attracted by the lower price, but what I fell for was the claim that this would do everything I wanted--which of course, is just nonsense. Either they know nothing at all about the subject, which seems unlikely, or it was a LIE. Is there any other option? It's clear to me that selling me ANYTHING is far more important than helping me achieve what I want.

Ex3: Dodd advertised a good sale on Canon batteries. At the Fairlawn store I was told "We don't have those in stock, but we have this other brand." The Canon sale price was exactly the same price as this one's regular price...but it wasn't a Canon. I bought it reluctantly, as I needed a battery. As I was leaving I saw the rack from which he had taken the battery--he had reached right past 6 or 7 Canon batts to pick up the knock-off. He flat out LIED to me. I exchanged it at another Dodd store as my temper can be quite bad. I can only assume that despite the similarity in price there was a greater profit to be had in a sale of an undiscounted Promaster vs a discounted Canon product.

So, I bought a non-standard battery I didn't want, a strap that destroyed the finish of my new camera, a macro light that is just embarrassing to own, as well as a complete distrust of anything I'm told at Dodd. I'd prefer to spend money locally, but as Dodd is my only option I'm now buying online.

For all of your photography needs visit Dodd Camera on 30th Carnegie. From novice to professional, the staff will take time to answer your questions and make sure that your photography needs are met. The staff is very knowledgeable. They do not pressure sell and they do not try to sell you items that you don't need. The staff here are also good for support. They seem to never tire in giving information on all aspects of photography. The quality of their prints are excellent. The chairs for the image box are oh so comfortable. You almost feel like you're at home. I can't say enough about how wonderful I think the staff is and how well stocked this store is. You should see the frame and photo book collection. For a fun and educational experience, visit this store. If nothing else, go into this store so that you can meet Terry, Chris, Deb, Eric, Charlie, Scotty, Jerry, McKinnley and the other staff. Also, classes are offered regularly. For all of my photography needs this is the only place that I go.

In response to Ken H. He and I had a pleasant conversation about his experience after he posted his comments below. Ultimately he has returned to the Medina store and made a purchase of the lens he wanted.

At Dodd Camera our core philosophy is that we should treat coworkers and customers with courtesy and respect at all times.
I am eager to hear about the times when we fail to meet that ideal.

On October 28th, 2010 I stopped in at the Medina, Ohio store at approx. 6:30 p.m. to purchase a Canon 70-200mm F4 L lens that had been placed on reserve for me approx. 3 weeks prior. At that time, the saleswoman had assured me that if the lens was sold before then, I would be notified via phone and another unit would be ordered. I furnished a phone number but never received a phone call from the saleswoman. Upon returning on October 28th to purchase the lens, she informed me that it had been sold and there would be no more of these lenses available. Her attitude was lousy and she didn't care about the fact that a long time customer of Dodd was very disappointed. In light of this, I will NEVER return to Dodd Camera for ANY type of photographic finishing or produt purchases!! Mark Leonard, your business prowess leaves much to be desired!! I get FAR better service from the online dealers and will patronize them instead!! You and your company should be ashamed of yourselves for hiring thoughtless, careless employees whose only concern is short term profit!! I guess this is what America has become!! I've been actively involved in photography for 35 years and have never been treated so poorly by a photographic supply store! I will be glad to never return to this joke of a company which seems to be the norm for retail sales in America!

My name is Mark Leonard and I am the president at Dodd Camera. I try to be very accessible to our customers.

Most of the time we provide fantastic service and we receive plenty of praise. Sometimes we fail to meet customer expectations and that is always disappointing. I like to know when that happens so that I can help resolve the situation or at least work to ensure future customers with similar situations do not encounter the same frustration.

Should you ever have a reason to offer a criticism or compliment I can be reached at 216-361-6811 where you will be greeted by a real live human being answering the phone and easy access to me.

We are still family owned and headquartered in downtown Cleveland. Been that way for 119 years.

Let me know if I can be of help to you.

Mark

I've been into photograpy for over 50 years and can honestly say they are the worst 'professional' store I've ever dealt with. I had a roll of ASA 100 linear film developed at the fairview store a few years back, and it came back looking like ASA 3200. It was obviously developed in the wrong chemicals, or at higher temps that called for. Upon questioning the manager, I was informed they didn't do their own developing, but sent it out to a woman somewhere that did it for them.NOT PROFESSIONAL.

Another time I went to their repair shop and wanted to purchase a shutter cock knob for an Argus C3 I've had since a teenager, and they asked over $50.00 for it.When I could stop stuttering and asked why, they said they had to charge me a repair charge, even though I was only buying the part and doing the repair myself! NOT AT ALL PROFESSIONAL!
I've also stopped into their store a few times wanting info on a product and was either told they knew noting about it, or if they didn't carry it but did carry a similar product, given a BS story about why the product carried was superior.
I've also ALWAYS been able to find anything I wanted quite a bit cheaper elsewhere.
As far as I'm concerned, they live off the fact they're the only 'professional' store in the area and take full advantage of it.

I'm a graduating college student and I'll be glad when I never have to shop at Dodd again.

I've been shopping at Dodd on E. 30th Street for four years for various services, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and trying to be optimistic.... I'm always disappointed.

Many employees in the store (more than necessary), however none greet me upon arrival. Upon looking for items (and trying to make it obvious that I need help), I'm still ignored while all the employees just chat with each other.

I was trying to buy a new camera bag, so I brought in my equipment to make sure it fits (something that is recommended by any pro). Finally someone comes and talks with me; after listening to what I'm looking for and that i'm on a budget (college student), he tries to sell me the most expensive, albeit best, bag.

Asking advice is like asking my English professor for help on organic chemistry. Everyone there can dumb-down the jargon and explain it to a non-photographer. However, upon asking details, everyone seems to be lost. On top of that, over half of the people haven't taken a photograph since the dawn of the digital era!

The one nice thing, is that they do have a wide selection, and their rental services are fairly priced. However, their prices are at MSRP; significantly cheaper to buy online. I am willing to pay more to support a local camera shop (I do when I'm at home), but for the service I've been given over the last four years, it will be a pleasure to never deal with Dodd again.

After driving by Dodd for years i finally noticed it and went it. Great Staff, huge selection of everything, low prices. Seamless Paper is a steal there, lowest price I've ever seen. Staff was well informed, and they also carried the harder to find canon printer inks. top notch, have already recommended to other friends

I had a scan done and the pictures came out dark. I asked if they could do them better and they said yes. I said I don't want to be charged and they said no.

Very Disappointed

I was extremely disappointed in the service that I received when I had Fairview Park Dodd Camera develop 10 rolls of wedding film and found the most of them had problems. I was told upon picking up the cd??s that there were 5 rolls of film that were wound backwards (I don??t understand this) but that they were able to figure out there was a problem and corrected it but that 1 roll had some cloudiness. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant when affirming that this is possible. I said ok and asked if the rest of the photos turned out ok and she said yes they were fine.

The problems that I encountered were:

Number of rolls with problemProblem ?? some rolls had duplicate issues
5Red patches and/or redlines through out many photos
3Sprocket marks -holes from a negative edge
4Dark portions of picture, i.e. 1/3 picture very dark
2Pictures taken were not present on CD

When I called the store and asked to speak to the manager he answered the phone without giving his name, I gave my name and explained that I had 10 rolls of film developed to cd. He told me that he thought he remembered my order and wanted to talk with his tech so I said ok, he put me on hold and upon returning to the phone told me that there were problems with some of the film being wound the wrong way. That is what I was told but I would like to explain what issues I had with the photos before being dismissed.
As I began to try and explain to him what the issues were he suggested that I talk with the technician, so that she might explain. It was very apparent that he didn??t want to hear the problems that I had.

I was shocked that he didn??t seem to care about the customer. He asked that I call the next day to ensure that the tech would be available for our meeting and when I called the tech had already left for the day at 3:49pm and the manager wouldn??t be available in the evening for the next few days.

I attempted to express my disappointment with the lack of professionalism and I offered what I thought might have been a good idea for similar circumstances in the future. I suggested that the tech should call the customer if ever presented with so many rolls of film with problems and at the very least inform them so that the customer could either chose to develop them or take the rest of the film to another place to ensure that it??s the film and not the technician.

Thankfully I only had the film developed to CD or it would had a much greater loss of money. Thankfully I had some other pictures on digital camera, from now on it??s digital all the way!!!! Although this was a great loss to me personally as these were my daughters wedding photos. Obviously I will not ever go to Dodd Camera again.

The staff at Dodd Camera are some of the most helpful people I have ever come across. I had recently had a problem with my digital camera and took it to Dodd to see if they could help me. Before I took the camera in, I was afraid that it wouldn?t be able to be fixed. I put my camera in the hands of the Dodd crew, came back a day later and my camera was a good as new. I will definitely be going back.

My friend is a budding photographer and I went with him to purchase a new digital camera. He said he was very impressed with the selection of the cameras as well as the knowledge all the staff members possessed. He also took in an old camera to get repaired and they did a great job. It was his favorite camera to use for nature shots and he is very happy that he is able to use it again.

This place has a very large selection of professional photography stuff. You can find almost everything you will need for photography here. The staffs are very friendly and very knowledgable. They will try their best to answer any of your questions. Their price are a little bit higher compare to the internet, but it is wonderful to have a local store like this so you can just go when you need to get something right away.
