This old fella had an engine listed for sale on the Internet. I asked the woman who answered the phone if it was in fair condition and how much it costs. She told me to call back in about an hour. I called back, she answered, and I reminded her what information I needed. She said, "hold on and I'll ask him". After about 10 seconds she got back on the phone and said "he said no." I said, "does he mean no he doesn't have it or no it's not in fair condition." She said, let me ask him. After about 20 seconds she came back on and said "he said it's $300 but he can't sell it to you because he can't ship it." I said, "that's ok, I'm willing to come there myself and pick it up." She said, let me ask him if we can do that. In about 10 seconds he got on the phone and yelled into it: "it's not for sale, bye!" I was a little shocked, but I said, "do you have another one like it" but before I could get that out he said "it's not for sale, bye!" So, I told him "go to hell" and I slammed the phone down.

Why would he list something that's for sale if he doesn't want to sell it? He can't say that shipping's a problem because I offered to pick it up in person.

The way he dealt with me (or didn't deal with me) is no way to do business. Furthermore, it's false advertising to list something for sell, verify that you have it, and then refuse to sell it for no apparent reason.

If he had cold feet about selling an engine to someone from out-of-state for fear of the liability involved, he could have plainly said so and I would understand. Or, if he just didn't want to fool with it, he could have taken it off the Internet or told anybody that calls "it's no longer in stock."

Unfortunately, he's grouchy and doesn't know how to treat people. That's reason enough to take your business elsewhere.
