I saw a number of opinions of this place and felt compelled to try it out on my lunch break. It truly reminds me of Public School Cafeteria food. The Roast beef was cooked till it fell apart then placed on a piece of bread then gravy then another piece of bread and more gravy throw a scoop of mashed potatos and more gravy, and I opted for a side of green beans. The Gravy was thin and runny and was missing flavor, and the mashed potatos were creamy but were served so hot I burned my mouth. The only redeaming part of my meal was the fact that the oreo cream pie was very good, so long as I didn't drink the swill they call coffee with it.

I GREW UP IN TOLEDO AND RED WELLS WAS A SATURDAY TRADITION FOR MY DAD, ME AND SOMETIMES MY MOM AND SISTER. WHEN RED WAS ALIVE, HE WOULD CALL MY DAD BY HIS NAME AND CALL ME "LITTLE ...". THE FOOD IS AWESOME AND THERE SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF RED STILL THERE EVEN AFTER THEM BEING IN BUSINESS FOR 88 YEARS IN TOLEDO. I LIVE IN INDIANA NOW BUT WHENEVER I AM IN TOLEDO, I MAKE SURE TO EAT THERE AT LEAST ONCE. DAD IS GONE NOW BUT I WILL ALWAYS LOVE RED WELLS

If you get to Toledo, Ohio then you must check out Red Wells roast beef. It is still the best roast beef in america. But when red was still
alive he did all the cooking himself until his death. Mr. wells was always about how to please the customer and he would not stand for nothing else. At no time did I ever recieve a bad meal there. it is now a little more pricey then when red wells was alive but you can still get a good meal there.

I grew up in southeast Michigan and around the Toledo area and Red Wells was a place you could always go to and experience the very best roast beef on the planet. As a kid, it was a hugh treat to go to this family owned and operated restaurant. Every single time I went, I licked my plate clean!

The cafeteria style serving line has everything you would want to have a terrific meal. You can choose items" ala carte" or you can order the dinner plate. The roast beef is piled high on your choice of bread. The beef is so tender, all that is needed is a butter knife and fork. Everything on the plate, including the perfect mashed potatoes, is covered by a delectable beef gravy. By the way, if you don't like beef, they also offer other choices like a turkey dinner that is just as good. The dinner plate is definately filling, but if you are a real conossouier of roast beef, like my husband and son are, you will order a "double order" .

A dinner order will run you $4.50 - $7.00 depending on what items you order "ala carte". At today's restaurant prices, this is a deal you don't want to miss.

This restaurant has been in business for as long as I can remember. I used to go with my grandpa when I was little (35 years ago) and he would always tell me stories of the place. It is defiantely a Toledo icon that needs to visited when you travel through.

I have started the "Red Wells Tradition" with my family. We drive over an hour, at least once a month, for this meal. My kids love it, my husband would die for it, and it means I know my family will be getting a great meal. And by the way....they lick their plates clean, too!

PROS: Outstanding food and great price. Staff remembers frequent customers.
CONS: Small and appears a little out dated, but that is part of the ambience.

This locally owned roast beef restaurant has been in business ever since I can remember...over 50 years)
They have the "very best" roast beef sandwiches.Whenever my out of town friends and relatives come in town that is the first place they want to go!
The sandwiches are a little pricey $3.75 each but they pile it high with roast beef on your selection of bread and optional horseradish sauce. They also carry mashed potatoes, vegetables and a very good assortment of desserts.
This restaurant has been passed down through generations of the same family. If you get to the Toledo, Ohio area be sure to make a trip to this restaurant

PROS: Great Sandwiches
CONS: none

I am watching the Food Network tonight on TV and this name popped up in my mind. We used to live in Toledo at 14th and Jefferson back in the 40s. We often went to Red Wells Famous Roast Beef when they were located more closely than the Sylvania address. I don't recall the street it was on. However, it was the highlight of our week when we ordered roast beef on rye, the hoseradish lifted the sinuses to new levels, and the delicious gravy and mashed potatoes made just right. I wish I was able to travel to Toledo again just to go here once more. It was affordable at that time as we were aspiring artists starting out to impress the world!!!

If you're looking for a fantastic hot roast beef (or carved turkey) sandwich, this is THE place to go. One-family-owned for decades. It's eat-in cafeteria-style or you can get it to go. Piled high & thinly sliced with plenty of gravy. Horseradish sauce on request. Sandwiches available on your choice of several kinds of bread & can be ordered as whole, half, or doubled. Both the turkey & roast beef juicy & so tender a knife in not necessary. The roast beef hash is wonderful & other available sides are creamy mashed potatoes, corn, cottage cheese, green beans, cole slaw, stewed tomatoes, deviled eggs. Desserts include a variety of pies as well as jello, custard or pudding. You won't be disappointed!
